That's what kills it permanent Safari reloads, the air 2 with 2gb ram takes care of it and is a much better buy

True. But it's still better than iPad 3 or 4 with the same amount of ram.

But as you say, air 2 is a better choice.

Air 2 have already been reduced and the Air reduced for about 2 weeks can't see them going any lower than this. Also normally when a new model comes out Apple flood their refurb store with them, not this time round. Could be they did a deal to offload what they had left.

Apple remanufacture their devices. Visually that means a new case so it looks good as new. Internally a new battery. They test the unit as they would a new one and replace any other parts required then put fresh software on. They really are good as new and get a full warranty.

A refurb from anywhere else could literally mean anything. I'm as yet to see anyone who replaced the case, I don't know about the battery but I would doubt it. In most cases I expect it is tested, reset, cleaned and that's it.

I don't believe Apple sell their remanufactured units via 3rd parties.

I had a refurb from Currys once. It looked new but kept rebooting. Then I got lucky and Apple replaced it with one of their proper remanufactured units.

I would always assume a refurb means it has been checked, reset and that's your lot.

A proper Apple job is apparently given a new serial number that will begin with something other than the standard M. Check in settings

I bought a laptop from argos for xmas. Condition was as new. It did have a fault a couple months in and I emailed them, they offered me a full refund or a repair. I opted for a repair as it was such a bargain. It was a smooth transaction as they sent a returns label and sent me constant updates on progress and when the laptop was dispatched back to me...happy days

Great price but 16gb will be annoying for many. I'm surprised with the screen resolution it has, that it can even run on 1GB ram. I can imagine it's not the best experience if you're dealing with multiple apps at a time. Somehow it works though and pretty well at that. Excellent deal!

Argos Manager Special

Argos Managers Special is our top grade of refurbishment. These items might have minor cosmetic marks or scratches, but will be of a high standard and are great value for money.

They will have been comprehensively tested and in full working order
The item will have been professionally refurbished
They may have minor cosmetic marks or scratches (these do not hinder the functionality in anyway)
Factory settings will be restored (if applicable)
They will be in original retail or replacement packaging that may have marks, scuffs or stickers on the boxes
They might have non-original accessories

Argos Managers Special products could have been subject to a previous sale, be ex-display and/or non-pristine. They will also be supported by a 12 month warranty. You should expect to see some signs of use, but overall the items are in great condition.

- I've seen many Argos 'refurbed' products (live local to their clearance store), some are ok with bashed boxes and others are knackered from the start. It's not unusual for the spotless ones to fail within a few months, although you'll get your money back, it's just annoying.

Don't expect Apple refurb quality. Professionally just means someone was paid to give it a once over.

If I was buying one (which I'm not), I would order a couple to avoid disappointment.

we have 2 ipad 2s, one is still quite good, the other you cant even use safari on it because its so slow, upgraded that one, as someone said will be waiting to see what feedback is on forums before upgrading it past the next one. Though think Apple may have got wise to it, the latest update to ios9 only goes on the ipad Air, the 2, 3 and 4 wont get it.

plewis00
23 Mar 16 #63
It can handle it but even Apple knows they're stretching it - every new iPad launched now has 2GB RAM with iOS9, I'm sure Apple is slowly crippling all old devices and forcing people to upgrade.

Nearly 40% more for an extra 12 months warranty? I'd take this deal over that personally.
JhonSeb0810
23 Mar 16 #66
I know that, the problem is they should've stopped support for the ipad 2 years ago. its last iOs version should have been ios 7. Look at the first ipad. I think that stopped at ios 5. And its so much faster than my ipad 2 which is ios 9.

What i'm trying to say is think before updating the software. I'm sure the ipad air 1 can handle ios 9 just fine but when ios 10 comes, not sure about that.

again depends what you want to store.my nexus 9 is 16gb and honestly i store few games and when no longer use them delete them.

23 Mar 16 #75
Not really true! Apple are moving a lot of content onto iCloud these days. As an example "iCloud Photo Library" can automatically reduce photo storage to small thumbnail images - when needed the full-sized images are downloaded again.

Funny how people can suddenly get obsessed with RAM. Most apple devices run fine on 1GB RAM. I've got a oneplus 2 with 4GB RAM and a Pixel C with 3 and they run about the same as my iPhone 6. The processor and screen resolution in combination with GPU are much bigger issues. iOS can be limiting at times but it's very well optimised. It's like when people say need 16GB in their PC or Mac when they use word and surf the net!
tightar5e to cantonbean
23 Mar 16 #84
No, in this case the 1GB is limiting - and often causes webpages to crash and reload. There was a time when you couldn't open the Guardian website, without it crashing/reloading on an iPad Air.

(Its one way to sell you a new iPad if you have given up reading the advertorials on the Guardian for the latest Apple product). Still £179 is good if you have never owned an iPad, but as an upgrade, most would be better getting an iPad Air 2, if they were looking for improvement over an iPad 3/ 4

Well depends on what version of iOS, Version 8.x was very buggy, its not doing it on 9.3 (yet), I occasionally get it now (since 9.x) but if you are running iOS 8 its an issue. You can often improve things by closing down open Apps/Background Apps. So its not a failed memory chip, as such.

Copy and Paste is buggy as hell too. (often not copying, when you have). Even selecting the URL in the OP's Header to copy is not straightforward. Try it!

I love the iPads for consumption but I wouldn't buy a iPad Pro because iOS just isn't good enough for a 'pro device' at the moment. Bluntly, iOS is just not good enough for a £600+ device. But in the £200-£300 price point iOS is fine, best in its class.

This would be my sole reason for upgrading from an iPad 1, a few websites crash on loading.
I've also noticed its wi-fi is not as good as on an iPhone 5s.

But then the iPad 1 refuses to die, but if it did then this Air1 looks better value than the almost identical Air2

Should be fine for a year or 2 until apple update the os to cripple devices with less than 2gb ram. Still for the price I would say this is the one to get. by the time you need to upgrade there will be a better one or the "ipad pro mini" or whatever its called will be cheaper and you could probably sell this on for £100 (no way you would only lose £80 on the new one in 2 years)

Well there's the samsung tab a 9.7, which has an extra 0.5gb of ram and boasts the longest battery life for standby and for wifi internet use. Sure, the screen quality is a bit potato, but why would you watch 4k movies on a 9 inch screen in the first place?

and then there's the Lenovo A2 A10-70., comparable screen quality to the ipad, it has 2gb of ram, has excellent battery life, albeit not as good as the samsung tab a 9.7.

You can buy both of those tablets for around or under £179

For all those struggling along with their old iPad 2s just set them in DFU mode and do a clean restore. Then disable transparency, motion and background app refresh. Providing you don't try and overrun it with apps that weren't really designed for it then it should work reasonably well. Mine is great for the basics; email, browsing and streaming apps.
Hope this might help some of you.

to be honest a refurb from Argos eBay is complete luck of the draw.... bought my daughter a laptop at Christmas and on setting up the left hand side of the keyboard didn't work. offered refund or repair, it was Lenovo which has to be sent to Germany so they state av6 to 8 week turnaround. it's important to note that you will never be offered an exchange it will only ever be a repair or refund no matter if your have the item one day, week or month. it has taken my 4 returns and refunds to get one that up to now seems to be fully functioning. all faulty products need to be notified to Argos ebay, and general Argos store will take nothing to do with it. they send you a collect plus returns label for free.

got mine today from parcelforce. VERY happy

Pros:
* Top notch condition - looks brand new
* Packaged well
* delivered fast (less than 24 hours)
* 9.2 IOS which means better chances of a JB

Cons:
* No original packaging from Apple - selling on would be harder

Overall very 9/10 because was expecting a box but will keep it as its great for just £179.

24 Mar 16 #160
It does but, if its got any Apple warranty left or hasn't been registered then better taking it back to Apple, that way you will get an immediate replacement rather than a refund or repair from Argos. Guess though if you went with an Apple replacement and had only a few months left of Apple warranty though Argos might not repair or refund for what is left of the 12 months warranty they would give.

Sorry late reply I didn't see you had responded. You might want to actually try these devices. The ipad had much better performance than both of these devices and I would be very surprised by your claim of battery life. In my experience nothing comes close to ipads battery life. RAM is not equal to performance and especially so for ios as they are optimized for the lower RAM, there is no true multi tasking so extra RAM is a waste. The cpu and gpu in the ipads are always the best at the time. To get anything close to a ipad air user experience you would need something like a pixel c and even then for most it would be a worse experience because android just isn't as good on tablets. I say this as someone with both and ipad and an android tablet and actually really like my android tablet for the freedom you get with it (expandable storage, ability to install emulators etc) but I know that for most people an ipad will be better suited.

Mine has a 12w charger (presume this is a newer gen ipad, not the original Air? ), this version: http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MD836B/B/apple-12w-usb-power-adapter

Not sure if there will be much difference, perhaps charging rate will be different.

Yea if you take a look that's a theoretical 49 hours idle (not standby i.e. min screen brightness doing nothing - a very weird test) My ipad mini 2 gets about 15 hours screen on time with a 20 days standby. I've not had another device get close to that for standby time (not that its a huge deal but nice anyway)
lehappymerchant
24 Mar 16 #186
They've standardized the test, not just on min brightness, but for wifi surfing which I tthink involves a webpage being loaded a set amount of time. I think that's the fairest way you can compare devices, seems thorough to me. Of course, I've never ever used an apple device myself and I don't have the samsung tab a, so I can't really say for sure based on personal usage.

was hoping for a Apple box, got a plain brown one
also things didn't sound good, something rattling in the box

However once opened, it was wrapped in a large bubble sleeve inside
absolutely made up, there's a ting, tiny scratch on the back, apart from that its 99.9% perfect

was going to keep it/share with the wife, the daughters now claimed it

Not sure if its been mentioned, but the Model number for mine is Model No.A1474 - MD788B/A

See I am in the Republic of Ireland, I ordered this via Parcel Motel where the iPad gets delivered to the HQ in the NI (UK), the courier than takes it from there then down to me in the ROI. So on Argos part, it's arrived. Parcel Motel will drop it off to me tomorrow morning. I did this as Argos Uk don't deliver to the ROI so this loophole helps massively. I just hope it in good nick as it'll be a pain to try and send it back! Lol

oddballjamie to pibooba
25 Mar 16 1 #211
The term Manager's Special is used in their warehouse clearance stores and it usually refers to a clearout of a line at a heavier discount than usual.

I don't believe it has any reference to condition as Ebay has lead people to believe.

I just hope those who have had unacceptable iPads delivered actually leave negative feedback on Ebay. Then and only then will they do something about quality control.

Just a big thanks to everyone for all the feedback replies (feedback on hukd is often the best reason to come back to a closed thread), useful for people like me, that were hesitant-for future reference (The 1GB ram put me off upgrading+being too similar) though I need a new one. The large iPad Pro has 4GB, so ram is going to be a issue with iOS updates going forward, to mark a cut-off for older models (my take).

Would be useful to add a rough time/date ordered, if you got in early or late with this deal to work out what order Argos distributed them, i.e. Pristine first, tatty ones later, or other way round, or just random, always good to know.
sat555
26 Mar 16 #220
Mine arrived today in poor secondhand condition. It was floating around a large cardboard box! It had a 2 inch bash to the corner. Really disgraceful of Argos to advertise this as anything than 'C' grade stock IMHO. Look out for the next batch on the Argos ebay outlet of all the returns. Needless to say return requested and I won't be paying for postage. I should be charging Argos for wasting my time.

For those who are still wanting an iPad air, my son bought one from here which turned out well for him fortunately, now I would like one too, I notice John Lewis has them at £249 with two year guarantee, do you think that the iPad air will drop still further with the new iPad or will it go up? appreciate any comments, I was an android user, have a Nexus 7 2013, and an lg g2, but fed up with constant lock ups and poor software and firmware, while a lot cheaper, it feels second rate to apple, never thought I would say that!

iPad Air has been discontinued. The price is only going to go one way.
oddballjamie
26 Mar 16 #225
There wouldn't have been order such as pristine first as that would've meant some kind of quality control.

They would have had pallets of returned iPads that some work experience kid would've turned on, then off and threw it back in a box. Some people will come lucky and get one that's been returned in good condition and others will get knackered ones.

It's the same on every Argos refurbed deal posted on here.

If you live nead a clearance store you can go down and see this in practice. All products graded the same and you pick the least tattiest.

Unlike official Apple refurbs which are pretty much like new.
haggisheid
26 Mar 16 #226
So do you think it is worth hanging on a bit longer? The deal from John Lewis finishes on 30th March, thought of ordering one now, hanging on to it a month without using it and seeing which way the prices go, then I could return it if the price drops some more.

Your money, although once they sell out, it's game over.

I'd be looking at other ways of getting it cheaper, combining it with Morrisons Fuel Save and O2 Priority (not sure if that's still on) and buying from Currys.

Personally I wouldn't pay £250 for a discontinued 2 1/2 year old tablet. I went for the Air 2 with cellular for £315 for my monkey, normally retails at £450.

26 Mar 16 #236
I ordered a laptop a while ago from Argos Ebay for someone and it failed after a couple of months. They didn't back anything up and lost loads of work. That was the last straw with Argos, had too many bad new and refurb items from them.

Tesco Ebay are bizarre, I had a PS4 from them that was described as new with marked packaging. It was clearly used and the pad had chunks missing, I kept requesting a refund and they made me three cash offers for compensation. Took me ages to get them to actually except it back.
haggisheid
27 Mar 16 #237
From your experience, I can imagine you will stay away from refurbished eBay deals, very disappointing that they sell these things like they have been professionally checked over.
oddballjamie
27 Mar 16 #238
Professionally is a very loose term, technically anyone being paid for a service is a professional.

Argos have been upto no good way before refurbs on Ebay. They've been caught selling used as new in their stores several times.

28 Mar 16 #239
When mine arrived the iPad hadn't a single blemish, I wonder was it used at all. It was wrapped in the clear plastic sticker like new too. Only issue was the charger which according to apple was a faulty charger.

It's very possible the iPad itself was new or used very seldom and the whole thing may went insold on this basis I believe.

So the gamble worked out perfect in getting a new ipad pretty much. The changer is not working but I am being sent a replacement by apple. Delighted with the unit itself.
