Got a Redmi3 from Aliexpress delivered fine but can't get it to connect to UK network, it won't recognise UK sim card. I am not a tech person (yet) so do I need to root it to get it to work or is something else going on? I really appreciate your advice.

Do not buy anything from Gearbest. I ordered a £150 gimbal from them on 1 January 2016 which got lost in the post but they still told me to wait until 15 February. I was promised that after 15 February the problem will be resolved to my satisfaction but now they are only offering me 100 dollars back as store credit. Flipping scamsters! Avoid like the plague.

.... they aren't the cheapest but by far the most reputable I've never had problem with these and have recommended to others and no complaints.
AliExpress fine for accessories but wouldn't get actual phone there.
Now the bootloader is locked these Malware issues should stop, it's why, they claim, they decided to lock them.
To be clear, it's not xiaomi or miui that's doing nasty stuff it's the dodgy vendors.
You're getting a bargain anyway I'd recommend the above vendors even at slightly higher cost

I bought a mi4c a couple of months back. I got ripped off because I bought from an eBay seller who claimed to have on-and stock in the UK. The seller then just drop shipped it from a China website like bang good.
The installed rom was a mess and full of nastiness. Upon googling the version number, I discover it was totally non standard, and installed by a reseller.
I had to install a custom recovery, format all partitions and install cm12.1.
Now it is a fine phone, but only thanks to me.
If you are not comfortable doing this stuff, then stick to a g4 or s6 at UK prices.

I was about to buy one before Christmas when I came across sites stating that resellers were adding malware to the rom and that apps such as Fun weather were infected with Trojans.
Thanks, currently the redmi 3 only has one stable Rom available.. This Rom on this phone doesn't have that option on security manager.
Others phones do. This doesn't.
Good info above, but not relevant to this phone on the *current shipped Rom *
This phone currently doesn't even have the eu Rom available, oh and the bootloader currently is locked and until they issue a new Rom, that's not going to change either.
It can be easily rooted, I have, it's easy but I'm just saying that it's not built in!
Qrunch
6 Feb 16#47
Root isn't on the stable roms.
You can root this phone easily but it's not built into the Rom by default
******
You just have to give permisions to the app that require Root acces.
Im totally new to Miui, just been with it for less than a week and by reading several threads over here i found all the info needed to know how to deal with root access.
I have my phone in spanish so i will try my best to tell you what to do.
First, go to SETTINGS - ABOUT THIS PHONE (at the botom of the menu) and click 7 to 10 times where MIUI VERSION appears. A notification will appear telling you that you have Admin privileges. This will give you SuperAdmin Acces. If you go now to SETTINGS -ADITIONAL SETTINGS (below child mode) you will see a new menu at the botom called DEVELOPERS OPTIONS (You will need it later on).
Some apps require to have the USB DEPURATION activated and the INSTALL UNSIGNED APPs Activated.
For the first one go to: SETTINGS -ADITIONAL SETTINGS (below child mode)-DEVELOPERS OPTIONS - activate USB DEPURATION.
For the second one go to: SETTINGS -ADITIONAL SETTINGS (below child mode)- SECURITY - activate UNKNOWN SOURCES.
Finally to give acces to apps that require so functionality just go to the SECURITY APP (not the menu but the app) and enter ROOT ACCESS, where you will se and modify all apps that have root access.
thanks very much for info , looked within that setting but still nothing about root !!!! ahhh driving me mad . I'm on miu 7 stable , perhaps I need to get the one you are using . thanks anyway

Not hidden at all on mine - it's a green app logo with a gold cross in a shield shape. It opens up the in-built cleaner, virus checker etc. And within the six options is "Permission" where you can control what autostarts, what permissions apps have and root access.
Are you running the same ROM - in this instance I did not import from China but bought of ebay. Running MIUI 7 Hermes 5.10.22 which is available on the web.

My mistake, you're right. I'm impressed with Xiaomi's phones, very underwhelmed by the incredibly confusing way they name the range....too many very similar models with too similar names IMO..

Well, root means you could find and disable /delete any apps hence I root and use titanium.
Apps that are Chinese aren't *automatically *Malware btw.
I've not found any Malware in miui in the years I've used it. Pointless Chinese bloat maybe but nothing sinister.
They include a virus app in the Rom, to be safe I use one of the non Chinese virus apps from Google play.
Also any app you don't know or like can have Internet access denied individually.

Malware in the bloatware. Some forums report Trojans in some of the apps and advise flashing the ROM.

Not true, BangGoods customer service is second to none, they just refunded me $65 to get a tablet repaired at a local shop. It was delivered with a touchscreen issue.
They offered to send me a screen out for self replacement (free of charge)
Ship the device back for a full refund.
1/3rd refund and pay for repairs myself.
Last year I bought a pair of cargo combats which had a busted zip, sent a photo of the zip and they gave me a full refund. I got zip replaced for £7 at a local haberdashery.
No other chinese e-tailer does this that I'm aware of. I do also buy from alieexpress since they're cheaper in general. But the customer service of BangGood make it worth the premium, specially if buying expensive devices. The cheap $1-5 shipping upgrade for DHL/Priority is nice too.

He was being pedantic, kinda. The phone does NOT have 16GB ROM, least I hope not...
There are a multitude of memory types, RAM,ROM etc all are different. RAM = Random Access Memory, ROM = Read Only Memory... a washing machine might have ROM but if a phone had ROM it wouldn't really work, since you couldn't save anything to memory.
The phone has a 16GB eMMC memory, 2GB ram and 16GB Storage.

are there any of these chinese units with a good gpu? 420 + or the good powervr etc?
But beware there are lots of versions of Xiaomi phones. AFAIK the Note 3 does NOT have a MIcroSD but does have a fingerprint scanner and a metal body. If you want MicroSD and don't care about fingerprint scanner, then go for the cheaper Note 2 prime
barbiegirl
5 Feb 16#16
I have Redmi Note 2 Prime. You don't need to root these phones do you? On mine (running MIUI7 Hermes 5.10.22) you simply go Security-->Permissions-->Root Access and just slide the slider to yes to allow root access for any app that has requested it.
I have to say that for the £140 I paid (all in) this is probably the best phone I've had. Removable battery, microSD, dual sim.
BTW - I think the screen is 1080p not 720. I think that's wrong in the spec. In fact I'm 99% sure it's wrong.

I'm sure I saw this for #92 on Aliexpress today. I'll be back...
Battery is good (assuming they aren't lying) but I'd expect 1080p at this price. Still, a low screen res will mean better battery life. Shame it will probably be superseded with the new model by the time it gets here (if it ever does with gearbest).
