Just check Ebuyer on Fridays (has come up before), and use the free Sat Delivery, the only problem is Pound-Euro exchange rate fluctuations, might mean prices rises next few weeks, due to weaker £.

£0.75 Cashback too. Ebuyer's Free Saturday Delivery is very handy.
Ordered 8pm, Dispatched 12am, Depot 5am, Driver 7.30am, In hand :12 Midday.
(and probably several hundred people involved, to enable all that to happen)

Big thanks to all involved, easy for everyone to forget the hard work needed to achieve those sort of turnarounds.

tbh i dont notice any real performance increase with my core 2 duo laptop
i think lightroom even works more slowly but this could be due to a version increase and file size increase
main thing for me is the boot speed is much faster... i guess eventually it will work out i have saved a few hours of my life waiting for boot :stuck_out_tongue:
edit just timed: cold boot -> loading browser 25secs

Download: Windows 10 Pro X86 X64 v1511 en-US Feb2016 {Generation2}

Copy to USB using Rufus and then you can install and use your Windows 7 licence to activate.

Exactly the same thing was happening to me. Eventually figured out it was related to Windows 7 updates not having completed and being in some sort of 'partial' state (there seems to be a global Microsoft issue with windows 7 updates not completing at the mo, loads of people experiencing issues) - Found out how to stop the Windows update service using command line then had to delete a couple of files (which I understand remove partial downloads from the update service) - Immediately after this I tried the Windows 10 upgrade again and it worked! If you want to try this do the following....Open command prompt as an administrator (from memory I think you find this via Administrative Tools in Windows 7 then right click to open as administrator - then type 'net stop wuauserv' (without the quotes) and press enter, this stops the Windows update service. Then navigate to C drive - open Windows folder and in this locate the Software Distribution folder. Within this there is a folder called Data Store and another one called Downloads - delete the datastore.edb file and also delete the contents of the Downloads folder. WITHOUT rebooting the PC begin the Windows 10 installation. At this point is should hopefully work. (NB - If you need to restart Windows Update you simply type 'net start wuauserv' in command prompt but it should be reset anyway with the new installation of Windows)

I used media creation on a USB. It failed twice. Seemed to install and then finally failed with some error code.
I am back to Windows 7 and no services work. I either attempt a repair Win 7 or go install Win 8 and go 8.1 and then Win 10. A long haul to avoid a clean Win 10 install (so I can use old software).

Do these come with any sort of USB cable to do the initial clone or will it need to go in some sort of caddy?
joolt to SFconvert
19 Feb 16 1 #101
You'll need to purchase a SATA to USB external caddy (can get them for £5-£10, possibly cheaper) For example...
http://www.amazon.co.uk/JSG-Accessories%C2%AE-External-Enclosure-Caddy/dp/B01AJX3UC2/ref=sr_1_4?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1455893041&sr=1-4&keywords=2.5+inch+ssd+caddy

For anyone unsure of the process you can then download the free version of Macrium Reflect software - http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
Once SSD is in the external caddy plug it into a USB port, follow this guide you clone your disk - http://knowledgebase.macrium.com/display/KNOW/Cloning+a+disk
Then remove your existing drive from laptop or PC (google model on youtube if unsure how to do this) - Replace this with the newly cloned SSD, screw everything up again and switch on and you're done.

Depends on what he struggled with, if it's installing then you press F11 on a Sony Vaio as they don't have a boot menu to choose boot device.
fishmaster
19 Feb 16 #99
A reinstall might be the way to go, I'd use Microsoft media creation tool and use it to install Windows 10 from a USB drive and check if your BIOS has a UEFI boot setting which will drastically cut the boot time.

This explains it. I use some old software which will not install on Windows 10, so had to clone a Windows 7. Windows 10 upgrade fails after 12 hours from USB and Windows update will not work

For me..
On to Bios finished = 9 seconds.
Bios to Password = 35 - 9 = 26 seconds
Password to desktop = 10 seconds + another 10 seconds to stop processing.
It's around 1 minute.

If you cloned the installation then it will be your installation that is slow and faulty. If not then you have to notice a difference, there's no way not to.

Have a 2014 iMac with a 3TB fusion drive but at one point the HDD failed so when they put it back together the left me with a 120GB SDD and a 3TB HDD so I just have OSX on my SDD and it runs fast except I am running out of space on that. How easy is it to install on an iMac? Presume have to 'pull' the screen off and get in that way?

I use one of these on my iMac Inateck 2.5 enclosure with UASP: Inateck
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41EbZXO%2BE3L._SY300_.jpg

Using this I commonly achieve speeds in excess of 500MB/s using USB3.0 with samsung Evo's. I boot my iMac from it rather than internal traditional drive. This would save on opening your iMac.

Hope this helps.

Its a bit tricky but not impossible to a put a new drive in. If your competent inside a machine no reason now to try. Taking the glass off is easy enough. I found it was connecting all the sensors up after the drive had been fitted was the tricky bit. There are a couple of good guides on how to do it on the web so just give yourself plenty of time.
fishmaster to wozwebs
19 Feb 16 #91
It's not difficult when you know how to do it. I do it for a living and have worked on quite a few iMacs. The main issues are:

1. Keeping the front glass and LCD clean from fingerprints and dust
2. Using software to adjust the fan speed as they usually will spin at full speed because it's not an official Apple drive, a firmware issue.
3. Making sure you remove the power from the unit, sounds obvious but I've seen people electrocuted from forgetting. Also the PSU will retain electrical current in the capacitors which will discharge in to you and give you a very nasty shock if you touch the PSU.
4. You can't account for stupidity from people trying themselves and screwing things up. So if you're stupid or suspect you're that way inclined just don't attempt it.

Bought some stick on velco - pads from amazon and put my ssd on the back of my imac. The velcro makes it easy to attach/detach the drive.

This has transformed my imac - The wife and kides were moaning about how slow the imac was. It now boots very quickly, programs open instantly and for me, the really big bonus, is how well parallels now runs.My windows virtual machine boots up in seconds and is very fast indeed. (no more waiting 5 seconds for a right click to open!!!!)

I had very bad experience with it. I think it is very bad. I will never touch it consider what happened.

You have a good experience with it. Then good for you. You can vouch for it. You do not see me disagree with you all the time.

One time failure or bad performance (I do not know which it was) when it was brand new out of box is one time too many already given there are so many good choices of SSD out there.

I had a Ford Mondeo hire car once, it broke down. Therefore all Ford Mondeo's are rubbish. Worst cars ever made.

In all seriousness you had one bad drive, it happens. Move on.

I've had a couple of these running in my Servers for a while, 24/7 with Virtual machines running from them. Still as fas as the day they went in and not a hiccup. Nothing wrong with them at all. I've just replaced them with a couple of crucial BX200's as I needed higher capacity and the Crucial's were cheaper on the day, I'd have happily used the Sandisk Plus's again if they were cheaper on the day.

Personal experience. Ridiculous speed brand new out of box on flash newly installed windows 7, slower than HDD, cannot even finish test on AS SSD Benchmark, stuck forever on the test. I had AHCI enabled, SATA 3, 4K aligned, and the PC had other SSD before. The slowness was caused by Sandisk Plus, no other reason. Change to BX100 everything becomes fine.

Returned back to amazon straight away.

Why shall I give the same model a 2nd chance? I have used many models, have never experienced any problem. Plextor M5S/M6S, Samsung Evo 840/850, Crucial MX100/BX100, Sandisk Ultra.

I would stay away from this model.

Would this breathe some life into my old dell inspirion 1525 core 2 duo? Sons laptop (lenovo z507) packed in yesterday and we dont want, and cant afford, to buy a new one until September when he goes to Uni.
The Inspirions HDD packed in a while ago, but if this could bring it back to life for 9 months i would go for it.

Installing an SSD into an old Core 2 Duo machine was a revelation for me. It was like getting a new machine. Whether if allows your laptop to function for a few more years depends on how much wear is on other components (especially the cooling system). Assuming there are no faults, there is no reason it won't allow you to hold off a couple of years on a full upgrade. Core 2 Duo machines are still faster than most Chromebooks.

Seems someone has posted an upgrade video for your model of laptop:

If you are going to use SSD - you will get the biggest benefit from having your O/S on it. I have done this a couple of times and it works.
Download Macrium Reflect - freeware. Create an image of your existing disk - onto a spare disk or large USB stick. It will tell you how big you need.
Create a boot DVD for Macrium
Swop the HDD for the SSD
Boot from Macruim Boot DVD
Restore image to SDD.
Dependent on your machine or O/S you may want to go into the bios and select AHCI rather than IDE under the SATA settings.
Lots of info on the net
Uridium to kevin1961
26 Jan 16 1 #39
You can also do it using the built in windows backup tool, disk imaging has been there now since the days of Vista, just back it up to an external USB stick/disk, swap disk, boot Pc from a Windows Setup USB stick/disk and choose the repair options and point it to your backup image.

Loads of guides for this on the web but here's one picked at random...http://www.windowscentral.com/how-make-full-backup-windows-pc

As I had a Sata to USB adaptor, I connected the SSD as a USB device and used EaseUS ToDo Backup Free 9.0 - after it cloned, swapped the HDD for the SSD and laptop booted as if nothing had changed. Windows 10 did a few driver updates, and recognises the SSD (by disabling defrag and so on). Very easy, only took an hour - but like I said - relied on being able to have both drives connected at once.
