NowTV is pretty damn lazy and they're yet to add subtitles to their movies / entertainment packs so you see. Like, what the hell, subtitles are considered essentials for movies/shows either due to hearing loss or to watch at night (audio at minimum).

I've requested subtitles ever since the early days of NowTV and they still don't have. That's quite impressive. lol

Good stuff...
I'm still waiting for my £10 credit from the NowTV offer on psn, but a spare box for upstairs and 3 months of UK Gold should soften the blow.
Thanks for posting.

Sky is just crap, sports has become worthless as hardly anything on all moved over to BT sports, the usual entertainment package price been put up to £30 per month, are they serious, nothing great to watch, plus trying to recoup the cost of the premier league from all other customers. I wouldn't be surprised they don't have subtitle's as probably want you to move over to the full box paying £30 a month for the same channels

These black boxes don't seem that much of a improvement over the white ones but they do load things faster for me anyway with plex, plus a usb port to charge stuff  worth it for the box alone.

If they had a box with a free app to watch videos then it'd defeat the purpose of NowTV. :stuck_out_tongue:

True, they could offer it as a added bonus to watch your home movies etc, not everyone downloads video files off the internet, some just like the convenience of it being in one place with no faffing about which will be the majority of there customers I'd expect

Well its not rubbish because I posted it as thats what happened with my white box. I cancelled the contract and a few months later when I attempt to access the mentioned services they are not available. Just because you had a different experience, does not make my stated one rubbish?

Fair enough it may not be the case of all.... I would reckon they monitor dormant paying users and cleanse access where they set fit. It is SKY TV at the end of the day and they know how to minimise service load and maximise revenue.

Unfortunately it seemed to go out of stock almost as soon as I posted that they were back in, sorry. I expect they only had a few. At least you can back order them (provided you have an account). It will let me back order up to two without taking payment (until they are available), can probably back order more if you are prepared to pay in advance...

Back order is quite a nice feature of shop to, more sites (looking at you Amazon) should offer it.

Can anybody suggest anything for Netflix please?

I'm looking for something other than Sky for my aged Mother as I am truly sick to death of the bartering at the end of contracts and their poxy bundles. Why not just give the customer the best price, for what they want to watch?

She watches History channels, Animal Planet, Discovery channels, Nat. Geographic & something called C.I. (Crime/Investigation).

My Mother is not internet/computer savy, but she wields a tv controller better than any US politician with an engraved gun. And she makes lovely tea.

Any help would be great kind folks.

Hi can someone explain what "plex" is in lay mans terms pleaseee
dragon2611 to scarecrow1960
22 Feb 16 #50
It's a media server, you run it on a computer that has media content (Movies, TV episodes/ Home videos music.etc) and then you can get Plex clients that connect to it to play back that media.

Also supports DLNA if it's on your local network so if you have a smart TV.etc that also supports then the movies.etc your plex server has should also show up on that.
deadcert to scarecrow1960
22 Feb 16 #67
It's like your own Netflix - you need a computer on your network with it installed, which acts as a server. You can then access all your movies, music & pics in a Netflix style way. I also automatically back up my phone pics to it too.

If you're not tech savvy it might be confusing to get up & running, but once it's setup it's fantastic.

I've not heard of it from anyone else, and I have a box that still works fine despite never having been used for anything other than the free 2 week trial and Plex for a year or so since then.

I'd be interested to hear if others have been 'cut off' too - it may be that your box is faulty or corrupt?

I've got one of these boxes and use it to watch catch up tv upstairs sometimes. I have a Virgin Media box in the sitting room as well. I'd like to get one of the boxes for my daughter (who lives elsewhere) but just want to check a couple of things.

Where my daughter lives, the house owner has Sky tv downstairs and my daughter has an extra box in her room. However, she says that she is not able to catch up with, ie, Eastenders, using the box in her room. Seeing that the sitting room downstairs has the main Sky box, would she be able to use one of these boxes alongside the extra box in her room? Mine plugs into the back of my tv with an HDMI cable, but I don't know how Sky boxes are set up - would she need to plug this box into the place where her current Sky box lead is, or would the box connect directly to the Sky box (and then you'd connect to the internet downstairs)? Thank you.
danmed to Sophiasky
22 Feb 16 1 #55
It has nothing to do with the sky box she currently has. Aslong as her TV has another HDMi socket then it plugs in to that and then connects to the internet. It's a completely seperate service to a normal Sky subscription and needs no interaction with a normal Sky box.

I've got 4 boxes running Plex, without a Now TV sub and have had them running for over a year. Not sure Sky can even do what you're saying it's not the way the box works.
You're find its one of the following:
1.Old Software needs updating- Leave it on for a day or so to get updates.
2.Its not linked to your Internet properly, check your settings.
3.Your Internet is down, call BT/Sky/Talktalk/whoever.
4.If in doubt do a factory reset on it.
Further information available on the official Now TV Forum.
To be fair to Sky whilst I'm not a fan of the contracts for Satellites I feel the boxes are brilliant. I used to use a PI with XBMC but my wife found it fiddly, this is a much better option and the price is great.

They've definitely done something different here. They DO normally just write sold out or stock zero. But they've completely removed the page and searching for NOWTV or NOW TV doesn't produce a single search result. Maybe they've just had enough of it!
ST3123 to monz87
22 Feb 16 #72
It did show up as sold out before they removed it. Shopto is kind of weird in how they list things as sometimes you can back order items that aren't in stock other times they just say sold out like this did and then sometimes they pull the link altogether.

I would be extremely surprised if they have given up on selling these altogether. More likely they are probably fed up of receiving enquiries about when they will be in and that so just pulled the listing till they have more to sell....

The new boxes have no form of video out other than HDMI, so if you have a set with no HDMI like a CRT or early LCD sets/projectors you are better off sticking to the white box, which at least has an optional RCA (composite) connection.

To be honest, so few people fall into those categories I can see why they removed the analogue connection but still a shame for the few that need it....

I got one of these from JS for my parents so they can access iplayer, and other catch-up services.
Thought I`d set it up for them, but there`s no way to get an account without adding a credit or debit card.

So I asked NowTv Chat and they said you have to buy one of their passes before you can access catch-up and that`s why you have to register a card.

I asked two different agents because it wasn`t what I understood, is this how it works?
ST3123 to johntugwell
25 Feb 16 #95
Sadly, you do have to add credit card details, it has been over a year since you could create an account without them BUT the key thing is you have to provide the details, you DONT have to be charged! You just sign up for the 14 day trial of the entertainment or movies pass and provided you cancel before the time is up you don't get charged but your account stays active so you can continue to watch catch up and anything but the paid now tv channels.

Now TV will not actively make people aware of this as it is in their interest to sell the passes.

Noclouds
25 Feb 16 #97
A little confused by some of the comments. I picked up one of these from Sainsbury's, last week, and haven't opened it, yet. Do I need to enter credit card details if I don't intend to use the entertainment pass? I bought it to use with my computer monitor, which I have a DVI to HDMI connector for. As far as I can see, there isn't an audio out socket, so I could need a breakout box from the HDMI to give me a separate audio out. Would appreciate any thoughts and advice on those questions, thanks! Adding heat, though I'll keep the Sainsbury's-bought box, like easy returns, if need be.
lilbeastie to Noclouds
28 Feb 16 #99
You do need credit card details to set up a NowTV account, as without an account the box won't start. You don't need an active subscription though - cancel before the trial is up and you're all set.

Note that you need a credit card whether or not you have a pass - it's needed to set up the NowTV account.

As for an audio out - you'd be better off with the old, white box. I use one of my old white boxes with a monitor & speakers too - the box is a lot slower than the newer one but it works fine to stream 720p from my Plex server.

I really like youview boxes as PVRs, I use two the BT T2100 500GB and the Huawei DN371T 500GB and they are both really nice to use with a great user interface and much faster performance than the ancient old Virgin Media Tivo, which now barely gets switched on.

But and it's a big one, they are IMHO sadly quite limited as a streaming iptv and apps solution. They cover most of the catch up TV services well but apart from that it's a bit sparse. The Now TV app is pathetic as it doesn't even offer the whole service (just Movies, no Entertainment) and you can forget about things like Plex (which can be easily added to Now TV boxes), Amazon Video etc.

It's a real shame as Youview had the potential to bring the PVR and streaming / IPTV services together in one nice user friendly whole but IMO they have largely failed in that objective though they are still great PVRs just with basic catch up type apps.
