You need to visit regularly, they had 10% last week too.

I bought one:

512gb nvme (they are the slower pm951 NOT sm951).
16gb ddr4.
4K touchscreen, this screen is amazing (100% Adobe).
3 years NBD warranty.
Win 10 pro.
84 W battery.

£1277.00

The laptop is pristine, no scratches or marks.

The only difference between this and new is that you don't get the fancy black box and the paperwork is photocopied.

Won't they wait for the new model though? the new XPS 15 has only been out for a few months really.

For previous models have they updated the CPU mid production?

Wondering whether to wait now.

Or even get Precision 5510, as arguably being able to use an eGPU means the lower graphics performance doesn't matter so much.

Mine has arrived, it came in a branded box, not an XPS box, all that was in the box was laptop, PSU and cable. the laptop looks perfect. it's superb, very fast and will be faster when the Samsung 950 arrives and I get rid of the 32G SSD. Well worth £1000.00. That's about 40% dol.

I wish I had book marked the specific post, it was either in the Reddit Dell forum or the Dell Notebook Review forum that I found the thread.

Someone claiming to be a Dell Engineer made the comment about them generally being new QC failures while many of the posters commented that the damage was minimal.

Unlike them, I am very fussy about my gadgets so a scratch would drive me mad, that is the only reason I buy Certified.

Not from my experience and I've handled a lot of them. Most would appear to have been used as the marks look like a combination of accidents and wear and tear.

9 Mar 16 #67
Well done.

I have two refurbished laptops from Dell, both arrived perfect and are still running perfectly.

I have read on a number of forums that the "scratch and dent" ones are usually new.

They are typically ones that were lightly damaged in production and therefore failed QC on cosmetic issues, whereas mine "certified reconditioned" can be returned repaired machines.

Some have also said that they have purchased scratch and dent with virtually no damage, just scratches to the casing.
dwain
9 Mar 16 #66
I can assure you that's a good price (XPS 13 9530), however you will need to check the dents etc. I know my TAG number and checked, Dell have either wiped the history or it's never left the factory, my belief is the latter. All deliveries come from Syncreon in the Netherlands,

Don't worry, I believe Dell air on the side of caution.

My XPS arrived 9 days before the estimated day, and yes, I was told that they are shipped from Europe.

Dell does not ship by air, so I guess they are covering themselves for possible hold ups in land shipment.

A bit of info for those who have purchased an XPS.

I read on forums that people were having problems recovering their systems so I spoke with Dell. Dell has confirmed that there is a problem with the factory image and that they are working on patching and releasing a new factory image.

For now, Dell are advising that if your system gets corrupted you will need to do a clean install of Windows 10 and then manually install all of your drivers from the Dell support site.

I advise you to make a disk image of the system, if you make a clean image you can avoid this.

Thankfully I made two images from a fresh machine, one with Terabyte and the other with Macrium.

I know the deal has ended, however I thought I would share something. I now have my TAG number and will get one of them to check out my order on Monday.

No it is the drive, it is rated at 560MB/sec write speed, the SATA 850 pro SSD is rated at 520MB/sec, so it is not much faster.

If you upgrade to the 950 pro then the maximum rating is Up to 2,500 MB/sec.

The PM951 is fast enough for my needs, later when the 950 pro reduces in price I may upgrade, at the moment it is £245.00.

Yes my laptop is fully updated, I have also installed Dell Command Update, it scans your hardware and software and then reports and installs updated drivers.

You should be fine, my Venue was a refurb and it still looks new.

Mine came to £1,277.00 as I chose to add 3 years NBD support, I will be happy if it lasts me 3 years.

It works out at £1.17 per day, I can't get a coffee for that.

Did you get NVME and 4K, as that is a good price?
moneyforme
3 Mar 16 #54
I have not tested the speed but for my use it seems fine, however I have not installed all of my software yet.

The 128GB is the slowest, they get faster with size. Samsung have rated my 512Gb PM951 as:

Model PM951
Interface PCI Express Gen3 x4
Form Factor M.2
Capacity 512GB
Sequential Read Up to 1,050MB/s
Sequential Write Up to 560MB/s
Random Read Up to 250K IOPS

People generally do not think high of Toshiba. People who bought the Toshiba Radius or who went to store to see it are normally surprise with how high quality they are.

If you are in doubt of Radius, I suggest you go to Currys/PC World have a test. They should have both FHD and 4k screen version available.

The inspiron 15 7559-8045 is about the best value for money in a laptop at any price point at the minute. It's only good up to "eh, turn some settings down a bit" gaming rather than everything with all eye candy on show but for the price (£694 + whatever this discount is worth) it's a hell of a lot of laptop. I ended up getting one to upgrade the wifes laptop, cracking machine.

Edit: ~£650 for an I7 with a 960M... :o

Anyone know of an XPS 15 alternative e.g.
Quad core
slim
dedicated graphics
does not look like a paving slab

The xps are quite steeply priced but not sure there are any better / cheaper alternatives without sacrificing one or more of these.
plewis00 to mallie21
2 Mar 16 #24
Really only alternatives are the retina MBP (someone had to say it) or something like the Razer Blade. I'd choose the XPS 15 9550 though, as I did - it's a stunning piece of engineering and performance hardware.

If can do with 12 inch screen, TOSHIBA Satellite Radius is a very good Ultrabook at almost half of XPS price.

i7-6500u, 256GB M.2 SSD, FHD at £600. 4k at £700 brand new. Its screen and overall quality are very good.

Last week, Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon FHD was on sell for £560 was a really good deal. 14 inch screen. The screen is TN only, you can buy IPS screen for £50 and replace yourself.

None of them are quad though.

I had a top-spec i7 XPS13 and it was a terrible piece of kit for the money. Slow running spreadsheets, PowerPoint and photoshop. And terribly laggy/unusable when connected up with a second monitor.

The screen was gorgeous, but the lack of performance for the money meant that it had to go back. Just not up to par for the £1100-1200 that it costs. If you're considering buying one then make sure you can return it just in case
bytemaster to alexc100

I too have an i7 XPS 13 and although I don't do any graphics work I do run some large spreadsheets and a lot of MS Access. I think the performance is outstanding for such a small laptop. I have experienced problems after updates when it seems that the power settings get replaced with very conservative settings. Even browser use was absolutely crawling, Task Manager showed that the processor wasn't going above about 800MHz. A quick few tweaks and it was back to performing as it should. I can't imagine any other laptop offering better performance in such a small package.

I also use it with a USB, FHD monitor when travllin and have not observed any problems, other than that the USB monitor has a a poor display panel.

Its not a powerhouse, but it is tiny.

Yes the screen is gorgeous.

The Blade is marketed as a gaming machine so it should have dedicated graphics (depends on the model). The MacBook Pro can run Windows comfortably though, if it were a real consideration.
