I have this laptop. Its good. Fast, light, the touchscreen works well, and the battery life is pretty decent (6 hours roughly). Only complaint I have is the amount of crap Toshiba fills it with. I had to wipe it immediately to remove all the crap. Thankfully, it recognised the existing Windows 10 licence from the PC even after wiping the SSD so it automatically activated again.

Probably worth mentioning here, I purchased this laptop and when trying to add additional ram and increase the storage, it came to my attention that the laptop doesn't support user-ram upgrades! The ram was actually soldered onto the motherboard, so you're pretty much stuck with 8gb here!

Is the graphics good enough to handle that pretty easily? does it have the interfaces to do that?

Absolutely agree on this point. The organisation I used to work for had a supply contract with Toshiba, and the first thing we did as an IT department was wipe the hard drive and reinstall a clean copy of Windows - there's no need for these manufacturers to install all this bloatware and 3rd party rubbish.

Popped into Currys during my lunch break they had the 4K model on display, my that screen is lovely! The unit itself is small on par size terms nearly with Dell XPS 13 though 13 has the edge display and bigger screen in a similar sized body. Unit performed well with quick play, touch screen was responsive and touch pad seemed responsive. I'm tempted with the 4k screen but staying away due to poor battery life. I was settled on the Dell XPS 13 but might just have to trial this Toshiba out and see how I get on with it for day to day activities at this price point for an ultraportable you get quite a lot for the buck. Would love the Surfacebook but not at it's release prices!!

In regards to the M.2, I have been looking all over the internet for this ultrabook's user manual and service manual and I can only find small exerts of the ultrabook using a "sata SSD". Where abouts did you find out about it using an M.2?

huangxq2
15 Feb 16 #61
If you do not need an Ultrabook, I have seen quite few gaming laptops here with FHD at the same price range, but a lot higher specs on CPU, RAM, GPU.

Not sure if they have SSD, if they do not, they will have 7200rpm hard drive. You can always upgrade SSD yourself.

Gaming laptops and Ultrabooks are both good, they serve different purpose and have different customer bases.

I have not searched for gaming laptop, I do not know if there is a good gaming laptop deal here today.

15 Feb 16 #60
If you budget allow, go for it.

The good news is it has a M.2.

The bad news is its SSD is using the M.2.

You cannot put 2 hard drive/SSD in the Ultrabook.

The same is true on most if not all Ultrabooks.

256GB SSD is all you got. The performance will be fast. You could upgrade to 500/512GB M.2 SSD if you wish. But it will be a lot of money as M.2 SSD is more expensive than standard 2.5 inch SSD. £130 for 500GB Samsung Evo 850 M.2 SSD.

If you need to save a lot of large files, such as movies, you will have to use an external hard drive. Otherwise, 256GB run out quickly on FHD movies.

Yeah.

I have read that they redesign the XPS 15 now. The new version XPS 15 is much nicer than before. It is going to be as good as XPS 13 + a lot more powerful. Of course, it will be inevitably bigger and heavier given it is 2 inch bigger.

I have not seen the new version XPS 15 in person yet.

I have the version with the 4k screen and its a brilliant machine. Super light and powerful. If you look at Surface Pro 4 for similar specs you are talking over a grand. I always thought Toshiba laptops were a bit shabby in the past but this is a premium machine. I cant speak for the 1080p screen but the rest of it is knockout and with this model you will get much better battery life. Those who spoke about battery, bear in mind those reviews were of the 4k model which eats battery much more than 1080p.
huangxq2 to dkwookies
15 Feb 16 #58
The comment is fair. They were comparing 4K with 4K, FHD with FHD.

Comparing battery with 4K screen to with FHD would be unfair.

I think Toshiba Radius is a very good buy for the money. We cannot find another Ultrabook at the price given so much.

But the battery is behind the average, 5 hours for 4k, 7 hours for FHD. Just let the facts out.

It is good to hear opinion from someone owe the 4K version. I have heard people's comments on the FHD version, and only read reviews about the 4K version.

The idea is that you would replace the hdd with an ssd yourself (a far more useful "skill" than basic programming).

But I might also offer an alternative, a Chromebook? You install Linux to it and you are good to go. (Although maybe for a beginner Windows might be more friendly.)

But you might want to consider Lafitte at
pc.co.uk set it up with an i3 or Celeron some ram, install your windows from eBay and you can easily save 200£ on this. And if you put sm951 in it you will actually get a faster machine. I think scan is also offering customisable grafite 3xs 13 which would come out as 100£ cheaper than this if you install Windows yourself.

Honestly one of the worst preconceptions about computers is that it will be as fast as it's cpu, after all a car is as fast as it's engine is strong right? Wrong.

Computers function more on a basis of weak links, so it will be as fast as it's slowest component and these days this is rarely the cpu. In light of this I absolutely hate laptops coming with i5's and super slow 2TB drives, they are often simply capitalising on ignorance of buyers.

Anyway sorry for the rant. Programming is basically just writing text, it requires virtually 0 resources. The bit when you go compiling the code and actually testing the program can be more cpu intensive, but unless you multithread (which based on what you suggested doing, you are not going to do) this is a very much single core process and usually really, really fast on almost any processor.

For the scientific calculator, just binary search everything, you can easily get crazy precision in good time. But point taken if you want precision of up to 100000 digits then it would help, but in my opinion if you do, it won't make enough of a difference to be worth it. You would also need to do fast fourier transforms to at least stand a chance of working with those precisions.

Reviews all say Radius has bad battery life.

If you plan to be out of house for a whole day and only charge when you get back home/hotel, this is not for you. 4k screen last 5 hours, FHD last about 7 hours below average performance.

You can find the model just with a different specs, like 4k screen instead of FHD.

Reviews said the 4K screen is really good, and compare it to XPS 13.

Other people who bought the i5 version before confirmed the FHD screen is good.

Generally, a lot of Ultrabook at this price tag has bad screens, such as, Lenovo U31, HP Envy 13.

Whereas, Zenbook UX305/303, HP Spectre x360, and Toshiba Radius have good screens.

XPS 13 have very good screen, but price is a lot more.

Probably the only game I'll play is team fortress 2 and possibly sims 3 or 4. But nothing more than that as I'm not really a pc gamer.

I've been looking at buying a laptop for creating simple programs, such as calculator, Coffee shop menus, etc woould it be preferable to buy an i7 over an i5?

this would only be used once / twice weekly at most whilst I'm out and about otherwise I'll be using the desktop at home.
Sunni to babybanana
15 Feb 16 #17
For those requirements an i5 would be fine.
Nexusfifth to babybanana
15 Feb 16 2 #36
For those requirements a decent celeron would be just fine, let alone an i5/i7.

Also this is not a "low-end" i7 because it is dual-core, it is simply an ultrabook version which has different priorities. (Such as longer battery life and silent operation.) Also as most tasks are still very much single core and this has comparable or even better single core performance than the quad cores it is often faster.

The quad cores do have their purpose though, more and more games are capable of utilising multiple cores (relatively) meaningfully and the main uses are video editing, running virtual machines etc, but for such uses you would usually go for a proper gaming workstation machine in the firstplace.

My point is these are not "low-end" i7's or bad processors by any means...

15 Feb 16 2 #33
I use XPS 13.

I think compare to this Ultrabook, everything is improved including look, smaller size and larger screen, slimness, weight, battery, overall quality.

This is not to dismiss the Toshiba though. It is good and with good screen only cost half of XPS 13.

There is not many choice of Ultrabook at half cost of XPS 13 and still have good screen. Zenbook UX305 is similar money and good screen too, but processor is weaker and no backlit keyboard.

So this Toshiba is a good buy too. Which one to go depends on your budget and how much do you value those little improvements.
huangxq2
15 Feb 16 1 #32
There is no such thing, you do not need to try to find.

There is no XPS 13 with 6700HQ. That will just drain down the battery, and too much heat for the small frame.

Only the newest XPS 15 has the option of 6700HQ. The screen size do not fit your requirement.
xenononon
15 Feb 16 #31
You don't get it. It allows one to get to this level of portability and also battery life. The HQ versions may be more powerful and have more cores but they are horrendous on both fronts, that's why they don't make them in these form factors.

Unless you think it'll be beneficial to get a i7 now? I'm not one of those people who does trades in for a newer model so I'll probably run it to the ground getting at least (hopefully) 3+ years usage on it.

Very very little. Especially if you need to ask (it means you are not doing things where you would use full power of the cpu as if you did, you would know).

Honestly even the benchmarks are couple of hundred apart (less than 5%) and cpu is mostly not the main factor in the speed of a machine these days. (unless you buy under i3 and even then it is mostly other stuff that bottlenecks)

Save yourself 50£ and get an i5
