AndyRoyd, thank you for the warning re. 'avoid unexpected service levels'. Having had a look at the t&c (that you linked to), the terms are worryingly ambiguous - not least the section about recovery to ' onward destination, garage, home address' *whichever is nearer*. To me, that means the broken down car (and driver/passengers) will only be taken to the nearest of the three options.
There is a reason the annual cover is only £19.

Yes, when applying it asks for the date you want the policy to start.

I use a company called Autoaid Breakdown Recovery Insurance through Equity insurance & have needed to claim a few times without any problems over the last 5 years or so. They sound very similar to this one & if i hadn't just renewed mine i would be looking at this to save a few pennies as mine costs £41.00 with all the extras...I would buy with confidance.

Took a punt with Smart.
16% cashback and guaranteed through imutual. Topcashback was a tad more, but can't be trusted. Not a great deal of cashback tbh, but took no chances.
Start rescue level 3 looks good for under £30.
Any personal experiences of when you need them?

Seems a good price if the company has good reviews. I use start rescue (similar t&cs) at around £30 a year and have been happy with them so far

Customer service is terrible. took them 5mins to answer phone & couldn't find my policy. said they ring back soon & didn't, so I called again and eventually found the policy. Then told it would take 1 & half hours to come and rescue me despite being broken down. You get what you pay for here & pray i don't need them again till i change the policy.

No it does not. Kwik fit policies start at 27 quid but the cheapest ones don't include either homestart or taking to destination
If "the garage" is closer than your home for example but you wish the car to be returned to your home. Since they agree to take you and your passengers home there would be little point "dropping" the car off first, taking you home & paying for your rail fare back to "the garage".
My guess would be the terms are there to mitigate their losses from excessive claims.

I don't understand your comment, although we may agree. 2gether do not "agree to take you and your passengers home" unless your (registered) home address is closer than your original destination or the nearest garage.

No, not all operators. For example, Autoaid t&c states they will take "the vehicle, you and up to 5 passengers to any one place you choose". Hence my suggestion for potential customers to acquaint themselves wilth service levels.

My daughter was tow trucked to a closed garage by RAC in winter months, who attended in lieu if Green Flag. I had to travel to collect her. They presumably must all do it. She would have been left 30 miles away by RAC on a trading estate. Criminal or what?

Wasn't a warning as such, just a suggestion to avoid any potential disappointment / frustration at a time of breakdown. And there is no ambiguity in the example we mention: any contractual recovery is to the nearest of those three options. I wouldn't be too comfortable having any of my motors taken to the nearest garage a) if it was outside usual working hours (useless!), b) I was obliged to pay whatever that garage deemed to be "reasonable" parts and labour charges, which may be far from reasonable.

Reasonable price. Worth a read of the t&c to avoid any unexpected service levels, such as the insurer's preference to defer recovery to "whichever is nearer" from options of suitable garage, orig destination or home address, plus no assistance after vandalism, no fuel, wrong fuel, etc. View t&c in browser here.

Seem,s to be some happy people. I am still with RAC but at 5 times this price - might run this alongside my remaining 6 months with them. Even 6 months for £19 would be good value. This dropped into my email box yesterday so hopefully code still working. Thanks squaredoggy and MikeT
