I've been looking at this sewing machine for a while. The cheapest I've found so far is £69. I checked again on amazon this morning and it's now £64.99. its got a good reviews as well. Perfect for a newbie like me
Hold the thread that's under the needle and this machine specs plastic bobbins instead of metal ones as metal may damage the machine & void the warranty.

You use bobbins to contain the lower thread & then it goes in the machine.
You need one bobbin for each colour thread, and you can get bobbin cases off eBay for £1.50ish (from China, takes a fortnight or so to arrive).
I find my brother sewing machine will only accept genuine bobbins, not the generic ones, which is a shame as they're so much more expensive!
Tip: don't buy really cheap thread, from experience I've found that it snaps and the bobbin thread tension goes awry.

Same machine £69.99 in Argos at moment - they are great if anything goes wrong and you have to take it back!

Saw this yesterday and ordered for Mothers day for the wife, she's always fancied a sewing machine and my latest TCB just cleared so cashed out as amazon voucher & cost me NOTHING
Anyway don't forget to order PLASTIC bobbins for it AND spare needles too all can be had cheaply on amazon
