Packing in a 3D, 4K screen and one of the smartest operating systems about - Android TV - the Sony KD55X8509CBU demands a closer look.

4K Ultra HD TV b the ultimate in detail
With its revealing screen resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels, the Sony KD55X8509CBU is ready for the 4K UHD revolution. The resolution is four times greater than conventional 1920 x 1080 Full HD, and it's a difference you'll really notice. The gain in resolution is especially visible and even close up, the detail and realism are awesome. Even other resolutions, thanks to Sony's X-Reality PRO 4K technology, are upscaled to near 4K standard.

Triluminos display and Motionflow XR1000Hz
As well as 4K, this Sony TV also boasts a Triluminos display, developed to produce truer, deeper and more natural shades of colour, with skin shades appearing far more natural. It's also fitted with Motionflow XR 1000Hz, which works especially well with fast moving action, such as sports events, removing the blur you can see with standard TVs. From a Hollywood blockbuster to a Formula One race, XR1000 makes a significant difference.

Active 3D for a thrilling experience
Once you've experienced 3D TV, ordinary TV just never seems quite the same. Images aren't just projected forward but appear to occupy the space behind the screen, too. Thanks to 3D active processing, the Sony KD-L55X8509CBU offers breathtaking levels of detail and realism.

Android TV
Offering the slick interaction of the best smartphones, Android TV is one of the smartest content managers and providers to date. Boasting features such as Google Cast, Google Play and Voice Search, this Sony is part TV and part giant smartphone.

Voice Search and One Flick Entertainment
Even with such a massive range of content, finding what you want is always easy. Voice Search means you simply say what you're looking for and let Android TV find it for you. Alternatively, one-flick entertainment gives effortless control of search functions via simple swipes on the remote's touch pad. Best of all, you can control all the major functions without your TV viewing being interrupted - thanks to the discreet pop-up menus.

Bass reflex speakers and Signal to Sound architecture
Although no match for a home cinema system or soundbar/base, the Sony KD55X8509CBU's sound system is one of the better ones. With bass reflex speakers, it offers a deeper and more powerful sound than you might expect. The digital Signal-to-Sound Architecture processing system includes technologies such as S-Force Front Surround for a more spacious sound, while Clear Phase produces a more natural sound quality.

If you're torn between the visual thrills of 3D and 4K TV then worry no more; with the Sony KD55X8509CBU you've got them both - and a lot more besides!

Refurbished models are products returned to Sony under the following circumstances: change of mind, faulty out of box, box damage or minor cosmetic imperfections. After reading the reviews i dont think i shall be buying one customers who have left reviews in January say that the latestest firmware hasn't fixed the issues and its next to use less, i suspect that Sony will have a lot of these sets to shift.

Sony are really poo when it comes to customer services . Well in my case my ps4 wouldn't turn on if I put it in rest mode to download updates ect? So I sent it for repair sony sent my faulty ps4 back saying they could not find the fault so they could not fix it ?? So now I'm sending it back for the 3rd time I'm supposedly being sent a brand new unit. But it won't come in a ps4 box or have any leads or controller. So basically there sending another reconditioned unit? Like I say the customer service is absolutely useless

I bought one of these last year from JL for £999 but with 5 year guarantee. However, as many have done I sent it back- as was disappointed. The panels are hit and miss and I found the OS really annoying. I know some seem to be happy so must be again a bit of a lottery as to whether you get a good one or not. The big problem I found out living with it for a week was ( as akin to most 4K tv's ) is they do not upscale standard freeview or std DVDs at all well- not as good as my Full HD Sony. At the moment there's still not enough 4K material - at least what I want to watch, available, so still feel I did the right thing in sending it back.

I have this tv, and I love it now that It has been updated to sort out the majority of the major issues. it is an impressive tv. sure the os throughs a wobbly every now and again, but just about every android device has these type of issues now and again.

I would imagine these tvs will be pretty much brand new, as loads of these were returned after a few days due to the issues. I almost returned mine a few times, but I'm glad I didn't. I had a problem since the beginning where the sound would drop for a second every minute or so, when outputting to surround sound system via hdmi. figured out a few days ago it was the hdmi cable that was faulty.

POSITIVES
• Triluminos Display for realistic, vibrant colors
• Excellent price for a Sony 4K TV
• Social Viewing feature
• Excellent connectivity options
• Full Smart TV functionality with numerous apps
• Compatible with all major streaming media platforms
• Compatible with Sony Video Unlimited 4K video service

NEGATIVES
• Edge—lit LED lighting instead of full-array LED backlighting
• Lacks Extended Dynamic Range
• Blacks on screen are bluish and hazy at times
• A bit thick for a 4K TV
• There are cheaper 4K models with the same size and full-array LED backlighting

I had this TV from John Lewis for 2 days but then returned it. The design is beautiful, but when viewed in an angle the colors disappear and become gray. I had a Sony Z2 mobile that had the same issue. Android TV as an OS is a good start but nothing can compete with LGs WebOS at the moment. If you are not too fussy about viewing angles then it could be a great deal, I think.
Deedie to murcielagone
25 Feb 16 #49
what sort of angle are we talking here. due to the layout of my living room, no matter were you sit your viewing this tv at an angle, and its been great. it replaced an older hx803 bravia that I always had to swivel the screen around when using it. the viewing angle on this tv is night and day in comapison

25 Feb 16 #45
what if you don't care about firmware as you won't be using the built in features and just using what you plug in. My point is what do you who own it think of the picture. What's it's input lag lag gaming what's it like when football is on any phosphor trails?
Deedie to grahamchalker
25 Feb 16 1 #50
for gaming its excellent. also got a vu+ solo 4k satellite receiver plugged into it. the astra 4k test channel is excellent, the hd channels that I get are excellent. sd channels on the other hand are not great, but not too bothered about that. not used the built in sat tuner, so cant comment on that, but apparently its pretty limited. no twin tuner setup, even though it has 2 tuners. apparently coming before 31st march, but subject to change apparently.
Bisham to grahamchalker
26 Feb 16 1 #60
Firmware for this TV is relevant as it affects the whole Android OS and apps system, e.g. remote unresponsive and lagging changing channels, issues with HDMI connected devices requiring reboots, lipsynch issues, not playing 5.1 sound formats for Netflix, etc, to name a few. However, apparently latest updates have fixed most issues and just HDD recording and PIP/PAP to be applied now. Picture-wise it's one of the best in its price range and motion is handled well, with no phosphor trails as its an LCD panel not plasma.

Got mine yesterday evening. Love the TV. Very thin bezel. Only issue so far I've found is that sometimes the lip sync on some youtube videos isn't the best. That said it could easily be down to an individual movie. I watched a movie on Wuaki on the TV last night and no issues at all.

Would love to see a Flixster app for Android TV but that isn't a problem with the TV itself

I have owned this tv for 6 months and i can honestly say that it is brilliant and anyone buying will be happy especially at that price. Even before the firmware updates I was not disappointed and personally I couldn't understand why there were so many negative comments and reviews. The fact it has android built in and you can run kodi on it is really the icing on the cake.

These models are a lot of TV for your money. However, might be worth having a quick skim through the 60 pages of the owners thread on AV Forums - https://www.avforums.com/threads/sony-kd-x850-c-owners-thread.1963228/ - as no doubt you're getting a refurbished unit that probably someone on there has returned for various reasons. Good luck as it seems to be a bit of a panel lottery.

They'll be another one back on the system soon. I bought another to be guaranteed at £549, they intend to cancel this and honour the £549 price refunding the difference. Distance selling regs was my reason for purchasing a second as I could just have returned the first for refund. The latest firmware was already installed. It looks like it's a hardware issue so will have to go back. Hopefully that won't be too much hassle!

Just got a reply back from Sony Centre saying they can't refund £50.

Oh well.. was worth a try

Thank you for your e-mail and your recent purchase from Sony.

I can confirm that the correct price of the TV you purchased is £599.  Which is the price you paid.

Unfortunately there was a glitch on the website which caused this product to be displayed at an incorrect price and any orders placed during this time where not processed at checkout.  This issue was quickly resolved and the item was returned to the correct price.

Therefore we are unable to honour your request of a refund as the price was correct when you purchased it and it was also correct before becoming sold out.

Bungle2 to 666bandit666
11 Mar 16 #166
There's a fair chance that the batteries have leaked on the contacts, if you scrape the residue off it might start working again. Not that you should be having to fix this type of thing ofcourse, just trying to help in case you don't want to send it back. Pretty bad of Sony to be sending them out in that condition tho!

15 Mar 16 #190
I ordered this the last time it was in stock and our email said the wolves store too (we live in dudley). I called them up to ask if i could collect it from the store but they said stock comes from the sony warehouse, the store name seems to be who "handles" the order.

I unboxed ours last night. Very happy with it for the £549 we paid. The updates take a while, like 30-40mins.
mariolj
14 Mar 16 #189

nowtbeta2do
15 Mar 16 #191
I was the same but our TV was in perfect condition, no scratches, no scuffs, no finger marks even. It was re-packaged in a generic box but packed properly. I rang the sony store on the receipt after ordering and the chap said the majority of stock was customer returns due to os issues. Firmware updates seem to have sorted that.

Our 2 yr old smashed our 8 year old kdl40w4500 (god rest its soul), he threw a toy spanner at it (oh the irony/coincidence). This fitted our criteria perfectly, 4k, 3D, and most importantly HDR. Good reviews too.

Hope that helps.

15 Mar 16 #197
It can handle HDR but this TVs brightness peaks at around 330cd/m2 whereas "proper" HDR TVs brightness peaks at over 700cd/m2.

I'd like to call it HDR Lite
spritey to Vegeta
16 Mar 16 #200
Correct - this TV does not meet the specification for Ultra HD Premium.

An LCD-LED TV actually needs to meet the following specification to be certified;

More than 1000 nits peak brightness and less than 0.05 nits black level;

An OLED peak brightness can be lower (540nits) as it can get to a much lower black level than LCD-LED.

It's one of the main reasons i resisted.. I'm still on a 55" Samsung 1080p LCD-LED. As 4K, HDR and OLED is going to be the main "Must have" upgrade reasons for many years to come (As 8K is going to be long long way off and arguable in the same vein as 4K, not worth it unless youre over 65"). It makes more sense to splash out more and have a set i wont need to upgrade for 5+ years.

20 Mar 16 #218
Had a chance to give mine a bit of a test now. Everything seems to be working, except mine seems to have this problem with unresponsive remote control, weirdly this is only on the picture setting menus etc, ie it doesn't happen in an app such as YouTube or Amazon . This screams software bug to me but I thought they had fixed all this by now. I ran the update to the latest firmware v3.315 so seems weird to still have intermittent remote responsiveness on the menus. Has anyone else seen this issue on their sets?
AJ92 to Bungle2
20 Mar 16 #219
I don't have this TV but I do have 2x 3D, 1x 4K Sony Androids and I have had the issue a few times but it works again within 5minutes so it doesn't bother me much. There has been occasions where it's been more than 5 minutes and nothing happens so I just unplug from the wall and then back in but that's very rare for me.
Bungle2
20 Mar 16 #220
Thanks for this, I tried a factory reset after the firmware upgrade earlier, and this seems to have sorted it. So I guess it was just something that was left over after the upgrade, or that didn't complete quite fully. Anyway it hasn't lagged on remote input since.

got mine today, it has silver/mirror stand rather than dark chrome but it don't bother me. Easy to set up, first thought touch pad remote doesn't work but realise you need to pair it up. TV reset it self once but run smooth after that. Picture is truly amazing, so far very happy with it
tom6195 to mariolj
23 Mar 16 #228
What kind of condition is yours in mate?
tom6195
22 Mar 16 #226
Just set mine up, also came with a silver chrome stand as opposed to a dark one but not too fussed about this.

Noticed a very minor surface scratch on the screen after much inspection but doesn't look to be affecting the actual operation of the set and couldn't see it when watching any tv shows or cricket.

Still fiddling with the picture settings does anyone have any recommended ones? Ta.

Been thinking .. What are the chances of this tv coming down in price later in the spring?

IIRC the 55W829 came down to £649 last May at John Lewis ... I'm tempted to return mine and wait a few more months in hope of a JL deal.
mariolj
23 Mar 16 #230
Mine is in brand new like condition, no marks or scratches, bit dirty and glue residues at the back but wiped it and it's fine. This is a first time I have purchased refurb ever and must admit was bit sceptical but so far so good. For this price I think it was a bargain.
tom6195
23 Mar 16 #231
Which store handled your purchase mate?
tom6195
23 Mar 16 #232
Mine came in the original box and shrink wrap and I also had to wipe the screen down thoroughly.

Unfortunately I did find a very faint surface scratch probably the length of your index finger which wouldn't come out with any wiping with a microfibre cloth.

Aside from this I'm really loving the picture quality from this set
