Found this iPhone 6s on John Lewis. This is the cheapest I can find it with a FREE two year warranty. You can also find this on Giffgaff for the same price but it will only come with the standard one year warranty.
Blurb from the John Lewis website:

In my opinion, I would say that this is a good deal, especially for an iPhone...
John Lewis will never lock you to any network.

Not to start a fanboy war, but i've got friends with the latest samsung and honestly, 2gb or 3gb ram androids don't beat the iPhone. Specs look great on paper, but Apple manage to get full performance out of the hardware they use, so a 3gb android wouldn't necessarily be better than the iPhone. The only thing I like about some of the newer androids is the very fast touch-unlock functionality, but once you're in the phone, that's it. And in terms of security, the iPhone wins hands down. That being said, this is a rather expensive device, but look at the Samsung S7 and Blackberry Priv, they're not exactly cheap either.

iPhones bought from Carphone Warehouse do lock to the first SIM used to activate the handset however John Lewis iPhones are just like those bought from Apple and are completely unlocked and will not lock to first SIM used.
DemonIT
26 Mar 161#19
That's not correct.
The only phones that are truly factory unlocked are Apple's.
If, for example, you put a Three SIM in first, it will register the first network on Apple's registration servers as Three, but as Three have a no-lock policy the phone's record at Apple will be immediately updated to unlocked.
Try putting an O2 SIM in first instead and see what happens!

Seriously? The Galaxy S7 has a protruding camera as does the Nexus 6P and while the LG G5 doesn't, it does have a slightly protruding finger print sensor! All flagship phones of the respective manufacturers, so not exactly an awful design feature. As for the antenna band? Most people when spending this sort of money on a phone, wrap it in a cover, so who cares? The cover also acting to take up the difference between the phone back and the protruding camera, eliminating both your issues, but i suppose haters gotta hate!

misterleoni
27 Mar 16#44
Only in terms of the screen, effectively. Samsung still blow everyone else out of the water in that regard. As for Android's multi-core uber-RAM thing - you can't compare, as Android runs on JAVA so needs to throw more and more RAM at its devices as time goes on. Not sure why devices need 8 cores but it doesn't make for more power - remember the top end i7 Surface Pro 4 only uses two cores - and no one would say a Samsung S7 is more powerful than that.
Actually some people probably would

You are wrong, iPhones bought from John Lewis 100% definitely don't lock and it is not true to say that only phones bought direct from Apple won't lock to the first network they are used on. Phones bought directly from a network will be locked to that network, and it used to be the case the phones from CarPhoneWarehouse locked to the first network because they were phones intended to be sold on contract not sim free, but true sim free stock such as these will not lock and are the same as ones bought direct from Apple.

So much misinformation is this thread. Despite clear (although anecdotal) evidence from people who have bought from JL that these DO NOT lock to the network of the first SIM installed, some nerds are adamant that they do.
Regardless this is a deal because it's cheaper and you get the extra warranty. I'm pretty sure even if the phone did lock to a network JL would offer to help out somehow.

SIM-free iPhones don't lock to a network, only the ones sold via carriers lock. If you find it does I'd return it to JL stating false advertising.
Bepto
27 Mar 16#55
You would look a bit daft holding it up to your ear though.
"Only after I had ordered and paid for it did I find another sentence with this warning at the very bottom of the iPhones attributes!! Locked on first Sim used!! "
So if you really want one check 1st and return if what happened to 'okap' happens to you, simple.
If enough people return their 'locked' iphones JLP may eventually cotton on its a con to sell 'locked' as 'unlocked' (assuming they are of course). Which I think they are.
DemonIT
27 Mar 163#58
Just to be clear, JL have ZERO way to dictate the lock policy - it isn't up to them.
Here's how it works:
Apple maintain a database of IMEI's and each entry has a field for lock status.
Apple's range of IMEI's have a lock status of "unlocked"
EVERY OTHER IPHONE leaves Apple with a status of "lock on first SIM"
When a SIM is inserted, it contacts Apple to report the SIMs carrier ID and request activation. If the status is 'unlocked', the request is approved and nothing else happens. If the current status is 'lockonfirstSIM' then the database record is updated to the current SIM's carrier ID and future activation requests will only be approved if the future SIM's Network ID matches.
HOWEVER, a carrier (with approved access to Apple's Activation Server API's) can send a request to update a phones status to "unlatched" IF if their network ID matches the network ID that the handset is currently locked to, or is the network ID that purchased that batch of iPhones.
GiffGaff, for example, will send such un-latching requests to Apple automatically as soon as they receive the list of IMEI's for the batch of iPhones they've ordered. This is how they are selling what, to the consumer, appears to be a 'factory' unlocked iPhone (and is as good as one,
btw).
Now, JL are NOT a carrier and so will not have access to the API. They do, however, partner with Vodafone so perhaps have an agreement for them to do this.
The point is that the only phones to leave apple's warehouses unlocked are Apple's.
Get it in writing from any other supplier that the phone is unlatched (as GiffGaff make a point of advertising) before purchase.
Where there is ambiguity (like with JL, who don't state either way - other than 'SIM Free', which doesn't mean a thing!), you should proceed with caution and don't take anybody's opinion (either way) on here as a guarantee.

Why spend £600 on a phone when you can get a Chinese equivalent for half the price? You want to pay the difference ie £300 just for iOS?!
misterleoni to idturner
27 Mar 161#85
If you use and like iOS then yes. Unless you know a £100 Chinese phone with iMessage, FaceTime and all your game saves, app setup and messages backed up to the cloud. Trying to sell Whatsapp, Skype or Facebook messenger as alternatives simply won't cut it for those who are already in the ecosystem - particularly if they're used to just taking advantage of an upgrade cycle with a given network.

Sorry but what you have said is wrong did you read the article you linked to? all apple did on their warranty page is remind people of their rights under EU law. If bought directly from apple they normally honour the the EU law if you state it when wanting a repair, however if you buy an apple device from any other retailer your rights under EU law and the Consumer rights Act 2015 (which gives 6 years) will be with the retailer you purchased from and after the first 6 months the retailer can ask you to prove that the device was broken at the time of purchase and if you can't they will refuse repair, so not as hassle free as the john lewis warranty.

All those moaning about price, spec and it being an Apple.
Find it cheaper elsewhere, it's HOT uk deals, e.g. an item which is cheaper than elsewhere. In this case with 2 years warranty.
Voted hot as its a good price and can't find it cheaper elsewhere.

Decent deal but I think I did slightly better with the upgrade offer I got from EE. Paying 29.99 per month for this phone and Unlt Mins, Unlt Texts and 4Gb of data. Assuming I'd purchased this that makes the contract 599/24 = 24.96. 29.99 - 24.96 = £5.03 pm and the phone interest free for 24 months.
Bikerdanny
27 Mar 16#113
I mention this in nearly every unlocked iPhone deal and everyone has different needs etc, but i myself got a iPhone 6s 64gb on contract with total cost being £699 over 2 years ( £26pm and £75 for phone ) So in order for this unlocked phone to work out cheaper you would have to get a sim only plan for less than £4.16pm. I currently get 2gb of 4g, unlimited texts and unlimited calls for example. Yes contract phones are locked to a network, but this usually only affects the resale price by £20-30 or get it unlocked after the contract has finished.
Just something to think about if you looking at buying this outright.

don't talk utter rubbish, the most recent lollipop is just as quick as apples GUI. I have an air 2 and a Note 4, they are the same speed......the difference is i can do what the hell i want on an android, instead of being locked down by Apple. The days that android has better hardware but worse performance V apple are long gone. The reality is apple fanbiys blindly pay over the odds for inferior hardware......oh and the camera on Note 4 is better than my friends 6S plus, its better in low light

Apple has very limited and selected hardware lines of products which they do exceedingly well and they don't need to use the latest and greatest hardware. They are not innovators of hardware, they are innovator in packaging quaslity to a quality holistic design. It is the Chairman Mao's suit philosophical equivalent in computing, means cut production cost and distribution cost to minimal with the fewest range of lines possible: why you don't see touchscreen Macbooks, IPAD Air 3, iPAD with full phone features so folks can use it like a speakphone and conference telephone. So real fan boys don't talk about the hardware Android versus iOS, as for Chairman Mao, no fanboy of Mao talked about his plain suit, they talked how they lived under Mao, like how they live under Apple now, it is a lifestyle rather than boring comparson over hardware, Samsung versus Apple, iOS versus Android.

Why do so many people on the internet care so passionately about what mobile phone other people buy?
Why does someone else choosing to buy a different phone to you bother you so much that you have to post your displeasure on internet forums? Does it really affect you that much? Are you so insecure in your own product choice that you need other people to buy the same as you, just to validate it?
If someone has £600 to spend on a high-end phone, whether they choose to buy a Samsung, an Apple, a Sony or any other brand shouldn't bother you in the slightest. You're not the one who has to use it. You're not the one who is now £600 less well off.
Would you go up to people in the supermarket and say: "What an idiot you are for buying that brand of washing powder - you should buy this one - it's half the price and washes your clothes so much better!" - I assume not...
Just let people buy whatever they want with their own money. If someone asks you for your advice in choosing a phone, give them your opinion, but don't try to persuade random strangers on internet forums. People are different, they have different needs, preferences and differing opinions on value. If everyone thought the same as you - the world would be a very boring place.

What a fantastic collection of ill informed nonsense from a few posters.
Firstly, proof if proof was needed that knowing little or nothing about something doesn't matter to some posters as they read something on the internet and are content to be emphatic on the subject. The two posters that argued that all iPhones supplied by anyone other than Apple would lock to the network of the first SIM are perfect examples of where being utterly ignorant is not a factor in blathering nonsense.
The second recurring theme present in this thread is that any appreciation of whether a deal is good or not is less important than whether the poster likes the product. So by that reckoning, I would vote cold on a Range Rover for £1,000 as I don't like them. Ludicrous.

I was an android fanboy and thought - it just isn't possible to have such a great phone. I bought (at release late 2015) an iphone 6s plus - i was long due an upgrade having had the Samsung Note 2 since 2012. It is the best choice i have ever made. It cost me £699 for the phone. and another £119 when i smashed the screen (took 3 hours to replace just walking into the store in Covent Garden).
Ladies and gentlemen, i wont bore you, for i was once like you (the Apple haters) honestly it is just a life changing experience. I am now waiting to switch pcmasterrace eyefinity set up for a macbook pro or an imac.
Give it a try - but avoid the 6s get the plus - battery is better.
Hopefully they have found out by now
The only phones that are truly factory unlocked are Apple's.
If, for example, you put a Three SIM in first, it will register the first network on Apple's registration servers as Three, but as Three have a no-lock policy the phone's record at Apple will be immediately updated to unlocked.
Try putting an O2 SIM in first instead and see what happens!
There is a way to unlock any iphone for free (even the 6S) but it's not common knowledge
You'll also get better resale value and a wider resale audience.
Not such a big deal now that Three have a no lock policy - as long as you can borrow a friends SIM for 5 mins when you first unbox
So no, they don't lock.
Actually some people probably would
"Moar cores is powaaa"
The Samsung S7 is just ridiculously better than the IPhone 6s - sorry but it's the truth :stuck_out_tongue:
Regardless this is a deal because it's cheaper and you get the extra warranty. I'm pretty sure even if the phone did lock to a network JL would offer to help out somehow.
Anyways, why buy an iPhone? Just get one for free from work like I do.
Talk about anecdotal.
FYI, You also get a mandatory 2 year warranty from Apple, so no warranty benefit of buying from JL.
http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2012-04/03/apple-eu-warranty
Its implying its unlocked, shame on JLP only truely unlocked are from apple.
Please dont reply with that 'yes but you can unlock' rubbish, been through all that, should NOT need too.
VERY VERY COLD. (iPhone user for 8 1/2 years)
https://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Help-Support/iPhone-6s-from-John-Lewis/td-p/17365042
see 'okap' post:
"Only after I had ordered and paid for it did I find another sentence with this warning at the very bottom of the iPhones attributes!! Locked on first Sim used!! "
So if you really want one check 1st and return if what happened to 'okap' happens to you, simple.
If enough people return their 'locked' iphones JLP may eventually cotton on its a con to sell 'locked' as 'unlocked' (assuming they are of course). Which I think they are.
Everything about the iPhone is buttery smooth. I'll never buy another Samsung.
Basically JLP need to make it clearer.
Also is your other sim piggybacking off the main network, & that network is the same as your 1st sim?
thanks
1. Factory Sim Free which the likes of Apple, JL and any other non-contract selling supplier sells
2. Lock to first sim - supplied by CPWH etc so they don't have to keep stock for each network
3. Network locked - Locked to EE etc and supplied by the network
Can I ask when was your fathers iPhone launched? and where did you buy from? what model is it?
Cheers

"The roles in the networks break down as:

If iDiots want to spend £599 on buying into an image that is up to them . You have to hand it to Apple how they have managed to keep selling their products for inflated prices while restricting what you can do or accessories you can use is truly remarkable.
Thanks for your reply great choice. I'm also made up for you that it is unlocked but I'm really confused as its the newest model not bought from apple - JLP (their partner is Vodafone), and it's totally unlocked.
Maybe apple have changed their proceedure from post #58 and now, thankfully these iPhone are fully unlocked.
Based on your post I'm sold this deal is officially

I don't think post #68 has anything to do with it, but that's my opinion
For me, John Lewis are advertising and selling the handset as SIM FREE, which means just that. Not tied to any contract and not locked to any network permanently.
So not sure how anyone could say that a laptop is better value for money, unless they genuinely use it more than their phone.
Find it cheaper elsewhere, it's HOT uk deals, e.g. an item which is cheaper than elsewhere. In this case with 2 years warranty.
Voted hot as its a good price and can't find it cheaper elsewhere.
reason-
now sure it is unlocked
works out at £20.83 plus VAT over 24 months
with a EE pay monthly unlimited sim
total:
£30.83 plus VAT - less than EE business sales have quoted.
2 year guarantee
28 day returns
Thanks OP, matt & his dad.
Just something to think about if you looking at buying this outright.
Good price nevertheless!
1) Vegan
2) gluten intolerant
3) a feminist
4) all of the above and just like being controversial to give yourself what you perceive to be interesting attributes.
Just my thoughts, of course
For example:
Cheaper phones are of course available.
It's not the HUKD way...
Carphone Warehouse's do as they don't sell sim free iphones - but have an arrangement to let their stock work on any network which means the phone locks based on first sim card.
However, current price of the iPhone 6s 64GB in Dixons Travel in airports is £569 so a fair bit less dosh if that is what you are after.
These are sim free, unlocked and do not lock to the first network sim you insert.
SIM Free does not equal unlatched.
Ludicrous.
Apple and Chicken deals.
The two foods that bring out the predictable in HKUD.
