Regardless of the above, it's the last time your kids will get to see all the people that they've spent the last 5 years of their lives growing up with. If you have the disposable income to buy a dress or suit which is a bit more expensive, they (probably) deserve it.
I'm not in any way, shape or form criticising those who have to go for one of the cheaper options, only those who choose to "because it's American". Whichever way you look at it, it's a party, let them enjoy it.

I've been out of school since 2005, didn't go to my prom, and an still in touch and see everyone I want to from back then

Every secondary school these days has a prom. It is a nightmare for the teachers to organise (and police in our free time) but we do it because it is such a big deal for the kids. Many of them have been with their peers since primary or nursery school and lots go off to different colleges so it is their last bit 'thing' together. Saying that they are usually pretty keen to clear off to an after party!
