I think they meant swirl marks rather than "scratches". you would do very well to rub a leather chamois over an entire car and not induce some sort of light swirling in the top layer. Of course if your next step was to polish out or even "hide" the swirls with a glaze before waxing/sealing then the difference is negligible.

If you don't use a clean chamois or actually wash your car properly.... :confused: Otherwise there shouldn't be a difference.
I use a silicone flexi-blade to remove excess water than a chamois to wipe it down after and have never had a problem with scratches, then again I clean/store them correctly.

Do people still use chamois leathers? I thought microfibre or waffle weave drying towels are better/easier to use?

Agree. Awful things practically guaranteed to scratch your car. Microfibre towels are the way to go.
