I got the umi Rome for some friends the normal not the x. The screen on that is 720p also but has 3gb ram and 16gb storage. I think the 8gb of storage is too little also the normal has 4g. The problem is they look identical so some people may confuse the 2. Any question iam more than happy answering

Update!! Umi Rome X arrived after 14 days. The handset has exceeded my expectations in everyway, build quality and camera are superb at this price point and the latter is particularly strong with macro shots and surprisingly sharp detailed photos when indoors! The screen and sound from the external speaker I would describe as good and the battery has turned out to be a real surprise as it's only rated at 2500mah and is so far 7h 20min on screen time after a full charge with 15% remaining this is equal to a tablet and way better than I expected. I would say that this phone under normal usage will provide 6-8h onscreen this is probably due to the fact that the Rome x is a deep sleeper after running cpu spy overnight the battery had not dropped whatsoever and spent the entire time in deep sleep. After some reading in the itailaian forums It turns out the Rome x is probably the better purchase than the original Rome which was floored by poor touch screen sensitivity and woefull battery life which is not the case with the X hands up to Umi for learning from there mistakes. I have the doogee x5 an excellent budget phone with the same specs (belive me folks this can do everything you throw at it) which I purchased for the same price and this handset hands down destroys it. Only problem is I brought this for the wife so feel I feel outdone now.....:-) Any questions just ask

Received mine yesterday and its very good!!! All the way to Northern Ireland from China in 9 days. Build quality is very good for a phone that cost 43 quid!! Apps run smoothly, video and picture quality good. Some nice shots of my son. There was an issue of when I received it I ran a malware scan and the 360 security app found 2 threats to do with the keyboard which it removed and no threats found now.
I had a Samsung Note 2 and a Note 4 before a car ran over my note 4 :disappointed: This phone is not far off . Battery seems to be going to last the full day. All in all Im happy with my choice!! Just concerned that one of my apps is in Chinese and I don't know what it is!!

Mine finally arrived and it doesn't work. It wont charge or switch on. Battery was already installed and I noticed some minor marks on the back of it so maybe a returned unit. The first thing I noticed when I took it out of the box was the weight of it, it feels very heavy and the weights seems to be all at the front (glass side) so it feels off balance...if that makes sense...also a quick look inside the cover and it all looks a bit low quality and I don't think the phone would last that long, mine didn't make it across the sea from China. Now I've seen it I don't want another one so I have asked for a refund. It might look the part at first glance but it's doesn't even come close to a branded phone.

All i'll add is that these Chinese phones are great value for money...but....if anything goes wrong and you need to send it back to Banggood its a right arseache to get a refund as i'm in dispute with them over a Doogee phone that i sent back and they never received it. Great phones...poor/unhelpful service if anything goes wrong.

Banggood are fine in my experience and incidentally my Rome x has already been shipped:) This new generation of budget china smartphones all seem to be working just fine (unlike older models...) although Umi have stretched the truth about some of the specs I would say it is a safe bet this will be a competent handset and for this price you cannot go wrong
Hope this helped

Anyone recommend a sub £100 alternative with 4g and better battery life? Screen size not important. Huawei P8 or Moto G probably best bets?

Shipping is almost always free from banggood, and as long as you don't pay extra for faster shipping you are very unlikely to get caught in the customs, they usually mark it as under 20£ which is not subject to customs...

Quick question is it better to pay in US dollar on in £, I have got Halifax clarity what's the best to pay lowest charges
thanks

select USD not GBP (so $58.99) then pay with PayPal if you have a card linked to your pp account choose to pay with that. Visa or equivalent will do the conversion for you for a much better rate.

Thanks for the honest info m8. It seems like the battery is the only real issue here but guess I already new that. Have to say my doogee x5 (similar specs) has impressed me with it's battery life but that has a smaller display. I believe the Rome x will have marginally better autonomy due to the less powerful cpu but probably not all that much. The Rome x sacrifices battery for its looks and build quality where as the Doogee x6 and Homtom ht7 have similar specs with larger battery but humdrum looks. As the Rome X is for the missus I hope I've done the right thing......
If anyone wants a great all rounder (bar the camera) then go for the Doogee x6!

Personally I don't use it but I have a family member who uses it and a few friends. But to answer the questions the camera probably on par with any decent 8mp to 13mp sensor. I would describe it as good as moto g 2nd gen if not better but not as good as the 3rd gen 13mp sensor if that helps. Regarding battrey again I don't use it but the people that use this phone are no way classified as heavy users and last them a day. It will probably provide 2 to 2 and half of screen on time on wifi doing the normal social media, streaming and browsing. It wouldn't last me the day but fir medium to light work will last you the day. There has been a new update not a official ota but you can download from needarom that has better battery but it breaks the compass. The official ota hasn't been released yet but I did it for a friend of mine and he said battrey has improved.

The battery life on my normal Umi Rome is dreadful with wifi or 3G or 4G on using it for light to medium tasks I get less than 6 hours of life, I don't know whether it's the same with this model, people are complaining a lot on Umi's Forum.

The 'proper' Rome has the new MediaTek MTK6580 which is the one you call normal I believe. There is much discussion whether this has an IPS screen or AMOLED. Do you have any idea which? Also, I read no OTG support, can you confirm this too please?

the 'proper' Umi Rome has the mediatek mtk6753 soc adding 4g capabilities. Also the Rome X does not have the amoled display of the Rome.
ssjinzo to UncleStan
23 Feb 16#15
Also it adds more ram 3gb instead of 1gb on the x and also adds more storage 16gb instead of 8gb on the x. But the design is the same
ssjinzo
23 Feb 161#13
I personally belive it's ips I don't think it is AMOLED if it is it is very poor as the blacks are not completely black still a good screen either way. Just know what you getting I had a feeling it wouldn't be AMOLED in all fairness so it wasn't a disappointment. Also it's only a 2 touch multi touch display not a 10 point that's mentioned on the specs
UncleStan
23 Feb 16#9
Currently own the Doogee x5 which sports the same mediatek soc and ram configuration and I can tell you it never stutters! So don't believe the hype about octacore cpu's and huge amounts of ram that you think is necessary imho we have surpassed the need for more power on these devices as let's face it android apps run on a shoestring. Only thing to watch out for is this is not a 4g device and the battery is rated at 2500mah which is below the recommended standard for a 5.5" phone of 3000mah.

23 Feb 161#7
Good price but not sure about spec being up to it with regards to battery ,resolution for a 5.5". But quality finish. I brought the UMI iron via Amazon a month ago and keep telling everyone I meet if we are having a conversation about phones that if they have Apple shares(quality product and OS but over priced)they should be off loading them asap as these Chinese made phones are quality build at affordable prices and if your like me and like new things  you don't mind spending the monies and changing rather too often
