I've always thought butter is butter so I get whatever's cheapest. Can anyone suggest a pair of butters which have a quite different flavour for me to try? I'm talking about standard butter here, not garlic or any other intentionally flavoured butters.

Your just paying extra for a branded butter, I bet they are all made in the same factory anyway. Been buying the Lidl 75p butter and can't tell the difference between this and branded butter.

Totally true - and as just one example Aldi Greenvale salted butter has the FP046 code showing that it's from the Gower View Foods creamery in Wales. You'll find the same code appears on Country Life butter, indicating that it's also from there. And since all salted butter is made of exactly the same ingredients, milk and salt, with the salt content varying slightly between brands, and the % being the same in Aldi and Country Life, Aldi butter (75p) = Country Life butter (£1 -£1.64).

Why waste money buying exactly the same thing at a higher price with just a different label to show for it?

Kerrygold is from cows in Ireland that are grass fed. I would be willing to bet that the butter you quote is from cows that are supplemented with food other than grass. Even organic milk/butter is only a minimum of 60% grass fed. Just Google the benefits of grass fed animal meat/milk.

I take your point though, and if you find some own brand stuff that is made by kerrygold (or milk from the same cows) and labelled differently, please let me know and I will happily buy it.

Well, kerrygolds website says that their cows diet is 85% grass based, including silage. So grain etc is involved somewhere.
P's. They are very wary of saying what the supplementary feed consists of.
