Another HP business laptop. Good quality.

Lastest gen i3-6100U, quite powerful for an i3 U version. Score higher than i5-5200u is to my surprise.

Integrated HD Graphics 520 GPU is quite good for an integrated. I have read somewhere it is better than AMD Radeon R6. I could be wrong.

4GB RAM is small, but cheap and easy to upgrade.

The screen is non-FHD.

128GB M.2 SATA SSD is using the M.2 slot.

It has been confirmed that you can put in a 2.5 inch HDD for storage.

Win 7 Pro is a plus too.

450 G3 - P5T14ET
Use code "BQ216HPAF63" to get 4% off, pay £426.24 upfront.
6.06% TCB £25.83
£50 cashback
£150 trade-up cashback.
If all sucessful, work out £200.41.
HP confirmed that using discount code does not invalidate cashbacks.

Another option of 450 G3 - P4P52ET is £25 more, comes with i5-6200u, other specs are the same as the above one. Pay £506.40 upfront. 6.06% TCB, £50 cashback, £200 trade-up cashback, work out £225. (For this one, do not use 4% off code as it will reduce the trade-up cashback)

There is a free SATA connector, you can buy a 2TB 2.5 inch HDD for around £50/60 and put in for storage. You can have both 128GB SSD and 2TB HDD at the same time.

Model number is 450 G3 - P5T14ET
Individual end users can claim both cashbacks on one laptop. It has always been the case in the past. HP never ask a question.

£50 cashback

£150 tradeup cashback

A lot people seem have questions about cashback. I give a little summary below hope to clear things up. They are from last time I read it. I have not re-read, please double check and let me know if anything changed.

£50 cashback.
Straight cash, not string attached. Apply 30 days from invoice date.
HP need to know two things, how much you paid for, and confirmation of model no: 450 G3 - P5T14ET.
They need to a scan of your invoice when you apply. If 450 G3 - P5T14ET is not on invoice, you will need to upload a photo of the sticker on the box showing 450 G3 - P5T14ET as well.

£150 trade-up cashback
Apply straight away after you got your invoice.
There is no brand restriction. You can give HP your old device in whatever brands.
If you are claiming as individual end user, answer as follows:
Are you a UK VAT registered business? answer No.
Customer Type, answer "Small Business (1-10 staff)".
The basic logic is you are a sole trade under your own name with only one employee yourself. That was what Dabs contacted HP and found out in the very first HP cashback last year.

The conditions are:

1. Trade-in device must be fully working conditions. Any part not working, HP will take money off.
2. Tablet not less than 9 inch, laptop not less than 10 inch.

3. If you trade in PC/laptop originally comes with Win XP, no age restriction.
If you trade in PC/laptop originally comes with system other than XP, no more than 6 years old.

Cheapest way, you have an old one not needed.

The next is by a xp laptop off ebay for £20-30, a lot work because you have to make sure everything is fully function (battery etc).

The easiest way if you do not have an old device, is to buy a 9 inch tablet for less than £50, you only need to make sure the tablet is fully working. 2nd hand cheap ones especially those from China, or Nook HD+ from CeX.

NBC didn't review the i3-6100U version, but they did review an i5-6200U version (although with the FHD screen which this doesn't have). The part number for their review was P5T01ES isn't in the cashback deal:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/HP-ProBook-450-G3-Notebook-Review.155716.0.html
The chassis has two service covers but they look like they are screwed. I guess tool-less is reserved for Elitebooks.
Although not for this model, that review should give people some idea about this laptop.

Thanks for the comment.

Why is the 6th generation, i3-6100u scores so close to i5-6200u. I really do not know.

I would normally expect a bigger gap between i3 and i5 of the same generation.
huangxq2
17 Mar 16 #8
One thing will certainly change is battery life.

Although the one in the review has FHD is nice, FHD, i5, HDD do consume more power.

I expect this non-FHD 450 G3 has 7 hours battery just as 450 G2.

Otherwise, I would just amend the old one, rather than post as a new deal.

Well, remember that for mobile i3, i5 and i7 rarely mean much.
For desktop i3 would be 2C/4T, i5 4c and i7 4C/8T.
For mobile (if we ignore the actual i7 quad cores and the new i5 HQ's which are quad without HT), the difference is mainly turbo rates. That is, Intel's 15W 'U' CPUs mostly share the same die unless they have Iris Pro or something.
The Wikipedia (where all of the entries link back to Intel ARK):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skylake_(microarchitecture)#Mobile_processors
lists the turbo speeds of Skylake mobile chips. Taking that plus the Broadwell entry we get the following:
CPU = Base / 1C Boost / 2C Boost
i5-5200U = 2.2 GHz / 2.7 GHz / 2.5 GHz
i3-6100U = 2.3 GHz / 2.3 GHz / 2.3 GHz
i5-6200U = 2.3 GHz / 2.8 GHz / 2.7GHz
i7-6500U = 2.5 GHz / 3.1 GHz / 3.0 GHz
So in theory, mobile 15W 'U' series i3 and i5 should only vary by their turbo. The Skylake i3's base is higher than the Broadwell i5's plus the Skylake IPC gain should mean at even with 2 core boost they should be rather close. If any of the parts experience any thermal throttling (which should affect Turbo far more than base), those Passmark scores are not surprising.

I know there was discussion about whether individuals were eligible for the trade-up offer. Reading the T&Cs its clearly not aimed at consumers. I received an email shortly after submitting my claim including "As this promotion is for businesses and organisations, please could you confirm your company name?" - I had put N/A in the company name box so maybe something more creative is required?

Put your own name in as business name. You leave something as N/A, of course they will ask you for information.

Dabs confirmed with HP that individual users can claim both cashbacks, at the time, Dabs website even give instructions of how individual should answer the questions as per HP. Read the first HP cashback deals 11 months ago.

I Was lucky enough to get one at yesterdays price, arrived today and its a cracking piece of kit, well built, really fast, surprisingly light it also seems to have a fingerprint scanner (not had chance to test yet). The only slight downside I can see (and this is against the £400ish rrp) is the screen resolution, but that seems to be the case with most laptops unless you specifically spend the money on one with a fhd screen. The screen resolution is a non issue for the post cashback price. My only regret was not buying two - this ones for the wife.

18 Mar 16 #30
Glad to see you like it.

The quality difference between a good business laptop and budget consumer laptop is not something just in people's mind. It is real life, anyone can touch and feel. People should be able to tell the difference from the first minute they touch the laptop. It does not require you to open the laptop to vouch the better components they use inside.

I had HP 250 and 650 side by side. 250 is so much worse. I can feel it straight away. That is why when people want to spend £300 on HP 250 or 350, I always suggest spend the same money on a Probook 450/455.

(Probook 650 has docking ability make it thicker, heavier and more expensive, unless you need docking ability, otherwise do not go with it.)

I would always say this, if you can find business laptop at good price, always choose business laptops over budget consumer laptops. At today's price, there are normally some business laptops trading in the price range of budget consumer laptops.

According to the HP Tradeup site:

The HP EliteBook 725 still qualifies. Excellent built quality but the single module AMD processor is slow.
Other options are the other probooks like the 430 (AFAIK 13"), possible some of the others.
A few minutes spent with the list and google should get you an idea.

Most people would not notice performance between this i3 6100u and i5 5200u but the i5 has turbo mode to 2.7 GHz for all four threads which is not stated in most benchmarks which do not report burst modes (turbo). Because of this , it has dual memory channels to support this rather than one in the i3, so single thread performance will be significantly faster because of bursting with an extra memory channel.
Gkains
18 Mar 16 #26
i3 has a dual channel memory controller. In fact even Skylake Celeron has that:
http:[email protected]/specifications
As for turbo, all benchmarks well avail of that since it is automatic and can generally only be disabled in the BIOS of desktop motherboards (and why would anyone disable it?).
The reason this i3 is so close to the low i5s probably has more to do that on these 15W 'U' parts there isn't much boosting in the first place as they are all mostly thermally limited and probably can't sustain their turbo for any length of time.
But yes, while the i5 or i7 is boosting in turbo mode, it should feel more responsive.

Has the trade-up cashback come back for Elitebook 745? It had trade-up, then for some period it did not qualify for trade-up.

I agree. The 745 is nice, but the A6 is not good, less than half power of this i3. Really hope they put in something little stronger, a A8 or A10 would give much more comfort.

Some people bought it say the 745 heat up quickly which is worrying. I know it is an AMD, but the weak A6 is only Max 17w. Do not get why it heat up quickly? Maybe has something to do with is small form.

If want small form, do not need very strong power, Ultrabook is the answer. I have been using a nice one for over a year, cannot go back to something else.

I bought the deal on Wednesday (thanks Huangxq2), however it took them until yesterday to confirm the order and move it to the next stage. Now it says waiting stock, due to arrive 1st April! Firstly, has anyone who ordered this deal had confirmation of delivery etc? Also how is this going to effect cashback if I don't receive until April?
huangxq2 to WhiskeyFox
18 Mar 16 #46
That is something new. Looks like too many sold yesterday than they have in stock.

Some people who bought already received, read post before.

As how cashback works, it has always been according to the invoice date. Have you received an invoice, or do they only give you an invoice on dispatch?

Every month cashback is different. The exact same model might not qualify for cashback in April, only time can tell.

You have 14 days to return from receiving delivery. So in a way, you are safe.

The question is can you wait without the new laptop until the date they promised?

Not sure if the DSR applies as I assume that this would be classed as a business purchase, given that the trade in is intended for business customers. In which case the T&C's are different from consumer purchases, in which case there is no 'cooling off' period.

It's worth checking this out yourself, as I don't actually know but thought it was worth pointing out just in case. This is from HP Store's site:

If you are a business customer
(i.e. an individual or companies purchasing products or services for professional use)

You may change your mind and cancel your purchase and receive a full refund at any time before it ships provided it is not a nonstandard order (for example a PC built to your custom specifications).

Please note after shipment HP Store Business customers have no automatic right of return without cause (e.g damaged on arrival). In line with HP’s Business Terms and Conditions, customers will of course be able to return any product which is wrong or damaged following delivery and customers should notify HP as soon as possible in these circumstances

huangxq2
18 Mar 16 #53
Just tell them you are a consumer then. I think most of us are buying under individual names, there should not even be a question.

Still the same rules, HP does not have the power to tighten the rules themselves.

I have to say, before you point out, I did not know that the 14 day cooling off period do not apply to businesses. So for future reference, if buying under company name, this is something need to be considered.

If you are a consumer customer
(i.e. an individual purchasing products or services primarily for non-professional use)

At HP Store We want to make sure you’re happy with your purchase so you may change your mind and cancel your purchase and receive a full refund at any time before it ships and within 14 days from the day from receipt of your complete order or in the case of services and digital content the day of confirmation of your order. Please note that it is HP Policy that we must have received the original items back prior to issuing any refund or replacement product/s.

I reckon all of your deals will be short-lived as the prices on HP Store change very often.

As an example, I've been keeping my eye on a Probook 430 G3 for a couple of months, and the price has ranged from £540 to £464, and changes every few days. I eventually placed my order when it dropped to £464 a few weeks ago (also used the 4% voucher code).

I looked at the price this morning just out of curiosity, and it was £464 again, but now gone up to £496. So each time you post a deal, it will end up being expired shortly afterwards.

There always seems to be a code knocking around HKUD, and it's currently BQ216HPAF63 for 4% off business laptops costing over £400.

Price on HP changes daily. But the same laptops from other sellers are more stable, also qualify for cashbacks too. So if a Probook from other sellers at good price, they normally last some time.

I remember there was a tick box or something on the order form to say whether you're buying for business. I wasn't sure what to do, but left it unticked. But after submitting it, I then thought whether that would invalidate my trade in claim as obviously it was clear that it's wasn't a business purchase.

Luckily my claim was approved, but I'm now thinking that if that box was ticked, it could mean that you're classed as a business customer and therefore the DSR doesn't apply.

It is a good price with i5-6200u, although no M.2 SSD.

£216 after cashback, and possibly TCB.

If you plan to add in a M.2 SATA SSD, it is worth checking if it has a free M.2 connector. Do not take it for granted that a free M.2 connector will be there until you have seen a photo inside the laptop or someone confirmed it with you.

Quick question if I may, the 4% can this be applied to the P5T14ET in addition to the 6.06 TCB and the £50 and £125 cashback as well. Also, who pays the cost of sending the PC to HP and do they require the monitor as well.

topcashback
a website that will give you a share of the money it earns from directing you to a website where you make a purchase.
EG - I want to buy something from HP > I use my topcashback account to call up HP > I click the link to get directed to HP > topcashback tracks this > I make a purchase at HP for £100 > This transaction is confirmed at topcashback and they receive an amount of money from HP for being an affiliate and directing someone to their website who went on to make a purchase > you receive that money that was given to topcashback, eg 6.06% of the £100 = £6.06

What intrigues me is the " EliteBook 700 745 G1 - M3N17ES" listed in the trade up offers.
The model number M3N17ES is the 745 G2 as fall as I can tell - not the G1. Weird.
If it is the G2 then that's a (poor cpu, great screen) bargain. £320 at dabs - less £70 cashback. less £100 trade up.
£150 quid. Any thoughts on the G1/G2 issue?

huangxq2
23 Mar 16 1 #109
This laptop is discussed already in the thread.

It is a good deal if you do not mind the quite weak A6.

The i3-6100u score more than twice of this A6. And the batter life of the i3 will be better.

The A6 has better resolution and smaller screen.

Both are well built business laptops.

To me, this A6 is on the weak side even for day-to-day use. I would recommend get the i3 at £200 instead of this A6 at £150.

23 Mar 16 #110
Do you see both cashbacks still available?

You asked the question, but you never replied.
huangxq2
23 Mar 16 #111
No, that is not correct.

If you can claim input VAT on the laptop, the cashbacks are inclusive of output VAT too.

I have claimed for my company before. I knew this for a fact.

It is £150 after all cashbacks which inclusive of VAT, which work out £125 net, not £96.67.

I think most of people who bought from this deal are individuals, we can leave VAT out of the story. If they are VAT registered business which can claim input VAT, they should know well how much it actually cost them.

huangxq2
23 Mar 16 #114

This is not the 1st time HP give out contradicting information.

If in doubt, you should ask them again, but this time tell them the working cashback links and ask them confirm. Do not make reference to your previous contact with them. If you do, they may stick to their original answer just to save themselves from the embarassment.

If the cashback is stated on their website, and can still be applied, it must be available.

huangxq2
24 Mar 16 #119
Yes. Sole trader's details only HMRC know, not available to public, not like a company.

Last year, we were told by Dabs to claim this way. And there were never question been asked by HP.

Do not know why this year they started asking questions. It may have something to do with the fact that many people contacted them regarding if individual end users can claim trade-up cashback.

I know. Those business laptops are certainly better in quality than budget consumer laptops. Those budget consumer laptops at £300 are worse than them in specs, quality and price (assume you get cashbacks).

Buy removable hard drive is cheaper than buy HDD alone, get the hard drive out and put in the laptop.

Tesco sometimes have 2TB 2.5 inch removable hard drive for £50, but not today.

2TB normally price is £60.

Or you could go for 4TB for £106.

huangxq2 to ja99son

Open the back cover, you will see.

No need for SATA cable, can you imagin a SATA cable in your laptop.

Laptop which comes with HDD normally has a small metal frame to fixed the hard drive stable. I doubt your laptop would come with that metal frame, and I do not know where you can buy or if there are other ways securely fix the HDD to your laptop without the metal frame.
(Do not buy those 2.5 to 3.5 frame, it is used to install 2.5 inch hard drive to a 3.5 inch space in PC, it is not for your laptop)

Hope somebody did the upgrade can contribute.

27 Mar 16 #139
I saw that last week as well.

I did not post because from HP website I could not tell what part number HP give to the laptop. The laptop with the same specs is P4P52ET. If HP give a different part number, the package would not qualify for any cashbacks.

It may well be the case that the laptop comes with the stick on the box saying P4P52ET, then it will be eligible for cashbacks.

The price after cashbacks between the two options are about the same. The only gain in doing so is only a laptop bag.

If you would like to try, please let us know your outcome.

I posted a link from ebay for the metal frame to fixed the HDD to 2.5 inch SATA space. I do not know why it disappeared.

Here is how it look. (This exact one may not fit your Probook, you have to find the right one)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HP-ProBook-4320S-Hard-Drive-Caddy-Tray-/182048825883?hash=item2a62f4a21b:g:zgMAAOSwAuNW4B3A

Of course, you could remove the DVD-RW, buy a caddy and put the HDD there. But this defeat the purpose to have both 2.5 inch SATA and M.2 SSD, unless you want more than 1 HDD for storage. In that case I would suggest go for 4TB 2.5 inch HDD at £105, cheaper per TB.
huangxq2
27 Mar 16 #141
Someone just told me that he put an additional 2.5 inch SATA SSD, HP did not supply a metal frame with the laptop (that is the same for every brand, unless you buy a laptop with 2.5 inch hard drive, the metal frame is not there).

The good thing is, he fit the SSD and does not need the metal frame.

You should open the back cover and have a try before buying any frame or caddy which may not be required.

28 Mar 16 #144
I thank you sir. It gets even better!
I didn't realise I could add a HDD and keep the DVD-R too; if I can I certainly will.
You have however confused me a little with regards to HDD sizes.
Someone mentioned buying this external 2TB HDD: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00TKFEE5S/?tag=ho01f-21 and breaking it down to extract the disk.
In your previous reply you state:
"Of course, you could remove the DVD-RW, buy a caddy and put the HDD there. But this defeat the purpose to have both 2.5 inch SATA and M.2 SSD, unless you want more than 1 HDD for storage. In that case I would suggest go for 4TB 2.5 inch HDD at £105, cheaper per TB"

I don't understand why there is a 1TB limit when using the spare slot....
huangxq2
28 Mar 16 #145
The laptop you bought comes with M.2 SSD using M.2 slot.

It has two options to add in a 2.5 inch SATA HDD. Both options can be used at the same time. So you can add in two HDD at most.

1. There is a spare space and SATA connector designed for a 2.5 inch SATA HDD. Use this option first.
Just remove the back cover you will see. Any laptop would normally require a metal frame to securely fixed the HDD to the laptop with screws. Someone told me that he was able to fix the HDD without the metal frame on the Probook 450 which I do not know how. The metal frame looks like this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182048825883?clk_rvr_id=1005246364839&rmvSB=true

2. 2nd option is to remove the DVD-RW, and replace with a HDD (need a caddy).

As to choice of HDD, 2.5 inch removeable hard drive is normally cheaper than 2.5 inch internal hard drive. So buy removeable hard drive, take out the box, and put the hard drive inside your laptop.

I was saying, if you want a lot of storage room, you can buy a 4TB 2.5 inch removeable hard drive. The price per TB work out cheaper on a 4TB hard drive than a 2TB or 1TB hard drive.

You only need to add 2 HDD if you want more than 4TB storage because the biggest 2.5 inch you can buy at a normal price today is 4TB per hard drive.

The laptop comes with 64 bits Win 7 Pro, there is no limitation on the size of HDD you add in.

There is no 1TB limit, that is your mis-understanding.

Taking it out of the caddy was easy as I managed it without any marks to the exterior using a guitar pick and a credit card (nothing metal) although a couple of the tiny interior plastic retaining pips have suffered minor damage. The caddy can be reused and tightly sealed but I suspect the pip damage would be a give away if sent back under warranty.

I do not know if HP actively check, but a lot of people never had problems in the past.

I think people would be better off to just claim through the normal procedure without disclosing anything extra. Save your questions until if the claim is declined.

How long has it taken for people to get the trade in laptop money out of HP?
I sent ours off on about the 7/8th April and have heard nothing since.

have you checked your progress online?
joenitro
29 Apr 16 #174
Yes and it's still showing as "approved".
I've checked other numbers fairly close to mine (higher and lower) and they are mostly showing as "approved" and will be paid within 30 days.
That's what's concerning me, why hasn't mine been validated yet :-)

I have just had both the 'trade up' and cashback confirmed. I purchased on the 30th March. Just have to wait for the money to appear in my bank account now.....

Good to know, thanks gunther.
Did you get an email to confirm the trade up cashback or did you track your claim online?
Did you mean that the £50 cash back has been approved in addition to your trade up claim amount?
gunther

I got seperate emails confirming both the 'trade up' (£125) and the cashback (£50)

Mine just stayed approved for a few weeks after I sent the tradeup back to hp, no indication that, they had received it or anything. Then last night got an email saying it had been received, tested and that I would be getting the tradeup cashback paid to my bank account. I guess they're just working through them.

I emailed the assistance team and receive a very swift response confirming they'd received it on the 14th April and that they'd make it a priority (which they certainly didn't need to do) to process it.

Ten minutes later, I received a separate email confirming the trade in value I was expecting (£200). Great service!
