Nope, the Vodafone one is the same 32Gig internal memory the difference is that the Vodafone one comes with a red leather back (unique to Vodafone) and it's locked to their network although you can get an unlock code for about £2.50 on eBay. I assume the eBuyer one isn't locked to any network and so won't have any of the Vodafone apps pre installed, which is a good thing.

Where is all this vodafone stock (that there isnt any of)
MARCUSW
24 Mar 16 1 #15
They still have stock but it's all allocated to Pay Monthly contracts i.e. all the PayAsYouGo stock has been sold. You can however go into a shop and ask them to transfer one over to PayAsYouGo. They can do this but it's up to the store salesman if they can be bothered to do it or not.

Just to be clear I'm not saying the Vodafone deal is better and I have voted HOT on this deal as well. It all depends on how much effort you want to put into saving £30... and how much you like/dislike a brown/red leather backed phone.

The phone itself does support fast charge BUT the charger in the box isn't a fast charger so you'll need to buy a better charger to do it. In a similar way the phone does support wireless charging but you need to add the charging coil buy either buying the official circle case or by buying the wireless charging sticker (coil) to put in the back of the existing case.

24 Mar 16 1 #23
You don't have to buy a top up. You may need to spend a couple of quid on ebay for an unlock. If you can wait Vodafone might get some more in stock, otherwise you could look for stock of the contract version in store and may be able to get them to convert it (in store avoiding the top up may harder). Otherwise pay another £40 for this one in brown, still good value.
maano001
24 Mar 16 #24
Yes, they will convert contract phones to PAYG, which is how I got mine. However in the first store I went to they said if its their last contract phone they are not allowed to convert. Dont know if its policy or not, but that is what I was told. Went to another store and had one converted. I suspect many stores will be down to their last or last few LG4s now.

Brought one of the brown leather versions from Ebuyer in December and had to return it as it was getting stinking hot they sent a new replacement and that was exactly the same so returned that and got a refund before returning the second one I was advised to contact LG by Ebuyer to see if they could advise me on sorting the heat issue so i spoke to LG on the phone and went through a load of trouble shooting steps which involved installing some apps to check the battery and temperatures, after completing the tests LG confirmed that it was faulty and when i explained that this was the second one from Ebuyer LG advised that it seemed like they had a bad batch. In the end i bought a SGS6 edge and havent had any issues since. The reason ive posted this is so potential buyers are aware that i had 2 faulty units that got red hot just installing apps so if you receive one and its getting hot send it back Ebuyer are aware of some getting hot and i bet thats why they were selling them off cheap.

I bought one that had the boot loop issue. It was manufactured in June 2015 and I bought the phone in July. I always thought it was a bit slow at accessing certain apps when compared to my previous Samsung S4. Now I know why. Mine had a faulty motherboard.

According to the forums the issue only affect phones manufactured up to September 2015 although there have been a couple of people who reckon theirs was manufactured after this. The problem is the motherboard. If anyone has a G4 and it develops the boot loop fault and you want your phone back then check first with your carrier or whoever you bought the phone off and ask them what their policy is for repair. I am with Virgin. They didn't even look at my phone when I sent it back to them and wanted to give me a Samsung S6 as they had no stock of G4. Note that they do not send you a brand new phone. They send you an as new phone. I got in touch with LG and they said to send it to them. I got my phone back from Virgin and LG arranged collection. Just under two weeks later I have my G4 back fitted with a new motherboard. This was a common failure on the G4 and admitted by LG in January.

Not that if I had bought my phone from a well known auction site from a private individual I would now be looking at an expensive paperweight. Manufacturer's warranty is for first user only where mobile phones are concerned unless you buy from a company. Be careful about parting with your hard earned cash when buying from Joe Public. If you buy from a business then you are still covered.

Until such point that they ask you for a receipt or proof of purchase. If you buy from a private individual there is no warranty. Buying from a business is covered by our Consumer Act, previously the Sale of Goods Act and also under EU regulations.

In general terms a second-hand purchase is protected in the same way as that of a new product, provided you buy from a retailer. If you buy from a private individual however, the regulations are different - the transaction is classed as a private sale, and the goods you buy must only be correctly described, and be the legal property of the seller. The manufacturer has no contract with you (or with the first owner), so there's no liability in law. In reality in my case LG could have told me to contact Virgin as they were the first owner of my G4, being the retailer. LG has no contract with me whatsoever as their contract is with Virgin as mine is with Virgin.

Obviously every warranty claim is based on its own merit. LG were outstanding in putting the issue right but they could have turned round and said that as my contract was with Virgin I would need to contact them. I told them upfront that I had contacted Virgin who were unable to offer me a repair or replacement G4 and could only exchange my G4 for a Samsung S6. That could be a deciding factor.

Before lodging my claim with LG I had already registered my phone with LG and uploaded my Virgin documentation. Not a receipt as such as you buy the phone from them under an HP agreement. On the paperwork I received from LG it did request that I send a receipt.

Thanks for that. Mine was a 506. It is now a 602 according to the serial number. I would be interested to know what the serials where of the cheap ones going for sale at Vodafone. I had noticed that my phone seemed a bit sluggish and I had the camera stopped issue as well as seeing the 'unfortunately home as stopped' on many occasions.

I see that email was dated 29th September 2014 and posted on XDA on 1st October 2014. So I just wonder if LG sent this to all retailers in the UK. One of the guys at work was so impressed with my phone he bought two about two months ago from CPW on 02. I told him my story today and we checked the serial on his phone. It's a 507. So what he wants to know is will his phone break or has it been repaired already. I told him he best register the phone with LG, upload his receipt, contract or delivery note and then ask LG the question through their webchat.

This gives more info on the problem and what to do "if" the issue affects you. I bookmarked it just in case the two 509's I purchased developed the boot loop.

If your workmate bought the phone as new, that's what it should be, or the retailer would be obliged to describe otherwise.

I don't know for sure if the issue affects all handsets purchased prior to September, but at least LG have now acknowledged the issue and offered a repair solution "if" it does.

[/quote]This gives more info on the problem and what to do "if" the issue affects you. I bookmarked it just in case the two 509's I purchased developed the boot loop.

I referred LG to that post when I first contacted them. LG were really good. They arranged collection of my phone within a couple of days and it took about 8 working days or so to get it back to me. The phone is definitely better. It used to show the waiting symbol when accessing the gallery and internet sometimes. It would also say 'sorry home has stopped' at least a couple of times a week. I am only a light user but mine went just after upgrading to marshmallow. I noticed immediately after upgrading it was sluggish to exit apps and found myself pressing the back button more than once. I think the install was the key to it breaking. A couple of days later I ran a speedtest app to test my daughter's internet speed and it crashed and went into boot loop. Will see how we get on with the new motherboard but it seems very nippy compared to the original one. I have 24 month warranty with Virgin anyway so if it breaks after July I will at least get a replacement of some description.

I bought my G4 from someone on Gumtree in November & never got a receipt or anything. Mine was a 506 model & the bootloader was unlocked when I bought it (which means it wouldn't be covered by their warranty - but I didn't notice this until later).

It got the bootloop issue earlier this month. Sad face, obviously. Contacted LG & they said it wouldn't be covered by warranty without a receipt & I'd need to contact their out-of-warranty repair centre (SBE) & pay for the repair. At that point I thought I was totally screwed but contacted the repair company - they said it would probably cost around £40 to fix dependent on what the issue was & I'd need to send it in for them to inspect it.

I had nothing to lose really as £40 seemed fair enough as the phone was basically worthless as it was. So I sent it off & SBE fixed it (they replaced the board). They have an online repair tracking system to follow what's happening which is quite useful. I had it back 6 days later (including the weekend) & wasn't charged anything - the only cost was having to post the broken phone to them recorded delivery. Anyway, the phone now works better than it did before it crashed (it had an issue where the network randomly lost connection when making calls).

Not sure how much of this is just luck but it's definitely a good result. I'd suggest if anyone has bought a 2nd hand G4 & has the bootloop issue that they contact LG first & then the repair company (SBE) as there's a chance they'll fix it & you might not have to pay anything.

However, there's obviously no guarantee as I have also read (on xda) that someone contacted SBE regarding getting their Virgin network G4 fixed after it developed the bootloop issue (phone was out of warranty due to owner having unlocked the bootloader) - they were told that SBE wouldn't repair it as the cost of repair would be greater than buying a new phone (make of that what you will)!

That's a nice story with a happy ending. I was after a spare case my G4 and noticed that two people had G4's for sale with the boot loop issue. They weren't aware that there had been an issue and as they had both bought their phones from ebay they assumed there was no warranty. I think in this case it is questionable irrespective of first, second or third owner. There is evidence that LG have admitted there has been a problem since first manufacture. It should be put right no matter how many times the phone has been sold providing it is less than 12 months old which it is as it wasn't launched here until May. It doesn't matter about what laws exist. LG should not have supplied a faulty product end of. I helped both of the sellers with details how to contact LG. One of them had bought from a business seller so could get an official receipt and was going to pursue his claim. The other seller said LG refused to repair his phone. I guess it all comes down to who you get on the end of the phone. I had a similar story to yours with a Sony phone handed down to me by my daughter. Sony refused to repair it under warranty as I couldn't prove ownership. The phone had only been out for about 18 months with 2 years manufacturers warranty. I left it a couple of weeks and dropped them a nice email and asked if I could send it in for an estimate for repair. They emailed me a postage slip and repaired the phone for free.

I guess some people are lucky and some not so. The only thing I have learnt from this is I will never buy a phone which is still within manufacturers warranty second hand. Flagship phones are not cheap these days and from what I have read there are still a lot of G4 owners out there who possibly have a phone that is just waiting to die. LG will know just how many 506, 507 and 508's they have sold and who to. They should be recalling them all as a matter of courtesy.
Thar
30 Mar 16 #67
Very true. Look at Hotpoint!

Speaking of buying second hand, I sold a HTC M8 6 months after getting it on contract. There was nothing wrong with it, i only used it for a matter of days but just couldn't take to it. The HTC warranty was fully transferable, I found it on their support site, so that was added piece of mind for my buyer.
Smartguy1
30 Mar 16 #68
If only we had people who had some thought process when the laws are made. There shouldn't be any loopholes or misrepresentation. It should be clear and a manufacturers 12 months warranty should be just that no matter who owns the phone. In fact our own and EU laws state that the warranty is longer but as usual they don't make it clear so manufacturers and retailers can try and con you into thinking you only have 12 months. You don't you have longer. Samsung play the EU law game as do JL and state 24 months warranty on their products which is what EU law states. My son got his two and a half year old Samsung repaired for free just by following our own Sale of Goods Act law. Advantage of having a law degree but it worked. Currys turned round and said it wasn't covered but as soon as he quoted the sale of goods act and limitations act they buckled and picked his tv up and repaired it.

Just to let you know. After many hours in the beer garden yesterday (and a few hours in a warm room today) my phone just crashed and now has the boot loop issue. I'm glad I didn't ever get around to unlocking the boot loader and that it has happened now before I did.

As I said, serial number starts 509, purchased either from Flubit or eBuyer back in November 2015.

9 May 16 #70
Sorry to hear that. Are you going to go directly to LG? Will you let us know how you get on?
omgpleasespamme
10 May 16 #71
Yea, I went straight to the LG website and filled in the form however they don't even send out an e-mail confirmation. After leaving the phone bootlooping for a while it does turn on and stay on for a few minutes, I guess it gets so warm the dodgy connection is remade for a short period of time. After some searching around I was able to find a small file to flash to it that disables the BIG cores leaving just the 4 little in operation and that seems to have made it stable enough that I might use it tomorrow (went back to my G3 today). I hope I hear from LG tomorrow, I believe they should visit and repair/replace. As long as the new motherboard doesn't have the same issue or they add another few months to the warranty I'm not too bothered what they do.

At the moment I need to figure out what the closest to a nandroid back up for a phone with a locked bootloader is and do that. I think there's a way to download all the partitions in the same but I'll need to do some reading.
Thar
10 May 16 #72
Well I hope you hear from LG soon and good luck with the backup. Helium is mentioned a lot when requiring backup without root but even that doesn't backup everything.

On the positive side, the British Summer seems to have ended so there's less chance for my two to develop the issue! :stuck_out_tongue:
omgpleasespamme
18 May 16 #73
Picked up on the 12, dropped off just now (18th). The piece of paper accompanying it says 'MAIN BOARD HAS BEEN REPLACED'. In terms of the rest of the phone it appears to be the once I sent away, screen protector chipped around the edges and a chip in the shiny silver surround top right. This motherboard has more up to date software than the previous so time to try and downgrade and also call LG to find out how long the repair is guaranteed for.
Thar
18 May 16 #74
Thanks for the update. That's not bad service! I've instructed my family members with the phones to try and keep them cool. I did suggest they do the opposite and force the bootloop to happen but that didn't go down well!

Did you find a way to backup by the way?
Smartguy1
18 May 16 #75
Anyone who has a G4 I suggest you download LG Bridge now and use it to back up all of your contents, messages etc. I lost all mine when mine bootlooped and wouldn't turn on. You should by default really save your pictures, videos etc to memory card.

Mine boot looped following an internet speedtest. Mine was also repaired by LG with a new main board and they gave me excellent service.

Thar, your warranty runs from the day you bought your phone. Depending on which laws you wish to make a claim under further warranty claims may be made up to 6 years from date of purchase. Some of these are difficult to prove but under EU law all electronic goods have a warranty of 24 months. LG have openly admitted there was a problem on phones manufactured up to September 2015. Anyone who has up to a 509 series phone will easily be able to make a claim for the motherboard under EU law. It's complicated but everyone is entitled to claim up to 24 months under EU law and up to 6 years under our UK laws.
Thar
18 May 16 #76
Thanks for the info. I'm not too worried about photos and videos, they are set up to save them to Google anyway. They are both 509's and were purchased mid November last year.
omgpleasespamme
18 May 16 #77
Not really, the phone wasn't stable enough to dump whole partitions so I just used Titanium backup on a few select apps and I'm going through the rebuild now. I downgraded the OS however for some reason the phone will no longer read SD cards or USB sticks that it used to read just fine. I'm having to copy things off, format the disks and copy things back on. It's time consuming. I also had to go through the Xposed framework installation and although everything seems fine some of the modules aren't working and I've no idea why.

In the end I didn't call LG, I just took the IMEI from the new main board and registered a new phone purchased today. Hopefully I'll not have a need to use the warranty again and in a few weeks, after some more sessions in the sun hopefully, I'll upgrade to Marshmallow, unlock the boot loader and regain root.
