Seems a very good price.

Could someone in the know please tell me, I gather with this model I can swap the hdd for an ssd (any ssd of particular brands?) could I then put the original hdd in the cd drive bay or do I need a special hard drive for that? Many thanks.

I have a 2011 13" MBP which is very similar to this. Originally it had a 320GB HDD and 4GB RAM. It now has 2 SSDs thanks to an optibay (512 and 256GB) and 16GB of RAM, so they can take quite a few upgrades!

1280*800 screen and with a mechanical drive for £700...not voting cold but what a bloody ripoff. Even if I wanted a Macbook badly I can buy a Windows laptop with way better specs and turn it into a Hackintosh with a few hours of work so I really don't see the great deal in this TBH...

I think this is the last model that can be upgraded in terms of both Ram and sticking an SSD in relatively easily - both made a huge difference to my MacBook of this model but then I only paid £320 second hand off a buy and sell site so didn't mind paying a bit extra for the upgrades - it's also the same price in Currys

Apart from the processor which is slightly better, this laptop has identical specifications (RAM, HDD, screen res) as my Dell E5410 from 2010 that I got on eBay for £35 (which, before you ask, also runs OS X fine).
But, of course, it's Apple, and whilst it's a good saving off the retail price, the screen resolution will become infuriating and I'd expect a SSD, even from Apple, at this price.
So, it's an odd combination of specs, but if you must have a brand new MacBook on the cheap, here you go.

Sold mine for almost this much last year..but cold. Screen is terrible compared to current tech and you'll be adding ~£60 for an SSD anyway. Grab a used x230 or t430 and chuck in an SSD and you've got just as good a package for half the price. Unless you are one of many apple fans who struggle to use anything other than OSX.

If this was available for £850 4 years ago, what makes you think it's a hot deal at £700 now?
Computer tech moves on very quickly and the sum of the components in this 2012 model are not worth £700. You can get much better machines for your £700, and if you want an Apple then your £700 is better invested in a newer model.

A valid point but still will be obsolete 3 years before the newer model. Its going to cost you in the region of £50 to upgrade it to the current spec of 128Gb SSD & 8Gb RAM. Is the £250 saving really worth it given you have a much faster overall machine with a much better display? Down to personal choice I suppose but to me its a no brainer
christech81
17 Mar 16#80
Agree with the comments that it's old tech but the components at the time were pretty decent and the build quality will be excellent.

£700 for a 2012 laptop? Still very expensive!
Apple have been using this strategy for ages. Take the lowest/oldest spec and make it just £100 cheaper than the current one. Tha'ts why a 2012 laptop is £899 on their website, so you can quickly decide that a 2015 laptop for £999 is not that expensive.

Yet what even the combination of two (or three of you can get) of those 5th gen i3 machines do cannot be compared to what this MacBook Pro does. How long is your £300 laptop will last? I guess less definitely than half of the lifetime of this MacBook Pro.

Most people here are hardware specs and brand name bigots. We use both, some apps only run OS X. In essence, for specs alone it is painfully expenses especially on lack of upgradability, so if any one brings out its own OS X like platform plus same hardware made in China at half price with hardware upgradability, Apple would be consigned to history in a financial year, but as a total solution inclusive of serviceability, usability, resale value, street cred, interoperability in its Apple ecosphere by severe lock down, it is ace.
