Kettle and toaster set £7.50 at Wilko nationwide. Appears on website but will need to call local store for availability in your area. Purchased two sets at West Ealing this afternoon!

Toaster is awful! Put setting to full & then put bread through twice to get your bread to a decent toasted brown level IMHO.

Customer service from this company is just the same. Tried to return toaster for replacement & was told to return it & my own cost & it would take 8 to 12 weeks for the toaster to be repaired or a decision on a replacement!

Make up your own mind before you purchase.

The kettle I have never had a problem with, still going strong, fingers crossed.

There was a time when Russel Hobbs was a trusted name in appliances, but over the years they have just fallen by the wayside in quality, its as if the brand has been ran down, for what reason I don't know but maybe its other brands out there that have bought it out and want to push there own name ..Who knows!

My microwave was les than 2 weeks out of it's warranty, it literally exploded in my face, I called their customer services and was told the same as above pretty much - they hadn't heard of any other issues (like it should matter!), and if I wanted to return it for investigation, it would need to be paid for at my expense (IE postage costs!) and if 'no fault was found', I would then need to pay to get the appliance back. They couldn't tell me what would happen if a fault WAS found - they just said they would have to get it inspected first! They didn't care remotely that the thing had blown up in my kitchen and was potentially a huge health risk! Some utter moron even asked me to operate it whilst I was on the phone, and describe what happened when it was plugged in! Utterly laughable service - this company deserve to go out of business.

If any company was behaving like that I would report the matter to Trading Standards, and take it to the small claims court. You deserve not only a full refund, but possibly compensation as well.

And slashing of prices to get people to buy...

snobbish?

Agree with other posters here that Russell Hobbs has become a rubbish brand - a kettle I bought last July just broke - a bit of plastic snapped off the switch and it stopped working.

Customer service pants too, told me to take it back to Argos for a refund.
joneeboy to winningchip
31 Jan 16 #40
In accordance with contract law, your purchase contract is with the seller. If you bought it from Argos, what RH cutomer service told you is perfectly correct. They gave you good advice so why complain about them? You should have taken it back to Argos and if what you claim is correct would have received a refund. If you only bought it in July, you can still do that if you have it. If you don't, whose fault is that?
As has already been stated, Russell Hobbs still make some quality items, but that is causing me a problem. Our kettle, toaster and coffee percolator are chrome, all made by RH, all work perfectly and I see no reason to replace them. My wife does not agree because she now wants a set of red one for our newly decorated kitchen. As for past quality, it is true that Russell Hobbs were the top Uk brand for all 3 of thes small kichen appliances, with Morphy Richards as a close runner up for toasters and and kettles that never wore out. Times change, so now the top of the range may still be made here but the lower standard are imported from wherever! Quality still costs more, but I might be tempted to buy my wife the cheapest ones as long as they are red! (and I get to keep the old ones in a kitchen cupboard where I can reach then easily.)

Exactly what do you think was wrong with the company advice? It was good advice, correct in accordance with the law, and would have resulted in a refund. As for reporting to Trading Standards, where do you live? In most places you can longer contact them locally but have to go to a national number, if you can get through, (its not free, its 9p a minute from a landline!) or make an online report'
"We no longer give advice by telephone, e-mail or to personal callers unless they have spoken to the Citizens Advice consumer service first. They will refer details of complaints that need specialist help to us. If we can, we will then contact you to offer advice."
"need Consumer Advice? Call Citizens Advice consumer service on 03454 04 05 06 or use the online reporting form. The service is open Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.00pm."
As for the small claims court have you ever made a claim? Thats not free either, and the courts will not tolerate trivial or spurious claims. For someone to claim damages, any loss would have to be proven to
the satisfaction of the court. The claimant would be expected to show that every effort had been made to resolve the situation prior to approaching the court. In this case the company would surely enter a simple defence through their expensive lawyer, that it had no contract with the buyer as it was not the seller. The Court would decide on that, but if the claimant lost the case, then defendant's costs as well as his own, would be down to the claimant. Ouch!

Its Wilco that is cutting the prices, not the manufacturer, and its because Wilco is undergoing a complete revision of its sales strategy, according to what I was told by our local stores manager who wasexplaing why I couldn't find stocks of things I had been buying for years. Anyone who is a regular shpper at Wilco will have noticed the changes.
As for Russell Hobbs, that brand has changed hands several times, and its just that, a brand name, owned by US appliance giant Salton Inc, who resurrected the brand in the UK a few years ago. It also owns the rights to several other formerly famous British brands.... and their patents. Russell Hobbs invented the automatic home coffee percolator, and the automatic switching off electric kettle.

For the individual wishing to question what was 'wrong' with the service, telling a consumer to turn a faulty appliance on isn't exactly sensible is it!

I don't disagree with you and will indeed take the kettle back to Argos.

I do feel the kettle should have lasted longer than it did - it broke because of a cheap shoddy plastic switch which to me suggests poor quality.

Bit of a shame that formerly respected brands have become a shadow of their former selves.

If the item is faulty, then you have no need to contact the manufacturer, unless you bought from them. Otherwise, you contact the retailer, who then arrange with yoursself for a repair a replacement or a refund. the payment for postage is not your responsibility, and you can insist that it be collected from your home. Try asking for a pre paid envelope that you can use. They have to deal with your case with minimum inconvenience to yourself. Refer to Sale Of Goods Act 2002, i have it saved to my mobile as PDF, just in case anyone tries to dispute anything with me. No matter what some sales assistant tells you about company policies. They can not trump an act of law. People need to read up on their rights and not blindly accept what some one tells them in a pub, or whatever. We all get told by anyone that we have only "a one year guarantee on that" This is absolute bullcrap. You may have to look hard for a copy of SOGA 2002 as it's not easily found, now the OFT has ceased to exist.
soldierboy001
1 Feb 16 #70
No difficulty looking for SOGA 2002 just put that in your search engine, good luck understanding it but basically it means that the seller must repair, replace or refund you not the manufacturer unless you bought it direct from the manufacturer.

No difficulty looking for SOGA 2002 just put that in your search engine, good luck understanding it but basically it means that the seller must repair, replace or refund you not the manufacturer unless you bought it direct from the manufacturer.[/quote]I'll not disagree with you there, looking for SOGA 2002 is easy, as you say, just type it into your search engine. However, the hard part is actually finding it. I'm gonna take a guess and say that you have been looking at
"The Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumers Regulations 2002" I'd advise anyone not to even bother with that as it is so convoluted and for the benefit of legal types who practices the art of obfuscation. The SOGA 2002 was printed by OFT. It is very easy to understand and presented in a way that doesn't confuse. It is basically a shortened and straight to the point version for everyday people. Essential these days for everyone, that's just my opinion.

We had a kettle that developed an intermittent fault that caused the heating element to stay on, if you set it to boil and forgot about it it would boil off all the water right before burning your house to the ground. Amazed they can legally sell this dangerous junk in the UK.
soldierboy001
5 Feb 16 #86
The most common reason for a kettle not to switch off is user error of the user overfilling the kettle that stops the cut off switch from working which is not a manufacturing fault.

5 Feb 16 #87
Lol - doom and gloom

Let me think .... Oh yes if you had a telly that developed a fault it might overheat when you are in bed and burn your house down. Not to mention that microwave and washing machine with a problem.

Best we ditch all electrical items and go back to the 1800's to be safe.
