That's a very nice machine for the money. Tempting.
To those asking about HP build quality, my old DV6799ea laptop is still alive despite numerous bashes, few drops, being flung about on a fast Virgin train - broken hinges but worked well, finally, was sat on by an older relative and the screen died but plugged into my TV via the HDMI cable and voilà, undead laptop!
I decided to try dell for kicks but have no qualms getting an HP.

Not sure it actually has a Bluray player? Says DVD multi burner in the description.
Would it easy to put in an ssd on this? And would I be able to keep the 1tb drive in there as well?
If do not mind non-FHD, go for Probook would be better than HP 250.

Dvd Burner but reads and plays Blu-Ray.
CD/DVD/Blu-Ray Drive: SuperMulti DVD burner
As for the SSD, it isn't a quick 'open backplate' on the back like some laptops and would mean dismantling the laptop almost entirely to replace the hdd, a bit of a headache and would void the warranty. I am not willing to dismantle a new laptop as simple as the task may be there is always risk of pulling a ribbon. I would 'assume' by design you cannot have more than one hdd in at once but if you were willing to remove the disc drive entirely you could always add a hdd bay there in replace giving you two.
Lack of SSD and voiding the warranty to put one in is the reason I can't pull the trigger on this as tempting as it is at such a good price. Not worth the hassle. I would buy a laptop with one already in it or with easy one screw access to the bay on the back that won't affect the warranty.
To note, these laptops are known to have bad trackpads and the keyboards are good but not great although an additional mouse would solve the trackpad issue. Backlight is a really nice feature but sadly red letters on this edition will make reading keys very strenuous. All in all at the price point it is an amazing deal but without an SSD will always feel sluggish. Choice is yours.
The last comment is incorrect (apologies smelly_pickle), most components are accessible via the removal of the base cover.
According to the HP maintenance manual (see link below) it also has an m2. ssd slot also. So you could keep the mechanical drive for data and move the OS to this.
Page 45 and on of the PDF, details bottom cover removal and replacement of HD, memory etc.
Hope this helps.
Edgeman13
23 Mar 161#43
I believe Smelly_pickle was (rightly) referring to the fact with many laptops there is a simple backplate section which can be removed to access the HD or RAM - this is not the case with this laptop. To replace the HD in this model requires that you remove the entire bottom cover of the laptop, which is not a quick task and, by exposing the components, increases the risk of accidental damage. The guide also indicates that this is for 'authorised service providers' and for a regular Joe to do it would void the warranty. The only parts which can be changed by a regular user are the battery and the optical drive. In the latter case, I presume you can switch this out for an SSD as you (and Smelly_Pickle) suggested. Hope that helps.

I've just done it and been accepted. based on the philosophy that you are not a vat registered company, bit instead a 1 person sole trader. the thread explains it. I ordered at 3pm on Monday and it was delivered by midday Tuesday. I filled in the forms and was accepted today, and I bought a 20quid 9 inch tablet off Gumtree to trade in, had it accepted and sent it off this afternoon. the 50quid cashback is claimed a month after receipt, the trade in cashback will be claimed once they've received and processed my tablet. 4%tcb/ quidco too, and a 4%off code at checkout- just make sure the 4% checkout code doesn't take your overall price down into a smaller trade in cashback bracket. :-)
smaller ram slightly, and smaller HDD, but for £200 and such a better quality laptop. a m.2 slot for ssd that can be accessed without dismantling the laptop, and another 4gb Ram if needed for upgrades will see it fly and much cheaper than this deal. :-)
Smelly_Pickle
23 Mar 161#49
Apologies I did fail to mention m.2. Looking at the manual posted I was right in thinking the entire back cover had to be removed to access the hd bay so the same applies for the msata. Admittedly it isn't a 'difficult' task but it is a risk and the optical bay is just one screw to remove and is easily accessible to add an SSD. Edgeman13 hit the nail on the head. I was referring to a small backplate that features on some laptops (mostly gaming) that gives really handy quick access to the hd bay and/or dimm slots that this laptop doesn't have.
I don't doubt that this is an amazing deal though as I have already stated and I haven't seen a laptop with these specs for the money but it isn't without some flaws which I thought worth a mention and if it was me I would not attempt an upgrade until the laptop was out of warranty and I feel confident in my ability. Computer parts sometimes just fail.

Taking away that its Star Wars.. is this really that good a deal? £405 is a lot of money.. what would £405 get you elsewhere?
The processor gets a benchmark score of nearly 4000 which seems good but only 6gb RAM is possibly a bit low?
I could really do with a new laptop in the next week or so and I’m really sick of looking!

6gb is plenty for most users and for a mid range laptop with this CPU would be fine.
Edgeman13 to mackemlad79
24 Mar 16#60
It's actually the Star Wars bit that's putting me off buying it (though I'm still loitering here in case something changes my mind). To my mind the Full-HD screen makes this - I've been trying to find a Full HD laptop with similar spec and can't find anything near. HP have one with a 256GB SSD with an i3 (benchmark 3518) for £459, but that's the closest I've found in the c.£400 region (edit: there are Lenovos in £450 region too, but the screens don't seem to get good reviews). If anyone knows of one I'd be happy to hear.
If you have an old tablet/laptop for trade the Probooks look a good option - but they're standard resolution screens.

24 Mar 16#58
Can anyone please confirm if the RAM can be upgraded in future and or is it not possible ???
waheedaamir1
24 Mar 16#61
I simply dont like star wars but FHD is what i want and there is simply nothing available with similar specs under £500 so this one is much better option. Also battery life is very important too and this one has 7 hours which is way too far than most other high end laptops.
Has anyone bought and used it ???
huangxq2 to waheedaamir1
24 Mar 16#67
Can it really last 7 hours? That would be impressive if it is true because it is a normal size laptop with FHD screen.
So far, I have only seen over 7 hours battery life in Ultrabooks with FHD screens, and good business laptops with non-FHD screens.
davej1710
24 Mar 16#62
Don't forget that memory shared with the graphics card set at a reasonably high resolution. I'd guess upto half of that will be eaten up on just the graphics card and OS.

The manual is only a guide.
For instance, Probook 455 G3 manual says there is a M.2 slot.
Yes, there is a space, but the M.2 connector is not there.
So you can only be 100% sure, if someone has the exact same model and open the back cover confirm it.
huangxq2
24 Mar 16#66
The probook is a real good price after all cashbacks. There are also other options too. i3-6100u + SSD for cheaper, and i5-5200u + M.2 SSD for slightly more.
I think why this HP is good is the FHD. I do not know how good is the FHD screen though, do not know if it is TN or IPS neither.
waheedaamir1
24 Mar 16#68
Listing states that it can last up to 7.2 hours so hence i said that but only those can confirm who have this laptop. Anyone there to confirm and also if the RAM can be upgraded ????
huangxq2
24 Mar 16#69
I am not doubting you. I am also promoting people to answer the question.
I guessed that it is stated in the details, but I do expect the over 7 hours has some over-statement given the size of laptop and specs.
Hopefully, someone bought it and can confirm.
waheedaamir1
24 Mar 16#70
I appreciate what you just said but with this price tag even half of 7 hours battery life will be good enough. Most laptop under £500 these days has only 3 hours battery life

Thought about it over night and have now pulled the trigger.
For £405 delivered I think this is a good value daily use laptop, with the added extras of the HD screen and the backlit keyboard for a laptop at this price point.
The thing that delayed me buying was the fact it is quite a job to upgrade the RAM and put an SSD in because you have to take the entire bottom of the laptop off to do it rather than just do it via a removable panel. Stupid design by the HP designers lacking a bit common sense.
Joehawkins609
24 Mar 16#74
The memory would be used as and when it's needed. You'll find most integrated GPUS only use around 1GB under load. my nuc for example only used 128mb as standard until I opted to use more.

Very tempted by this so I went into Curry's to see if they have it. They had the version with the Nvidia GPU.
Pro: The screen is very nice, on that model anyway it is IPS and very vivid.
Con: The Star Wars branding is not subtle, much more prominent than I expected. All surfaces are mid-grey with obvious texturing. Might be fine for some, I'm not sure for me.
Con: That red lettering on the keys is hard to read in daylight.
For another £80 (a lot I know) you can get a Lenovo with i7, 8GB, FHD and AMD R7 360M at John Lewis with 3y warranty, no idea about Lenovos but the build quality didn't feel as nice and it looks like even more trouble to upgrade HD.
Surprised about the red lettering..surely you can see it with the red lighting?
Well haslitt... you not going for it?
haslitt
25 Mar 16#83
I was really not ergonomic, but it's possible the backlight wasn't on - maybe it's controlled by ambient lighting. I'm not going for it anyway, the décor is a bit too prominent, I think it would annoy me eventually. I like the look of the Probook G3's - same i5 CPU so adequate for light gaming, and easy to drop in an SDD I have from my deceased Pavilion. Shame about the screen though, it's a goodie.

Also No backlit keyboard. No FHD, less RAM.
OP's deal is way better than HP 250.
If do not mind non-FHD, go for Probook would be better than HP 250.

According to the HP maintenance manual (see link below) it also has an m2. ssd slot also. So you could keep the mechanical drive for data and move the OS to this.

Hope this helps.

smaller ram slightly, and smaller HDD, but for £200 and such a better quality laptop. a m.2 slot for ssd that can be accessed without dismantling the laptop, and another 4gb Ram if needed for upgrades will see it fly and much cheaper than this deal. :-)
The processor gets a benchmark score of nearly 4000 which seems good but only 6gb RAM is possibly a bit low?
I could really do with a new laptop in the next week or so and I’m really sick of looking!
If you have an old tablet/laptop for trade the Probooks look a good option - but they're standard resolution screens.
Has anyone bought and used it ???
So far, I have only seen over 7 hours battery life in Ultrabooks with FHD screens, and good business laptops with non-FHD screens.
For instance, Probook 455 G3 manual says there is a M.2 slot.
Yes, there is a space, but the M.2 connector is not there.
So you can only be 100% sure, if someone has the exact same model and open the back cover confirm it.
I think why this HP is good is the FHD. I do not know how good is the FHD screen though, do not know if it is TN or IPS neither.
I guessed that it is stated in the details, but I do expect the over 7 hours has some over-statement given the size of laptop and specs.
Hopefully, someone bought it and can confirm.
Either way, it is hot price.
Only trying to get to the bottom if it is good for people who actually need long battery life.

Well haslitt... you not going for it?
Do you like the look of the laptop? Backlit keys look good?
Thanks!
