The Gen8 microserver appears to have cashback available again. Though the page lists the end date for the cashback as 31st January, if you download the claim form linked on that page (and here: https://www.serversplus.com/pdfs/ms55_feb16mar16.pdf ) the dates are 1st Feb to 31st March 2016.

EDIT: They have now updated the dates on that page too.

EDIT: Thanks to LiamSmith78 for this code for free next day shipping:

Do you have more than one device in your home? I have a PC, laptop, phone and media player. Having a server means that they all have a single point of storage available any time. If I want to download something? The server runs a torrent client so it can download while everything else is turned off.

My PC and laptop do hourly file history backups to it as well.

Nothing aside from ECC RAM support really.

It's just a SFF PC with lots of room for storage options. Although the GPU is absolute crap so you wouldn't want to use it as a desktop.
GoNz017 to thermomonkey
16 Feb 16 2 #10
It would make a very slow crappy PC, very good budget server, especially when you hunt down a 4gb stick of HP ram (for around £20) that people sell off after buying an 8gb or more kit.
refaey to thermomonkey

ECC RAM Support.
iLO Management Console, you can read about it here.
This is basically designed to work as a headless machine (i.e. no keyboard or monitor) for light work (i.e. home server, development or test machine, etc etc).

I personally bought one in December and use it as a NAS and a host for multiple virtual machines. I upgraded the memory to 16gb, added four 4tb drives and installed FreeNAS (a fork of FreeBSD with a web interface for dummies).

Hope that helps.

the *really* old graphics card and the total lack of sound card, along with the 4 hard drive bays and remote monitoring. It's basically a "PC focused on being a server" rather than being a server I guess.
However it will happily run windows if you want a business desktop (ie no games ever)

Guys (and gals), at present I use my i5 PC (GeForce 960 gtx card) to run plex (as well as a PC). It generally transcodes up to three things at a time (to two Amazon Fire sticks on the same network and and my iPad while overseas). Would this be up to the task to do the same or is it more for NAS use?
defard
16 Feb 16 #29
I'm thinking of replacing my current NAS (basically a seagate external drive that connects to a network) with a proper RAID setup (thinking two 4tb drives in mirror mode). Would this be a smarter move than buying a dedicated NAS box?
refaey to defard
16 Feb 16 #31
Yes, and I highly recommend it.
I upgraded from a Zyxel NSA325 with 6tb storage to this.
The processor in most NAS boxes is quite slow, this one is fast.
A NAS box is rarely upgradeable, this one is (processor, memory, space for 5 hard disks, maybe 7 if you push with a mod).
You can use this for other purposes, like hosting VMs.
You can use this for transcoding, most NAS drives can not do this.
A NAS box is obviously easier and more straightforward to use. This one is a bit harder, but no rocket science.
nvirtue
16 Feb 16 #30
I have a similar question to the above posters; would this be decent for a Plex server? Could it handle 4K transcode or multiple 1080p transcode?
And for my final stupid question, it says the maximum is 16TB hard drive space. Therefore I assume it will only take a maximum of 4TB drives? (I wanted to buy a couple of 6TB drives or the new Seagate 8TB)
refaey to nvirtue
16 Feb 16 #32
Using two drives will only allow you to use RAID 0 or 1. To use more advanced modes you need more drives.
I moved from hardware Raid to software Raid.
I use ZFS1, which means I get about 9tb of storage from my four 4TB drives with redundency (i.e. if anything happens to one drive, take it out and put another one and you won't lose any data). There is also ZFS2 that allows two drives to go down at the same time without losing any data, but obviously you get less storage space than ZFS1.

Good link if your looking at plex transcoding https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201774043-What-kind-of-CPU-do-I-need-for-my-Server-computer-

it suggests a single stream about ◦720p/4Mbps: 1500 PassMark and ◦1080p/10Mbps: 2000 PassMark.

I know someone who this model and it can transcode a couple 720p streams. Its benchmark is only 2351, I have just gone for the Dell PowerEdge t20 which is a similar price because of the extra CPU power but the machine is a lot bigger. Its also about £100 after cash back and this has a benchmark of 3186 and can manage 3 720p. But this does depend on file size also so beware.

I've got an 8TB Seagate Archive drive in my N54L that's been running fine for 14months or so, so I would assume one would work in a Gen8.

16 Feb 16 #37
You can add an SSD in the ODD slot fairly easily, just needs a cheap adapter cable. Makes boot up quicker, the OS will feel smoother and it'll leave the other slots free for higher capacity HDDs for storage.

Another 4GB RAM is a cheap and easy upgrade.

I just stuck in the extra RAM (and disks obviously) and it works fine on the HP version of ESXi. Acceptable VM performance with linux desktops, probably not so much with windows...not tried.
RAID works fine on the HP version of ESXi and the fans are very quiet (some people say the fans run loud on proxmox...etc....blah...)
dipsylalapo
16 Feb 16 #44
Don't forget with Plex that it can do Direct Play too.

So if the file format/container/audio are playable natively on the device via the Plex app no transcoding is required and the limit is your internal network (wired or wireless)

I wouldn't bank on a Gen9 Microserver personally, whilst there have been rumours across the internet for what seems like years there hasn't been a shred of anything concrete from HP, at this rate it will be more likely a Gen10 Microserver will appear, this is why I got a 2nd one of these Gen8s in the last run of deals. To be productively running multiple VMs on these well though, IMHO you need a CPU upgrade, RAM and SSD storage. These deals make them cheap to buy, but to get the best out of them you need to spend a fair bit more money.

Still got my N40L with 4GB Ram and a pile of hard drives, replaced the odd with a 250gb drive for the os, also has hacked bios, also replaced the built in nic after the bios & Win 8.1 debacle & also now using a xonar sound card.

All the other drives are handled by MS Storage Spaces, I know initially some people had problems but I've not had a single issue with it (touchwood) & now upgraded the array to Win 10 version so all my non system drives just show up as one big 4tb array!

Mine sits in the cabinet under the TV and is hooked up via vga, it runs plex to stream content to kids Xbox360 & Now TV box and also connected to TV & av amp to play content in the living room.

Great servers brilliant for living room use on a modern unit like this you could use usb sound cards instead of pcie

This will not "play" 4K content, you need a much beefier CPU for that. Plex supports direct play (or whatever it's called), so if the client supports the container/format the 4K file is in, it will just stream it directly as it, and that works perfectly fine.

What "4K" content are you using? I was under the impression that almost nothing was "4K" (apart from a tiny fraction of Netflix and Amazon Prime), almost no devices support it, no optical disc is big enough to store a film, etc, etc.

Btw, did you know that 4K TVs aren't actually high enough resolution to even display 4K ?

Anyway, I'll upgrade to 4K eventually but I'm not willing to spend £9000 (that's not a joke, that's how much it would cost to replace my screen with a 4K one) on something I can't really use.

Definitely! I had a ReadyNas v2 and it was terrible. The web interface was awful, shares management was abysmal, and not once but twice I came home to find the LCD screen saying "Vol C:\ Dead" which not what you want to see! Reboots fixed it both times, but that was the last straw for me.

Get one of these and install XPenology on a USB flash drive and you'll be all set. Excellent software, desktop style web interface and rock solid reliability. I have the N54L version of the Microserver, not the Gen8. I wish I could justify the upgrade, but the only real "upgrade" from the N54L is the ILO interface, and even then I would only use it to do the initial install.

I've read this has got remote software from HP called ILO to access it remotely, however, how can i do that, do i need to get a monitor and USB mouse/keyboard to first configure it.
Or do you need to go into the BIOS to enable ILO, so for that you'd need a keyboard and monitor?

I bought once of these before in an earlier deal, but don't have a monitor, I've plugged a LAN cable from my router into the ILO socket, and then tried to access it using the servername on the tag at the back (starting with ILO....), but it doesn't connect.

I can ping the server on my network via the ILO name, I just can't connect it it via the name or IP address using http://ILOCOMPUTER
Any ideas how to access it remotely without a monitor?

So that would mean then i first need to connect it to a computer monitor and keyboard?

Ebuyer looks ok as the mfr code matchs on the main product page. Only problem I found was the part where the claim form quotes - "Attach proof of purchase (reseller invoice(s)) to the claim form, with qualifying products and HPE part codes circled and make copies for your records."
I have not been able to find on the invoice anywhere which it provides a HPE part code only a QF(quick find) code that links to the product page. Anyone know how this works with ebuyer?

16 Feb 16 #121
For access via iLO - the answer is yes and no... You can simply plug it in and it will get an IP automatically. Then you use the username/password written on the box to access a webpage (of the IP Address). The default DNS name of the iLO is written on the box too.

As for remote control - it will let you do a text interface, or GUI for 30 minutes, but after that it requires an iLO Advanced license. These are pretty spendy!

Your iLO will not be available on the Internet unless you "forward" the port on your router, but I would not recommend doing that as it could leave you open to attacks!

I would say FreeNAS has got a bit of a learning curve for the uninitiated! You would likely be better getting a copy of synology.

This won't be much better - I am not sure if these have Intel Quicksync which can help. I have an old i7 laptop doing my transcoding, and a micro server serves up the data. Actually - reading again, Quicksync does not do h.265 anyhow, so you will struggle with this.

Cheers, I've tried accessing via the DNS name (and also the IP Address found via pinging the DNS name that on the card attached to the server) that but it's not working.
I'm trying http:\\DNSName, and also http:\\192.168.x.x (the IP address from the ping)

I only want to access it from home, not from outside, so i guess i don't need to do port forwarding for that.

I've just no idea why i can't access it from the DNS Name in a URL, but i can see it's on my network as i can ping the the DNS name and get an IP address (which i pressume is the ILO IP Address).

4leafed
17 Feb 16 #153
As most people (myself included) run these 24/7, one of your main considerations in choosing a home server is power consumption. I currently have the N40L and it costs around £50 per year to run 24/7. A beefier processor will consume more power and will be more costly to run. Worth checking and comparing.

yes, 3 is the magic number.
themanwithapc
17 Feb 16 #155
This machine will do that easily but then so will your older PC.

The advantages of this will be the size, ease of swapping drives, power draw and I'm assuming aesthetics.

The PC is likely to be more powerful, offer greater flexibility (assuming your PC can accept more than 4-5 drives) and cheaper as you obviously already have it.

Ultimately it will depend on your needs but I would use this instead of the older PC to serve files. If you wanted transcoding or other things then use the PC.

Something to look at with both options is Unraid. It's a great OS if you have a mishmash of different drives you would like to use.

Can anyone comment what the iLO is like? I've seen somewhere you have to buy an expensive license to be able to manage it remotely?

I'm teetering on pulling the trigger on this. The dell T20 doesn't seem to offer anywhere near as many options.

Is a ram upgrade expensive? I have the N36L microserver that's always just chugged along and may demote that to new microserver backups
garethcamp to sparkie1984
17 Feb 16 #164
iLO is useful for initial setup and remote control across a network, but if you have a screen and a keyboard and the server situated in the home it is a bit overkill, as once setup you probably won't touch it again. iLO licenses can be bought relatively cheaply off eBay (for considerably less than HP charge). I find it useful as I can VPN home and turn servers on and take control if required when away from home.

tek-monkey to kakaniki
17 Feb 16 #167
It depends, 365 is easy but your data lives elsewhere and if your internet goes so do your files, your own server requires time/maintenance but is always in house if needed. I'd probably want both, a local server that backs up to a cloud server to give a little resilience.

Purchased - thanks.

Question:
I have 2x WD Red drives I'm removing from a Readynas Duo. I would like to run XPEnology under ESXI with RAID 1 (mirroring). This seems best to me as I read installing XPEnology on bare metal does not allow for reading HDD temperature. But my question - Do I need a 3rd OS disk for ESXI and the XPEnology VM, or could I do this using a USB drive? If so, what size USB drive would be needed?
aszu to blahmartinblah
17 Feb 16 1 #169
ESXi can boot from USB, but it will not use it as a datastore for storing VMs. If you want to do direct HDD passthrough to xpenology VM, you should get some small SSD or 2.5" HDD (anything > 16GB is fine), install it in DVD bay and use as ESXi boot drive / datastore.
garethcamp to blahmartinblah
17 Feb 16 #170
You can put ESXI on an internal USB or MicroSD card.
blahmartinblah
17 Feb 16 #172
Thanks - that's what I thought. I suppose can probably boot ESXi from a USB drive, but not use it as the datastore like you say. That's a bit of an oversight on my part as I hadn't budgeted for a 3rd disk when I purchased this to replace my Readynas Duo NAS, but I'm sure it will be useful in the future for running other VMs on the Microserver.

really really pondering about this........

I have an N40 microserver and im going to sort out the same thing for my parents.
Im trying to keep the power usage to a minimum, ive measured the power draw from my N40L, and its about 35w.

However i have about 12 old PCs in the garage (mostly P4s), but i bet their power draw is probably much higher (90-100w?)

I just dont know whether to reuse an old PC or buy one of these.
Its £110 extra money but will probably use less power. Anyone advise?

WD Red. Reliable and power efficient.

Ebay. But expect to pay nearly as much or more than the server cost. Xeon's are well over £100. I haven't seen any of the compatible i3's yet. However the i5 3470T is a better option than the i3, but these are mostly shipping from the US from what I've seen, so although they can be under £100 the cost creeps up with shipping and customs on top.

It can help to search by the product code (e.g SR0RK for the i3, SR0RJ for the i5).

No not 'normal' as in a regular Core i-whatever you could pick up from a shop. Aside from the Xeon's it's only certain i3 or i5 models which are compatible, and because these types of CPUs were mainly supplied to OEMs for installation in laptops and cheap PCs you won't generally find them on sale from retailers. How does configuring RAID work? I'd like RAID 1 backups in the future but for the time being I'm only planning on buying one hard drive. Is this possible or do you have to stick with what's setup once a RAID configuration has been set?
cosmicvibes to JJMPSP
19 Feb 16 #214
Just to be clear, RAID isn't a backup. It's redundancy. If you raid fails or your filesystem gets borked, you delete your most precious files, or crypotolocker or some such bites you - then it's all over. RAID can offer performance and availability wins but I wouldn't rely on it as your only copy of your data. Have another external backup, and ideally a third - offsite. I appreciate for many of us the costs of that can be out of reach, but at least do so for the stuff you truly couldn't live without. Fire, theft, lightning... I've seen them take every copy of others data. But thankfully not all happened to me...

Single unRAID® Server Pro Registration key … $129

dwl99 to nickann1
23 Feb 16 1 #279
Freenas is what you're looking for, your microserver will just run as a headless box and you access all the settings via a browser. You'll need a screen & keyboard for the initial setup though. You'll also need a separate boot drive (usually a SSD). If you want to use their fancy-pants ZFS filesystem you'll need to upgrade the RAM to at least 8GB. Server memory is expensive, expect to pay £25 - £30 for a measly 4GB stick.

That is the full extent of my knowledge of this beast, I'm still deciding whether to replace my WD MyBook Live with one. Somebody cleverer will no doubt be along in a moment :-)

Sorry I was too quick to comment without proper testing... I've just tested this more with various 1080p mkv movies (one that is 15Mbps and DTS sound) and it CAN transcode to 1080p 8Mbps fine on my S6 (plex app). For some reason it stutters occasionally when playing in a browser on my PC. Bit odd... but it still definitely watchable. Most of the time when playing at rate on my S6 the transcode rate was around 1.5 which is good, on my PC sometimes dipped under 1 so stuttered, but not all the time of anything. Saying that this is it's limit though because CPU in my Gen8 is 96-98% constantly. Remember there is lots of other factors and if you wanted remote transcode then it all depends on your internet upload speed and routing and destination internet connection latency etc anyway.

Either way the Gen8 is an amazing server and even better that it's so cheap, plus you could upgrade to a faster CPU for around £100 and it would still be great value for money and STILL cheaper than an official Synology NAS plus you can run whatever you want on it, if I get fed up of Xpenology I'll put ESXi or Windows Server on it. That's just my opinion though... interested to hear other people's experiences with transcoding to 1080p.

I do have a class10 micro SD card. I'm just trying to get my head round how I would go about getting the esxi build onto it? Do I just do a straight onto the card or do I have to build it from another media (like building Windows 7 or Server 20xx)

23 Feb 16 #306
You got all the hardware; HDD installed and a spare class 10 SD card.

You just need esxi 6 from vmware (it's free, full features for 60 days) as an ISO. Use Rufus to turn that ISO into a bootable image onto the sd card (or USB stick). You'll need to perform that step on your pc/laptop. Pop the sd card into your gen8 mobo and boot from it. During the install, select that you want to install esxi onto your sd card. Once you've done the initial config for esxi you can disconnect your kvm from it and just interface with the gen8 running esxi via the vsphere client running on in your pc/laptop. You'll then format and configure the HDD you have with vmfs and use that as your datastore for your vm's. Esxi 'OS' as it were stays and runs from the sd card. HTH!

Yes, that's correct, it installs itself to the same as card where you booted from.

Could be lots of reasons why - it didn't actually make it bootable, your using the usb 3 port, your using an inferior/non recognised USB stick, USB stick is USB 3 etc, USB stick capacity is too high etc

I stick with the thumb drives that have worked before for me, 8 / 16gb and USB2.

24 Feb 16 #323
OK, I ordered one of these a few days ago, it arrived and does look lovely, but I feel I might have made a mistake ordering it.

I bought it in the hope that I could take a few different sized, random 3.5" drives (from 500GB-2TB) hanging about, stick 'em in the unit and use as a NAS for home use and thought initially of using FreeNAS.

However I'm having a few doubts.

I don't need RAID of any sort, just drive access. Before buying I must have been reading about a prev version of FreeNAS as now it contains something called ZFS?

I'm worried that the drives will be wiped when I put them in the unit and instead of a total amount of storage, it'll do some sort of RAID on the drives and I'll end up with rather less disk space than I was expecting. I'm also worried that with ZFS, I can't remove an individual disk and slot that back into a PC as it'll have a new format on it.

Can anyone help before it joins the sandwich toaster at the back of the cupboard ?

Thanks in advance.

If you want to keep your data avoid using Freenas, I used it for over 2 years and its painful. I am tech savy as well but it really isn't the best for home solutions maybe a business even then I wouldn't feel safe storing important data on it. Install Windows server 2012 R2 on the 500GB disk you get with and add your other drives. This will keep your data safe and allow you to use it for multiple tasks. Even if you install Unraid it also uses another filesystem but I am finding extremely better than Freenas and easier to use.

So which 5TB HDD would you suggest?

I was thinking of getting two of one of the below, taking out the HDD and putting in place, as they are the cheapest I can find (I understand taking them apart **** the warranty).

I'll be running the synology software and Raid 0, as my current NAS is very Heath Robinson, with externals attached via USB.
Eventually putting in another 2 5TB's once the purse strings are loosened..

Thanks for the quick reply. There is no 500GB drive in the unit, mine came without disks. Not too sure about using Windows Server 2012, as the cost of the software is more than the hardware and the point of this machine is to become a cheap NAS, with Server 2012, I could have bought a ready to play 4 bay NAS (maybe I should have???)

Right so do you have data on the drives that you worry about losing? If not Unraid is a good solution but you will lose the largest drive to be used as a parity disk. Meaning if one of the disk fails you can rebuild the array with the data stored on the parity disk. It's a great though as you have a ton of things to use it for especially if you use Sickbeard, Sabnzbd, Plex, Couch potato and a whole list of other apps which can be installed as dockers. Ready to play NAS suck in my opinion, GUI's are slow, no options to expand other than more drives possibly. It all depends how simple you want it really, for me I like to have options. The synology NAS devices look good and supposedly to run well but this server costs a fraction of one of those with more options to expand.

I would buy a license from eBay if it was me and download the iso

I did that with Windows 10 pro.

License cost me £20

Tempting, but the ebay licences look really dodgy - "choose home or pro for £19.99"... Seems too good to be true unfortunately.

Is there any way to check with Microsoft that a key is genuine?

Thanks for the suggestion re: UnRAID. I'm not that bothered about RAID, my important stuff is backed-up to the cloud, purely want a way of getting the Drives onto the Network for access and not too keen on losing 2TB of storage to allow me to use the smaller disks.

As per the licence keys off ebay, has anyone bought them and what guarantee is there that these are real keys?

They did request it. I got an email saying they rejected the claim because no serial number was provided but I dot think recall it asking for one other than the invoice so I would say note down the serial number somewhere

Hackintosh (OSX on PC) is nothing short of a nightmare - I've been there and tried plenty of times and never succeed. A Microserver is going to make your life more difficult as it will be even further from the Mac Intel hardware stack.

I mostly have Macs too, and use this for a storage server with FreeNAS - Have a single dataset/folder shared for both Mac and PCs and all works fine together. Also have a folder setup for Time Machine backups which are fully automatic and work fantastic - and yes I have done full restores from it too
qwerta369
24 Feb 16 #346
Yikes! That's a pity. I'm familiar with hackintosh, in fact my main laptop is a now 4 year old HP Probook 4530s (that I bought thanks to HUKDs!) and has had every OS X incarnation on it since it's birth. Currently on El Capitan. But anyway, you reckon it's simply a no-go on this microserver? And, in any case, FreeNAS is a fine solution anyway?

24 Feb 16 #347
I have a serial for Windows Server 2012 R2 I got free from my place of study. My experience of servers is extremely limited but I am quite tech-minded. I'll be using the Proliant mainly for streaming music and video with a bit of file storage. Windows Server or Freenas?
maui
24 Feb 16 #348
Some machine safe easier than others! I guess it's no harm to try, but you'll struggle more with these Celeron based procs. With the time to invest would be better to learn FreeNAS, or if you must have OSX try installing VMware ESXi and running it in a VM? You could do same for FreeNAS to "kick the tyres" too

Hi All,

All the CPU upgrade information that I've seen for this server say that you can upgrade it using Sandy or Ivy Bridge Xeons but these have long since been discontinued. For some of the processors though there seem to be V3 "Haswell" versions available so does anyone know if these are are compatible ? e.g. The upgrade guides talk about using the E3-1230 V2 but none of them mention the E3-1230 V3 and I'm not sure if that's because the V3 is incompatible or just because the guides were written before V3 was available.

Thanks.

That link is for the N40L but as far as I am aware these cards will be compatible with Gen 8 also as the hardware is similar. I can see no reason they shouldn't as such because its a standard PCI-E slot.

Looking for some advice here.
I saw this thread and remembered my old Proliant which im sure i bought 4 years ago but never used.
Tried to get it set up as a media pc downstairs.
Basically so my parents can run Acestream and as a backup, Kodi for football when i am away.

Its got a N36L processor and 1GB and compared to this processor it is awful in the passmarks.
Running a high bitrate Acestream link it freezes and then carries on. On my laptop its fine and looking at Task Manager, the CPU is struggling to even run one Acestream link.

I always prefer Acestream to KODI as i find it far more reliable and the quality a lot better. Having the ability to buffer in Acestream is a godsend.
I added a HD5400 card so i can output to HDMI.

In Kodi i can run 720p streams fine so im trying to use that as a backup for now instead of Acestream but i struggle to find the PL games on there. Using Robocop i can watch BT Sports fine, but the PLP links dont work for me. So that should be European football covered but what about Premier League + Cup games.

Going to try the PLP links again at 15:00 games.
So any suggestions on saving my Proliant or better buying something else?

Hi sent as a PM but might as well ask here.

What setup are you running?
Extra RAM, Video Card, CPU?
Which HDD's have you gone with
Any finally which OS are you running, how is it?

I was going to load Synology DSM and run as a NAS, however after reading all the comments, I am thinking about running an OS, if it can handle it
Thanks

I would like to buy the Gen8 machine and run display on a 4K TV. Does it make sense to have such a setup?

If yes, I will need to find if any 4K display card is recommended? TIA!

I have just had conformation from HP my 4TBclaim has been accepted so £55 will be coming soon. I have finally got my server running properly with a 250GB SSD as a boot drive in the DVD space and 3 x 2TB as a raid. I had to buy a 4TB drive to back all my data and then configure the 3x2TB as a raid in the BIOS all data now back on the raid drives and i will look at adding the 4TB as a 4th drive on the raid knowing i will lose 2TB but can partition that as a reserve for backups. I am running WHServer 201.1

FDD to SATA Power / BERG to SATA Power Adaptor Converter, HP Gen 8 Microserver
