Probably a stupid question but will these work with lamps that have to be unplugged to turn off?

Not stupid at all. Yes - the units would be ideal for your lamps as it cuts off all power.

Some plugs can be obscured by furniture etc.
I use LightwaveRF plugs around the house for ease of use, including turning on multiple devices and lights at once. via my GPS location and on timed schedules dependent on the time of year.

good deal! I wanted one of these over Christmas. The Christmas tree lights were plugged into an extension lead which I had to crawl under the tree every night to turn off.

How do they operate? RF? would like to have something like this in my daughter's room but not if I need to go in to switch it on/off.

Yep.
These are RF ones. (They say line of sight as the range is greatest with nothing in the way but they don't require it.)
I had to hunt around to get IR ones I could use with a Logitech Harmony IR only multi-remote. (Because yes, I am too lazy to get up to turn off a plug. :man: )

Not seen them under £15 for a long time.

We have these all over for lamps. Plugs all situated behind units so keeps cables hidden and easy to turn all on/off together. We just press the one 'off' button when going to bed and it turns all lamps off......and to add to the 'elderly' using them, we got my elderly Grandma some and she could turn lamps on/off without waiting for family/carers to visit as she was chair/bed bound so worth every penny for her

I just purchased one set and it is great for the two lamps in my living room. Don't need to have line of sight to operate. Cheaper than all others I have seen.

Remote has an incredibly weird layout! I wonder if they are programmable. Ideally I'd like to get two sets and operate them from 1 remote i.e. 1 button turns 2 or 3 sockets on/off. As the sockets appear to have numbers on them (1,2,3) I'm kind of thinking they are fixed to a specific button. :disappointed:. Also It's a shame the remote doesn't have an 'All Off' button.

OK found a data sheet and it looks like they can be re-programmed. Also CPC do spare remotes for £4.02 if anybody wanted/needed one. In truth though you might as well get another complete set of sockets and a remote for the extra £5.
I can see they have 3 switches numbered 1,2,3. If I bought 2 sets, would both Number 1 connections from each set be turned on/off by the remote? Hope that makes sense lol

To quote the datasheet posted above:
So in short, this kit can't do that.
That being said, I had a similar kit years ago, and both the remote and the plugs could be switched to work on a specific channel (out of four). So if both sets of plugs were on the same channel, the remote would control both sets, and if they were on different channels, each remote would operate them separately.

How does that make me a hypocrite exactly? Because I use a functional device to change channels, with more than 80 available on the most basic tv?
Hardly the same as turning a plug off, is it now.

I've got gang plugs with a load of consoles and a 40 inch crt telly plugged into one and it's got to be using nothing compared to the standby of those things. Got my modem and router on another and it's an easy way to reset both if they're playing up.

Well this 'lazy person' had used the same set for about 6 years now and they are still in full working order! With the set I have I use button one for two separate lamps so I'm sure these would be OK to use in a similar way. I paid £5 for mine on offer back then so money well spent

I've had the asda version for a few years...
Only issue I've had is the socket forgetting its programming, but dead easy to reset it.
Its the sockets that hold the pairing data, so you cannot have 2 remotes control one socket :-(
You could have several sockets on one button however...
You can operate this through walls, even floors - but sometimes needs a bit of remote waving !

Cheapest I've seen these at.
