Vodafone have reduced the price of the Smart Prime 6 to £49 (from £65) for the weekend.
No top-up is required, simply select 'Keep your existing SIM' at the bottom of the SIM bundle page (just prior to checkout).
The phone can be unlocked via code from ebay cheaply, but you will probably have to wait for 30 days from the day of purchase before the code is available, as the ebay sellers use the Vodafone database for their codes for this model.
Great for under £50:
5" HD (720p) IPS Touch Screen
Snapdragon 410 Quad Core Processor
4G-LTE
1GB RAM
8GB Storage + Micro SD slot
8MP Camera + 2MP FFC
Android 5.0.2 Lollipop + Stagefright fix

Talktalk have said they will assume this applies to all customers not just those who bought phones from them not 100% sure tho

TalkTalk have stated that they will work with Vodafone to help customers with locked phone switch to O2. They will only be helping customers who bought their phones direct from Vodafone prior to 2015 (prior to 2015 they were telling customers to buy phones that were unlocked or locked to Vodafone), and they haven't actually stated if "help" means a free unlock, or a one-off charge.
TalkTalk certainly won't be offering any free unlocks for phones bought in 2016, as all TalkTalk customers should already be aware of the switch over to O2.

So, like a 2nd Gen Moto G then ;-)

Damn this would've been a great phone if they put in more than 1gb of ram. It's basically like an OG MotoG with a 5" screen and sd card support. Would've been a decent marginal upgrade from a motog, but the ram is no better. 3 Years later.

The Smart Ultra 6 and Smart Prime 6 cater to two different types of buyer. People looking for a Smartphone for under £50 aren't likely to purchase a higher-spec one for more than double the price (SU6 currently £115).
I like the SU6, it represents good value for those after a phablet. For me though, it is far too big to use comfortably (impossible to use in one hand), the camera is poor compared to others in a similar price bracket (e.g. Moto G 3rd), the casing is cheap feeling, and the SD615 processor sometimes lags for no reason (stuttering when swiping through the launcher...etc).

I find 1gb of ram an absolute killer these days on phones ....you can run about 3 apps anymore and it starts choking to hell .still ok I guess for a wee backup phone

It used to have regular discount offers, that's how I heard about it!
But a much better phone all round, with very easy and cheap unlock codes all over eBay.
It's very much worth the extra.
Sometimes, cheap isn't always best, I learnt this clearly with the smart prime 6.
Both my boys have the ultra 6 and if my oppo 7 wasn't as good as it is, even now after nearly 2 years, I'd have an ultra 6.

Which eBay seller please, for the other users who buy this phone.
When I get home tonight, I'll list all the outlets I bought unlock codes from, with all the rejections. Well see if your seller matches with mine.

Is this really worth unlocking at £13.50 brings the total cost to about £62 pounds. Why not go for the Huawei Y6 for around £59, although that will require unlock too.

Rubbish. I've unlocked 3 of these phones now using Ebay. I have to admit though that prices have steadily increased since I started doing this.

No eBay unlockers work.
In fact no online code works, unless it's from Vodafone, who had to ask the manufacturer (Alcatel), as it is not in Vodafone database.
Budget £20 and a 30 day wait after activating on the Vodafone network for your unlock code.

Hi hapless,
Here’s an update on your request to unlock your phone so you can use it on a different network.
We are getting the code for you
We didn’t have the code on our database so we’ve asked your phone’s manufacturer for it.
Reference Number: ******!*!*
How long does it take?
It can take up to 10 working days from today for us to get the code from them. As soon as we do, we’ll email it to you – along with instructions on what to do next.
Thanks

And code was sent 5 days later. Worked fine.
This was after trying 6 eBay unlocks, and 9 online unlocks.
It can be unlocked by cable and furiousgold or sigmakey software, but finding an unlock shop with the software was nigh on impossible.
Wife is using it now, but ultra 6 is far superior, much better phone and very easy to unlock. Get that one instead.

It's all very well saying "get the ultra 6 instead", but that's more than double the price of this.

well its a very good phone and the smaller display / size may appeal to some people versus the ultra 6.. albeit as people said more expensive to unlock (the huawei y6 is another phone that is difficult/costly to unlock..)
the reduction in price helps, and if you add the unlocking cost it jumps back to the £60ish level which is ok for the specs..
if you buy put a screen protector on it.. theres been reports of the screen/glass being a bit on the fragile side..
