Looks like a good deal for a decent quality 50" Sony 3D smart TV.

Seems to be around £600 at Currys

OP, I love you! Only in a manly bargain hunter sort of way, obviously.

OK its not 4K, but other than that it seems perfect for my needs. I've not got a 4K source anyway and the problem is that I'd have probably spent £900 on a 55" 4K TV and all the time after wish I had an OLED.

So with this deal OK its a bit smaller, and not 4k - but in a few years when OLED becomes de-facto standard and cheap I can buy one without the "but you paid £900 on a TV not long ago" from Mrs B
Lupeto to Batch_2001
26 Feb 16 #46
I think you've just covered a lot of my reasoning

If I went 4k for £600, I knew I'd get a pretty poor panel, whereas with this, it should be a pretty good performing panel for a bargain price. I think I'm going to get a lot of enjoyment out of mine; I hope you do too!

Received this morning and setup. Can't find much wrong with it so far. Have been playing with settings and getting better all the time. The installed software on mine is PKG.2.645.0052 is anyone is interested. Declined offer to update software, at least for a bit until I see how things pan out.

One annoyance is that you register for YouView during set-up and then YouView takes over you set eg. when you turn on TV or change channels Youview appears. Must be easy way of turning it off.

UPDATE Home/Settings/Channel Settings/YouView settings/Disable YouView.

Mine is on its way. If it comes and it has dead pixels. Is it covered by the warranty to get it fixed?
Dinger42
1 Mar 16 #102
One dead pixel detected on mine, but otherwise appears perfect. Seems to be a theme developing here that these are dead pixel returns sets. But as the number of duff pixels is still less than warrant threshold which I think for Sony is around five or a grouping cluster, the returns are just being labelled reconditioned and reselling to get shot. I can certainly live with a dead pixel given the significant saving.

Anyone have clouding on there's? I have 1 dead pixel and clouding....
Dinger42 to reabo101
2 Mar 16 #121
What do you mean my clouding; is it associated with image movement? Can I ask have you had a TV this large before, no matter how clever the picture clean up electronics with TVs of this size the SD picture is always going to look very poor up close. On mine the HD picture is brill really sharp but the SD picture is dreadful with artifacts around moving objects including faces. The 'optimal setting' boffins will tell you to turn off all the 'noise reduction' options in Picture setup which makes the HD picture as pure and good as you can get, but the payback is poor SD interpretation.

When on a black or dark screen i can see patches on the bottom right and in the middle. I didnt really noticed it but the wife pointed it out and now I can see it. Tv previous was 42 inch flat screen and never any problems. Its 5 years old.
Dinger42
2 Mar 16 1 #123
Sounds like Backlight Breeding patches which these LEDs are unfortunately prone to. It should not be a problem in a well lit room, but you can try turning down the Back Light setting in the advanced Picture Settings which should help, but you may need to up the Contract to near max and up the Brightness a bit to compensate.

Anyone worked out how to get 3d working on there tv? I have no 3d button on my remote and its not clear at all how to activate it.

I have a digital version of mad max 3d and it just plays side by side. My glasses connect to the tv though...

I don't mind the wait so much, its the lack of communication. No emails. No calls just to say 'Mr G, we're looking into this' etc

Yup.

I did email Bath Sony Centre, who gave me the "its shipped and should be with you within 3 days" line. I imagine its the standard fob off for all central orders though.

3 Mar 16 #143
Just got a call from the Manager who firstly apologised for the delay, explained he had 'rollocked' the staff! Anyway, the set is coming from a different warehouse, and I'll have a better idea on Monday when it will be shipped.

At least I dont have to worry about being in for next couple of days for an order that isnt arriving!
Batch_2001
3 Mar 16 #144
I honestly don't think the high street Sony Centres themselves have much more of an idea than us!

The order comes from a central pool (the other warehouse) - this is the thing that is letting the side down. There doesn't seem to be any way of contacting them. My gripe is that while they have the cash, so they should at least let us know whether this is a small delay, OOS and no chance of getting it, or something else.
Gollywood to Batch_2001

This is what I focussed on. I said 'You've taken my money so I'm entitled to ask questions about the order'. I was assured the set was earmarked for me & I will get it.

7 Mar 16 #174
Disappointing. Do you think its transit damage or liberal use of the term "refurb"?
Batch_2001
7 Mar 16 #175
I hear you. As I said earlier, the TV I received had a crack in the back rendering it a) difficult/impossible to wall mount, b) I'm unsure of its electrical safety - could be fine but ..In any case I'm also returning. Again no real sign of transit damage to the box, a slight scoring on the back side. But I can't believe they'd send them out in that state as "refurbished"..

At least Sony centre Bath seem decent. Not sure its in their hands though.

Will try a replacement if one is in the offing as I really want the TV, but I'd certainly think twice of buying like this again. I mean the TVs come from Sony Europe (via Sony centre) not Arthur Daley's lockup, you expect a scratched back or frame - not this.

Anyway, would appreciate it if you could post back if/when they contact you with return instructions - didn't hear anything today...

Just got a polite email from Bath , main points are
1. No more stock as yet, so refund (unless they come in)
2. They (Sony Central) will arrange collection "soon". refund 7 days thereafter
3. They are reviewing their packing procedures to reduce future delivery transit damage.

Gutted, really wanted the TV. Hey ho. Not happy about "soon" though - I'll be asking them to make sure it happens next week or I'm disputing the charge with my CC.

oh, and my CC statement correctly lists the transaction as "centres Direct" - which is as expected. To be fair, in their small print somewhere they do say they just licence the Sony name from Sony for Sony Centre use....

Also, if the bath store are monitoring this thread, Hi Ranjit.

Hi,

The only thing that I have noticed with the TV is that occasionally when I switch it on there is no sound and the Sony TV remote becomes unresponsive as well as the actual standby buttons etc on the TV unit itself but the TV is still displaying a normal picture on the Sky channel and the Sky channels can be changed with the Sky remote but no volume at all. Switching the power off at the wall switch and then back on seems to work but this is happened about 3 times over the last few days, anyone experienced something similar?

After my order I got a text and email confirming my delivery slot for the Monday morning between 11.15am and 12.15pm. The driver turned up at 8.30am on Saturday.
UK Mail doesn't appear to have an incredibly accurate system.

UK Mail came back today at about the same time as yesterday. Same bloke. No receipt left with me. He just stuck a label on it and off he went. 2 hours later i got 2 texts telling me it would be collected 2 hours ago. Hopeless really.
I'm giving them a week to get the money back to my account. Mine is off to Yusen Sony in Wellingborough i beleive.
Seriously people, anyone considering this deal, and used to the Amazon returns process etc, be aware that you are dealing with a rabble, not worthy of handling Sony products. This whole thing does not refelect well on Sony at all.

16 Mar 16 #209
No idea. Apparently UK mail turned up at work Monday with no contact details about what the parcel was, whome they were collecting for, etc.

Could have been for the TV..

Yesterday I got two texts they were coming but no actual date, just times. Today another one that they are collecting between 8-9 pm. Yeah OK then.

They have tomorrow then it's credit card time, complaint to Sony, etc (it's their name if not directly selling it).

No collection here. Can't get UK mail reference number, can't speak to anyone. Sent ukmail a message via 'contact us'.

Morale: never order from the centresdirect website. Go to the Sony centre and do it from them.

18 Mar 16 #214
Well, my original set arrived in perfect physical condition but had an internal issue so I arranged a return.

My replacement set arrived this morning and appears to be 1000% OK, the delivery company also picked up the original faulty set.

My delivery company was dx delivery, the only minor gripe was that they only deliver mon-fri so I had to take two days off work.

I'd definitely buy another refurb from Sony centres, though I imagine I won't need to for several years now.

Batch_2001
31 Mar 16 1 #219
Thought I'd update this one final time:

centresdirect: UK mail finally picked up the TV last Monday, absolute shambles. No contact whatsoever, don't know if they've got it yet back yet (should have). No refund received yet. No paperwork from UK mail, just a text. Placed charge into dispute with credit card people. Need to wait 14 days before charge is removed (hopefully it''ll be sorted before then).

Bath Sony Centre: Absolutely superb. Helpful (as possible due to centresdirect central being crap), patient, to the point that I placed a separate refurb order through them. It was delivered yesterday (did pay £10 but worth it as parking in Bath=horrible), in A1 condition, working great so far! They'd tested it over the weekend too to make sure all was well. Can't fault them and would happily buy through this route again - shame it wasn't obvious you could do this first off.
