I was in the John Lewis in Glasgow yesterday and they had a number of Sonos products reduced in their electricals clearance section.
This double pack of Play:1 speakers seemed like the best deal although they had them for sale individually for £139 and the Play:5 (old version I think) for £349. These things don't usually drop in price much so work checking your local John Lewis if you're in the market for one (or two!).

As usual a lot of people feel the need to bash these probably because they feel they need to as either they can't afford them or the fact a lot of people sing Sonos' praises irks them. A Play1 is not meant to be an amazing high end audio setup and won't rival even a modest separates setup. The Play5 and Connect ranges are designed for that comparison. A Play1 and to some extent Play3 are fit anywhere play anything devices for small rooms (especially a single Play1). A Play1 in the corner of a small kitchen for instance is an application not a pair trying to fill a large lounge. So those listening to these in the shops, please understand the range in full first! As an Av professional I advise people to always think of how Sonos units can be integrated into 'better' setups in rooms where it really matters but also how undeniably flexible some of the units can be where you need them to be. For instance I have a connect amp driving a pair of B&W ceiling speakers in my Kitchen because IMHO that gives the best convenience and quality in that type of room. I have another driving a pair of Bose Marine speakers outside, but I have a Play5 to use in other areas of the house where a shelf based speaker is ideal (guest room or study for instance).

all streaming is via the free Sonos app. in the app one of the sources is 'stream from this device'. for other services spotfiy etc you add them into the app.

the real benefit of doing this is when multiple people use the speakers, all people using the Sonos app on your network can see what is currently being played and have access to each other's services

I know this sounds ridiculous but I just don't get how these work?! I have an iPhone 6, iPad air and an older iPod touch (second generation I think) which I currently use with a decent docking speaker. Does this just stream, wirelessly, from the iPod touch? Also have a SONY Dolby TrueHD Amp - can I connect it to that? (and if so, is there any need to?) Thanks for the help.
Just to Broadsands
31 Jan 16 #7
Your iPhone 6 and iPad air can stream wirelessly music stored on them or select from music stored on computers/laptops/network drives. In short anything storing music files on your network can be selected as a file source and played back through these.

Ah later I will dig out what I've said previously about multi room audio. You already have pretty much everything you need to build a multi room system using logitech media server. Maybe a raspberry pi To connect to the amp and that's it. You can install a small app on your touch to turn that in to a player.

If you can't wait just Google my username + hotukdeals and multi room audio and I'm sure you'll find it. The raspberry pi setup is a doddle now; don't let any old posts scare you of you aren't tech savvy.

if you dont have a pc. you just put them on your network wired from the router. then get the Sonos app as your Idevices are already on your router just follow the Sonos set up. will not work on 3and4G mobile network. thats the basic setup (you only need to put one on your router you can pair them with your phone)

No, these are separate from anything else really, they stream direct from the web or an internal network share like a NAS. You can use the iPhone and iPad as remote controls though. The play one is an all in one speaker and streamer and doesn't have line out so you can't connect it to anything.
We have a few of these around the house and they are great streaming from my wife's Spotify account and my Deezer and home collection on my Mac mini. We can control from her Android or my iPhone

Download the Sonos App to Device
Add Music Services
Example :
On this Mobile Device
Deezer
Spotify
Google Play Music
Radio by Tunein
etc
Choose a room to stream to, in my case :
Lounge (2 x Play 1s)
Conservatory (1 x Play 1)
Bedroom (1 x Play 3)
Or stream different music to different rooms at the same time
Plus can be controlled by any device in any room ie start music in the lounge, then stop it on another device in the bedroom
Fantastic bit of kit, two Play 1's in a medium size lounge sound amazing!

edit : sorry missed SpoonyBoy's comment #13 pretty much as he said...

If you have a Play 5 or a Connect then you can plug an Airport Express into the Line In and AirPlay to that and it'll come out on all Sonos speakers that you have. Personally I find using the Sonos app much more stable than AirPlay.

Yes because PC World is definitely the right place to judge the sound of audio equipment.
The Sonos gear sounds fantastic and this is from someone who has some pretty high end audio gear.
For anyone on the fence, the Play 1 really does sound good - even in mono, but obviously better in a stereo pair.
I have 3 dotted around the house and wouldn't be without them.

1 Feb 16 #48
My initial point I was making before all these 'hacks' to get something as simple and common as Airplay working was Sonos have the massive disadvantage of not supporting Airplay thus not allowing me and others to play music from their iTunes match library, no mention of streaming from a NAS or leaving a PLEX server running 24/7

I do, if you'd have read my post I already have a Play 3 but unfortunately cant use it with Airplay so I use a Pioneer multizone system instead.

The point was why does this premium priced product not support Airplay when all other manufactures do? the reason is they stubbornly make you use their app only.

1 Feb 16 1 #54
SONOS if fantastic. Only problem is it gets addictive!, you end up wanting a 'zone' in every room.

The play 1 is gorgeous and this is a great price for the stereo pair.
I use GPM for around £8.50 a month, I have uploaded all my music to their server.

Been with SONOS for about 6 years now started with one Play 5 and went from there.
You can 'airplay' if you have a SONOS with 3.5mm line in input and 'Airport Express' (Play 1 & 3 dont have line in factility unfortunately an oversite by SONOS).
JohnnyUtah to deany76
1 Feb 16 1 #66
Not an oversite but simple marketing to ensure more money is spent on the "premium" features i.e. line in of the play 5.

If you dare not want to spend the extra for a play 5 and go with 2 x 1's the extra £250 is required for a Connect for a line in.

The Chromecast audio is if you already have a Hi-Fi system or line in on speaker and want to add convienient functionality of streaming from your android device.

I use iphone and the apps store gives a fairly poor review Chromecast by Google, Inc.
https://appsto.re/gb/-WhLO.i
so I guess its aimed more for android users.

Connectivity may be okay but the sound quality isn't good enough for the price. I tried a set out in Currys and found that the bass was not warm and deep enough and the tops were not as crisp as I'd expect. To stream wirelessly from my bluetooth devices (phone, iPad etc.), I got a Karman Hardon wireless adaptor from Richer Sounds for £50. It plugs into the back of my existing hifi and lets me play tunes from my mobile via bluetooth through the awesome power and clarity of my old Technics amp and Tannoy speakers.

This is what annoys me about Sonos. I'm sure their speakers are just fine, but I think it would be a waste to replace my dumb (but very good) speakers.

Unless if the Sonos speakers really blow my current setup out of the water, I would rather just put the wireless tech on my current speakers. I guess that's why the Chromecast audio exists now...
paulj48

That's you problem there, Bluetooth uses compression and a limited bandwidth and gives less that great audio quality.

The Sonos CONNECT - The Wireless Hi-Fi (formerly ZP90) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001G7PLTQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_30ZRwbV62FH9M
would be what you would try, & amazon give you no quibble 28 day return. Fair bit more than the Chromecast but if you have a streaming subscription a strong unlimited (ideally) broadband connection, you will get better quality with this SONOS setup.

Tidal also do High Resolution.

Trouble is when used with an digital optical link to your amplifier (as in the case with an AV amp) you'll find the audio will be out of sync with any other Sonos speakers on the same network.
MiL0
1 Feb 16 #63
you can always use the analogue outputs.
paulj48
1 Feb 16 #64
bit of a cop out don't you think when we're talking high quality audio, digital sources and a premium priced product. A sync option in the software should have been provided.
deany76
1 Feb 16 #65
HI

You wouldn't need a 'digital optical link' with a Sonos CONNECT it does it all for you, unless you are referring to a TV setup (I'm not familiar with TV setups) and you can add zones as time goes by all in sync.

But like I say _music only_ I rarely watch TV so am referring to listening to music via SONOS not TV audio around the house, which I can't really see the point, maybe I'm misunderstanding you.

Cheers

ps
you do need a 'digital optical link' if connecting to apple TV line in to SONOS (and this is a bit flakey) better with airport express, music only.

Really good speakers. At this price I would definitely advice those sitting on the fence to just go for it! The multi-room wireless controlling from any device becomes second nature after a day. It makes using other kinds of bluetooth & Wi-Fi speakers seem a bit archaic.

paulj48
1 Feb 16 #69
Think your misunderstanding what the Connect does. Its to add the 'Sonos' ecosystem to your existing amp/speakers. The major flaw is the digital link out of the Connect doesn't allow the sync to be controlled, yes you could use analogue out instead but come on if digital is available why not use it.

OnlineLady
1 Feb 16 #71
One of the flaws of this ecosystem (I'm a big Sonos fan by the way) is that no other speaker can naturally come and play. It would be awesome if Sonos licensed this brilliant technology - that surprisingly works like a charm with Wi-F- when even the latest smartphones have hiccups. Imagine buying the latest Sony Hifi and having it work via the Sonos Contoller, etc. Granted Sonos would probably charge a hefty fee for the privilege.
riskyb

They did confirm it was reduced to £249 so the deal was legitimate, albeit very short lived.

Another flaw I'd always wondered, what would happen if Sonos went out of business, would every speaker (apart from the ones with line-in) become unusable?

Great piece of kit, People tend to miss the main appeals: Multiroom and the fact it works (and ease of use).

Coming from the IT world I love to tinker, Look how well the MicroServer always do on HUKD, Make it into a HTPC/NAS/Media Server but does the other half or family use it... No because its too much faffing about/complex.

Sonos is literally as simple as download the app and start playing, I had set my first Play1 up with Google Play Music, TuneIn Radio and Amazon Music. My fiance while I was out downloaded the app connected to the Sonos and the music services then show to her (As they are registered on the device itself) I return home to her playing her own "playlist".

She usually wouldnt have a clue and since then weve added more as they genuinely get used and always work..
stuellis to Whyte901
1 Feb 16 #77
The Sonos eco system is brilliant for wireless ability and simplicity but my big issue is the speakers themselves are mediocre sound quality. All the development seems to have gone into the wireless functionality but they then pair it with relatively poor speakers for the price range.

Unlikely to happen for the foreseeable. However Sonos speakers do work without an internet connection, what I mean is they can be connected to a router which isn't established to on the internet (happened to me when the line went down). Music downloaded on devices plays with no issue in such scenarios.
paulj48
1 Feb 16 #76
No company is infallible. Sonos speakers may work a short time without Internet connection (who knows if the phone home to verify) as long as you allready have the App, if the company did not exist th App would get removed from App stores. Also there would be no further development on the App and future iOS versions could render it useless.

I would have to absolutely disagree with you! Sonos speakers are some of the best in class for sound performance. In fact I think the user interface of the software is a bit ugly and is the weakest point. The wireless functionality is fantastic though.
paulj48
1 Feb 16 #81
only as long as the current version works with the latest version of the Android OS, obviously Sonos are probably not going to cease trading but its something to think about if investing into such a closed system.
stuellis
1 Feb 16 #82
From a wireless functionality I am yet to find another brand that can match the functionality, I had looked at Sonos as an option to upgrade my home and the demos I had the interface seemed leagues ahead of anything else on the market. You are welcome to your opinion regarding sound quality but to me the speakers underperform significantly compared to others, I'm not talking about volume or bass, I'm more interested in detailed sound throughout the whole range which I find lacking. I have even wondered if it's to do with the encoding Sonos use as it seems to apply to every speaker I have been shown in store, at events or at friends.
paulj48
1 Feb 16 #83
My experience is people who compare the Sonos to other wireless speakers or cheap mainstream CD combi systems think they sound great whereas actually compared to a good set of speakers and a HiFi or decent Stereo amp they're just average at best.
rhinopaul
1 Feb 16 #84
I think people should just stop comparing them to anything. They are good at what they do and are meant for . I too have an expensive audio system as well as the Sonos but the majority of time I use the Sonos for simplicity. I cant take my home audio into the kitchen or bathroom unless I wanted to wire in more expensive speakers.
I listen to my stuff whilst doing the dishes and the mrs can continue to listen to hers in the other parts of the house.
If Im on my own in the living room then I will use the audio system.
Everything has its own uses and benefits as they are completely different systems so why compare them.
OnlineLady
1 Feb 16 #85
A good set of speakers could prove far more costly and would probably be wired too, it's all highly subjective of course. But on a like for like where wireless speakers vs wireless speakers are concerned. The Sonos offerings always float to the top.

Wired interfaces do still outperform, but wireless is so much more convenient to use and located around the house. I personally don't mind taking a smidgen of weaker sound performance in the ranges for the blissful ecosystem.

Own two play1's as a stereo pair and a play5 in a large kitchen/diner. They are brilliant and simple to use. Deezer package can always be had on the cheap, got it recently for £25 for the year.

If you want to ditch the CD etc player and get all modern then these fit the bill. As a stereo pair, the play1's are really excellent. Prefer them to the play5.

I like to think this would _never_ be a problem even if they folded and were not bought out. The speaker software would never be updated again but there are 3rd party SONOS apps that apple allow.
I use one to control SONOS called ZonePlay there are others I believe. So no speaker software update but future proof app updates, so no worries.

Cheers

I was a bit surprised this deal reached the 'heat' it did without it benefiting many people. For those people in Glasgow wanting the cheap individual ones, it might be worth checking out the shop still but it seems that the deal isn't nationwide unfortunately.

Just had a look at Zoneplay, you can only use that App for your local/NAS files only and Tunein, no other music services at all so not really a replacement for the Sonos App.

sorry you are right I use ZonePlay on my watch, I thought it offered total functionality.

There is SonoPhone & SonoPad.

On SonoPhone under details - descriptions it mentions 'limitations'

"all music services except last.fm and amazon cloud music _are_ supported."

but no option to play from iPhone but the developer says 'yet' that implies he would implement this is SONOS went.

I guess because this is in place (by a developer not employed by SONOS) it could continue, ad infinitum

cheers

ps. I have heard the Santa Barbara company has had large backing from a big investor, and this is no doubt on going.

By reasonably priced I was thinking anything up to around 100 quid. However... the £279 device you've linked to has had me thinking about sliding my credit card out of my wallet. But I have willpower!

Its £240 on Amazon but has been lower. I'm waiting for under £200 usually Amazon.de or fr.

Or this for £20

... Or my Karman Hardon which I already own which when I think about it sounds good enough for me.

How do you go about setting up two Play 1s as a stereo pair? I've got one in my kitchen, and I'm tempted to add another.

Went to John Lewis in Newcastle to ask about this, the lady found one set in the back but they were scanning through as £299.95, I've reserved them and they are going to try and price match Currys at £259.99 so we'll see, supposed to get a call back within 3 working days.
