Although this is the cheapest I've seen the vanilla game, am I right in thinking I'm best sticking with the demo and then purchasing TTK if I take to the demo? The demo seems rather big in itself, so I'm tempted to get stuck into that and purchase TTK if I like the demo.

Sorry, I thought somebody wanted to buy it now, not 8 months in the past?
It's never been possible to play TTK without the first two expansions, whether that was the Legendary Edition or the Digital Download edition which didn't include them. But that required you to have them installed before it was available.
And you can't argue that the content in the first two expansions such as Eris Morn's bounties, Blades of Crota, and the Wolves Prowling got wiped out when the TTK patch came, whether you'd bought it or not.

I'm only getting this for the campaign... Is it still worth it?

Original campaign doesn't make a lot of sense and isn't a great story. Last year's DLCs and taken King have much better story components. Still worth it for a fiver though. (Coming from someone with 55 days playtime in destiny).

This isn't a game you buy for the campaign, the story is mostly non-existent and there isn't that much content - the enjoyment of the game comes from doing the higher level content to try and get better equipment. The problem is vanilla Destiny is really an extended demo now, with the release of the Taken King Bungie took a more aggressive approach compared to previous DLC's and actually removed a lot of content so there's not really much you can do aside from the existing story missions and the original raid - the story missions were always weak and while the original raid is good, few people play it now.

Even if your local store is showing this as out of stock it might still be worth checking. I went to the birstall store which showed as out of stock but they had two copies. It also comes with a free month of PSPlus which was a nice surprise.

Can't bring myself to vote either way on this. On the one hand, this is the cheapest I've seen vanilla Destiny, but on the other hand... it's vanilla Destiny.
Best advice I can give is try the demo. A couple of extra levels and a few bells and whistles aside, that's all the vanilla game is. If you like the demo, buy the version that's out there that adds all the expansion stuff.
Personally, I'd never touch the game again...

Had you have read my comment a couple down from that all would have made sense. When The Taken King was first released it didn't include the previous two expansions, this has since changed.

29 Jan 16#40
This is misleading, The Taken King includes the other two expansions.
Actually, the two expansions don't exist any more, if you'd paid for the two expansions like me and not completed them, TTK suddenly wiped out a bunch of content you'd paid for

take no notice of Buzz's reply.. it was very pedantic and didnt really account for the wider picture. i do advocate that there is still a large player base and that the £18 quid game is the one to buy :-)

If you don't play often and won't reach the endgame content this may be the best option before Destiny 2 is released and the player base leaves the original.

Let me just tell anyone thinking of getting this, for the price this is worth getting to try out but to a point is pretty much useless. Best thing to do is get a Legendary edition which is packed with the original game, last years 2 add-ons and the taken king add-on. That can be had for £25 on amazon maybe cheaper elsewhere. Dont bother getting it second hand because the codes will already be used. I can say with confidence and experience that £25 is a lot of game for the money and if you really get into it 100's of hours could be lost to it easily. Hope that helps out.

I disagree about the game dying also, I'm on X1 and the servers are always full and always find it easy to find a raid team, who knows how long it will last with The Division coming out, but for now it's a great game to play both solo and with friends. Heat added OP

I think at £5 there's enough to do with it. There's plenty to do. Yes most of the crucible is locked but I've just been doing 6v6 random game modes playlist and loving it!
I played the game through to the end of expansion 2 - House of Wolves on the Xbox one and stopped because taken King cost a bomb and the legendary edition was one code for 3 DLC packs (which felt like a waste when I spent £35 on the first two already). It was a principle thing!
I've returned to the base game on ps4 and as I said above, I've had plenty to do. Did my game glitch or was I destined (ha) to jump from level 8/9 to level 25 with all rare items just by talking to the Speaker!? If I can do that jump again I may change class and level up another character. It was easy to get from level 25 to 34 just off bounty tasks.
Yes my character hasn't got legendary or exotic stuff yet but what I love is on crucible it doesn't matter and I'm rarely out of the top 3/4 places.
Undoubtedly £20 for the version of the game with all 3 DLC packs is the way forward, but for £4.96 here then if you want a taste of the game then it's not a bad shout. Who knows, taken King may be even cheaper than £20 when you finish the missions!
Last thing before I shut up - the Strike on the Moon. Why are SO MANY people trying to climb the cliffs and leaving me to face the final boss alone?! Is there eternal life hiding up on top of the cliff?

I disagree that it's died a death. I've played vanilla for a while and then replayed with the legendary edition and never found any delays in queuing for strikes or PvP. Nor were the social hubs or "open world" sections ever dead at any time of day. Speaking for PS4 version here.
Levelling is ridiculously fast now, the only real grind I found was the subspec levelling once the main one you choose is done and gearing up to 300 and beyond.
If you aren't sure and want a taster this is a steal if you are more committed, get the legendary edition and reap the benefits, there aren't many shooters out there that control so well in current gen. It feels great to play and it certainly paid for itself in terms of the number of hours I invested into the game.

Don't waste your money on a game that has died a death. The player base left the game as bungies prices were getting greedy and silly. I'm not surprised it's getting cheap as chips now and the grind to level up is just plain boring.
I'd recommend spending your cash on the Witcher 3. And heat given for a cheap find op.

pointless owning the base game. you won't have access to like 95% of the things which make the game what it is.
no access to crota raid, POE, kings fall raid. no access to trials, iron banner, or half the crucible stuff. no access no nightfalls, daily's, etc. no access to new maps/locations.
basically you need to buy the £18 version linked above otherwise forget it

I bought the plain edition of Destiny and at level 8 I went to the Speaker and got an upgrade to all Rare items and a boost to level 25. A couple of evenings later I'm level 34. I can see a good few areas of the game is out unless you have DLC but for £5 this is a steal!
I've ordered the legendary edition so I can open the rest of the game up. But I was under the impression the basic game was massively restricted but I've had a tonne of fun getting to the point I'm at.

That's the Destiny: The Taken King - Legendary Edition. That does contain the base game and all expansions. You asked how much the taken king upgrade was
But looking at the above link on the PlayStation Store, it seems now that The Taken King upgrade now actually includes both previous expansion packs (you just need to own the base game already). So you can scrap the 2 x £19.99 comment. But yes, you are right, it would make more sense to purchase Destiny: The Taken King - Legendary Edition for £18.04.
I suppose £4.94 is a great price if you just want a taster of Destiny.
