So can anyone who has this tell me more about the stand. In particular...
Is it of any practical use, or it just a plastic gimmick?
and/or
Is it essential to the game, and make it more enjoyable/easier to play?

It isn't really essential. It makes playing a little more comfortable as you don't have to hold up the console yourself. Some people find the controls uncomfortable in this game, which is why the stand is included, but I thought they were fine.
