I bought one of these last week to replace my Haswell Pentium G chip on my LGA1150 motherboard. I am very pleased with the performance boost. There's a bonus in the reduced power consumption too. The official Intel ARK link is here: http://ark.intel.com/products/80809/Intel-Core-i7-4790T-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz

This quad core 8 thread i7 has a TDP of 45W and typical power consumption of just 36W. There are only 'mini' reviews of this particular processor online, but they both sing high praise of it:
https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18630657
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2390156

CEX says there are 18 left in stock online. Mine came in very basic bubblewrap but has no signs of 'use'. After plenty of testing in the last week I'm happy there's no issues with it and also you get a 2yr warranty with these guys, which is some reassurance rather than getting a used component from your average eBayer.

There's not much that can go wrong with a non-k Intel CPU. They can't be overclocked so there's no issues of abuse there. You'll know pretty soon after installing it if it's faulty or not (and so should CEX if it's properly tested).

What exactly isn't a "good idea" with buying a used, locked Intel CPU?

They either work or they don't so when it arrives if it's working it'll probably be fine for another 5 or 10 years. Overclocked CPU's might be a cause for concern of course but even overclocking may only reduce the lifespan by 50% and a CPU may well last 10 to 20 years although it'll be of little use in 20 years time.

Actually CPUs wont even overheat anymore as they all have thermal sensors, if it gets too hot they slow down, or in extremis they shut off.
This seemed to be a bargain especially for a HTPC.

Intel makes very powerful processors and I can't see any problems with you using this one. CPUs don't generally die unless they've been overheated which is rare. As long as its properly cooled, CPUs are generally immortal. Hell, I had an old Core2Duo 1.8GHz in a box, unpackaged with other junk in it for about 3 years. As a joke, I cleaned it off with windex, dried it, popped it into a socket 775 motherboard and it fired right up perfectly. CPUs are extremely durable.

A CPU is without any doubt THE most reliable component of a PC.
Ask yourself seriously, how many processors have you ever had fail in your lifetime? Excluding ones that havent had sufficient cooling and therefore overheated, and/or ones that have been subjected to harsh overvolting/overclocking (this wouldnt even apply to this processor as it is core locked).

I have had ONE processor fail on me - an AMD Duron 1300Mhz about 17 years ago, And the reason? I put the heatsink on the wrong way round.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a 2nd hand processor, provided the pins are intact.

I have not been playing at 1080p for sometime, 1440 and now 4k, so not sure if it can make a difference. I own the 2600k and the 3770k and also a xeon w3670 and can clearly see that the HT works on BF. I must say that I only tested at much lower frequencies to see what the impact is and it does work. Bf4 does not need much cpu power but I will test again and at 1080p to see what difference it can make

I've not kept up with changes in PC tech, so would be grateful for some advice.

My current system is an i7 920 with an AMD r9 270x. I only really play league of legends, but would like to reduce my power usage to save on electricity bills. Would this be a good switch to make if I were to get a decent mobo (like would I get an increase in cpu power and could I do away with the graphics card)? How good are the graphics with these cpu compared to a budget/medium budget graphics card, and does anyone know if I could play LoL at 1080p or 1200p with max settings?
madhatt3r to rofldinho
20 Mar 16 #63
Not at max settings, maybe medium or slightly higher with AA turned off using Intel iGPU, if you only play League of Legends then it isn't worth upgrading, that game isn't going to push the CPU to max load.

Install the latest ATI Crimson drivers, select Gaming tab, then League of Legends, under Profile OverDrive set GPU Clock to 450MHz and Power Control slider to the lowest setting it would allow then click apply, in game you can max out the settings and select frame rate cap to 60 FPS, that should cap the power draw on the 270X.

I had the Intel i5-4570, i5-4590, i7-4770, i7-4771, 4790T and currently the 4790K, all the i7 chips give a higher minimum frame rate than the i5 versions, with various apps running in the background the extra 2MB L3 cache and HT helps, there is little difference in between all the i7 chips in gaming, only in benchmarks and rendering/encoding.

At £135 this is a real bargain, the best all round chip you could possibly buy, for only gaming you could probably find a cheap i5-4xxx for around £90, using the rest of the money on a better video card, for something like a production rig this i7-4790T is unbeatable.

Take the 2500 out and put it back in again then, ive just saved you a fortune lol.

I actually have the 3770k also bought second hand, overclocked to 4.9ghz without even deliding! I went further, but i was worried (even though temps were fine), so backed it back down. I think im very lucky and received a great chip.

The only reason i even bother overclocking is for fsx/p3d, its a notoriously inefficient pierce of software and will use all you throw at it, and still lag grrr.

Very basic post, which everyone on here should already know about. Unfortunately you've missed the point with my comment... it's not to do with reliability, it's to do with not knowing what's happened to that used item before. It's not something you can just look at or test briefly to check if it's going to be decent or not. My key worry would be once my HTPC is up and running, and the hassle of having to dissamble everything, then order a new part, return the old one, and put together the HTPC again. Most people going for 'T' series will be after something for an HTPC, and most of those cases do not lend themselves for being opened and closed again, especially with regards to CPU access. It's cheap for a reason, so you're buying in to the hassle, and for some, that's ok.

I've run my CEX sourced i7 4790T rock solid for the past week or more, many hours of normal office work plus HD video encoding plus some gaming (Borderland series). Happy to get £30 (eBay) for my old Haswell Pentium to offset the cost too.

Doesn't matter - all modern cpu have internal sensors and will throttle if they hit their tjmax. Much more of an issue is overvolting - if some kid pushes 1.65v vcore through his chip for that "1337" overclock, the dielectric will break down, and the chip will quickly fail.

Define "very high"? Are we talking over the thermal specifications of the CPU?

This is a two year old (at most), low power CPU that retails for around £250 going for just £135 with a two year warranty on the used market.

Foregoing a £115 discount when it should have been tested by the seller, and the fact it's only had a maximum usage period of up to two years, the risk of it going wrong is low IMO.

Not sure why so many people want to crap on the deal so much to be honest. Seems like there is a lot of distrust with used PC components.
donslibi
20 Mar 16 #47
You won't know how it's been used/abused both physically when fitting it (incl. correct paste) and when using it, regardless of overclocking, these could have been constantly sat at very high temps for example.

miaomiaobaubau
20 Mar 16 #44
I am sorry you wrong, the HT can gain up to 15% or very slightly less on gaming and 25% on anything else. I agree some games dislike it. Not sure about these 2011 CPU's with 8+8 or more. I also got a xeon 6+6 for the 1366 and despite being slower than a 3770k for each core, it performs better on a game like C3, HT is a must for this type of game. Performed test on BF4/BF3 too and they benefit from the HT obviously to an extent as the do not need a lot of CPU power but usually anything can easily be tested when lowering the frequency to see when the HT can benefit
scott_87
20 Mar 16 #43
Seems a good deal to me though I don't know how they test there chips. I've sold a few old ones to CEX and all they did was visually check it over. They didn't book it in test. But with the 2 year warranty if you did happen to be unlucky and get a faulty chip that got through the net you should be covered albeit with some inconvenience.

For gaming, absolutely. The extra 4 HT threads don't gain much for gaming. Some games perform better with HT disabled.

20 Mar 16 #40
Ok, I take it in terms of gaming the i7 has little advantage over my current i5 too?

Thought it would be a nice little upgrade but I think I was mistaken. Even if I sold the i5 4430 it would probably end up costing me about £40-50 so not worth it by the sounds of it....
plewis00
20 Mar 16 #39
They have very good thermal control - the CPUs are generally robust and Intel have very low power consumption too. Likewise, I can't see a used CPU being an issue at all especially with 2 year warranty from them. I saw an i7-3820 for £95 in my local CeX.
ST3123
20 Mar 16 #36
Anyone know how this would compare with an i5 4430 at 3GHZ? I realise it probably wouldn't be a huge upgrade but as it's for the living room HTPC I like the idea of cutting the heat and power consumption but obviously not if it is likely to be slower than what I have already?

Also my current CPU as I believe all i5 are, is a pure 4 core design with no extra threads, do the 4 extra threads on the i7 help at all with overall performance?
rev6 to ST3123
20 Mar 16 #37
It wouldn't be a worthy upgrade to be honest. The extra threads help with specific tasks like encoding or using virtual machines but as a HTPC... Unless you want the lower TDP.
fishmaster to ST3123
20 Mar 16 #38
Cutting heat and power consumption, negligible meaning makes no difference for that purpose, meaning it's not worth considering it. Also would you need the extra threads for a HTPC I doubt it.

I was thinking of trading in some of my old rare and collectible Gamecube games, as they have good trade-in value on CEX site but heard CEX are shifty and can lose your stuff without compensating you or honouring trades. What are people's experience here with sending out stuff in trade with CEX?

Unless you are running a Pentium G with an 1150 already, this isn't worth considering.

No issue with the used chip, just that it's not a huge upgrade over any i5 on the 1150 socket already.

Unless you are in the same position as OP, save the money and get a bigger upgrade for slightly more or wait and upgrade to 1151.
Bobbith
20 Mar 16 #23
The standard 4 core turbo clock is 3.3ghz anyway, so it's going to be running at that sort of speed most of the time, I wonder if it could sustain 3.9 on all four? Tempted to grab one of these.
rev6 to Bobbith
20 Mar 16 #24
Maximum rated frequency is 2700MHz, with turbo on all cores at 3300MHz. Three cores have a 3600MHz turbo ceiling. Two cores can boost to 3800MHz, and single core turbo is 3900MHz.

As long as it was used within the thermal margins for the CPU, there's very little chance of problems. Additionally. any CPU that was exceeding the thermal margins would downclock and eventually the system would shut down rather than fry itself.

You'd have to be extremely unlucky to get a consumer grade CPU that had been running under load under such conditions that it damaged itself. I can't help but feel that the potential for problems is negligible.

Edit: The savings on the deal are well worth the risk with this exact CPU selling for around £250 retail.
