just to warn people this phone has a couple of odd limitations, which if you use mapping apps, could be a deal breaker!

- no compass. yup, no magnetometer (also no gyro, but nothing at this price does). wtf samsung.
i think no light or proximity sensors either, someone confirm?
- only 2 finger touch screen.
(may be issue for games also?)

this plus the waterproofness, plus the software pushed me back to the MotoG 2015.. sorry boring i know.

also this isn't dual sim (neither are).

the 1.5GB RAM though is a huge bonus. (it's not 50% more usable working space, it's more like double because of the system usage).
and that OLED screen.

there is no phone at this price point that doesn't have one huge problem. i've looked hard. (MotoG problem is 1GB RAM). P8 lite has small battery. M4 aqua has doubtful reliability and camera. etc etc.

edit2: size wise there's very little in it.
142.1 x 71.8 x 7.9 mm vs 142.1 x 72.4 x 11.6 mm tapered on the motog (thinner edges)
motog a LOT less slippery! probably irrelevant in a case..
cameras, jury's out on that, personally i prefer the HDR on the motog.

they are both slow old Snapdragon 410/Adreno 306 but the Samsung is slower clocked 1.2 vs 1.4Ghz motog.

if you want a faster phone and don't mind the screen/battery, look at the P8 lite.

now this is at top, could someone with one please install this app (free with ads)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gn.android.compass&hl=en_GB
and tell me what happens when you run it? i find it hard to believe any phone now wouldn't have compass.

The camera isn't bad on the Huawei, it's the screen that's the problem. It's dull and washed out with poor peak brightness levels (difficult to use outdoors).

The J5 camera isn't awful, it's just not as good as the other phones with 13MP sensors.

Every phone at this price is somewhat compromised.

I disagree about the Camera. The J5 has issues with dynamic range in daylight (blowing out the lighter areas, or crushing the detail in the darker areas), and there is no built-in HDR mode to compensate. I also found the J5 to feel a bit cheap and flimsy compared the solid feeling Moto G 3rd. The rest of the points are fair though.

I'm surprised this is getting as hot as it is, considering it's only available at this price to a small minority of people who own an active Vodafone PAYG SIM. Maybe that detail should have been included in the title, at the moment it's a bit misleading.

I have a Moto G2 and I have to say this phone has an excellent spec for the money and more features that the Moto G, PDG in my humble opinion.
ssjinzo
27 Jan 16 2 #7
Internal memory only 8gb you really need to point this spec out as I personally think this is not useable if you plan on using and install a handful of apps. If you don't use you your phone much I think it's fine but 16gb is a minimum. The snapdragon 410 is fine in this price range. All other specs are good too. Also I would put upgrade in the title just so people know it's only upgrade

It's probably fine if you don't install games. Regular applications aren't usually very large.
mynameisthehulk to ssjinzo
27 Jan 16 #9
Dependent on what the OS takes up on these (and I am unsure) 8gb is usually enough for more than a "handful" of apps. It's games which take up space, if you play games of any type but especially 3D games you are right 8GB will not be enough, 16GB probably won't either. There are however a lot of people who don't have any games on their phones at all and for these people 8GB should be plenty.
acholflocik to ssjinzo
27 Jan 16 #21
with android it doesn't really matter as it has a microsd slot so any big games can just be installed and moved to the sd card

27 Jan 16 #10
Probably but some apps like what's app and other messaging services store images videos ect on to the phone memory and you cannot set it to store on memory card. A lot of people have auto download set. Iam sounding old here now but a lot of younger generation send messages and pictures to each other and don't memory manage so 8gb fills up really quickly. But each use case us different just a heads up to perarants buying for there children. This has been the case in my experience a lot of people who have kids only have a few messaging apps and bulk of storage is taken up by that.

27 Jan 16 #35
It's a personal thing. I like the blacks with oled displays, but I don't like the blue tinge a lot have, and the ink spots (on ths S3, Note 2), etc.
leelukehope
27 Jan 16 #36
I agree with the blacks and they're definitely more vibrant and nice to look at but the greys have a yellow tinge which really put me off, and the pentile matrix was noticeable on my Note 4. Made my iPhone 6 look like it had a higher ppi. The main issue I have is the eventual screen ghosting when the OLEDS deteriorate (might have been what you meant by ink spots).

The ink spots probably doesn't effect most people and probably is a bit like backlight bleed, were every device seems different (with IPS displays anyway).

I use CM with the black themes so it's much more visible this way, with the default firmware and UI, probably less so.
leelukehope
27 Jan 16 #40
Ok no that's not what I was referring to, didn't realise that issue existed. The issue I have is this:
http://s13.postimage.org/eub1j119j/IMG_20120227_00063.jpg

Takes at least a year usually but enough people know about it for it to affect resale value. Obviously with this phone resale value isn't an issue as its already cheap!
YouDontWantToKnow

The OP would get more HOT votes if they did.

Until I entered the link I thought it was a £90 Samsung Camera.

Samsung do not make good cameras.

27 Jan 16 #42
Looks like image retention. Not good.
leelukehope
27 Jan 16 1 #43
Yeah. Was deciding between the S6 edge and iPhone 6 and thought they might have been able to improve things but the S6 edge in the store had much worse screen ghosting than that image... Obviously I wouldn't have screen on as long as the stores do but still it's an eventuality rather than an if.

I have this phone. Very snappy to use. Nice clear screen. Decent battery life. However, the 8gb internal memory is proving a pain. I dont have that many apps either, no games. I use whatsapp and im thinking it must be using the phone memory to save the photos as that is the only thing i can think off that is using up all the internal memory.I know for sure the camera is saving photos to the sd card. The good news is that the j5 is getting marshmellow and apparently you can use the sd card as internal memory. Other than this, its a fantastic phone.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/9435/the-huawei-p8-lite-review/6

small unremovable battery, inefficient chipset (?) and slow charge time.
edit: actually it's considerably more powerful chipset, probably why battery life is worse also. depends what you want, i NEED battery life. this and the screen mean if you stay indoors, P8lite is probably a great phone (no offense meant).

I'm really hesitant about phones with 8gb memory. Yes a lot of the apps etc can be moved onto sd card but some cant and taking software/updates into account you're not left with much.

Honestly its really annoying that manufacturers are making us pay a premium for phones with a bit more internal memory (thanks for starting this trend apple!) Memory prices are so low these days- 32gb micro sd costs like £7-8...

I ordered this yesterday. I've had a very low opinion of CPW in the past, and I'm sure their stores still leave a lot to be desired..

However, the experience with their mail order department (via phone) was outstanding. I ordered at around 2pm yesterday, and the girl on the phone was hugely helpful and thorough. The phone arrived by 10.30am this morning. Top class all round. Nice one, CPW and keep it up.

I have a GIFF GAFF sim. If I get one of these for £99 for example with the £10 EE Pay As You Go Sim. Can I just throw away that EE sim card and put in my GIFF GAFF one?

It's just a Sim Free version of the J5 on here is £169.99?

I am still using a Galaxy S2, I am stuck in the past, so go easy on my if this is a dumb question.
chancooluk to MrMakstar
28 Jan 16 1 #69
Yes. The phone is unlocked for use with any SIM, as long as the SIM is the right size.

If you get the EE SIM, put it in the phone and text STOP PACK to 150, you will then receive a message asking to confirm, text back with YES. After this you will have a SIM with £10 of actual credit, instead of a minutes bundle. You can then use this credit to buy things from the Google Play app store.

Well over the past ~20 years of mobile phone ownership ive never dropped my phone down a toilet or into a puddle or decided its a good idea to shower with it... Whereas a removable battery has come in handy many times.

To be fair its hard to go wrong these days with a cheap android phone, they're all reasonably decent but some are better than others. Moto G is a good phone, the J5 is a better phone.

great if you can get a PAYG upgrade ... but from experience that can be difficult even if you meet all the stated requirements ... and they say my son doesn't qualify at the moment even though he had a Vodafone PAYG for a couple of years with to ups every could of months - so buying from Vodafone at £99 using existing SIM looks to be a better deal.
