19 Things You Didn’t Know Android’s ES File Explorer Can Do (follow link below for the guide to all 19 uses):
"ES File Explorer provides Android phone users a fully-featured file manager that explores phones, PCs, and Macs by leveraging LAN, FTP, and Remote Bluetooth.
It includes all the basic file management functions you’d expect from a file manager, but apart from that it also functions as application manager, cloud storage client (compatible with Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, and more), FTP client, and LAN Samba client. Far from being a free and lightweight mobile app, it’s quite feature rich compared to other file manager apps available on Google play....."

Been using the free version for years but has become increasingly bloated so have been looking at alternatives, can you turn off things like the 'cleaner' tool and the annoying "'x' space decreased analyse now" notification in the PRO version?

8 Mar 163#27
Whole point of the pro version is to cut all the rubbish that ruined the free version, developers right to monitise his app but the way he did it seems to have been more successful in driving users away. From this thread it's obvious a lot of users didn't notice though

Total Commander is a better alternative, ES File Explorer is the file explorer for people that don't know any better as it used to be the only good one on the store. But Total Commander has been on the store for a while now(used to be on sourceforge) and it works fantastically and the classic interface works even better on tablets than it did on windows.

I reverted back to an older apk version when the free app added some pretty heavy handed advertising, including tabs or "windows" that couldn't be closed. I'll give the pro version a try, and see how it compares to v3.2.5.5 which I currently have on my phone and tablet.
It's a great app in general though, with stuff like "Remote Manager" that allows you to access files via a browser on another device, "LAN" to access files/folders on PCs, "FTP" etc.

You are risking your data with the communist in china by using this app. It has been well reported over the years yet people fall prey to these cheap chinese deals.
"The app in question is ES File Explorer, currently boasting some 300 million downloads in its Play Store listing. "
"Little did I know that the app was also transmitting data back to a Chinese server at the same time."
"Unknown Folder “baidu”
This all started with a thread on the Sony Xperia Care Forums that I came across last week. Honestly, the original idea for this post was to warn prospective Sony buyers about potential spyware in the My Xperia app. From that thread:
Read status and identity of your device
Make pictures and videos without your knowledge
Get your exact location
Read the contents of your USB memory
Read or edit accounts
Change security settings
Completely manage your network access
Couple with Bluetooth devices
Know what apps you are using
Prevent your device from entering sleep mode
Change audio settings
Change system settings
All of the above can potentially be monitored and managed remotely via internet WITHOUT YOUR KNOWLEDGE OR PERMISSION!"
"Baidu is the Chinese search giant that’s widely rumoured to have close ties with the PRC government. Hold that thought…"
"Back to Baidu, I had noticed a file in the internal storage of my Nexus 5 called “baidu.cuid”. A bit of searching yielded a thread on XDA with other Nexus owners also in possession of this mystery file. The consensus seems to be that ES File Explorer is to blame. From that thread:"
"Again, I can’t say exactly what is being shared here, but the fact that an app with access to everything on my device and my home network is making a remote connection without my express consent is enough for me to stop using it. Immediately.
If you suspect that there may be spyware on your Android device then OS Monitor is your new best friend."
Perhaps it's doing nothing, but why would it connect to the servers in Beijing? This all could be tin foil hat here but with the amount of spying happening without peoples knowledge, I wouldn't be surprised if this app was doing something fishy. I'm definitely deleting this app now. As the article said OS Monitor can be great for detecting apps that are doing something without your consent.
Like most, been using the free version for years.
Time to give something back. :-)

Article from a few months ago
ES File Explorer – A Short Story of A Fallen King
For many years the top choice was quite obvious. There was one king, or rather emperor, to rule them all: ES File Explorer. Users loved its simplicity, intuitive interface and what is even more for XDA users – root access and ability to open almost any type of file. ES File Explorer is still a complex solution to those of you who want to perform some easy file management or even more complicated stuff like modifying /system partition or adding some stuff to build.prop. If you were using this application for more than a couple of months you may have noticed that something terribly wrong is going on with one of your favorite applications. A company behind the app started to add some unnecessary features, which frankly speaking made it a bloated, resource hungry hog. Yep, you read it well – bloated. We all know what bloat means and how XDA hates it.
bargain always seen people rave about this app started using it didnt realise you can share apks over devices. good for my fire tablet which doesnt let me install some apps off the store

Actually, the best file explorer on Android is Solid Explorer.
"The ES File Explorer is one of the most popular and useful apps on the Play Store. It has received numerous updates the past years and some features were made available recently. We even shared with you tips and tricks on how to properly manage files with the ES File Explorer including hiding files and folders from the untrained eyes, Android's eyes, turning apps into APKs, and transferring files over WiFi in a snap.
The ES File Explorer has always been known for being a reliable productivity app. Users of the app benefit from all the features like the go-to file manager, special tools, built-in web browser, recommended apps, and junk cleaner notifications. However, most of features added can be considered bloatware because they're not really important or useful to the users. And so the developer decided to just release the ES File Explorer Pro sans the bloat. This means unnecessary elements are removed.
A bloatware-free paid app is definitely more useful--making it more attractive to the users. In this case, the free app may appear to have more features but who needs all those? They can be confusing so even a paid and simpler-to-use app is more enticing than ever. The more people attracted to the paid app, the more downloads, and then the more money for the developer.
The premium version didn't just remove the bloat, it now comes with more customization options. Feel free to set default Windows and start page on your phone. Instead of the usual directory, you can set a special homepage according to your preferences."

Since ES explorer turned to crap (apparently bought out by another company) and full of 'your phone seems slow, we'll delete things for you, scan now!) bloatcrap, i've switched to 'solid explorer'. Seems extremely good and pretty similar to ES!

Shame selecting the settings option in remote manager crashes as it does with the free version. Anybody else have this issue? It started on the free version a few months ago and I just checked it is the same with this pro. The settings option is good to set a password for the remote manager. On the free version I can no longer change my password and with the pro version I can't set one.

Hi
the problem with the SDK that this app was made using (produced by Baidu)
is not so much that it is feeding data to china (although they have a great privacy and human rights history I know /s and of course can be compared directly with google /s )
but that any data "leaking" via the security holes is not encrypted and is available to anyone who intercepts it.
it like sending a letter to someone in a see through envelope - anyone who handles the letter can read the contents not just the person you send it to.
no if this extends to leaking your usernames and password for other apps
maybe you'd worry more about it?

It's a great app in general though, with stuff like "Remote Manager" that allows you to access files via a browser on another device, "LAN" to access files/folders on PCs, "FTP" etc.
what's your point?
http://androidforums.com/threads/es-file-explorer-alternatives.975632/
https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/338228-es-file-explorer-spyware/

Never been a fan of ES, way to bloated for me. Add in the XDA stuff above and it makes it a nono.
Yet, still bought it for 10p...Damn it...
I could spend half my life researching and worrying about every app I installed but I'd probably have about 2 apps on my phone and no time to do anything else!
mike
Is the PRO version better?
I bought it a couple of weeks ago for 2£ when I first realised it exists for the same reason many here are paying 10p and I don't regret it. I used it for years and it has never let me down so that is worth 2£ for me.
Thank You
I've also been using the free version for years. It's a good time to upgrade.:sunglasses:
maybe a new version is coming.... ?
Pretty poor show to give your paying customers less.
Also if you use this with es task killer it will think you don't have es file explorer installed.
Lol, +1 to that, that always tickles me. Don't people know that there are no such things on the app store!?
Unfortunately giffgaff don't support direct carrier billing (O2 does) so I can't use my giffgaff credit to pay for apps.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/30rg0e/can_we_have_a_talk_about_es_file_explorer/
Don't think cause it's pro, that it's better than the free version. It has less features, gets updated less and is overall a worse product. I bought it, found it didn't have any of the analyst functions and went back to free.
As for the bad press.. I'm not going to let that worry me too much.
