Just saw this in my local Sainsbury's (Newport Isle of Wight) and thought it was a decent price, yes I know it's Apple and they are overpriced, yes I know it's old tech, yes I know 16gb is bordering on criminal amount of storage, yes I know it could be a wild goose chase but thought I'd share for anyone who is looking for one of these and may be popping in to their local Sainsbury's.

I didn't buy it as we already have 2 iPad's in the house but haven't seen this cheaper anywhere else

As an owner of several great android tabs (2013 note is probably still the best imo) the IOS eco system is leaps and bounds ahead. Even my Surface 3 gets less play than my Mini2.

Their watches, the computers, hell even their wires are overpriced tosh, but they do Tablets better than anyone else sadly.

Probably talking to myself here, but this device doesn't run nearly as well on iOS 10, nowhere near as smooth, runs out of RAM on some sites that work great on iOS 9. Booting up with smart cover closed gave me black screen on opening with unresponsive home button.

Full erase and reset didn't change a thing either, in fact it seemed worse, luckily they are still signing 9.3.5 so it was easy to downgrade.

Seems to me they had phones more in mind than tablets with iOS 10, didn't like a single thing about it.

Updated mine by mistake, didn't have my glasses on

Oh, is it the amazon marketplace one? I saw that and it looks like a US one? The retaier is CAJ accessories based in Brooklyn, so I think the iPad would be a US one. Don't think it would bother me, but because it's for my mum, I thought I'd stick with a uk retailer.

Just spoke to Sainsburys customer services via webchat, said there's one at Winnersh Store, King Street Lane (0118 977 5947).
Check they still have one in store, then ring a John Lewis store and indicate that you are looking to buy a ipad air, but noticed that they being sold in store by Sainsburys for £212.64,
Inform them of the store and they'll pass it to their in store price match team which will give you a call back with 24 hours (was 4/5 hours for me, depending how busy they are),
you can either pick it up from the John Lewis store or they might send it out to you.
The "3 year guarantee included at no extra cost" is until 24th Feb, then I think it go back to 2 years, plus for an extra £30 you can get 3 years accidental damage cover on top.
When I got mine from JL, they offered to post it to me from their distribution centre, so you might not need to have one too local.

It's accidental damage cover, depends on what it covers and what the excess is,
I've taken it, for £10 a year, I'm sure the parts and labour would be more then £10 (Plus any excess) to get Apple to repair it.

I have a MacBook Pro, a Mac mini (work) a iPhone, an Apple Watch, and an iPad - I also have an android tablet, an android phone (work) a LG urbane Android wear watch and a Windows PC and the IOS devices out perform the non IOS ones in most cases, I said on a different thread about the Apple Watch that IOS devices just seem to work, no messing about, the ecosystem and hardware all seem to match each other with no messing about - the only thing that is utter garbage on is ITunes, which is a load of tosh, overly restrictive and sharing stuff between IOS and non IOS devices is a hassle
Paul1972UK
16 Feb 16 #223
Actually if you try their stuff, you will find that the reason they charge what they do is down to the quality of their items, as you have stated their tablets are the best.. (Im an android user myself) and so are their computers, Ive just converted to using a mac, albeit a second hand one, but id never go back to buying a windows machine! Apple can charge a premium price, because their stuff is better.. simple!

16 Feb 16 #222
I'm not sure I agree any more. The main reason I continue to use my iPad is because the Daily Telegraph's digital edition includes the crossword in the IOS version, but not Windows 10. Our other tablets all run Windows 10, which we find altogether more grown up (and I'm constantly irritated by the lack of expand-ability and connectivity with the Apple products, they are also grossly overpriced, but have the sexy badge on the back to justify the price).

My fellow bargain hunters, voted hot and just a word of advice - once you have a stable software version just stick to it and not upgrade the new software will have new features but will ultimately slow the device. I am still able to use my old iphone 4 with 8.4.2 and will never update the software as I know from past experience that ios updates just slow the thing down.

is really good - we have 2 iPads at home (an iPad Air2 and an iPad mini 4 used by and 8 year old and a 5 year old respectively) these cases are really robust, the inbuilt screen protector is much better than similar ones I have used too and is actually usable

Mine was ios8.1 out of the box and worked fine, after an update to 9.2.1 the WIFI also works fine now so it could be a router issue, or always the possibility of a hardware fault with the iPad I suppose
DonkeyKonk
12 Feb 16 #178
It was 8.1 out of the box. I played about with it for half an hour, then updated to 9.2.1. Both seemed fine until I had this WiFi issue.

I do think it is a possible problem with my router, but its a shared router and I can't reset it at the moment.
I have managed to tether off my phone so could reset the ipad, but even after doing this it will not let me sign in to my usual internet service.

Odd that this Xperia tablet I am typing on is fine on that router though and i am a bit concerned. Does seem to be an issue.

Why "sadly"? Apple Watch, I agree doesn't seem to have the charm of their other products (own one, £638 steel/milanese/sport band - regret it!). Computers... I've only used Macbook Pros, and prefer them massively to anything else even though I'm a Windows guy for desktops. AND YOU FORGOT PHONES. iPhones are unparalleled in my opinion but I came to terms with the fact the benchmark/megapixel/screen resolution fans are always going to think iPhone users are insane.

If your local store has a few in stock you may want to do John Lewis price match - you get a 3yr guarantee then too but probably only advisable to do if your sainsburys has a few left as I did it today and by the time they looked at my price match application the store had no stock and they are refusing to honour it
DonkeyKonk
12 Feb 16 #174
Right,

Possible Issues... (WiFi errors)

I have opened one and left one sealed for now, want to see how good it is etc.

Everything was great the first hour, though I felt it seemed very slightly smoother on the 8.1, but seemed okay enough on 9.2.1.

Really liked the IPlayer App "picture in picture" function.

Anyhow, I started downloading that Minions game, and it cut out half way through. There is still a fair amount of Gb onavailable memory wise.

Now it is showing me my internet connection, but simply refusing to let me in, or rejoin after signing out, turning tablet on and off, etc.

All my other devices are fine. Seems there might be an issue with IOS 9 with WiFi ????

Anyone else have this issue ?

I can't even do a full reset of the device now as it seems to require signing in to my account to do so. I can't as no WiFi.

Apple Photo Library makes it VERY easy to put photos on the Cloud - it keeps thumbnails on the device (so you always see all photos) and pulls the full-resolution copy back when needed.

5Gb is free - 50Gb for £0.79/month

Thanks op, just grabbed a space grey, couldn't have come at a better time, my 2012 nexus 7 is just about done, lol

12 Feb 16 1 #157
I think you get roughly 11Gb free when IOS is first installed. While 16Gb is not perfect it's what I have on my iPhone and has got a LOT better for me recently by moving photos mainly to the Cloud using Photo Library (also Music)

Just to ask...

1.-I presume its working well with IOS 9 ? Or any issues and better to stick with IOS out of box ?

2.- I presume you still get the one year warranted with Apple and you can take it into one of their stores if any issues ? (After Registering product online).
BrianM to DonkeyKonk
12 Feb 16 1 #156
iPad Air 1 runs just fine on current IOS 9.2

Apple Stores will do warranty - You don't even (vitally) need to register! Apple know when any iDevice first activates by connecting to their servers! Apple Stores can access this "first activation" date.

Just sticking up for the iOS fans here, I think this is a great deal. Yeah a new iPad Air is rumored to be released next month, but that does t mean that the Air 2 will suddenly breath it's last and give up.

I have an iPad 3 that's 3 and a half years old but you know what, it still does a mighty good job! It may not be as slick and quick as the newest models, but after spending a bit of time on a Galaxy Tab of similar vintage, personally I'd have the iPad every time. That's just my humble user experience though and everyone is different.

Apple won't do a budget iPhone. Press said the same about the 5C been a budget iPhone, it wasn't.

Great price for the iPad Air (if you don't already own an iPad) battery is all but dead on my iPad 4 (daily charging since release), but 1GB ram again! I've had far too many Safari crashes to stick with 1GB ram, otherwise I'd jump. Need an upgrade, not more of the same, 1GB = a nope, will wait for an Air2 upwards - tempting though, as a new battery is £83.

Heat, this is a great price for a UK model. 16Gb is a little tight, though. Not a problem for movies, music etc - dump them on a wireless hard drive and use Infuse or another app to stream them.

Add something like this keyboard case: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001AQ3YZQ and you have a decent little portable setup.

Originally released in November 2013.

Over two years in tech is pretty old, but I guess this is just about a hot deal. I am definitely one of those folk who believe Apple do cripple older devices (of over 2-3 years) fairly intentionally, having my iPad mini and IPad 2 about which accepted updates which have made them virtually useless for browsing etc, (unusably slow)
I only keep them as still for video services, and Sky Sports TV, which, after waiting about a minute to start up work OK.

Most people don't seem to see this! A friend who I sold my iPad 2 to still finds it just as good as when she first acquired it.

Unlike most Android devices - where support runs out pretty swiftly - Apple keep supporting devices 5 years old (and beyond!)

I currently own a 64Gb iPad Air and I would say that £212 is a good price for the 16Gb model! If you can find any!

Hi s24adm,

Sure - you could probably use something like this to store videos.

I remember having a lot of magazine subscriptions through Newsstand, and it was simply frightening how much space they needed - I think GQ alone took up something like 12GB. Okay, you don't need to download them all and keep them on the device, but - if you're willing to pay for content to get the most out of the device - then deleting and re-downloading stuff will get quite painful.

Furthermore, I don't think iOS will let you move apps onto your external storage? So you'll still be limited by the internal storage for games and media through apps (e.g. offline Amazon Prime Video), which makes even £213 for a two-year-old tablet seem like a bit of a poor deal.

This seems to be the iPad Air (1) which went on sale in late 2013. It's been available for £319 for over year now, since they released the iPad Air 2 in late 2014.

The iPad Air 3 - which was not released according to the usual annual schedule in late 2015 - is expected to be announced on March 15, 2016. It will probably be in shops by late March / early April, probably starting at £399 for the 16gb version (the grand-son/daughter of the model in this post).

Two points:

1.
16gb is really very restrictive with iPads, even more so than with iPhones. You can expect about 11gb to be available out of the box (since some storage is consumed by the operating system). It's fine for light web browsing and streaming, but anything involving media - such as magazines and videos - will become very annoying with only 11gb.

2.
This model is now two-and-a-bit years old. It should receive iOS 10 this year, and iOS 11 next year. But Apple will probably move to integrate more closely features like TouchID (the fingerprint reader on the home button) and 3D touch (where pressing harder on the screen previews emails, etc), which were first introduced with the iPad Air 2. You may not want or need these features, but they are worth considering in terms of the long-term life of the tablet.

All told, this is a great price if you are happy with the storage and just need a tablet for web browsing, organising stuff (email, calendar) and streaming videos (Netflix, Amazon Prime Video). If you are going to play games, store media on the device (e.g. for long-haul flights) or want to guarantee the long-term ownership of the tablet, you might be happier after spending a bit more on the iPad Air 2 today, or the iPad Air 3 next month.

Hope this helps.

Never understood people who claim this - if this happened to me I'd assume something went wrong in the upgrade and tried restoring the device again.
My 1st gen iPad Mini is spec for spec, basically an iPad 2 (early 2011 spec) and it's still getting updates 5 years on. 9.2.1 was the most recent and it runs like it did when new, never noticed any slow down whatsoever.
