I adore Muscle Foods! These are the best chicken breasts I've ever tasted, and that's saying a lot when compared to the Halal chicken breasts I used to get in Edinburgh. Their chicken isn't pumped full of water and tastes so good we rarely even season it before cooking.

I also highly recommend their Irish Sirloin Steaks, they are grass fed and free range and the difference in taste and texture is significant. I can usually only afford to get them when they are on sale but I recently got an email from them offering 10 for £24 and no discount code which meant I could also combine it with the £19 for 5kg Chicken Breasts (which did require the code) and got it all with premium delivery for less than £50.

They can be a bit spammy with their promotional offers BUT I have Gmail and it goes into the promotions tab so I only look at them when I want to. I would recommend signing up for it though, if you get a 'personal' email Darren Beale look at it, it almost always means they are sending you an offer or code for an even better deal.

When you first join Darren will also email you and ask for any suggestions. I pointed out that we are doing low carb and would love to see some lower carb options and maybe even some sesamee flour that I could only find in one other place. Shortly thereafter they started offering that sesamee flour and at a significantly better price than the other site as well as offering some lower carb goodies and sugar free syrups etc.

If you think this is just for muscle bound souls think again, I discovered them from someone mentioning them in a post here in HUKD and I will never look back! I do still buy some meats from the supermarkets don't get me wrong BUT I have found the quality and taste of Muscle Food meats so much better that I'd rather eat their meat and less of it than more meat of supermarket quality. Though thankfully, due to deals, I can often get them for very similar prices.

Give them a shot, you won't regret it, and no, I don't work for them and I'm not related to them!

So you can't actually get these for £18 delivered?
You have to spend 7 quid on something else then pay £3.95 delivery, or am I reading this incorrectly?

MEGA HOT!

Had these from SF and also exactly the same thing from Costco..

So for 5KG @£18 this is cheaper than going wholesale to a trade butchery
or even Smithfield as you do not have to drive a zillion miles and get up at
4am to buy them!

Slice them up, freeze them, defrost some and stir fry [non stick no fat wok]
them.. for mass bulk, strength and not so fat fatty food intake ;-)

15kg prime chicken delivered free for £54!!

Correct. It's 24.99 minimum spend. Excluding the 3.99 unavoidable delivery charge they tack on. So it's actually 28.98 minimum spend. I went with it in the end but I don't feel great about those add-ons and the wording of the deal when posted.

I used to solely go to farm foods for chicken, as it was so cheap. But I weighed it once after And it weighed 500g when sold as 1kg.
I guess it's similar with Aldi.

I've tried allot of chicken... these and my local butchers in Derby that do 5kg for £20 are the best value for money
I bag them in pairs and defrost the night before.

What a ridiculous analogy. Nothing wrong with having a little concern for how livestock are kept. You can do nothing to save the animals that were tested on in the 50's but refusing to buy meat that is not ethically sourced can and does impact how businesses source meat.

All our meats come from reputable farms with animal welfare are all met.

Reflected in the size and quality of meat we sell, we know that grass fed animals enjoy a happy life and produce the best cuts - so we offer a range of grass fed and grain fed meats."

What the hell does "animal welfare are all met." mean exactly?

I tried muscle foods once and was really put off. The meat was delivered without the promised cool packs, it was little more than bubble wrapped. The chicken looked particularly bad, very slimy and flat (also from Lithuania). They did refund me without a problem but it's put me right off. robm612
17 Feb 16 2 #65
There is some evidence. The free range chicken I buy at tesco is £13 per kilo, this is £3.60 per kilo. When you also consider it arrives from Lithuania I'm inclined to believe it won't meet the standards of free range chicken here in the UK.

Chicken's chicken. Halal chicken supposedly shouldn't have any blood (+ kill the animal in a less hostile manner but the animal still dies) and I've seen a good chunk of them with it so it's irrelevant to me. Besides, it's meat so it's bound to have blood somewhere.

Crisps and cans of lager don't cause obesity. In moderation, as a treat, when eating a well balanced diet most of the time, these pose no greater issues than the life of a body builder. I work with a body builder. He's ill on a regular basis, his potassium levels are sky high causing no end of issues, his blood pressure is high, he has awful mood swings, he needs viagra to get his pecker up, and he's not even 30 years old. yeah you're right, it was a point poorly made. but the point I will try and make slightly better this time, is that eating the odd bag of crisps and a couple of cans of lager is no different to bodybuilding. both can be just as damaging if a healthy balanced diet isn't observed. hopefully that makes more sense. everything in moderation.

This is EU sourced chicken which meets British standards. Certainly not free range, practically impossible for this price.

Had these and they were bigger than supermarkets but it doesn't matter as it's priced per kg. Not much different to any other chicken breast. At promo price it's a good deal but at full price not so much.

I really don't buy into the supermarket injected chicken conspiracy.

Cheapest chicken is £3.85 per kilo Asda smartprice and as a bodybuilder i can tell you one chicken is just as good as another for protein as most of them are bulked up with the usual water sodium mixture. Besides i f you really want to get **** then you are better off buying bulk whey protein and mixing it with nesquik to give you pure protein. Lol all those saddos buying the maximuscle stuff like i did for years before realising its all nonsense except for those with the genetics and who train 5 days a week! I see the plonkers in the gym flinging the weights and drinking those protein shakes in the locker room without a clue how much protein they will urinate back out and when to take it and what carbs to use lol They would be better off with a weeks supply of anabol if thats what they think is bodybuilding - no wonder most of them are taking it and synthol! Mad!

If its £18 without any postage then it would have been a decent deal - Asda is better choice.

I said that they are not caged as I seen a few comments that said they probably were, I never said they were free range. At this price point it would be impossible to buy free range chicken breasts, and while unfortunate is beyond the financial means for most people to buy free range chicken breasts. We always buy free range eggs as the extra cost is not too much, but for meat, free range can be anywhere between 5-7 times more expensive and thats simply not going to be affordable for most families.

30kg arrived today with no issues. (We own a care home so not all of it was for us) it came a day earlier than expected and was warned it would arrive earlier and could change dates if necessary.

Had an order misplaced by parcel force, muscle food replaced without question. All the meat and the replacement arrived the next day, was told to keep the other order which was still cold. We probably could have eaten it but we gave it to the dog who's never been so lucky.

Never had a problem with their meat, the steaks I get elsewhere but their mince is good if you catch it on offer and their chicken breasts stay plump and juicy throughout the cooking process.

FYI - Some of their meat has been frozen for a year, I discovered this because something said it expired the year before... when questioned about it they said,

"Yes, this was the original date of expiry, but we freeze it, so it's still in date, we re-date it on dispatch but this must have slipped the net"

So basically yeah.... Year or more old meat, frozen on slaughter, then re-dated on dispatch.

I order from muscle food myself, but I get the red tractor breasts now. The standard (or 'premium' breasts as mf call them) are from Lithuania, which didn't really appeal to me. Poor factory farming conditions for the birds and the meat produced.
Even though I do like the company overall, they are the kings of overselling. Like this 'no added water' nonsense, no other fresh chicken breasts have this done, and it makes it sound like water is injected into the breast to plump it up, absolute rubbish. Frozen chicken breasts are frozen in a water based glaze, which is where they're getting that from.
yrreb88 to PumpyJoe4

What's the consensus here with Muscle Food, are you really saving as much as they make out that you are? Is it worth getting this over the usual Costco meat I usually get (which is better than the usual supermarket guff anyway)

If there is legitimate savings here I might give them a try, we go through a lot of meat in our house. But every time I see these style sales I can't help but think they're BS and the price is probably no better.
mambo1888 to randomnut
18 Feb 16 #176
I used to get my meat from costco's butcher and they were really good and decent priced. I moved to online butchers like musclefood/westin gourmet because the nearest costco is about 1 hour away, not even sure if im still a member now too. I always spend more than £75 so delivery is free and there are always good offers on.

To answer your question I would say quality is probably about the same and savings would depend on what offers are on when you buy. If I lived closer to costco I would probably just go there and buy 1 months worth of meat at a time instead of buying 6 months at time on line.

I didn't enjoy any of the cuts of meat from MuscleFood, there was just something odd about the burgers, sausages and steak, just didn't taste right. (because they are 'healthy' I guess).
We had a laugh with the sausages actually, cooked in the oven for 40 minutes and were still raw in the middle, cooked for another 45 minutes and still were not cooked, nearly 90 minutes at 200C and still not cooked.... threw them in the bin!

They're chicken sausages and hash steaks though are awesome.

I have ordered the steak bundle and it was ok the chicken was good though and big, The mince was so so and the diced beef forget it was so chewy.
Chicken sausages are still in the freezer and they will probably stay there or in the bin. Meatballs were good the steak was ok if a little small, Also you will get deals emailed and texted through all the time but you can opt out.

PEOPLE! STOP comparing this crap to Costco and your local butchers which sell British Chicken.

This is cheap foreign crap from Poland, Lithuania, Brasil etc.
Fed a crap diet, gas flushed and tastes horrid.

Don't believe me then check the ingredients tab on the description page.

You can get this cheap crap and the same prices from any of the bad wholesalers out there like Makro, Bookers, Asiana.

I emailed Darren once (owner or something of musclefood), unfortunately he never bothered to reply. Was really happy with Musclefood until I got sent 5 KG's of diced chicken breast that was, and I am not overstating here, orange.

In fact is was so orange I took a picture of a satsuma next to it and sent the email off to Darren.

The customer services team were great and I got a refund, but it put me off ordering from them ever again.

Poland, Lithuania are inside EU. Feeding standards are exactly the same as UK plus extra export rules.. You overestimated corner gossips. Probably food from these countries is better as they have far "richer" soil than UK. Same situation with grapes for wine. French are one of the best, not UK ones... A bit science do not hurt.

Why does MuscleFood itself ALSO stock British chicken at a much higher price?! Because this is garbage for the muppets out there that don't know better or simply don't care.
Do a bit of research or i can always point you in the direction of poultry rearing protocol differences between these countries and us.

"If it is the same quality and rearing standards then why the 70% cheaper cost?" Worker costs - they are 3 times cheaper then UK
"And why can you only find this crap at low level wholesalers pre frozen and gas flushed?" - transport through Europe
According your thoughts we shouldn't buy olive as they are from foreign market, salmon from Norway is fake, and do not touch mandarins as they came from Africa.
Probably Germans says eat our German meat as UK ones are with antibiotics, French puts their beef above Wagyu etc etc. Common sens is what we need. And i fully agree with you: fresh is fresh, support local market.
nublets2k
22 Feb 16 #280
Why doesn't the deal price include delivery?

Where was it those horsemeat lasagnes came from again?

Salmon from Norway isn't good. But that's down to farming, which is a much bigger can of worms.

Mandarins mostly come from China, you'd have to look quite hard to find an African grown one.
soldierboy001
22 Feb 16 #281
Because the price would be £22.95 including delivery and would not look as a good deal for muppets that just look for the price. Same principal as pricing not including VAT, marketing ploy. Would you have bought it with the price including delivery?

I just wanted to post that you were repeating yourself without actually providing any evidence. caposcott
23 Feb 16 #286
Now your just talking utter nonsense.
You have no clue and your obviously just doing a quick google search and clicking the WRONG websites LOL
70% cheaper cost is down to the legal limit of chickens per cubic feet of barn and the feed given to them.
Frozen as gas flushed STINKS and keeping them thawed allows the gas to permeate the meat giving you some rank tasting chicken. Frozen reduces absorption and also reduces the foul smell.
Who mentioned anything other than badly raised chicken? Your talking about grapes, olives and Mandarins?? WHY? Nothing is wrong with the majority of production of these items LOL!
oh and a side note, French put there meat above Wagyu because of patriotism and ego more than anything else. I know, my head Chef is a french man and refuses to buy Wagyu.
Wagyu beef is produced in better standards and practice than ANY meat produced in the UK. Including free range...but Muscle Food is selling that. We are talking about there low quality, tasteless chicken breast that muppets on this forum are trying to convince others is either British and/or top quality. I am an educator is all
caposcott
23 Feb 16 #287
Feeding standards exactly the same!? LOL Your google researching the wrong articles pal. Educate yourself.
LOL What has wine got to do with intensive raised chicken that's fed a crap diet?! Who is talking about wine?! LOL
Are these chickens living outdoors in the sun eating soil like grapes vines? HAHA!
nublets2k
23 Feb 16 #288
A. There is Wagyu beef being produced in the UK.
B. Wagyu is classed as such because of the breeds of cattle it comes from. There's no guarantee of good production standards or practice.

I've risked an order on their sister site, Westin Gourmet.

For £27.59 delivered, I've got

2.5kg of chicken breast fillets (hopefully these same 250g ones) - was offered as an upsell for £13.65. Seemed a competitive price per KG based on this thread and given that you can't combine this offer with free delivery unless spending over £75.
5 packs of smoked bacon (350g) - 99p each as it was an offer on the site.
2 x fillet steaks for £7.99 - seemed a competitive price against the supermarket.

£1 for delivery using code STEAK1D.

Used a spare email address so I'll await the spam.

The prices are great but the quality of the meat is questionable - I ordered the £55 hamper and the steaks were really poor - extremely tough and very small. The chicken sausages were the worst part - tasteless and chewy, they need a lot more seasoning to be worth buying. The mince and turkey/chicken weren't bad though, so this deal is ok considering it's for the chicken breasts - that's the only saving grace. I wouldn't order from them again.
clairelouxxx
8 Mar 16 1 #309
I have had meat from MF and can say from experience that it's cheap imported chicken from Lithuania and they may wax lyrical about conditions and welfare but UK regulations do not apply outside of the UK and therefore it's a pile of tosh.

I'll stick to ordering from a real butcher like Barrons of Beef as their meat really is top quality and exactly what they say it is with full traceability and from farms in the UK unless they state other wake. Seriously you get what you pay for when it comes to meat and if you are happy paying next to nothing for your meat you really have to think how it an be bred, reared, slaughtered, brought to market, imported from another country and all for less than a quality butcher charges. It isn't because the butcher is expensive it's because he doesn't sell the cheap imported cr*p.

I used to buy this a lot myself, it's very good value. But don't get delusions of a premium product just because that's how they've marketed it, it isn't. It is still cheap chicken, and it is still Lithuanian chicken with questionable farming practice. EU farming does tend to be better than most international farms we got a lot of chicken from (Thailand, South America etc) but it still isn't as good as British.
Saying that I do still buy their red tractor chicken breasts, because even after what I said above it is still very good value, I'm just hugely cynical of the company because of their gross overselling tactics.

Local i know, but in Bristol i use Bristol meat machine, goes to local market and in Cornwall & Bath, think it's £22 or £23 but huge breasts (pardon the pun! lol) get some amazing deals from them.<3

Just wanted to add support to these guys. We had a large pack delivered (mixed pack) a couple of days ago. One of the chicken packs wasn't sealed properly - so wasn't fresh. A quick mail to support, a photo of the label and I'm getting a new one delivered today. No hassle.

The food quality - I've been really happy with. We'd normally use Macro for Chicken (£20 for 5Kgs), which many might not have access to. The only key difference between these are the size of the breasts. Two big macro breasts vs 3 (when bagging up to freeze) for Muscle Foods.

So thumbs up from me.

Size is immaterial when dicing or slicing for recipes and sandwiches etc..

It is when you have portion sizes for meals and you need to bag and freeze them prior to cooking. Or didn't you take that into account and you happily eat 2.5Kgs of chicken breasts before it goes off? Honestly no idea what point you're really trying to make here! Of course when you have your chicken to cook and are doing a "slice and dice" meal - the size of the breast doesn't make much difference! However we also roast/marinate/BBQ our chicken breasts and one of the muscle food ones isn't enough, yet one of the larger macro ones is. It wasn't a complaint but an observation.

And my post was not a criticism but a point of information, but smaller portion sizes could be better for you.

I had 15kg delivered 2 days ago and I must say I will definitely look to order more in the future really decent breasts nice to cook and are very tasty! I don't bother with water injected supermarket chicken I normally buy cosco or visit my local butchers but I think I have now find a new supplier.
