Why the comments about gaming? Why as soon as some one sees a desktop they think ahh gaming PC, this is nowhere near a gaming PC. Ah but you need to add in a GTX 750Ti then it will game, oh really well done, it's still not a gaming PC, it's crap for gaming and you shouldn't be thinking of putting a GPU in it unless you like budget gaming. Budget gaming for £353 (adding in the cost of a GTX 750Ti) it should be called, cack gaming for people who can't afford a proper gaming PC, not their fault probably, oh I hate this! really I do, shut up about gaming on crap desktops. Crappy new desktop that you don't and shouldn't want for gaming.

This desktop should be called the "No need for gaming here, no gaming to be seen, please move along, OI! you I said no gaming wtf are you trying oh GTA V really? GTFO!"

That's a great price for a good system, although you would probably want to add a discrete graphics card for modern gaming at above 720p. Hot.

I'd check with the seller, but these cheap gaming machines will usually come with a PSU that is low quality and/or doesn't have any PCIe connectors. In that case the best I'd suggest would be a Radeon R7 250, since you should be able to run it in dual-graphics mode with the 7650K and get respectable performance at 720p. Anything higher and you'd have to change the PSU, at which point you'd be better off looking for a different PC anyway.

I wouldn't buy this system if you want add a descrete GPU. The CPU included is supposed to let you play some games, if you don't need it then you should get an FX-Series CPU, which are more powerful overall and probably cheaper.

Could also build it yourself if you fancy: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/3cWLvK

Roughly identical parts but better PSU and Case, would work out £230-250

Bought from Fierce PC about 8 months ago. Great customer service, but the power supply on this case is cheapest you can get. So incredibly loud, it's literally like they've tried to make it loud. It also broke after about 4 months but got it sent back with the Warranty and got it back within 6 days or something which seemed amazing. I've bought another power supply and voided the warranty now though.

Great if you just need to book a holiday and check your facebook (I believe people still do use that site). Which of course does not need anything close to 8Gb RAM.
For anything much more than that, you're going to have to swap out the PSU, the hard disk is nowhere even close to enough space for games AND media, so add those 2 in and you'd wonder why you didn't just pay a bit more.

If this is 2x 4gb dimms for dual channel the machine should be able to play almost all moderm games at 1366x768 (you can't really buy 720p monitors!) with most things switched off/low.

If it's 1 x 8gb dimm and single channel, you might struggle to play anything in the last 3-4 years :P

Because they might not want to buy Windows, if they do then they can go and buy it separately to the hardware. It's not an alternative, it's an option, like you have AMD or Intel, Nvidia or AMD/ATI. It's being robbed because Windows is over-priced, poor quality, featureless software that destroys the freedoms of its users.

I actually thought it wasn't legal to supply a PC without an OS, happy to see that stupid rule either doesn't exist anymore or is being thoroughly ignored. Just another method of Micro$oft bullying and oppressing their way to the top.
rev6
23 Mar 16 2 #22
It's an alternative OS...

Linux can be very frustrating. Simple tasks can be a long drawn out process. It's not ideal for a lot of people.

The rest of your comment is just silly.
dar72
23 Mar 16 #23
You're suggesting that Windows is the default OS for the world, you're very wrong

Linux is far easier to use than Windows ever has been and ever will be. Windows doesn't even have a package manager? So you have to trawl around the Internet to install things? So out of date.

You think freedom (including your freedom) is silly? Wake up

Linux now has many games available so for a budget gaming PC, it's an ideal choice.

Definitely agree, I've used Linux on and off for 10 years or so. Linux is very powerful the command line excellent, although Windows has Powershell which is also powerful, the Linux command line is the real command line, if something breaks and it often does in Linux you will not fix it as a noob or it will take you an inordinate amount of time to fix. I currently use OSX, Linux and Windows 10, I hope the Vulkan API takes off and we get a suitable alternative to DX12 and not forced to use Windows 10.
fishmaster
23 Mar 16 #25
I hope people do migrate to open source software, as I stated Vulkan API which would free us from the closed system of DX12/Windows 10. The latest Nvidia drivers have support for Vulkan API, was surprised when I saw it, due to Nvidia being b'stards and all that, especially that Gameworks crap they do.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vulkan_(API)

23 Mar 16 1 #26
Where did I say Windows was the primary choice? If you were on Linux, Windows is an alternative OS and vice versa.

That's subjective, I think Linux is frustrating. Not easier to use at all.

I'm not saying Linux is a bad choice here but you're being anti-Windows pro-Linux because the former isn't open-source and free? That's silly.

Freedom? When you buy a game from Steam, isn't that the same as buying Windows? Both are closed-source so what's the difference? Nothing.

I run many open-source software on Windows, it's not a big deal.
rev6

for gaming... i got a second hand business pc small form factor and added a gtx 750ti. i think this is good but if you are going to add a 750ti then as guy above said, better to get an fx processor as otherwise the gtx 750ti is doing graphics and you have wasted money on a low powered processor with built in graphics?

If people were thinking about getting a 750ti to put in the machine, it'd we worth swapping to one of the Athlon x4 models as the onboard GPU part of the APU would be useless then.

With the 750ti: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/WggjP6

Knocks the base PC without a GPU down to around £230, sparing a few more pennies for that Nvidia card and is a slightly faster CPU clock wise.
dar72
24 Mar 16 #38
No, it's a discussion. The whole point of a forum is to have discussions. If everyone agreed with you, what would be the point?

Well, I think Windows is frustrating and difficult to use, not difficult as in I can't get something done on it, just finding things and having to use a mouse to click on things rather than typing commands. Then if you come to do any networking, programming, pen testing or sysadmin stuff Windows is totally useless since it's completely featureless without trawling the Internet for third party software.

Yes Steam is proprietary and DRM but my life doesn't depend on gaming, scarily...for some people it seems to. However, with Windows, your entire security and privacy model is fundamentally compromised by the underlying kernel and OS as a whole. Steam is both good and bad when it comes to Linux, they've helped us a lot by getting more games onto Linux, commercial gaming titles will bring more people to Linux but on the other hand their client is proprietary and closed as are most of the games sold through it and the number of FOSS game projects seems to be decreasing now as people want to make games to put on steam for money.

I don't do email, IRC, IM, banking etc through Steam games so the risk is minimal. Of course, you can always put it into some kind of sandboxed container if you really feel the need.

The other aspect of freedom is being free to customise your OS in any way that you want, this is why I won't use Linux distros like Ubuntu either, too out of date and they dictate to you which desktop environment to use, which packages are installed by default etc

I feel the future of Micro$oft is limited, anyone with any kind of technical ability and/or sense uses Linux and anyone that wants everything done for them sells their soul to Apple

Good. Power to the people!

That's just because it's been programmed into you from childhood where they probably taught you "IT" or "Computing" in school, that isn't what they taught you, what they taught you was how to be a secretary, learning M$ Office isn't computing, it's learning a product, a poor product from a highly unethical company. If you learn how a computer works rather than memorising one product, you'll be able to do anything.

Micro$oft clearly don't follow their own marketing and reputation anyway, everyone used "File, Edit, View etc" menus for decades (Micro$oft didn't invent it btw) and then they replaced it...very user friendly. Then everyone used the "Start" menu, including many Linux desktops...then they removed it...very user friendly. Windows is very frustrating to use and although I haven't used any of the latest versions, they seem to have rapidly gone downhill after Windows 7.

My work laptop has 32GB RAM. It also has a quad core I7 Processor and Nvidia Quadro Graphics. Yet its never had a single game played on it in its working life.

However as it is used for industrial programming and Virtual Machines, the masses of memory are definitely needed.

Way off tangent here.... yes of course this is a forum for discussion, but as I often get reminded by others, the discussion should be about the deal in question, this discussion has veered way off about Windows vs Linux and way off topic. And besides, I didn't make a statement that required anyone to agree with me, I simply stated this PC came with no O/S just like I could have said it came in a black case.

You're actually quoting from a rulebook? Is there something wrong with you? Do you feel that you don't have enough government and rules in your life so you have to make or enforce rules on the Internet?

The Internet used to be the modern "wild west", don't know what happened.

Actually, it seems like Microsoft or Apple are perfect choices for you, obey and comply like a good drone.

Windows 10 is akin to a virus . Even Windows 7 and 8 update to Windows 10 without asking you so that all users can be hacked and tracked by the NSA and MS . It is the biggest breach of peoples security ever. A Windows PC is more likely to brick with a blue screen of death , by a Windows update , than it will ever go wrong from another virus or a hacker.

Anyone who has not tried LInux I recommend downloading any version of Puppy Linux on to a CD or DVD. Any Windows machine can run it off the CD without installing anything and it will make old Windows machines fly.

Windows is like the video VHS . Phillips and Betamax were just as good if not better , but VHS sold more and had more video films available ( hire shops ) . Likewise Windows has more free and paid progs that will run on it, so for the moment Windows is still default for lots of people.

Computers have always been available without an operating system on them, just that some well known names did not push them.

Re Power supplies OP,s find is a 500W power supply which is not bad considering lots of new PCs nowadays seem to offer less than that. Stick a self powered hard drive in a USB port to offer easy unlimited expansion and I think this is actually not a bad deal. Not everyone is interested in gaming ; so gamers could save their pennies up for something of a higher spec.
