The Aether Cone is a high end WiFi and Bluetooth speaker system which lets you play music from smartphones, tablets, laptops and more using Bluetooth and WiFi airplay. You can use all your favourite streaming services like Spotify, Deezer and Apple Music or just the music stored on your device. It's also Spotify Connect compatible - so even if you need to take a call or go out of WiFi range, your music will keep playing thanks to the speakers' direct connection to Spotify! With its rechargeable battery you can take it anywhere as well - room to room or out and about with you.

***************************READ***************************************************
FROM £300 TO £50...HOW?

When the Cone was originally released a few years ago it retailed for £300. Aether made a deal with streaming service RDIO for exclusivity on the device, promising features like voice command and intelligent playlists. Unfortunately, in November 2015, RDIO streaming service shut down. Due to the deal with RDIO, Aether was also forced to close, but not before giving the Cone a final update, changing its functionality and exclusive RDIO playback to work as a Bluetooth and WiFi Airplay speaker and enabling Spotify Connect. We have bought all remaining stock of the Cone and slashed the price from £300 to just £50, meaning you literally will not be able to find a speaker of this quality or sound for anything near this price.

The Cone isn't just good looking; it also offers fantastic sound quality. It delivers impressively rich, detailed audio through a 3 Inch woofer and 20-watt amplifier.

aether battery
The Cone is completely wireless and features a built-in battery that offers up to 8 hours of continuous playtime, so you can take it with you wherever you go, in or outside of your home.

aether bluetooth
As you may expect, Cone also supports AirPlay and Bluetooth connectivity, so you can stream music wireless from your smartphone devices even when WI-Fi isn't available.

PREMIUM DESIGN

It's easy to compare the Cone to brands like Sonos and Bose with its clean, modern design. It's also easy to compare the sound quality to top brands as well, because whilst the Cone may be a fraction of the price it really holds its own in terms of sound quality vs models that literally cost 5 times as much. Crafted using the highest quality materials, the unique shape offers an eye catching twist on form and function that's beautiful even when switched off.

The Cone keeps it simple; featuring only 4 buttons that let you control your music; a simple front ring, central touch pad and volume buttons that let you take control of your music with just a tap or a turn.

Set up and connecting is a breeze too, in our tests we were able to connect over Bluetooth and be playing our tunes in less than 30 seconds, no waiting around or spending hours trying to get it working, but that's what you'd expect from a £300 speaker, isn't it? The difference is, you're only paying £50!

aether skipaether volume

aether play
VOLUME: The two metal buttons on the top control the volume.

PLAY/PAUSE: The central touch pad controls your music, tap once to pause and again to resume play.

CHANGE TRACK: To skip to a song, simply turn the dial a notch until you feel it fall into place with a soft yet satisfying magnetic snap.

Try Azatom if you are not sure. For £118 from Amazon you get an amazing speaker that can do Airplay, Bluetooth and Aux input. I loved mine so much I bought a second. Also comes with a remote which can be used to control track selection on your phone (and presumably tablet)

Sound quality seems to be either 'good or 'ok' by most reviewers, but this is at the full retail price....for £50 smackers it sounds a whole lot better to me!
Looks a quality product by all accounts.

looks like the app has been pulled too. that had basic functions like EQ and WiFi. also as this has been updated, Once updated, voice commands, song recommendation and other functionality will no longer work. I wonder how it connects to Spotify then.

Those like me who struggle to justify it, we are getting close to BBQ season (hey it's dry and over 15 degrees outside) and this will be great for BBQs thanks to the portability. Beats any other Bluetooth speaker at this sort of price point from what I can tell!

Watch some HONEST reviews on youtube etc.. They are all basicly saying this product is rubbish. Some saying this product is awesome, those are payed.

It is just a failed start-up product and now they want to get rid of the stock somehow. The price of 400$ in the US was just a joke. For 50P its worth a try but im not so much an experimental guy.

If you buy it for the style its fine but dont expect much of the sound quality.

All of the reviews I have read are comparing this device to other $300-400 devices and it fails to deliver the same level of sound quality according to the reviewers but most of the criticism is aimed at the frustrating voice recognition and thinking aspects.

I've got several sub £50 bluetooth speakers so will be interesting to see how it stacks up against those for sound quality and usability

22 Mar 16 #62
Using terms like the "Sonos experience" is a classic marketing tactic.

1. You buy it thinking you'll get an audio experience on par with Sonos equipment.
2. You receive the item and realise is it well below the Sonos audio experience.
3. You challenge the manufacturer, who states that the 'Sonos experience' they were referring to was 'wifi audio'. They never mentioned 'quality of audio'.

It's a classic "punter fills in the blanks with what they want to hear" approach.

I'm not saying this isn't any good. I'm just alerting you to having unrealistic expectations, based on the marketing blurb.Caveat Emptor.

I've got a couple of other Bluetooth speakers, again, no problem connecting with them. Even the tablet that it sort of works with, it stops working intermittently. When connecting via Bluetooth with an iPad I had various degree of success. Sometimes it works fine, sometimes it won't connect, sometimes iPad won't even see it when the Cone is in the pairing mode. Since there will be no new firmware it won't get any better with time. It's a shame because when it works it sounds lovely.

My lollipop tablet connects fine to the speaker. As suggested this could be a marshmallow issue. Anyways wasted a lot of time trying to fix connection issue. Looks like it's going back.

Also there does not seem to be any indication of battery charging or when fully charged. Is that correct?

I set it up yesterday so today is first day without all the shenanigans

1. Airplay, PC windows 7 using Airfoil. Today it recognised it straight away and clicked on something in media monkey and it's happily playing. However the turning of the dial to change tracks doesn't work nor the pause. Worth pointing out I already had airplay set up on my PC as I have an airplay box connected to my sony speaker dock and if you use airfoil you need to reboot after setting up I think this was the case with my neet box too but I forgot so I couldn't figure out why it wasn't connecting and was fiddling with my firewall and home network settings for ages.
2. Bluetooth connected via marshmallow on an LG G4 using allconnect app. Absolutely fine. Dial sort of works, I tried it on two apps, poweramp and the one that came with the phone. Both work going back a track by turning anti, clockwise, both pause. However both react differently to going forward, poweamp just pauses, stock app goes forward but also pauses.

It doesn't have a jack port which is a shame but as I said airplay today was just turn the thing on, open airfoil which then opened media monkey for me and chose my track to play. Very easy. And a battery indicator would help. It had battery life straight out of the box so I think it might be a lithium in there, should be at original price. Will have to read the Amazon description.

On the sales page for this if you scroll down you'll find instructions in PDF form. I'd grab this as I imagine once sold out it won't be available, it's not the standard instructions it's the one for the new software created by appliance direct group. As mentioned it also has a type which most will spot, address is 192.168... not 193.168...

I got mine today. It's a classy looking well built speaker.
So far I've only used Bluetooth. Very easy to setup. All works well on my Samsung S4 (Android 5.0.1). Sounds is good for £52.was worth having a punt at.
IMHO If you just want a cool looking portable speaker its money well spent.

29 Mar 16 #138
Bluetooth and airplay (airaudio) both working from my android phone running 5.1.1

Bluetooth took a while for the aether to appear, rebooted the phone a few times then it appeared and paired and works fine now.

Sounds OK, bit snap crackle and pop at not all that loud a volume, so bit disappointed there.

Also, seals were broken on box, is this to do with the updating of the firmware?

Received my second one yesterday and now have them both set up to play my iTunes on my mac simultaneously. I also tried the free test version of WHAALE on my phone and that worked well with Airplay. Not a bad little wireless set up for the price.

Hi, I am the Product Manager at Buy It Direct, responsible for bringing the Aether cone to the UK market. I would like to offer feedback to some of the comments posted on this forum.. A few have asked about the seals being broken - this is indeed because we updated the firmware. For details of the firmware used, please visit aether.com. Some have raised concern about support now that Aether have gone bust - we of course warranty the product for 1 year but also we have contacted the original manufacturer and are looking to import some spare batteries and adaptors so we will be able to continue supporting the product beyond the first year. The instruction manual is also our own and yes, we made a typo with the IP address - it should be 192.xxx and not 193.xxx. Any other questions, please ask.

31 Mar 16 1 #141
Hi, I am the OP, why did they suddenly increase the price? we was buying at £49.99 within hours you changed price to £59.99 when it was advertised you bought the entire lot from Aether.com, we would love some clarification on this please.

We operate a partly-automated dynamic pricing model, based on stock levels and demand. Pricing the cone to start with was difficult. As they had retailed previously at over £200, it was hard to work out a value now that the functionality had changed. I thought they should have been priced at closer to £99 than £49 - they are a high spec speaker and would cost more than £49 to manufacture. So given the large quantity I bought, we decided to start off at the low end and gauge market reaction. Within days of going live, sales went ballistic, with only a small percentage coming from this forum. We couldn't keep up with demand as we were processing the firmware updates ourselves and we were also about to run out of stock too quickly so the system recommended the price to be £59 which I approved. For some reason, run rate on the copper/black one continued and the white one slowed. Consequently the white one has dropped back to £49.
I hope you understand - I work in a very fast moving trading environment - we don't operate like a normal retailer where prices remain fixed forever until an artificial "Sale". In many cases our prices move even quicker than the Cone has moved - some products I manage have daily price changes.

i can get to the set up page on my browser i select my home wifi network type in the wifi password then a green box appears saying something like it's changed over (i can't remember the exact words)but the cone just ends up timing out them saying couldn't connect to the network. that's why i can't grey the Wi-Fi part working. is getting connected and knowing is connected to the network im having the problems with. any help appreciated all .

Thanks for the reply. It was a poor move even then, all you had to do is delay despatch for product either way your company was in profit each unit purchased by you was bought well lower than the £49.99 even then i am happy with my purchase no faults yet.
martyj999

Just ordered the white one, mainly because delivery to NI on this was a reasonable £2.95, the black is still too expensive at £59.95 + £14.95 delivery!!

1 Apr 16 1 #148
I did the same, purely because the price went I up I held off, and I was buying one each for my three daughters for there rooms as I already have one and paid a lot more for it 8 months back. I do the same with amazon as soon as they get the clicks the price goes up. I understand why companies do it, but don't like seeing it especially so quickly aswell.
essexgangsta
1 Apr 16 #149
I would say the Black and Copper is the more popular choice hence why the price is sill GBP59. And What colours did my daughters want? Black and Copper. Perhaps i'll buy when the buying frenzy stops the system drops the price.

Got mine yesterday really pleased with it. I bought it to replace a Sonos play 1. Sound wise it's not quite up there with the Sonos but is not far off. Bass is a little lacking in places but overall the sound is impressive enough for the price that I've already ordered a second.

So, I bought the Aether Cone based on the write up and design of the Cone.

Delivery was exceptional, pretty much next day even though I didn't pay the extra!

Now the Cone, the design is great, it looks stylish, its now too big or too small, I love it HOWEVER the sound, the sound is an issue.

We have found that in a small room, not on its loudest option its great, but if you turn the volume up a lot there is a crackling sound or a white noise sound in the background. It also appear to make internal noises because its resting on a flat surface. Not ideal.

Buy this if you want to use it as a speaker for a small room for background music etc but don't buy it if you think you can fill a room with amazing sound for a gathering as you will only be disappointed.

We contemplated sending it back, but decided it'll be useful for the kitchen.

What media player are you using to try and get it work? The cone is setup to use AirPlay. If you are using Windows Media you will get problems. However through ITunes / AirPlay mine works perfect.

Afternoon Blake
I am trying to set up the cone with my home wifi. Am doing this as per instructions by connecting iphone to cone wifi, tapping in (corrected) ip address which brings up the aether cone config page - fill these in including selecting my home wifi from the drop down list and placing password for this. Press submit, and as fuller880 experienced, get a green window open up stating that 'device code may have changed' with no options given to select, followed very quickly by cone wifi turning off!
Any advise gratefully received - no number to contact laptops/appliances etc direct although have mailed them and awaiting reply

Hopefully some of you are still reading this.
Speaker controls on the actual speaker, the dial, volume and centre button do not work in airplay.
Bluetooth controls don't work properly. For example turning the dial forward moves the track forward but also causes it to pause.

So it was returned and I got this response:
Please accept this as confirmation that the speaker returned has now been tested and our technicians have advised that no fault has been found.
The Controls from the speaker are not designed to work on wireless, they only function when using the speaker as blue tooth.

I've had 2 people confirm their controls work on airplay, would someone please double check for me what controls ON the actual speaker (not PC or mobile controls) work in airplay and bluetooth. Thanks in advance.

Speaker was great for 4 days, then Bluetooth stopped working. It had previously worked with my laptop on Media player and Ipod touch. Tried all the resets, both devices say connected, but no sound coming from the speaker. I'm waiting for the seller to call me back with technical support. Has anyone had issues with returns? As I suspect that will be all available to me. (Have not used Wi-Fi) Thanks

I got one of these on this offer but now have to say I have just chucked it in the bin. Having not used it for a while I dug it out to use in the garden today & the battery is dead. Won't charge with supplied mains adapter, managed to switch it on briefly but it then went off & seems to be dead. Complete rubbish is my description of this speaker so if any other company offers this at a cheap rate at any time - look the other way.

we have had this speaker while now - we often have issues connecting, it can be a bit of a faff. We dont even bother trying to use a different device in case it messes up! Looks great though and sound is ok for general use but dont expect much if you want it really loud.
