Have had the Pixel C now for almost two weeks. I was a first unsure about buying it due to the mixed bag of reviews however I'm glad I did. this is is a brilliant bit kit. I have tried and test many tablets. Apple, Android and Windows. I would say this is the best tablet I have ever used. I'm I went with my instinct. I find that I am using the pixel c as my daily driver.

richardcharles1234
19 Apr 16 #256
You do not need to be a developer. You get the exact same DEVICE as a normal consumer ( same hardware and software). Comes with MARSHMALLOW and just update SOFTWARE to latest MARSHMALLOW software. I got my code within a few hours and link send you to Google store and automatically redeems the offer. Was delivered to me last week, and it is great.
richardcharles1234
19 Apr 16 #255
No. You do not need to be a developer. I applied last week and got a code to be applied when I go through order process. It is best to decide whether you want the 32gb for £299 or 64gb for £359( or £369 I can't remember). I bought the 64gb, without code it is I think £479. When you have decided which one then go through process ( I changed from 64gb to 32gb then back to wanting 64gb, and found it difficult to retrieve the code, because once you choose a tablet it says YOU HAVE REDEEMED CODE). It comes with ANDROID MARSHMALLOW and updates to latest MARSHMALLOW FIRMWARE. IT is the exact same DEVICE( HARDWARE and software) you get if you buy it without the developer code. I am extremely pleased with my 64gb PIXEL C. I always buy PURE GOOGLE DEVICES( NEXUS 4, NEXUS 6 , NEXUS 7) AND NOW bought PIXEL C ( INSTEAD of NEXUS 9).

JohnOFarrell
12 Apr 16 #243
Oh ok that would make sense I suppose. With the folio case you just open and close it like normal right? Whereas the other pixel c keyboard comes apart completely and you have to sort of slide it off which I imagine would be a bigger problem.
If it's just the surround touching the screen then that's probably alright!
eglons
12 Apr 16 #242
I hadn't considered that... I've just looked at it and I think the keys are fractionally recessed so the padded keyboard surround is all that's touching the screen... actually less likely marking than a "full touching" case?
JohnOFarrell
12 Apr 16 1 #241
Was put off the keyboard, I don't understand how it closes without potentially scratching the screen etc. Surely closing them together a number of times is going to cause some kind of wear? Just going off some videos I've seen, might be completely wrong!

17 Mar 16 #208
Best type of screen aspect ratio for reading IMHO.
solid
17 Mar 16 #207
The screen ration is designed to take advantage of split-screen, which appears to be imminent in the next Android release. It's going to be a big deal, and will really help with some of the perceived limitations that people have with tablets as productivity devices. Try the screen with two apps running side-by-side - you may come to appreciate why the screen is that shape.

Although, if you only want to watch videos, there are many other tablets that will allow you to do that, on a screen shape you prefer.
peekaboo92
17 Mar 16 #206
I have 16:10 on my galaxy tablet and can say is not all good with that ratio. So much so that Samsung have completely moved away from it in their s2 tablets so I'm not sure this will ever be a feature of the big manufacturers.

It's fine for YouTube which is what most people with tablets will be watching videos on.
robertwilliamsmith
17 Mar 16 #205
The 1:√2 screen aspect ratio puts me off. A tablet that has a screen shaped like a piece of A4 paper is not good for watching video content.

Mind you Apple are stuck in the dark ages with their awful 4:3 screens, so I'm not sure what is worse.

Also I would never buy another Google tablet, especially as my Nexus 10 screen went patchy yellow - Google has refused to acknowledge or help with this. There are many others with the same issue.

16 Mar 16 2 #202
OK, got the return details this morning, so everything should be fine.

As for the device, I really like it.

Good:
- solid build quality (everything seems to be fine apart from the speaker output imbalance) - doesn't flex at all - on par with the iPad, I would say
- (almost insanely) fast, graphics bench mark scores are outstanding
- battery seems to be decent
- photo colours look natural, unlike on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 which tend to over saturate the colours.

Bad:
- right now, this is probably one of the most unstable android device I have used - rebooted by itself a couple of times in the past 24hrs;
- had issue with dropping wifi connection a couple of times
- volume control switch behaves erratically - there's a noticeable delay between pressing volume up/down and the actual voulume going up/down
- (I knew this from the spec but) it is pretty heavy
- (I knew this from spec too) lack of micro SD card slot is a bit annoying, especially when USB 3.1 / C standard isn't widely adopted yet.

Considering you're almost guaranteed a long product support life and latest stock Android availability, I would say the device at the price is a very good buy.

They have my order number, which means if they cared about their customer they would have known that I only got the item this morning.

I gave them my serial number and the customer service guy told me he now has to talk to the warranty team before he can give me the details of how to return the item!?

Sorry but I did expect Google to be more professional and be smarter. This was my first encounter with their customer service and first impression counts.

Also with the sort of tax dodging they do, I did think the device would be delivered by a chauffer driven delivery boy.

I've RMA 3 nexus phones after having them for 3-10 months. They went through a few trouble shooting things before sending me an email to buy a new one and send back the faulty one..
So yes... I'd be pretty annoyed if they done this to me.. especially if I ordered the device 2 days ago and received it a few hours before calling them

This either has to do something with it being a "developer" device, customer service rep is garbage or they have cracked down on RMA requests.

Nice tablet but overpriced given how terrible Android is as a productivity/desktop type OS and the additional cost of the magnetised keyboard. Surface competitor might have been the intention but it doesn't even come close.

If you want a 10" tablet, I'd tempted to take a punt on dual boot Windows/Android tablet such as this (~£135):

It's pretty ok actually, really depends on what you are after, if you are someone that uses a lot of spreadsheets it's not so good, but if you are a word and powerpoint guy its more than fine. There are plenty workarounds for any percieved issues with android on the productivity front, and it's handy I often find myself using it for word and onenote without any issues.

Depends what you want to do. The cpu in that is not very good for anything but basic tasks. Even the 8500 in a x98 pro isn't quite good enough. If they every do a dual boot with something a bit more powerful I will snap one up right away ad apart from that these chinese tablets are surprisingly good. Odd that they don't even specify precisely which CPU is has. That would be enough to stop me from buying. With these sort of generic tablets from the Far East, personally I'd go for something that been tested/reviewed independently and properly over the sales specs. The Teclast has been reviewed by sites such as techtablets.com whereas I can't find anything for the tablet in your link.

Just read a few reviews and articles about the Pixel C, and it's put me off. Sounds very much like a device that wasn't quite ready for the market when it was released, and although a lot of the issues have been fixed since, there's still issues with certain Google apps and it's alleged that the device was never intended to run Android in the first place, instead being planned as a Chrome OS tablet. Makes me wonder how long Google will continue to sell or even support it; they don't exactly have an excellent track record in that department.

Maybe I'll go for the next one.

I don't get that review. The cons don't really have anything to do with the tablet itself. Keyboard is expensive, don't like Android and aren't enough apps. Like rating a windows laptop down because its case is expensive, you don't like Windows 8 and your favourite Mac apps aren't available for it.

Presume if your developing apps your doing it to make money and if your doing this on your Pixel C then it's for business use and as such your purchase will fall outside of the Consumer Rights Act ( as it did with its predicessor the Sale of Goods act). In same was as if a hairdresser and purchase a washing machine to wash your towels, it wouldn't be covered under CRA. The hint is in the title "consumer". Businesses are not classed as consumers

I don't think the whole developer thing should worry anyone. I think this offer is likely due to some big competitor tablet events coming up in the weeks ahead, and a clever way to pass on a discount without losing face. And should they get some developers building more tablet optimised app it's a bonus. Either way it's a win for the consumer!
Picard123

CRA is what I was referring. Late night typo. As long as you're buying from Google, there really isn't much to worry about. If it turns up and doesn't turn on, then send it back and get a refund whether you're a consumer or a business. If it turns up and over the next few weeks / months etc, people realise that the software is a piece of junk, apps don't scale properly, apps randomly close down, the wifi doesn't work properly, the touch screen is laggy and all sorts of other problems, then that's just tough really because that's what the machine is like anyway and people were stupid to buy it in the first place at this price.

I was talking about the CRA (consumer rights act) which replaced the SOGA. Not the CPA. I'm pretty sure there's no coverage for businesses under the CRA, unless it's been amended.

UCTA SMEs do have coverage under, but that doesn't nearly approach consumer protection. Moreover its not the type of protection one would expect to need from the likes of Google or other major retailers. I'd be surprised if many consumers knew about it.

I'll leave it at that, as the point was to inform people for the future. In this case I've already said for 25% discount (plus given to google) its probably worth foregoing your consumer rights.
leelukehope
13 Mar 16 #103
Yeah that's not too bad but that tab is more than capable of running 6 and likely 7. Technically it's only been updated from 4 to 5. I'm not one of those that always needs the latest software but some apps stop getting updated on the older OS'. It's a non issue most of the time but when I spend a lot on a phone or tablet I like it to be supported for 2 major versions at least. Unfortunately this limits me to Nexus' and iPads. Annoying as I do prefer the Xperia tablets to the Nexus!

I love how many people slating this tablet have never actually used it! I've had one since launch and I love it. I've even started to take it places instead of my macbook air as it's a great size vs productivity device. Split screen is all people harp on about. As an 11 inch macbook air owner and not a fan of spaces I just alt tab most things. With office 365 on it there isn't much I can't do. I have also paired an apple magic mouse with it and it works great. Just gutted that as an early adopter I paid a lot more but then it has been worth it. I'm running N on my Nexus 6 and it's really amazing. Seems like M on acid...it seems so much smoother and faster. Weirdly my Pixel C isn't showing as an option to update but having found issues with sky go and a fair few other apps actually glad to keep that on M. Also weirdly after doing a reset on my 6 due to these issues now can't unenroll but not bothered. Some bugs like no detection of my 5Ghz network and the settings keep going back to top of menu but worth it for the pace alone!

There's a lot of confusion going on here. The CPA applies to 'consumers'. SoGA, SSGA etc applied (or applies as the case me be) to both consumers and business though the exclusion and limitation of liability provisions apply differently in that a seller cannot exclude the implied terms under SoGA etc when dealing with consumer. However, it can exclude implied terms when dealing with a business buyer provided the exclusion meets the requirements under UCTA. Typically, the exclusion or limitation of liability clause needs to meet the requirement of reasonableness in the circumstances, otherwise it falls foul of UCTA and would be unenforceable. For example, the pints of milk scenario.

In simple terms, the CPA offers consumers a good deal of protection (as you would expect). Businesses get less (statutory) protection but they're not left without the right of redress either. It simply depends what they're looking to seek redress on, and the particular circumstances of the case.

I don't think SMEs are covered unless they can bring themselves within the typical definition of a consumer. For example a printer purchased to be used by a home worker rather then the office may be covered.

The following blog has some examples and elaborated further.

http://blogs.lexisnexis.co.uk/comet/do-we-need-a-consumer-rights-act-for-smes-or-micro-businesses/

I haven't looked at it recently, so apologies if things have changed. To be honest I find the best thing to do is not give the retailer an excuse, it's hard enough dealing with the likes of Currys when you are a consumer :/

If you run/own an SME buy with your own credit card and expense back where possible. These days theres very little advantage to Business cards as most banks want you to waive limited liability once you get over a few k :/

I thought that businesses, particularly micro and small businesses, were covered by the implied terms under SoGA, SGSA etc and any limitations or exclusions are subject to reasonableness under UCTA?

Otherwise, it wouldn't make sense for example if you were a small business and bought 100 pints of milk only to find that they were all spoilt or contaminated upon arrival. That would fail the requirements of 'satisfactory quality' and 'fit for purpose' under SoGA etc. If the supplier could exclude those obligations under contract, that would simply open the floodgates for con merchants and dodgy suppliers everywhere. That wouldn't make sense and would defeat the purpose of the legislation.

12 Mar 16 #68
It's got nothing to do with the Google Play developer agreement or its terms. What matters is wether telling them you are purchasing as a developer means they will consider it a purchase for other then general consumer use.

Its the terms of sale and the terms of the offer that matter. And even if they don't explicitly mention they would consider it a B2B sale they may well tell you they consider it one if you try to exercise your consumer rights later.

Once you give the indication to a retailer your purchase is not for regular consumer use you take the risk of losing your consumer rights. Ask Currys for a VAT receipt and you'll notice they will ask you if the purchase is for business use.

In this case it's probably worth the risk for the discount. But it's an important point people need to understand. You should avoid giving a retailer any indication a purchase is for use as part of a trade/profession/business/hobby that earns you money/etc.

The discount swayed it.

Buying as a developer means your saying your in trade, if you do this you will get a discount but you will lose your consumer rights under the consumer rights act 2015. Oh and if you later protest that you are a consumer should things go wrong, you have just given google proof you defrauded them, which may severely cost you as its an offence.

I don't think they'll care in all honesty.

They'd probably be shocked you had an interest in the device in the first place, let alone being one of the 5 people that actually bought one of these.

Not saying it's a bad product by any means, but until Android N is released, you're using garbageware.

Great hardware, broke software. Thankfully with Google behind it you know it'll get fixed at some stage. If it were Samsung/LG/Motorola/OnePlus, you'd be stuck relying on buggy custom ROMs from the community.

Mentos
12 Mar 16 2 #63
No, what he is saying is consumer rights are only applicable if you make a purchase as a consumer.

Any B2B (business to business) transaction does not offer the purchaser consumer protection. Only the terms of the purchase contract apply. So if there was a problem with the Dell computers your company bought, you could only seek redress under the terms of the contract of purchase you entered into with Dell.

Whereas if you purchased them yourself as a consumer your consumer rights and the CCA (if you used credit) would supercede the contract of purchase.

Your consumer rights and CCA are almost always far far stronger then B2B terms of purchase. Therefore it's an important point you should be aware of when making purchases which could mean you forego them. For example buying from a trade only retailer like PC World Business or using offers which are for the trade.

(NB: The second bit in his post about fraud is a bit far fetched.)

But those are some of the the poorest quality review sites around. Trusted Review's reviews are almost like an advertising stream for their commercial partners since they were taken over by Time. Their reviews nowadays are so superficial so as to be almost useless. They even have people who review washing machines and lawnmowers reviewing computers. How in depth do you think that's going to be?

Have a look at some proper consumer electronics review sites where the reviewer isn't afraid to be critical of the product eg. Verge, PocketNow, Engadget etc etc.

Nobody is saying that the tablet hardware isn't good. It's the non-optimised software (and keyboard) that's the problem.

I've got my code already.
And I actually do intend on using this as a development tool.

A failed attorney

A developer is anyone who could develop apps. Google haven't locked down the definition in their T&Cs for the simple reason that they want to push Android and increase the potential developer user base. If you look at the Play store, all sorts of people have 'apps' on there, some very useful, many mediocre and some abysmal. I could develop a torch light app for an Android tablet pretty easily. Tap screen and it turns white to act as a torch. Tap it again and it turns black. I'm a 'developer'! The term is very generalised.

The Google Play Developer distribution agreement doesn't say anything about having to have a business. Anyone can pay the registration fee and upload Android apps to the Play Store.

Apart from owning a Nexus 7 from 2012 to 2014 and the Nexus 9 from 2015 to now, nope, never used Android on a tablet

No ARM targeted OS is good for productivity. x86 or bust.
Picard123

£300 is expensive. Throw in another £120 for the cramped magnetised keyboard, and the £400 you've just paid is completely disproportionate to the productivity of the device that you've just bought.

https://store.google.com/product/pixel_c_folio_keyboard

£400 for this and keyboard is really mad.

About as cheap as a £100 pair of socks discounted to £50...

You clearly haven't used Android tablets much (other than perhaps to play Angry Birds). Even in 2016, the number of apps that don't scale properly at higher resolutions is pretty laughable. Android simply isn't a productivity/desktop orientated OS. Great for phones but it simply doesn't scale well.

I think N will improve that aspect a lot with native split screen for multitasking. But then this will undoubtedly be cheaper when N drops.

This is the best Android tablet. You can argue all day whether it's a capable desktop or whether it's as good as an iPad,but if you want the best Android experience, this is it. Great deal. Heat!
