I got my Nokian WR D4 set from Blackcircles last winter for £36 each fitted. Still have them on now since the tread is so deep it takes ages to wear down in summer and braking distance is still very good

Thanks, just read your post in full. Funnily enough, I'm a Mazda 6 owner too! Anyway, when you add these tyres to the basket, they say DOT 2013/14, so a couple of years old

I worked for one of the biggest (the biggest by some measurements) tyre company in the world back in the 1990 into 2000's and I would schedule Nokian branded tyres for production based on an arrangement which were exactly the same tyres as the premium brand other then the stampings that were installed into the moulds branding Nokian! I'm not saying this would defiantly be the case here or know not if this arrangement still exists but I would say there is a chance these tyres are as good as the A1 Premium brand tyre you would all be screaming whoopee do over if they were sold at that price.

You would have to read my first review, post number 5. Sorry I still had it in my head but quite a few posts put after my first one where I said about needing some winter tyres this time last year. I rang the importer who was advertising them at a very good price, not quite as good as this deal but they were manufactured in 2012, so nearly three years old. Rubber deteriorates with age that's all.

just try reading the reviews. some people say 100% (on a tyre review who says that ? ) then other people say that they are awful and give 30-50% !!!

it seems there are two tyres called the same thing and earlier ones were good until they were 'modified' by manufacturer.

I don't know these tyres personally but have lived and driven a lot in Germany, Austria etc. I wouldn't give ANY tyre 100%

Nokian winter tyres are excellent , I've used them for two winters on my 5series , this is a good deal but you won't need winter tyres for much longer , so they are clearing stocks cheap.

There are so many factors that affect stopping distance.......all the car manufactures will happily tell you their cars claimed (under laboratory conditions) results for 0 to 60 mph/the mpg/load space/emissions or a hundred other marketing gimmick figures. But stopping distances are barely given a mention!
The stopping distance is always going to be contensiuos due to driver reaction time but I believe there should be a standard test and the results published with the same prominence as the mpg.
Yes....the brand of tyre effects stopping, yes.......tyre pressure also, yes....condition of suspension, yes.....tyre wear has a big part to play, yes....road conditions come into it, yes.....temperature makes a difference, yes....load weight of the vehicle has a major effect ect.
But what we all need is clear and simple facts that are tested in real world conditions to make a judgement call.

Very good tyres, a lot of the professional Scandinavian tests are based on tyres bought from retail outlets rather than those supplied by the manufacturer, the chaps up there are educated enough to do do this. They would anyway soon notice as they use the same tyres on their own cars.
Just remember that when you brake you will stop a lot faster than the muppets behind you running on ' summer ' tyres. so you can cause accidents. To stop this winter tyres are mandatory during winter in Scandinavia.

They were originally part of the larger Nokia group, yes, the same one that made mobile phones so the name is not really that surprising.

Having owned a set of Nokian winter tyres and covering over 40,000 miles on them in all conditions (they are really awesome in winter conditions) on a FWD turbocharged car and that the tyres still had 4mm and 6mm on them when the car went to the scrap-man, I can confirm that they are made out of similar materials to Nokia mobile phones.

Read the reviews. I would have bought these had they not been so old. They were at the top of my list but in the end I bought the Avon Ice Touring ST which I couldn't fault at all.

Who do you guys get to fit these tyres? Don't the big garages like National/ATS refuse to fit if they haven't been purchased there?

No the the blame goes to both the French and the Germans. Sainte Etienne (yes I checked the spelling on the can :smiley: ) and our good friends at Aldi for importing it and selling it at a good price.

No they are not owned by the VAG group.

But there is a good comparison to be had. The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport is the world's fastest road car built by VAG. But a Polo 1.2 is clearly not as well engineered or as fast.

But I suspect you were pushing towards the VAG group emissions scandel which is nothing like the linked story.

I think you need to read it again. They are not trying to sell you a tire that is different. They had tyres that were made to win tests to highlight the brand. You weren't buying them you were buying a different model. It's marketing. It's far less of a scandel than the BigMac!

By looking at other sizes and prices I would say it's a glitch but who knows.

It's probably not a glitch. I was looking for a set of winters early last year when I was off to Germany and Austria as its compulsory there to have either all season or winter tyres. I rang up the company who is the sole importer of Nokian tyres. Not sure how this company has come by them unless they are another importer or distributer but when I asked how old the tyres were they were manufactured in 2012.......can't remember the month but I didn't want to put tyres on my car that what 3 years old so bought some Avons instead.

Just a point to some of you who think winter tyres are a waste of time I can tell you without them I would have been stuck literally. I have Mazda 6 diesel which although puts a lot of weight over the front tyres its absolutely crap in snow and you cannot fit snow chains to the car without fitting wheel spacers, possibly longer studs as well. The winter tyres were amazing. Going uphill with fresh snow on the ground from a standing start, no issues. A bit scary in Austria when the police had pulled someone up, or they had got stuck and was being made to put his chains on. My car just gripped. Thick snow in the car park no problem at all. They just stick like **** to a blanket. Amazing grip. These Nokians though have a very good review and if you don't mind them being old which they probably are, if they have been stored ok they should be fine.

Why would anybody buy a tyre that sounds like a mobile phone and has news reports like this about them

Have 215/55/16 on my vectra all last year quiet on motoway and grip well in the wet..
Running Nokian WR D4 205/55 R16 Winter tyres with a rating of A for wet weather.
Had good fun in heavy snow up in scotland never got stuck once.Also good in heavy rain and surface water.
