It's good for what it is, Dont expect it to replace a "proper" laptop, it does everything a proper laptop would do, (full windows 10, fast enough to run most apps and i even managed to play some dota 2 on it!) so even though it can do what a proper laptop can its the size and keyboard that make it less usable, The keyboard is very small so expect to be hitting the wrong keys all the time, the touchpad is ok but jittery when scrolling etc. The screen is acceptable but the size makes it hard to use for long periods, its top heavy when docked to the keyboard so will tipple over if its on your knee (it does stand up when on a flat surface though) I find the biggest issue i'm having is the windows operating system though, i really hate how awkward it is.
All that said though my main laptop is a macbook pro so i'm coming from something of exceptional quality and usability so my views on the negatives may be overblown and it does have many possitives. Its fast for a small **** and runs everything i've thrown at it (even some less intensive games), the battery is pretty good, it has two full size usb ports on the keyboard, very portable, Unlike some hybrid devices its has a real hinge when docked not just a keyboard cover with a flap for a stand so it is undistinguishable from a "proper" laptop when docked.
overall i'm very happy with it, for the price its an excellent piece of kit as a secondary machine (browsing in bed, netflixing, bits of office work etc)

I had my tablet delivered yesterday and the sound is very low. I've done some reading around and people have mentioned that installing the Viper4Windows audio driver improves the sound a lot. Seems like a software problem rather than a hardware problem with the actual speaker. I haven't installed the driver yet but will report back once I have.

Of course you do, I have a dedicated use method, best tool for the job, one for testing and prototyping software before actual use, one for each OS (Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 and :sunglasses: so am waiting for a Win 10, one for going out for its portability, one for travel abroad with long battery stamina (Asus Transformer T100TA), one for low energy consumption, M-5Y71, and one for performance i7-quad core. Look at it this another way, a man needs a set of spanners to do a decent job, it is either an adjustable spanner, one size fits all, or a set of spanners. Laptops/tablets could be similarly used by man and woman as for "a set of spanners".

Although the idea of these devices is quite appealing, the implementation leaves a lot to be desired. HD resolution is fine for a laptop, but not for a tablet. 2GB of RAM is tight, as is 32GB of flash (which is also quite slow). The connection of the keyboard is a bit flaky, and battery life is substandard.

On the plus side, you do get a full Windows laptop and a Windows tablet for very little money.

PS: If anybody can figure out how to run Android on this, that would be great. Remix OS should work, but I could not get it to boot.

had this a while it's excellent you can get about 5 hours typical use with the keyboard attached or 8 ish hours with the keyboard detached. it upgrades to Windows 10 very easily. the sound is quiet but passable, headphone sound is completely fin never had a problem. the storage is low yes but it's fine for office use and a few games etc adding an micro sd card solves space issues. all in all I use it as my main laptop now excellent machine.

The only niggle I have with mine, is the fixed position when the screen is attached to the keyboard, under most normal circumstances, sitting at a desk, or on your lap when seated it works great, but if you want to lay down in bed and watch it or place it on your body when laid down, the fixed screen position just does not work.
Scotta965 to Just Wondering

maybe i'm wrong here but the screen can be folded on top of the screen so it isn't fixed therefore can be rotated.

TAKE NOTE
The Sale of Goods Act has been replaced by the Consumer Rights Act. This came into force on 1 October 2015.
The Consumer Rights Act has made some changes to your rights to return faulty goods and get a refund, replacement or repair.
In addition, the Consumer Rights Act now gives you completely new rights when you buy digital content.

The Sale of Goods Act no longer applies in UK law. This has been replaced by the Consumer Rights Act and gives you rights to a refund, repair or replacement if something you buy develops a fault.

(Yes i know what your saying is still true as that is also in the Consumer Rights Act but since the Sales of Goods Act no longer exists it's pointless to mention that)

I picked this up when PC World had the same offer on. It's pretty good for the price. Obviously it's not exactly the quickest and it's certainly not a replacement for a full blown PC or laptop. But if you're wanting something for browsing the internet, watching YouTube, etc and playing older games it's fine. Plus you have the advantage of being able to detach the screen.

Plays the likes of Football Manager 2012 without any issues and at a decent enough speed. You can play Football Manager 2016 too, but you'd have to have a lot of patience as it's not exactly quick. Things like Super Meat Boy, FTL, Plague, Game Dev Story, etc all work great. You can even play Half Life 2 with the settings turned down.

The keyboard has two full USB ports on it, which is really handy. I've got a mouse and a Xbox360 pad plugged into mine.

Also, for browsing, it works far faster using the built in Edge browser rather than using Chrome. Chrome can be a bit of a memory hog at times and given you've only got 2gb to play with then you can see why Chrome tends to go quite slow. Stick to using Edge though and it's completely fine.

I got one of these a couple of weeks ago when they were £130 and even then I thought you got a lot for your money. As has been said, don't expect Kray supercomputer speed but it's handled all the basic tasks I've thrown at it so far. Browsing, email, bit of office work etc all fine. Detachable touchscreen is great, proper hinge so you can actually use it on your lap (unlike the Miix3 or Linx variations). Battery life is great. Something else not mentioned is that it comes with Office Mobile which is actually pretty good and handled everything I've thrown at it when I've been doing some work on it. Everyone I've shown mine to so far wants one! (Typing this on it now from my hotel)

Does Kodi not stress it too much?
What you've put is brilliant and the kodi question is for me, but I want to get it for my dad because he has an original ipad (which he hates, obviously as it's so slow) so I can't get him anything that lags noticeably or will be laggy in a year or two (he only uses youtube/email/facebook/browser).
Do you feel the build of it does enough to not be laggy in any way that is noticeable?

9 Mar 16 1 #31
There's much worse out there running Kodi just fine (Raspberry Pi for example). Playback will use hardware acceleration, which will be fine for H.264 1920x1080 videos. The CPU might handle low bitrate H.265
I'd imagine the interface would be smooth too on the eMMC storage... Kodi isn't very intensive in general.
MrPuddington
9 Mar 16 #33
Actually I find this tough for browsing. With Chrome, it quickly runs out of RAM once you have few tabs open. On Edge, RAM use is much lower, but it feels sluggish. Maybe a light weight browser would be better (Opera?, Firefox?).

Word 2010 is ok, but Word 2016 is again quite sluggish. So even for light use it can be limiting.

I ordered this last week from JL when it was in stock - then got an email saying it was out of stock. So paid an extra £10 from Amazon without the warranty - annoying.

Anyway enough moaning - it does exactly what I want and well worth the money. Pretty quick, boots up fast. I browse the Web and watch the odd video - it's so handy doing a bit of typing and a bit of touchscreen.

Well worth the money - and if it breaks in 2 years - it's still money well spent.

(sound is shocking - but really good through headphones).

I found when I had a Windows tablet that I missed having a physical keyboard all the time so I was tempted by one of these but when I looked at it in John Lewis I thought it was quite chunky and heavy for it's size. Now I'm looking at small, portable laptops instead or maybe a more expensive convertible. I'm looking for something like the Asus X205 (11", 1kg, good battery) but with better screen and better cpu. Does anything like that exist for around £300?

I have been using a Miix 3 (same I think except that the 3 has a full HD screen) for several months now. Windows 10. I use it as a work laptop when I am traveling (flying) and replicate my normal 'full size' laptop on it. I use office 365, exchange mail, VPN, Skype, Trueview (Autodesk .dwg viewer), watch HD videos in my 'spare' time. HDMI out for presentations. MicroSD card for storage.
Can highly recommend it. Trueview takes a few seconds to load up, but works fine.
It is not a games machine, and there can be a little lag if several apps are open. The keyboard is, as you might expect, small and there are keys missing compared with a full size (more annoyingly, the number keys are shifted one across to the right from where they normally sit!), but I'm more than happy to put up with those minor 'issues'. After all, I wanted a small, portable, lightweight device with an attached keyboard, that would run full Win 10, had a good screen and didn't cost the earth. I thought this might do it..and it certainly has.
It's great value for money, good build quality, and very capable. Great price!
stinkybeard
9 Mar 16 #73
If it was possible to put linux on it I'd be all over this. But seems that there are some 'issues' yet to resolve with wlan and a few other bits. Shame. Seems like a great deal though.

hi. i have reposted the link. i have the original asus t100 as has office 2013 not 365. i highly recommend it due to battery life and even more awesome now dual booted so can play touchscreen games with my son or scratch jr and run proper websites like premierleaguepass on the pc! the key thing for me was battery life. have so many old laptops that hardly last an hour or so if that. so this claims to be 11 hours and even if it degrades to half that still great. i use it to play football manager 2015 on marketing tips fine. use it to steam stream games from my main pc downstairs to my bedroom upstairs hooked up via hdmi to another screen. i use it for netflix etc too. you only get 15gb free space on hard drive to an external memory card is essential but 128gb is 30 quid now and 64 (which I have 11 quid?) prob 32gb a fiver?

Whats the battery life like on this
MrPuddington to thecoolguy
9 Mar 16 #80
In my experience it is ok during use, 5 hours are quite normal. But in standby, it can be very unpredictable, and drain the battery over night. Even off it drains the battery within a week.

Oh, and the battery reporting of Windows is absolutely woeful. You have to type in some cryptic command, and it gives you some equally cryptic figures. So you never really knows which program is draining the battery.

I have the miix3 which I bought quite a while ago. It has the 1920 x 1200 screen which is nice however due to the resolution it does make some of the menus small and not all of the headings can be enlarged. It is nicely built for the money and I decided to buy a windows 2 in 1 as I thought it would be ok to take away for weekends away, for surfing in bed etc etc. I decided not to buy an android tablet as I have an android phone and to me it would be nothing new. However I found I didn't really use the miix at all. Don't get me wrong its ok but it is slow and find the new version of mail irritating and found myself a little frustrated with trying to use windows in tablet format so the keyboard is always attached which makes it heavy. I ended up just using my macbook pro for surfing. I was disappointed that I couldn't get it to work with Op-com which appears to be a windows 10 issue and not the miix but in the end the miix has spent most of its time sat in a drawer in the bedroom.

Then I saw an offer for the Lenovo Tab 2 and bought it. Same size, same screen resolution and haven't put it down since I unpackaged it. Putting Lenovo's Tab 2 and the Miix 3 side by side the Tab 2 is lighter, has better battery life and is just faster and is a little bit more pleasurable experience when surfing, checking emails etc. It does have it's pitfalls though as Chrome and other apps are the mobile version with no facility to use a classic or full version that I can find. If I was to sell one and keep one I would keep the Tab 2 and sell the miix 3.

I suppose it depends what you want. I f you need windows then the miix 3 is a good buy. If you don't need windows then just buy the Tab 2 or similar android device as it's just quicker and easier to use.

This is good for the price but if you have extra money to spend, then go for others.

Don't think I will keep RemixOS installed as their are problems with sound, screen rotation does not work and for some reason the Miix 300 intial boots at power in landscape and when booting into RemixOS stays stuck in landscape and also battery indicator does not seem to be working as stays at 100%.

Viper4Windows installed ....It's a big improvement ....a bit of trial and error getting the settings of the user interface right ...but after a bit of faffing it does work well.... I wouldn't say ipad "quality" .... but a whole lot better...passable I think would be a good word.... I'm using my Sennhieser's at the mom ....the sound is a bit thick ....but again better than it was...Before reading your post I was thinking of returning mine... I'll hold on to it now.... A big th

Oh shame sound doesn't work on miix. Was fine on asus t100 though people are talking about new sound drivers for miix even on windows? Maybe post feedback on xda forum? Ironically someone has challenged me on d: drive but you had the same problem! For me, I will definitely keep it as have lots of amazon free apps, humble bundle android games and android educational games for my son and he recently lost his hudl.
jameshothothot
10 Mar 16 #95
actually sound problems for remixos people not xda! xda just for the installer. I am so pleased it works for you! would love to see if anyone gets it working on dell venue, linx, argos my tablet 2 etc and other budget devices (gearbest chuwi etc) as think dual boot makes these tablets bargains!
mcek
10 Mar 16 #96
question before i consider buying this and installing RemixOs: you need to have the keyboard attached to use Remix? looking over the xda pages, is it not Shift+Restart after powering on to choose Windoze or Remix, so no Remix without the keyboard?
jameshothothot to mcek
10 Mar 16 #107
i didn't know about the shift reset thing. i used to get thete by going to settings.... then I can't remember what... but there was a way to force it to boot up on some admin settings where you can boot from other device. i am at work so cannot test to find out.
jordanc93 to mcek
10 Mar 16 #116
Main problem with this running RemixOS at the moment is that it is impossible to use with the keyboard as it loads up in portrait and stays stuck that way. No option in RemixOS to manually rotate screen and auto rotate does not work. For some reason the bios is also in portrait mode instead landscape.

is it possible to install regular windows apps ( like adobe digital editions - to transfer books to my kobo ereader) on this machine. i am not clear as to whether this is a laptop and all windows apps can be installed or is it a hybrid tablet and you have to install apps through windows store
thanks
mcek to meerar
10 Mar 16 #99
you can use it as a regular low-spec windows machine, small screen icons though, install your m$ sw, although how they perform isn't guaranteed, OR install the few tablet apps from the windows store.
dual booting will give you more tablet apps from the android market

Can any of the guys that have installed Viper4windows tell me what I'm doing wrong? I have installed and run as admin , but It simply doesn't seem to be doing anything - I mean nothing at all, doesn't seem to be connected. I looked at a guide on youtube and there was an option to de-select "don't allow enhancements" (or similar) under the properties of the standard driver - but I don't seem to have that option :disappointed:

see as some one with a 4k 40inch monitor i feel 1080p on a 10inch screen would be way to small and would much rather thave this sort of resolution... that said my item has just arrived so once i'm home from work we shall see if that is actually the case.
Just Wondering
10 Mar 16 #103
Well , as it happens , it works perfectly for me , 1080p is perfect , nice when you have the tab sat in your lap or on a desk , Crisp and sharp HD display.
Scotta965
10 Mar 16 #104
Don't get me wrong i wasn't complaining i'm just saying it seems like it would be too small. i mean each quarter of a 40inch 4k monitor is 1080p 20inch so halfing that size but at the same resolution seems really small.
Just Wondering
10 Mar 16 #105
Well it works really well for those Ipad users out there , they have even higher resolution displays for the same size screen.

Infact my android tablet a Asus Z580c has a resolution of 2048 x 1536 and is only 8 inch , works great, lovely display.

But I am sure if the two Lenovo tablets where viewed side by side....the 1080 screen would be considered the one to choose...
Scotta965
10 Mar 16 #106
Yes but Apple Ipad's scale much better than windows... Android also scales much better than windows... i meant if using it at 100% scaling the icons and text would be way to small at 1080p for 10inch on windows

10 Mar 16 #109
on windows 10 the scaling is great , it was built with tablets in mind , it even has a tablet mode built into windows 10 ...
Scotta965
10 Mar 16 1 #110
its better than windows 7/8 but old applications etc still don't always scale well
mcek
10 Mar 16 #111
ok, thanks, so there should be a way of a start menu when powering on and using as a tablet only.
various forums, i see the bios menu or a grub menu, will try for a grub. unless remix is useless without the keyboard, then will try out the android only image.
mcek

i have a lenovo thinkpad 8 permanently hooked up to a monitor and keyboard.
one reason is that it replaced a netbook as a low-power unit.
the other reason, windows 10 screen on a full HD 8" screen is terrible. no way to scale the menus or icons, way, way too small, so i really need to use a mouse, then a monitor helps too.
android screens work. my windows mobile works. windows tablet, the screen is ok but there are no apps. windows tablet as a pc, sorry.

I have to say I think this is great little tablet, for this money its brilliant for those that just want a functioning windows PC, As a predominantly mac user, I need it for a couple of things - 1) So my son can log onto his school homework site, and 2) For flashing Samsung Android phones. I've had a little play and I am blown away with what £120 gets you today - Yes those speakers are a pain, and I can't get Viper4Windows to work despite following the instructions to the tee :disappointed: But thats not a huge deal.
jordanc93
10 Mar 16 1 #115
Had same problem as you regarding viper4windows so installed DFX Audio Enhancer instead and works a treat, certainly improved the sound. You have to keep the program open though if you want to use it for free or pay in order to have it running in background even at startup.
Scotta965

you can get 3rd party apps to forcefully change rotation.
jordanc93
10 Mar 16 #118
Yes I tried 8 different ones none of them would work. Look online you will see a few posts about this with people trying rotation apps and them not working with RemixOS the problem is to do with Lenovo for some reason during power on the bios loads in Portrait yet my HP Omni 10 and many other tablets ive seen load bios in landscape. When selecting RemixOS from boot options it says in Portrait.

so yet another Lenovo problem. i was going to look into dual booting my Lenovo tablet 8, but there always some wifi disconnect problem, and the hi-res makes the portable windows pc aspect unbearable for me. a lower res screen like this miix 300 is more useful as a dual boot.... would also like to know about how the Android only image fares.

I've found when charging, if I rotate the charging pin (which happens easily when you move it while charging) it stops charging, give it a little push and it starts again. Anyone else having this issue or have I got a faulty unit?
Its not a huge deal now, but might be a worry if something could get worse over time, Why the hell they didn't use a micro usb is beyond me?

Ah thanks, Problem cured! Like you say, it really does need quite a push to be in properly, harder than my better judgement would normally let me push! and then it becomes quite hard to remove too. I suppose its better to make it tight and let it loosen over time than have it too loose to start with and then have it falling out a year down the line.

Well received mine and I'm quite disappointed in it to be honest. The touchpad is awful, unresponsive and doesn't do scrolling very well. You start moving your finger on it and it takes a second to register and move the mouse on the screen. The touchscreen feels rough.. doenst feel smooth running your finger across. Screen is poor and everything looks washed out. I think it's to heavy to be a tablet and too small as a laptop, being top heavy you can't really use it on the knee. I would save your money and spend it on something else... mines going back.

have you taken the screen protector off? I did and it made a huge difference to both looks and feel of the screen. The track pad issue is a funny one, I've heard a few people saying that it is a bit flaky, and also that the keyboard disconnects intermittently, but mine has been fine, and so has the second one I bought for my son, maybe quality control is poor and inconsistent?

Finally got mine (Miix3), that's the one with the better screen to run Op-com diagnostic software. Op-com won't run on win 10 as the driver isn't digitally signed. Even doing the workaround by doing a custom re-start didn't work. I had to download VMware Workstation 32-bit and Windows 7 basic but it runs fine. Only got 5gb drive space left though and I only got office, chrome, avast, skype and bluestacks on it !! Perfect world now, win 10 and a very portable diagnostic laptop with decent battery life.

Just purchased this today, and just to confirm that this unit is not 615grams as advertised on the JL site. It is in fact 1.2kg inc keyboard and 620grams without keyboard. I wish they added this in the specification. This is definitely not a "lightweight package".
Smartguy1
28 Mar 16 #142
That's because originally when JL posted this it didn't advertise it as having a keyboard. I sent them an email and they confirmed it DIDN'T include a keyboard. I emailed them back and asked if they had done a physical check on the tablet and if they hadn't they need to do one because according to other retailers it did or does even and referred them to the first discussions on here a few months back. They changed the advert but looks like they didn't change the weight. How someone as big as JL can get specifications wrong is not very professional in my opinion. Even manufacturers get product descriptions wrong but retailers should check for themselves the goods they are selling. It would appear that the miix 300 description on Lenovo's site says 'weight starts at 615g and it doesn't show the keyboard either. PC World got the spec right though.

Someone asked about car diagnostics on these. It will run an ELM 327 and Forscan software on windows 10. I have mine running Op-com also but using windows 7 starter inside a virtual machine. It runs the software fine. I couldn't get it to run Op-com in windows 10 but am still working on it.

Windows 8 and no touch will prove interesting. Best of both worlds on the Lenovo but the larger screen will be useful as well as less weight. The Lenovo is quite heavy.
