It's all about skin tone as opposed to age. 1 is the lightest, if fairly light tone, I wouldn't go more than 2 as you end up looking funny! Hope that helps a bit.

many thanks ordered shade 2. I ordered shade 1 last time (far too light looked like a ghost), so then ordered shade 3 which was a bit "orangey", so gone for shade 2 and hope thats just right!
