Why would you spend well over £100 extra on carts to preserve the warranty on a £99 printer?

For a bargain forum, we seem to have a serious lack of grasp on value ;0

Like most printers it's not only the price of the printer . you need factor in the cost of the cartridges or in this case the cost of the toner. It's false economy to buy a cheap printer then pay twice the cartridge cost than a slightly more expensive printer. In this case the toner cost (Dell 853-1101 toner 4 colours ) is £190 ( 3p per page)or £57 (9p per page)for compatability toner cartridges. No doubt the quality will be better than a cheaper printer but is it worth the extra cost?

Compatibles for this can be purchased for around £20.00. Black with a 2000 yield and the colours with 1400.

Review here

Not great when its a darn sight cheaper to buy a whole new device than a full set of carts. I appreciate that's using Dell's own refills but at least you know they will work and wont affect your warranty at all.

Also not that fast to print either....

Think Ill stick with my injket MFP for now...

I have the scanner version of this. Ive been using cheap toners for nearly 2 years and everythings ok but on the right hand side of the printout the ink comes off. Ive increased the timing which improved it greatly, but its still doing it a bit.

I use these http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00977H8DY?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_sfl_title_4&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE not sure if they are better or worse than yours but they last and I am happy with them. £17.40 for the full set.

Pretty good printer, it's usually this price though isn't it?

Also, in hindsight I wish I had got an all in one inkjet. They do better photos too, laser printers are not good for photos.

Hi, not sure, I just picked a random link to show the price. Can't remember which one we use. We have a couple of these in one of the offices and only got it because the toners were cheap. Pretty slow, but has been printing around 50 or 60 sheets every day for the last year or so.

Was in the US a couple of weeks back and I'm sure we paid around $70 for the printer from Staples, so £100 does seem steep compared to that, but nevertheless it's a great little printer.

I had a nightmare trying to connect this printer to my wireless network but as a last resort I changed the Wi-Fi channel of my router and it worked! For me at least, it seems very sensitive about which channel it's on. It's a 1 minute job to change channels (if you know how to access router settings) so definitely worth a try. You can use smart phone apps like Wifi Analyzer to see which is a good, uncongested channel to use. There's info on this page - http://www.howtogeek.com/197268/how-to-find-the-best-wi-fi-channel-for-your-router-on-any-operating-system/

Great printer, got last time was on here, highly recommended. If you use inkjet every week, fine, but if not end up spending so much more on cartridges than the things are worth. They dry up and clog up sop terry useless. Never again, got 3 now that don't work. This one works without fail wirelessly and quickly too. Hp, & canon inkjets i had took literally minutes to print via wifit. Anyway, heat added. Now just need a cheap decent scanner that works with macs, any recommendations? Cheers.

And printer pro iOS app works too, s can print from idevices which is useful too.

I use a Canoscan Lide 210 scanner with my Macs which works well - only issue is with El Capitan the driver doesn't currently support the front panel buttons - have to use the Mac app to scan/copy etc. so reverted to Yosemite. The more recent Lide 220 model does work fine with El Capitan.

Wouldn't recommend this if you need high quality prints especially colour. It gets the job done but the resolution on this isn't great for images with lots of detail in them like graphs charts etc. I have a similar dell laser with the same resolution and colour prints look stretched and blocky and the colours just aren't very accurate. But for black and white text it's perfect. Purchased a dedicated Inkjet for when I need high quality prints and the laser for when quality doesn't matter.

This is about as cheap as this printer gets (it occasionally floats up by as much as £20).
It is a bargain.
You can get better photo printing with an inkjet, but this actually ain't bad. If you want to do photos really well, you'll have to put up with the fuss of an inkjet.
This is great for 'business' graphic use, and no fuss whatsoever.

The printer can do duplex (you have to turn the paper over and put it in again). The important thing here is that when it goes through the second time, the first side's printing doesn't come off or get damaged ... if is spec'd to do duplex, just not automatically.

I've not had any troubles with wifi.
The paper tray is shallow (250 sheets) and A4 sticks out at the front.
Despite the lack of a rear-exit "straight through" paper route option, it does actually print laser labels very nicely.
It is a 'dumb' printer, so print speed can depend on your computer and connection to the printer (wired can be faster than wireless!)

The (cheap if 'compatible') toners seem to be absolutely the ONLY consumable - which is pretty unusual for a colour laser.

I'm very pleased with mine, and would recommend as a general home colour printer.

Bought one of these a year or so ago, and it's a fantastic little thing. The original toner cartridges lasted about a year with regular printing of university work. Replacement toner was about £20 on eBay. I don't use the wireless feature, but for a reliable colour laser printer with cheap toner, it's excellent value for money. Would certainly buy another.

To be honest, I can't remember but I think that I did it online. Just checked back on all the emails and can't see anything so I would assume that it was just done online. I have just received my printer and will probably need to do the same thing.

Amazingly, I saw that I paid £125 for an open box C1350NW in 2011 (the one that I am replacing).

what the hell you do not need warranty above the usual mine been going over 3 years without problems .What is there to break down LED printing not true laser drums etc.?
wpj
11 Mar 16 #82
It's not; it's that the standard 1 year warranty starts when Dell ships to the seller. This then has to be changed by the purchaser, otherwise you can lose a few months depending how long that they have had it in stock. Strange, yes, but that is Dell.

I have had an older version 4 years, and that has now been replaced with this one. I have had one of these at home for almost 3 years without any problems.

I received the printer from Ebuyer on 10th March but the Dell warranty is shown as expiring on 24th January 2017. I used the Dell online chat to see how to reinstate it to the full 12 months and received the following response: "You have purchased from a reseller so the warranty will start from the date he purchased from Dell".
Not worth the trouble pursuing further - it was hard enough to get the agent to understand the initial question!
wpj
14 Mar 16 #85
Yes, I had no problem last time, but this time they want to sell me an extended warranty. As you say, it's not worth it for a few weeks and my home version of this printer has been going for over two and a half years.
Sqsq
14 Mar 16 #86
I had a similar response from Dell. However we entered into a sales contract with the seller, therefore the 1 year warranty (from date of delivery) is with Scan (the retailer), not Dell (the manufacturer). Consumer Rights Act 2015 or a readable summary here.

We also have up to six years to complain to Scan should the printer become faulty. But don't expect much.

Great deal we have had a 1250c for years and printed the life out of the thing, always got cheap cartridges from Ebay and never had any major problems, it's starting to show it's age now, so looking for a replacement, I actually had to clean a sensor  thinking of getting this as it takes the same cartridges!
Had a look at the C2660 which is only £10 more the cartridges are more expensive, it's bigger & heavy and it looses wireless&mobile printing but the cartridges do hold a lot more 1200 pages compared to 700 on the C1760, and although it's meant for Office use, my 2 Uni kids are printing book like no of pages all the time. If anyone has any feedback on either be nice to know. I'll probably opt for the C1760 because of the same cartridges but interesting alternative, if you have the space.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned but it looks like 6% cashback via Quidco too.

Over the midterm we printed on 200gsm paper/card for the kid's crafts play. It worked very nicely. The paper came out curled but was easily straightened pulling the unprinted side once over the edge of a ruler. We printed about 45 sheets and they were perfect.

Paper Type must be set to "Covers (106-163g/m2)".

We tried 120gsm but the toner came out flaky.
