The HDD in my "gaming" desktop PC went pop when I turned it on the other day. I am currently unemployed and on benefit so our family are surviving on less than £115 per week. This is a deals site and I come here looking for the lowest possible price. I might just about swing it with my partner to buy a £25 SSD and put the OS on that and then try to recover some data from the HDD.
How much luck do you think I'd have if I tried to use the Nate1492 argument on my partner, and tell them that an £80 SSD offers much better value-for-money? My guess would be: no chance whatsoever :stuck_out_tongue:

Don't think it's that bad...my other Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB is worse than this.

Sounds to me as if the Customs Value is just a fiddle so Customs don't charge you VAT. Although I might not sure how VAT is charged between EU countries. For online services/products I've been changed VAT. Do Amazon EU outlets add a low Customs Value when shipping? Do they add one at all?

same here thought the £14.99 thing was a bit cheeky lol unless that's their buy price so the "real" value and not the retail value.
to carl99 who's speed tested it, out of interest what sort of figures do a mechanical drive achieve for comparison? I dont know what your rights are sorry but I'd suggest ringing their CS to see what they have to say about it and say you're thinking about exercising your right to return under the distance selling regulations act

My drive arrived today.
I have tested the read/write speed on a USB3.0 enclosure and I am getting very disappointing results.
Read is about 250 and writing is slightly over 110 on crystal marks
If this is true after installing can I try and return it because they claim approx 500 for read and write

Sure, it's not a misspelled word. It's simply the wrong word to use, spelled correctly. You weren't being pedantic, I am being pedantic. You were trying to disprove my point by pointing out a grammar error. You were using an Ad hominem logical fallacy. You 'poisoned' the well. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poisoning_the_well
It's funny that you actually mention your two cost drives being more 'cost effective' yet I linked a 480GB Hard Drive that costs the same price! Look again.
So you can get 360GB for 70 quid. Or you can get 480GB for 80 quid! (Or 85 quid if you prefer the Sandisk).
So you are absolutely wrong about cost effectiveness here.
And again, you somehow implied that because I haven't heard of Integral, that I lost credibility. You admitted to the same lack of knowledge just now.
And I absolutely disagree with the concept that SSDs are 'getting pretty mature now'. They are a rapidly evolving drive technology with vastly new and updated hardware. HDDs are mature tech that isn't adapting fast. You can count the number of advancements on HDD drives each year on one hand. With SSDs? If you go back even 12 months you have a totally different landscape. Not to mention the wild price swings.
I agree with your point. There is a cost / performance balance you need to play while buying components. Absolutely true.
This is simply not that great in either cost nor performance. 25 quid for 120gb is 20.8p per GB. The 480gb Kingston is 16.6p per GB. The 480gb Sandisk is 17.7. The 240gb Sandisk is 18.7
And that's just looking at the size, ignoring that the Kingston and Sandisk drives are also superior performers.
Look, here's the only situation I'd buy this drive. I want a 120gb SSD and I can't spend a dime more than 25quid.
If that's not your situation, I recommend any of the other 3 SSDs I've talked about.
I can't find the 45 quid 240gb at the moment and I am going to stop looking for now, unless someone requests... But the point is unchanged, better value is out there.

You do realize I spelled every word correctly in my post, right? Are you just blindly assuming I've got a spelling error in my post? Or can you actually not spell yourself?
Also, why would you suggest running 2 SSDs instead of 1 larger one? It's been shown that larger SSDs perform better than smaller SSDs.
The Sandisk 480GB is 84.99, giving it a much better £ per GB ratio. The 240gb Sandisk is/was 44.99http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/sandisk-480gb-plus-ssd-using-code-ssd-ebuyer-84-99-2411190http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/kingston-ssd-now-v300-480gb-sata3-2-5inch-ssd-79-98-ebuyer-2410730
And Integral are not a well known SSD company.
Also, this post, like the previous post, does not contain spelling errors. I don't get why that's even something you'd point out even if there was errors, but the fact there were none... That baffles me!
Well as you asked "It's not 25% more elsewhere, and who really can get buy with a 120gb SSD these days?"
Yes I was being pedantic.
As for why do I have 2 SSD drives. Multiple reasons for that, hardware I've decided to keep using while buying newer and better kit, greater redundancy - if one fails I only have to reinstall\restore programs or OS, not both. Ease of cloning, I have multiple Sata600 ports, so why not use them.
While a 480GB drive may be faster, it isn't more cost effective than me still using my existing 120GB Samsung 840 Pro for my OS while using a cheap Sandisk 240GB that I picked up for £45.
Back to my original point, buying a PC component is always a balance between Cost and performance. Adding anything to the budget of an item can multiply out of control, even if you only start with one component.
As for integral, they may be newish to SSD drives, not checked their history. As a company they are a known entity for solid state media, so they aren't a new start up company joining a primordial product category. SSD drives are getting pretty mature now.

No that is not terrible logic. I get by with 120GB drives in an i5 laptop and my i5 desktop. Why because my laptop is a surfer and my desktop uses it as an OS drive. I then use a 240GB drive for software and 2TB for storage.
If you are going to wade in belittling my sound comments. At least learn to spell better than me.
As for my logic. Every PC component has better options available for x% more. Some people choose to build to a budget.
As for integral being Unknown, then you just undermined yourself yet again. Then speed wise, any SSD is faster than a mechanical drive that many PC devices still come with. So it's an upgrade for anyone.
Please don't let the facts get in the way of your wee rant. As you know so much better, please go find us deals for better and more or equal cost effective products.
You would be silly to put programs on an SSD and then miss of Games where you receive the greatest benefit. If you put for example MS Word on an SSD it would probably speed up the initail opening by a fraction of a second, but an SSD in a game has almost continuous benefits.

If you're not 'tech savvy' enough to handle one of the consumer orientated NAS' then you're not tech savvy enough to handle a local disk either. Don't get me wrong I know these people exist, the ones that can never find where they saved a file because they don't understand how disks, folders and desktops work.
bankbandit
17 Mar 16#66
Note that one owner/reviewer pointed out that the controller used in this is the Phison S9 which has a max transfer speed of 500 MB/s read, 200 MB/s write (Source: Official Phison PS3109-S9 ) The benchmarks screenshots from other users also concur with this lower write speed.
The quoted "Write up to 420MB/s" I'm guessing is achieved using compression, which only works on compressable data. For the uninitiated, this means you'll only achieve the lower/real write speed for almost all media files.
I've not voted either way since I never buy these kind of drives, but do recognise that it is cheap. However, caveat emptor! you get what you pay for.

Stupid question alert but i've not actually done an SSD upgrade on any of my kit before - do these come with the cable as well or I will need to buy a SATA cable in addition to the drive? Going to put this in the kids old Vostro 200 which I assume will be fine as it has a SATA port on the motherboard. It's still on it's original HDD after nearly 10 years so think it's time to replace it.

dam0wned to mickael28
17 Mar 161#32
People tend to use low-storage SSD's for their operating system and programs they use a lot. Makes a ton of difference.
Then you can use a cheaper (but much, much slower) hard drive (1,2, 4TB or whatever) for everything else. Games, media, whatever.
topss to mickael28
17 Mar 16#33
On a system that can only accommodate one internal drive it makes sense to use the largest capacity you can. But on a system where you can install more than one drive, a small boot drive (like this) + other drives for data can be a good option and personally the route I would take. Even on a laptop where you could replace the DVD (if there's one) I would use a small SSD and a large SSD/HDD in place of the DVD.
This would also make a pretty fast/robust portable drive if used with a usb 3.0 enclosure (under £10).
stevenfeeney to mickael28
17 Mar 16#48
If you work a lot in the cloud like I do then 128GB is more than sufficient. I pay £1.60 (less than a coffee) a month to Google for 100GB of cloud storage which synchs across all of my devices from phone to tablet to laptop and desktop and 50p per month to Apple for cloud storage of all my photos (50GB) which keeps my phone clear for apps.
Go cloud and never look back; I only keep a larger hard disk in my desktop for gaming.
Also; you can swap out your current 500GB drive and put it into a £3 caddy and now you have a solid, working external backup device.

It is a good price but I bought the recent Sandisk offer which I am pleased with. It would be interesting to get some feedback from someone who buys this on speeds though for future reference

Thinking the same, but this should be good for some sensitive data backup in a portable enclosure

Anyone else? "Order dispatched 23rd"
Do people think this drive will be reliable? I really can't afford to have my pc go down for any length of time.
You can use the following promo code: RanChen
for 5% off making it £28.49 but this may affect cashback if you use TCB or Quidco.
received mine yesterday too, in the same packages as everyone else.
Un-expire?
Suggest to the other tester that perhaps the issue might therefore be USB interface related?

to carl99 who's speed tested it, out of interest what sort of figures do a mechanical drive achieve for comparison? I dont know what your rights are sorry but I'd suggest ringing their CS to see what they have to say about it and say you're thinking about exercising your right to return under the distance selling regulations act
I have tested the read/write speed on a USB3.0 enclosure and I am getting very disappointing results.
Read is about 250 and writing is slightly over 110 on crystal marks
If this is true after installing can I try and return it because they claim approx 500 for read and write

It's funny that you actually mention your two cost drives being more 'cost effective' yet I linked a 480GB Hard Drive that costs the same price! Look again.
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/kingston-ssd-now-v300-480gb-sata3-2-5inch-ssd-79-98-ebuyer-2410730

Got this one for favourite game storage, applications ect

Heat!
It's not 25% more elsewhere, and who really can get buy with a 120gb SSD these days? Why not buy the 45 quid Sandisk on offer?
This isn't that great of deal, because I would *never* suggest to someone they buy it.
Is it the lowest cost SSD at 120gb? Yes. Would I ever suggest this? No.
Heat OP.
3% Quidco, don't get distracted by the easter egg game and forget to order though .....
For most there isn't that much of a gain.
I always wondered what could be the usefulness of these smaller sizes? ie, what can you use 120GB SSD for? and do you need another hard drive for storage in this case?
Then you can use a cheaper (but much, much slower) hard drive (1,2, 4TB or whatever) for everything else. Games, media, whatever.
This would also make a pretty fast/robust portable drive if used with a usb 3.0 enclosure (under £10).
Go cloud and never look back; I only keep a larger hard disk in my desktop for gaming.
Also; you can swap out your current 500GB drive and put it into a £3 caddy and now you have a solid, working external backup device.
It might be fat and bloaty but it'll easily fit on this
Ordered, thanks OP

Thanks
But, of course, if you're looking for as cheap as possible this is a great deal.
reviews here look good, not sure what they say tho!
...That is....try the SSD..............not the warranty... :-)
