Just look after your lawn and use Verdone Extra, don't let weeds get that big in the first place !

They're not bad for massive weeds as if you position it correctly to begin with, it'll pull out most of the root clump below the soil. However it feels like smaller weeds would just benefit from working with your hands and hand tools rather than leaving a massive hole.
I previously bought one for £8 as they were clearance in Tesco last year, it's well made enough that it's worth it at £11 if you want something to make weeding the garden a bit easier.

The hole would be much bigger if you got them out by hand. Refill and reseed immediately, then the weed and the hole is soon gone.

I think you must be using it incorrectly. The leverage causes the weed to be extracted very easily - see pic.
