Presumably you've never owned your own shop, and perhaps not even your own business - just because one or two people can do something at a certain price doesn't mean everyone else can afford to do the same.
If things carry on like this then eventually there will only be aldi and lidl left - do you think everything would still be so cheap if they had a virtual monopoly or cartel ?
In order for aldi and lidl to buy something cheaply, very often the producer has to have other customers who pay more - I'm not an economist but it seems like common sense to me.
In no way am I defending Tesco or anyone else, but it rather annoys me when people seem to assume that every retailer can buy every product at the same price as every other retailer, and so those charging a bit more are ripping us off - perhaps aldi and lidl are better at sourcing cheaper suppliers, but if lots of producers don't make a decent profit, then all that will be left are those prepared to cut corners with quality , pay third world workers a grain of rice above starvation level etc.
For an example nearer home, read the ebay discussion boards, where lots of sellers are complaining that opening up markets to Chinese sellers is merely starting a race to the bottom (price-wise), so that consumers will benefit in the short term of course, but eventually there will be no choice left - how many of you still have a thriving local high street near you (going to be a few I know, but you get my point I hope).

Might not be every ones cup of tea :smiley: but went with this from Amazon Italy, taken me 3 months to get the hang of it but it makes great coffee, should I post it as a deal?
If it takes the Nespresso capsules then i can recommend it. Have been Nespresso drinker for 6 years now and no other capsule machine style coffee comes close. Bar pressure in machines like this is key however. Apparently the higher the bar pressure greater the quality of coffee from your capsule. I think this one is 20 bar and most Nespresso style machines seem to be higher than the other coffee capsule brands.
If you however dont like the circa 30p a capsule price Nespresso charge you i can recommend the Dual-IT ones from Costco as they are not bad.

Are you sure? After reading multiple articles about it, I can't find a single one that says they're considering a grocery delivery service. In fact, the only time it's even mentioned (the others are all about the wine deliveries that started last year and now this) a spokesman said they wouldn't necessarily start selling food online and wouldn't "do anything to threaten our cost base" - something online grocery deliveries would do massively.
The only reason the other supermarkets do it is because they don't want you to go elsewhere - all of them lose money on home deliveries. The only bespoke delivery service (Ocado) made it's first profit in 15 years this year - though nowhere near enough to come close to paying off the previous losses (presumably why it's shareprice is plummeting).

You may be right about Aldi/Lidi having cheaper sources but I am sure that they have significantly less overheads and that contributes to the lower prices. Their advertising is minimal compared to Asda. My local Aldi typically has about 5 members of staff working in the store who are ultra efficient at putting products out on display. My local Asda needs 2 members of staff to put a bottle of ketchup on a shelf whilst chatting about their weekend or 5 members of staff to hang around the self checkout area. In Aldi, on the checkouts, the staff scan about 10 products a second whilst in Asda they'll help you pack your bags but putting 1 item in every 10 seconds.

Tesco used to offer free click and collect but not anymore. Aldi fresh food is very cheap and very good quality compared to ASDA and tesco. Maybe Chinese **** junk food may be cheaper in tesco but everything else is more expensive. I only shop at tesco when I have tesco vouchers or in hurry as Tesco Extra is nearby. But when I compare price and quality, Aldi and Lidl constantly beat Tesco and ASDA. I only wish I had a Aldi or Lidl nearby instead of expensive tesco.

Aldi/Lidls low prices are down to them ordering in huge quantity one, for example, tomato ketchup in one size whereas Tesco etc will have a number of brands including their own and in various sizes. The limited range allows them to sell far more per item and hence they can negotiate lower prices with their suppliers who are guaranteed a high level of orders.

Aldi doesn't stock the products I usually buy for my special (acutally it's called healthy) diet.... The only thing I love in aldi is the pre-pared pomegranate. It's so sweet. I wen in this evening as well and I just picked up some pomegranate, pineapple, toilet rolls and some joghurts (oh yes, sweetener but they don't have stevia so I had to buy sucralose which is not the best on the market) BANG...19 quid....... How can you call this store cheap? Yeah, junk food like chocolate, frozen junks etc are cheap but why do you eat those things??

It won't. It's unprofitable, and only works for Tesco etc because of the high prices they charge all their customers, including those who don't shop online. Aldi have a much lower pricing structure, and deliveries would make no commercial sense - unless customers were prepared to pay a hefty additional delivery charge, perhaps £15.

Of course it's very profitable. But the main reason for that is that it's an extremely low-cost operation. Internet deliveries of groceries without a substantial charge just wouldn't fit with that business model. Aldi are happy to leave unprofitable ventures like that to the main players, and they only do it to retain customer share and because their high prices allow them to do it.

Tescos OWN brand arent expensive. The majority of the time it is the same cost as Aldis, and if you REALLY want bargain basement stick to Tesco value stuff, then you'll come out with more change than you would at Aldi.
Its about time their specials went online, means i dont have to go in their God-awful stores that remind me of Kwik-save from the early 90's and their customer service which is basically nothing whatsoever.
Aldi's success stems largely from powerful, one-sided advertising which has worked tremendously.
The horrific checkout experience, long queues, near out-of date products and the whole layout is like a jumble sale.
The only reason i went into aldi & Lidl before was because of their specials, now - i never need to go again :smiley:

Trusted reviews gave the Ambiano Espresso 4 tars out of 5 and marked it down mostly because of inconvenience of on/off switch and they were unsure that it switched off after use but it did not stay on, this was because no mention was made in the instructions.

You're mistaken, I'm afraid. Aldi and Lidl use exactly the same suppliers that all the other UK supermarkets use. Some of the foods are imported - just as some of the foods the others sell are imported. The proportion of imported food in Aldi and Lidl is much the same as it is anywhere else.
Aldi butter, for example, comes from the same creamery as Country Life - and their Stilton comes from the same creamery as the M&S Stilton. Much the same with everything else they sell - same producers as all the other supermarkets.

Lets bring this discussion to an end. Do you recognise these Brands, Akai, Ferguson, Hitachi, JVC, Panasonic, Philips, Sanyo, Sharp, Toshiba and others all well known brand names you can trust, Yes? Now Vestel now that's a Brand you can't trust because you've never heard of it. Well Vestel make TV's for all the forenamed manufacturers and a lot of OEM's make the same products as well known brands but re-badged and renamed with slightly different box fronts and buttons etc..

read some of the comments about Vestel and you will see why I think rebrands dont guarantee quality - one of the most common phrases on HUKD is - 'Vestel - Avoid!'

That's my point...I could get a bunch of junk food for less than 19 quid at Aldi but do I want it? NO! You can fill your trolly with chocolates, pizzas, pastries etc. And pay 50 quid, but tou are going to spend more when you get overweight, have HBP, diabetes etc. No, thanks!

A: Because its cheaper for Aldi to import it from the continent, from the likes of Poland/Romania etc.
Ive worked out that Aldi will only use UK goods if it is impractical to ship from overseas (meats, dairy and bakery mainly)
Not everything is grown - majority is manufactured. Biscuits, Confectionery, Bakery items, Beverages, Dog/Cat food, Dairy Products etc etc.
As part of my work i visit a lot of manufacturing sites across the country that mainly supply UK supermarkets
The UK has a very large food manufacturing sector & domestic products. If the UK lost the likes of Tesco/Asda - it would be a huge blow to the entire UK.
It worries me that some are vocally encouraging the demise of Tesco/Asda/Sainsburys.

I'm afraid you're absolutely wrong. Check the Aldi and Lidl labels and you'll find that they use exactly the same UK suppliers that Tesco/Asda /Sainsbury use - simply because it's cheaper to do that than it would be to import. And as for the demise of Tesco/Asda/Sainsbury, those supermarkets have been overcharging their customers for many, many years (like the privatised power companies) - I hardly see that as a positive.

And I have worked on arable farms whereby the cabbages, for example, go into various plastic bags, not graded any differently either for whatever store. Most things edible are grown in the first place, Canadian and American wheat is imported as it makes a different loaf to UK wheat but other home-grown grains go into other products, eg cereals and biscuits. From what I have seen all the veg are British products except for the cheaper toms and garlic, and I'd gladly buy English garlic. Tesco's dominated my area one time, not so long ago, good to see competition from the likes of Aldi and Lidl.

Aldi/Lidl supply local produce because that is demanded, UK customers want British beef and English cheddar, but they also sell Italian from Italy, French from France and of course German from Germany giving true authentic foreign foods.
If their home country of origin is anything to go by neither have ambitions to take the place of Asda/Tesco etc. but to provide an alternative, which they do at a competitive price.
They also sell British foods in their Spanish stores along with other European foods and I would assume in their German stores also, although I haven't been there for many years.

I dont agree with you, you need to know who you are buying, with Aldi you can guarantee that Ambiano could be made by literally any company in China.
Vestel is a special case which many people are familiar with so I dont agree that Aldi sell anything other than a rebadge.
Similarly I wouldn't buy a Panasonic which was a Vestel because its only common sense to research what you are buying - with Cookworks from Argos or Ambiano from Aldi there is no consistency in the manufacturing or product control that you get with branded goods as opposed to rebadged goods.

Rebadged goods are not a real branded good and provide no guarantee of quality, the argument remains the same.
I avoid Vestel and I would take care with cheap rebrands like Aldi's Ambiano because you don't really know what the quality will be like.

I think you'll find that Aldi are more than large and capable enough to tie manufacturers down to very precise specifications - and to check that those specifications are being met. And most of their items come with a three year warranty too.
I've been buying Aldi 'specials' for years without any problem whatsoever, as have thousands of others across Europe. You have a choice - if you don't like Aldi, go elsewhere.

Wrong in every aspect, I'm afraid.
1 Aldi's cheaper than Tesco/Asda/Morrisons/Sainsbury across the board - not just on junk food. And by around 25-30% on average. And if you'd actually been into an Aldi or Lidl over recent times you'd have discovered that they sell no more junk food than any other supermarket - probably rather less, in fact.
2 It doesn't take 10 minutes to queue - I rarely wait more than a minute or two, and it's a lot quicker than any of the other supermarkets. It's also hugely quicker to get round the store - who wants or needs 12 different bottled waters?
3 Treated as ****? Utter nonsense - where did you get that daft idea from? :smile:

This makes me laugh. You put an expensive item (or, more specifically, 6 expensive items) in your basket and you complain that the bill was high?!
Pomegranates have always been a luxury item, and therefore come at a premium, just like if I wanted to eat turbot then I'd expect to pay a premium for it over haddock. You can't blame the supermarket for your purchasing choices :laughing:
You could have put in a bag of apples, a bag of oranges, a mango & a punnet of whatever berries you like for well under a fiver, also giving you more variety in your diet, but you chose not to purchase the low cost fruit.
It's not that ALDI is expensive for 'healthy food' but that the food you selected was luxury and therefore expensive.
Oh, and it was cheaper than the other supermarkets

I put in an order. it said it had been dispatched but it never arrived. after 3 weeks I phoned aldi who were very good and refunded my money. I felt by the response that they were used to this happening. it has put me off ordering anything again.

Aldi and Lidl aren't remotely close to taking over. Aldi's only just managed to overtake Waitrose... People keep seeing headlines like "15% sales growth at Aldi while Tesco struggles with 0.1%" without considering that 15% of a small number is still a small number!

If things carry on like this then eventually there will only be aldi and lidl left - do you think everything would still be so cheap if they had a virtual monopoly or cartel ?
In order for aldi and lidl to buy something cheaply, very often the producer has to have other customers who pay more - I'm not an economist but it seems like common sense to me.
In no way am I defending Tesco or anyone else, but it rather annoys me when people seem to assume that every retailer can buy every product at the same price as every other retailer, and so those charging a bit more are ripping us off - perhaps aldi and lidl are better at sourcing cheaper suppliers, but if lots of producers don't make a decent profit, then all that will be left are those prepared to cut corners with quality , pay third world workers a grain of rice above starvation level etc.
For an example nearer home, read the ebay discussion boards, where lots of sellers are complaining that opening up markets to Chinese sellers is merely starting a race to the bottom (price-wise), so that consumers will benefit in the short term of course, but eventually there will be no choice left - how many of you still have a thriving local high street near you (going to be a few I know, but you get my point I hope).

If you however dont like the circa 30p a capsule price Nespresso charge you i can recommend the Dual-IT ones from Costco as they are not bad.
The only reason the other supermarkets do it is because they don't want you to go elsewhere - all of them lose money on home deliveries. The only bespoke delivery service (Ocado) made it's first profit in 15 years this year - though nowhere near enough to come close to paying off the previous losses (presumably why it's shareprice is plummeting).

i stopped shopping there about 6 years ago
It used to be something you can pick up at the corner shop for £1.70
was like 80p at tesco these days they are £2.30 when not on offer
ontop of that they change suppliers every few weeks on own brand products for cheaper and cheaper ingredients
it has got so bad most of theyr own brand is almost unedable these days
they have no one to blame but theyr selves

they need to stop with the trying to charge corner shop prices
and up theyr quality 10 fold
they had a good few years where they fleeced the general population
the vast majority caught on and now they are in trouble

Tescos OWN brand arent expensive. The majority of the time it is the same cost as Aldis, and if you REALLY want bargain basement stick to Tesco value stuff, then you'll come out with more change than you would at Aldi.

Its about time their specials went online, means i dont have to go in their God-awful stores that remind me of Kwik-save from the early 90's and their customer service which is basically nothing whatsoever.
Aldi's success stems largely from powerful, one-sided advertising which has worked tremendously.
The horrific checkout experience, long queues, near out-of date products and the whole layout is like a jumble sale.
The only reason i went into aldi & Lidl before was because of their specials, now - i never need to go again :smiley:

Disclaimer: I am not pretending for one minute that similar things don't go on at the main English supermarkets (Im fairly certain they do), but i am showing that Aldi is no better than them.
Im also somewhat happier going to a British supermarkets as i know i'm buying British food, not imported European stuff.
Aldi butter, for example, comes from the same creamery as Country Life - and their Stilton comes from the same creamery as the M&S Stilton. Much the same with everything else they sell - same producers as all the other supermarkets.
I always struggle to get their Prosecco in our local. Now I can buy a case! I also enjoy their Pinot Noir.
