Well I bought this yesterday at an amazing £149 from Aldis new Edinburgh store
So far??not impressed
The setting up takes a while to work out and then once I plugged the Ariel in it seems to simply want to do what I call the digital chicken dance as in that horrible screeching sound whilst caught in between channels ,,,strangely the Ariel works with my toshiba that's 3 years old bought from John Lewis ,
Ok I thought maybe it's me and this is an upto date making new telly and I need to change to an even more expensive Ariel,,,,
Is I try a different Ariel still no go?????? (Both Ariels work in my to toshiba)
So eventually after moving Ariel and to around the only channels I get to work are bbc 1 2 and stv (Scottish television and partner itv) but only the hd.channnels ???
It eventually works on the normal channel 3 (Stv, )but as mentioned above it was football and it looks terrible though the football looked fine when watched on the stv,hd, channel
So if that wasn't bad enough after an hour when I had to manoeuvre the Ariel again the screen went blank?????? With sound still going
Left overnight and still blank next day.so unless I'm having a thick moment I wasn't aware of a function to listen only??????
Even if there is I would say save your money and pay a wee bit more
I wanted to like it but ce la vie it was worth a punt
Back to aldi tomorrow.

Bought it, very good value for money. But sound is terrible, you will need to buy a soundbar. Picture quality is OK, nothing like a Panasonic or Toshiba or Samsung though, but for £199 and all its features and 3 year guarantee, its good.

If your very picky, this TV will not be for you. Does not seem to be selling quickly in the Aldi store I go to, has been on sale now for 3 weeks and more and still not sold out.

This 4th attempt however has been fine. Works beautifully. 4th time lucky. For £200 you can't complain.
On taking the others back, the lovely, helpful Polish girl that served me, told me she had to take her own back, and she said another feller had dead pixels in the centre of his screen - AFTER wall mounting it. As I said - the quality control checking seemed non-existent in the Chinese factory concerned
PhilK
13 Apr 16 #67
Maybe Ive been unlucky, but currently using my FOURTH of these TVs from Aldi - 2 with dead pixels, one with dud receiver in telly, meaning the remote wouldn't work. It seems to be OK at the fourth attempt, and its OK for a bedroom but the quality control is atrocious on these
meggie_dude to PhilK
15 Apr 16 #68
I therefore think I have been lucky. I am still on the original set, and based on your update I don't think I'll go for a replacment.
As a TV, as you say its OK for a bedroom, which is where we have it - wall mounted in spare bedroom.
I've not had any receiver issues, or dead pixels, but I do have the occasional lock-up of remote, (or the connection from the remote to the TV). Very occasionally the TV will get confused and turn itself off. The Smart functions are a) limited in content, b) unusable, because the network response is so bad as to make them unusable - even on a hardwired LAN connection.
The recording ability (not correctly listed on the spec btw) is also frustrating as it cuts out/blanks every few seconds. I have phoned Tempo the Australian support company (via the Uk freephone line) responsible for these TV's and they are unable to confirm an exact spec of Pen drive required other than it should be USB2.0 upwards and FAT32 formated, I have already tried a couple of pen drives with the same result.
So all in all - all I can judge this is as, is a basic 40" TV at £199, and ignore the smart and recording addons, as they are unusable
For that - its OK'ish. Picture quality is OK, not great, Blocky HD reception, Decent enough blacks for the price.
Sound quality is poor (hence I got a cheap 2.1 channel sounbar)
Don't buy it for your main TV and expect a bargain - because it isn't.

11 Apr 16 #65
My Mum bought one of these so i set it up for her.
Fine as a £200 TV, plenty of HDMI ports etc but no SCART Socket.
The Smart features are awful. Slow unresponsive Web browser, Facebook, youtube, picsa, twitter and some Spanish video app which you cant change the language of. No catch up players and no way to accquire them.
meggie_dude to tr0r
11 Apr 16 #66
Yes, I agree with all you say. I gave up on a wireless connection, and went wired (via a powerline connector) . Just as bad. Hopeless in fact.
I phoned the service desk to see if this would have a firmware upgrade to address glitches with recordings and to see if any future apps were likely, and they said they are trying to get Netflix certification (you need to be registered for rolling out a Netflix app apparently). So you get what you have + maybe at some point Netflix. If Netflix works as well as the current apps - there is no point.
Having said that it works fine as a 200 quid TV with sound improved via a 34 quid 2.1 (internal subwoofer) soundbar from Tesco, its fine. 3yr warranty was the reason I pulled the trigger vs any other cheap set.
meggie_dude
5 Apr 16 #63
So my findings: Mixed bag I would say:

1) Picture Quality - For a cheap panel the quality of the HD image is I would say "OK", not great, but not bad - for the price
2) Sound quality - a bit rubbish, but again to be expected at this price
3) Smart elements - Remote comes with Querty keyboard on Reverse.. It comes with a few basic apps like YouTube, Facebook, Web browser, etc. not really used much as the wifi from the spare room is not great - will test further.
TBH I am unlikely to use this much as there does not seem to be a virtual mouse option its all very last century, cursor up/down/left/right and any tablet or laptop would walk all over it. This is probably the same for a lot of so called "Smart TV's I guess.
4) PVR - surprisingly this is not just Pause Live action as advertised - it has a basic record facility from the guide. I tried it, and while the quality of the recording is excellent - on the BBC1 HD recordings I attempted it drops out every 20-30sec for a fraction of a second. Annoying, The USB pen drive I've used is a good spec USB3.0 unit, so recording read and write speeds should be fine.
5) Stand/wall mount. Comes with stand - which is not a surprise, but was not advertised. No wallmount - but standard VESA mounting points
6) General issues - I've had 2 lockups requiring reboots, and 1 instance of the remote becoming unresponsive..
At this point I'm not sending back, based on these issues - but time will tell.

Any other feedback appreciated.

Does anyone know if it has a stand and if so what does it look like?
meggie_dude to donshort
26 Mar 16 #59
This morning I rang up customer services who said from the info they had to hand a stand wasn't listed (this I find surprising as I don't know of any other TV this size that is sold without a stand, plus the online description doesn't say that is not included, which would be the norm)..
They also don't know what the VESA mount size is, or if the package includes a wall mount.
Having said that this was online customer services and not the dept in charge of more indepth product questions. They gave me that departments number (0800 328 6063) but they won't be open until Tuesday 29th - after the Easter Holiday
meggie_dude
26 Mar 16 #57
BTW, sorry for those looking to buy online. I may have just ordered the last one - soz.
meggie_dude
26 Mar 16 #56
Huh?? Probably won't pause Live TV?? - that's what it says it does
What it probably doesn't do is schedule recordings.
I know VESA is a standard, what is a tad frustrating is they don't quote the size. If it doesn't come with a stand (as others have had confirmed via Aldi Cust Services), then what the VESA size is, 100x100? 200x200? 400x400?
Affects what you have to purchase afterwards and how quick you can use the TV. I already have an old VESA mount, but it may not fit this TV.
meggie_dude
25 Mar 16 #54
Am I right in assuming the "PVR Record function allows you to pause live TV and continue to view later" relies on the USB port to write the paused TV to a pendrive/ext-drive? Anyone know?
Its a pity this is not a full PVR facility (recording of scheduled programs)

Also the spec "Wall mount VESA" - Anyone who has ordered these Bauhn's before - does this mean it comes with a VESA wall mount already - or do need to buy one?

Cheers
brookysm to meggie_dude
25 Mar 16 #55
Probably won't pause live TV but yes you will need a usb stick/hard drive. VESA is a standard for fitting, the problem is there's various different sizes. It will come with either legs or a stand, it won't have a wall mount in the box.
PG21
25 Mar 16 #53
Does this TV have a stand or is it wall mountable only?
brookysm
25 Mar 16 #52
Fair play, but you'll be waiting a long time to see a 4k Sony hitting a £300 price point.

I've a 2 year old high end 4k LG in the living room, the Bauhn doesn't come close to the blacks that does (tho the halo effect the LG like most quality LED sets do is annoying) the bright picture is not that far away from a set 18 months ago from it was £1000 more!
brookysm
24 Mar 16 #36
Most TVs at this price point by 'Brands' come out of Vestels Turkish factory, Bauhn's don't. Have the 48" 4k set they sold in November in the bedroom and for the money I'm very impressed with it, blacks aren't brilliant at night but the overall picture is very good once you set it up correctly.
Elevation to brookysm
24 Mar 16 #51
This isn't exactly a glowing review but good on you for taking a chance with this brand I say. I'm still much happier paying about £400 more for the inky blacks of a Sony that I've barely had to bother altering the picture settings for out the box the 2 years so far I've had it.
Elevation
24 Mar 16 2 #30
You lost me at "Bauhn". Is that some b-stard son of Braun and Blaupunkt?

24 Mar 16 #47
Good luck with that. :stuck_out_tongue: Of course a 'standard' 3 year warranty is better than a 'standard' 12 month warranty and anyone arguing otherwise must have a hidden agenda. The Aldi TV goes kaput after 2 years, 11 months and 29 days it will be repaired/replaced under its warranty. The Panny/Vestel goes wrong after 12months and 1 day and the fight would have to begin. Seriously, this isn't exactly rocket science...

24 Mar 16 #46
12m warranty doesnt mean anything..its has to be sold fit for purpose. You can claim up to 6 years for a faulty TV whatever they try and blag you
LittleChimp
24 Mar 16 #45
Really confused why this is getting slated. It's got 3 years warranty which you can't compare with 12 months on others and aldi have no fuss return anyway. If it's crap take it back, if it's good then keep it, simple!

tbh, im not a snob when it comes to TV's re badges. I know not to expect from a £150 tv what I'd get for a £1000 tv. so the depthness of colours etc is lost on me. so long as theres no massive motion blurs when watching fast paced action, I can accept a budget tv. and with the chromecast, smart option is not a deal breaker for me. I actually wouldn't want smart features as the CC would do the jobs I'd need anyway. anything else extra is just bells and whistles.

appreciated for some of the links in the thread for alternatives. will look into it.

The first one is a Turkish-made Vestel with a 'decent' brand name badge stuck on it. And a 12 month warranty. That doesn't constitute a 'decent brand TV' in my book. It's a 'decent brand badge' with a non-decent brand TV at the back of it. Next!

And the second one is 65% more expensive than the Bauhn, not 65 quid :stuck_out_tongue: And, again, with a 12 month warranty.
