UV Torch going for just £4.99. Comes in really handy for finding dry stains and also really fun to play around with :). I haven't tried this but it turns out you can also use it to check if cash notes are real. Hope this helps :).

Shop around - a quick search on just amazon shows you can get a 9 led version for £1.29 delivered (possibly less) but you may have to wait while as they ship from Honmg Kong, China or Singapore depending on seller.
Or if you really want a 12 led version, I see that can be bought for £3.99 delivered (from China)
... or possibly as little as £2.03 delivered (again from the Far East) but not sure these lower cost sellers qualify

If you're gonna get one, please note that it's dangerous for your eyes.
In fact, it's just dangerous on you, full stop.
So try not to point it in your direction. UV radiation dangers are very real,
even if it's a seemingly harmless torch.
I remember getting a headache from a CSI UV lamp.
Use sparingly is my advice and away from your eyes and skin.:stuck_out_tongue:
I'm guessing its UV wavelength can also see invisible bank note marks?
Just like my CSI kit UV lamp. (It was a tube like lamp, not a torch.)
With my lamp however, I did not really see any invisible stains, bacteria, etc.
Maybe it was the wrong wavelength...or maybe some kind of chemical
stain is required to bond to invisible stains and become
visible under UV light, that way.
I dunno.:stuck_out_tongue:

Are they really that dangerous? Very similar to the UV lights you might see in museums etc on a bigger scale to make UV paint glow. Used to get 'em in night clubs and you'd see girls bras under their T shirts etc. That was just a black light - UV fluorescent tube.

You can see it although I suspect it's just visible light that we actually see. The torch probably emits a combination.

I got one of these (only bigger, with more LEDs) when I was toilet training the dog, and it's useless. Didnt show any wee stains on the carpet, even in pitch black and at close range. Tried it on the bedsheets and my underpants (which should have lit up like a firework) and nothing. I did shine it in my mouth though and saw that it made my false tooth (bridge) look black! So it does do something, but it doesn't help to find stains.
It depends if this torch is UV or black light, black light is what you get at museums, shows etc as it's safe to look at. It's the invisible side of UV you have to be careful with.

No it's a better LED than the old style cheapo ones used in this torch. Cree led's are like a plastic yellow. Just look for 18650 battery powered she uses those ones. But the torch police will come.along.and say the batteries explode and stuff. You will need a charger for the battery though. And having looked on that listing you would need to buy the battery. But you get the idea.
northwales
27 Jan 16#42
18650 can explode, seen it happen. decent quality ones will with circuit protection built it, to stop that from happening or use a decent charger. Use one of the cheap chargers and a unprotected cell, then it can overcharge and pop.
As for the 501b UV torch, I have that one and is a very good torch. The whole led and reflector drops out and you can buy blue, red, green and white modules to drop in.

Do not rely on this to detect fake UK banknotes because the wavelength will more than likely be wrong, you need a 365nm UV light but most of these cheapo UV lights are about 395nm so they barely illuminate the markings on a banknote even in total darkness.
With the correct 365nm UV that the bank of england recommend the banknotes security markings are very flouresent in most light.
These are handy if you're using LOCA - needed one recently when I modded my original Gameboy Color to have a frontlight.

Yes if it's genuinely a 365nm led bulb and not an ebay fake it will be perfect for detecting the hidden markings on UK banknotes and driving licences & passports.
A proper genuine 365nm led bulb really makes the hidden markings light up and glow.
You know if you have a good UV torch because to light output seems really poor because most of the light is in fact invisible to the human eye and is black light but once it shines on something that reacts with UV it glows very brightly, the new UK passport is extremely intricate and artistic under proper UV

I stand corrected but in my defence, (as a 63 year old) I was taught;
"Staines-upon-Thames is a suburban town on the River Thames in the borough of Spelthorne in Surrey, England. Before 1 April 1965 it was in the historic county of Middlesex." (Wiki)
I've now been suitably re-educated!
