What do we reckon to this as a deal? I just watched some reviews on YouTube and it looks like a great camera for what I require in a camera.
Any others at this price point offer better value?

amazing camera. The kit lens will not do it justice..... if buying look up the Olly / Panny primes & f2.8 pro Zooms.
Great Camera. I compared it with the G7 and I preferred that because it has a better viewfinder.. but this is a smaller more compact camera if suits your needs then this is a great deal.

I noticed that you can only claim the cashback from 28 days after your purchase date. The cashback promo runs until 30th March, so do you have to have purchased the camera by the end of February, and then make a claim before the 30th of March, or do you just need to make the purchase before the 30th of March? Depending on the answer, you might need to buy it within the next week to actually receive the £50 off.

Nope, the claim date is extended past the promo date. They wont run a promo for a week.

The G7 doesn't have in body stabilisation, but most of the Panasonic lenses have stabilisation built in (including the kit lens). So that would give a similar result.
Also the G7 has 4K video and 4K photo modes.

stabilisation good if want to use one of the many unstabilised lenses for the mount or adapted

23 Feb 16#14
As posted elsewhere, the lenses have the stabilisation.. I have the 45-200 panasonic lens. as for the cashback.. I got £200 when they were doing their 4K double cashback promotion, but they do make you jump through hoops to get it.

Reviews look good and that was at a much higher price point. Was looking at Nikon D3300 for an upcoming holiday but this looks comparable in quality and a lot lighter. Very tempted.

excellent price and deal. I took this with the 100-300mm lens to Wimbledon last year and got some great shots. Its very compact and so much easier to carry around and get into events that big cameras wont (as they look too professional)

Not the best in dark conditions, but excellent in the sun. Also has a great panoramic feature like some phones have, but coupled with a decent short lens , makes excellent panoramas.

Also worth mentioning there is a Panasonic Image App that allows you to control the camera from your phone and copy pictures across to your phone from the camera. Again works well if you want to email them straight after taking them or upload them to facebook etc.

I love my gx7, paid a lot more than this for it in 2014.
I don't have any experience with the 14-42 kit lens (got mine with the excellent 20mm f1.7 prime and the tiny, sharp 12-32 zoom).
Re. in body stabilisation, whilst most panasonic lenses have stabilisation built in, not all do (20mm prime does not, though I expect such a short/fast lens hardly needs it). However a good reason to get the in body stabilisation is to use it with olympus lenses which typically do not have built in stabilisation. I love my olympus 45mm f1.8 prime for example (no stabilisation in lens) , and it's nice having the in body stabilisation for that.
Of course now there's the GX8... but not for this price!

Oh and the extra battery is worth having, battery life on this camera is OK given the size but if going on an all day shoot, or on holiday, the extra battery will be invaluable.

point and shoot? best mirrorless for the price possibly
little bit less potential image quality and AF speed vs a5100/a6000 but otherwise a more complete and better value camera

How does this compare to the Sony A5100 which often comes up here cheaper than this?
TK42 to reserves
23 Feb 16#32
Main advantage of the GX7 over the A5100 is the EVF, but there are a few other advantages listed below:-
2760k dot vari-angle EVF
Sensor-shift image stabilisation
External Flash Shoe
Higher resolution LCD Screen
Faster max shutter speed.
More manual controls.
The A5100 has a larger sensor, better image quality and higher iso capability.

Great camera but if you're planning on using longer lenses you will find the G7 much easier to handle. Big lenses 'overpower' smaller bodies in your hand.

My daughter would like camera. I don't want to buy her anything cheap but is this to much for somebody who doesn't know great deal about cameras or is it a good starting point? Also if it's battery operated, can they last awhile....

23 Feb 161#33
I wouldn't call this is a starter camera as it's quite advanced similar to entry level (or maybe more) SLRs. It can be used in auto mode where you have different scene selections and then move on to more manual modes as you progress. Battery life is not great and good enough for 350 photos approx, there is a spare included which is more than sufficient.

An interesting observation I made today. This Panasonic GX7 is a 3 year old model and launch price was £899 and the Sony A6000 launched in 2014 with a price of £650
The Sony is still selling in the region of 420-450 and commands a high price on the well known auction site. Just saying as both these cameras always come up for comparison.

Not sure if this helps, but DXOMark test lots of different lenses with various cameras, and post their 'scores' on their site too. Here is a link to the lenses being tested against this camera: Lumix GX7 lenses

that depends what you need and what your budget is
to extend the range of subjects able to be photographed at best value then 45-150mm probably but obviously not best choice for everyone
lukewalker48
28 Feb 16#43
Yes, choosing extra lenses is a difficult question as it depends on many criteria; what you want to shoot (&is it moving fast?), how far away you will be, what lighting conditions, will you have opportunities to change lenses mid shoot, how much do you want your kit to weigh and how big, how important image quality and bokeh etc are, and finally what budget do you have?
