This is the cheapest I've seen for an Intel quadcore laptop with FHD screen, 950M graphics, SSD, second drive, Windows 10 etc.

About this time last year I bought an Asus N551JK laptop that I saw on HUKD for £565. It had a 1080p 15.6" screen, an Intel 4200H CPU and an Nvidia 850M GPU (virtually the same as the 950M on this HP). So far it's handled every game I've thrown at it with consummate ease. One of the things I've realised since moving up to 1080p gaming is that whilst detail is nice, it's really all about the game. Playing something like Portal is just as much fun in 768p as it is in 1080p. Voted hot as this is probably the best value gaming laptop I've seen in HUKD since I saw the Asus.

In case someone wanted to order but just missed it, it's now back at £569.99 - just ordered one, apparently around 41 left in stock

While the cpu is by no means the bottle neck - it feels like intel has crippled this chip by removing hyper-threading.

I know there's 1st 2nd 3rd gen quad core i7's on laptops, there's probably on all generations. I've never seen a quad core i3 ever though and as I said it's because of HT if you think it's a quad core. Anyway let's not debate this any further as neither of us are sure about all the Intel CPUs out there on laptops and it's cluttering up this thread with I know what I know this that and the other which I doubt anyone cares about in all honesty.

Was going to buy this last night but site wouldnt work properly, is this still good value at 600£.
I wanted it primarily for photoshop and video editing, and not at all really for games, is there something better for similar price that i could go for? or are laptops for gaming always going to have similar required specs for photoshop and vid editing?
Thanks in advance for any helpful replies

I've been looking at laptops for the last month and a half and even though it's gone up a bit there's nothing else with a decent CPU, GPU, FHD display and SSD for anywhere near this price. This actual laptop is on the HP site for £750 so I don't know why ebuyer are selling it at considerably less. http://www8.hp.com/uk/en/products/laptops/product-detail.html?oid=9044544

I am aware what hyperthreading is. (I can't tell about i3's to be honest) but i7-3610QM my lappy has is most certainly quad core. (it has 8 threads if that is bothering you).
A friend has a similar quad core i5 3rd gen.
4th gen quad cores go with HQ suffix I believe (i7-4712HQ as an example).
I am even fairly certain I have seen a quad i3 4th gen at some point...
I don't really know much about 2nd gen and before as I was "too young" then...
fishmaster

You talking physical or virtual cores? No i3's are quad core if you see four CPUs in device manager it's because of Hyperthreading.

HP Pavilion with green outlook not bad have seen them in a store not that impressed but does the job GTX 950 is good for games like League, COD, Battlefield 3, Tomb raider, Dota 2 at high settings. i5 is more then enough for an average users (browsing, skype, beginner gaming, Microsoft office) for that money it sounds ok but will do look for other options in the market then choose to buy.

9 Feb 16#45
Sure they are, I am certain for 3rd (I have one in my laptop) and 4th gen, (haven't seen a 5th gen 4 core ones).
As far as I understood the i cpus started as 4 cores and then the M and U editions with only 2 were introduced leading to a lot of criticism (for no good reason mostly imo).
This is a decent machine at a good price.
For gaming it is all a question of expectations, if 768p, 30fps on low detail is good enough for you it will run any game (contrary to what people claim). It will even do way better than that for a vast majority of games.
Of course if you think of "running" a game as 1080p 60fps and high detail than, sure, it won't run newer games...

When I was a youngster, we didn't really have computers. We had slide rules which aren't that great for any sort of gaming. I do sort of remember Pong being in pubs at uni but it cost money to play as I was truly skint back then so I watched more than played. The first game I really played was the first Duke Nukem in 1991. It was so brilliant back then...sigh...

Steam Home Streaming. Yes, it's basically a remote desktop, but specifically for video games. There are other ways of doing it but Steam can do it for you and it works very well. All you need to do is install and login to Steam on both computers and then one computer can stream a game to the other one over your local network - so in my case I've got a pretty decent desktop in my study and I can use it to play games on my laptop in the living room when I'm watching TV - so the desktop is running the game but you're viewing/controlling it on the laptop. If it's a non-Steam game you can still use Steam Home Streaming with it if you add a shortcut to the game in your Steam library.

9 Feb 16#33
I'm sorry to go off topic, what do you mean when you stream from your desktop? Do you mean something like teamviewer? I'm very interested in being able to get a bit more mobility but i have a beast desktop, but doesnt something like teamviewer have any latency involved?

Did I say good? No, I said fine. But if you want to get into it some more we're going to have to define what we mean by 'good' and also what we mean by 'games'. Because PC gaming these days runs the gamut from indie games that could be run on a phone to really demanding games that even SLI Titans struggle with. I have a desktop as well and that has a GTX 980 - is that good for games? I think it is, but I don't play the kind of games on my laptop that I play on my desktop, and everything that's run on my laptop runs at high or highest settings. Sometimes I do want to play something a bit more demanding on my laptop whilst watching TV or something and that's when I use streaming - and even if I had a 950M I'd still be have to stream the more demanding games. If you're that bothered about playing everything at full settings then you're going to have a decent desktop build, not a laptop at all.

Good laptop, but not a gaming one with 950M. Heat added.
Got a 3 year old HP laptop with a 630M and it's still absolutely fine for most games - although I am starting to use home streaming from my desktop more and more. If I upgraded it would be mostly to get a slightly better nVidia GPU to be able to use ShadowPlay.
nomnomnomnom
9 Feb 16#21
But that's a ridiculous price for that spec. Vastly overpriced. They're adding in a rucksack to make it look like a better package, along with some marketing.
Same CPU, Better 960M GPU, Better HDD (it also has 8GB flash onboard) , Same RAM, much easier to get parts for if you drop it in 3 years time, a better collect & return warranty (or 2 years next business day for £64 right now).
You'd be really hard pressed to find a reason to buy the MSI at £952. More so given you can easily find the Dell for ~£50 cheaper not direct, or by asking / haggling with them on live chat.

Fantastic laptop, bought this from HP direct before Christmas.
950M has been handling GTA V on mid-to-high graphics at around 30fps, up to 50fps on low-medium. Not bad considering!

Is there a major difference between this i5 and an i7?
It's mainly cache size and hyper-threading capabilities. As with most tech I would say, if you can afford it then get the higher spec but if you can't then you'll probably won't miss the better performance most of the time imo.

The performance of i5-6300QM roughly same as 2nd Gen Intel Core i7-2670QM @ 2.20GHz.
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-6300HQ+%40+2.30GHz
Now a 2670QM laptop goes for about £250 - obviously the new chip is more power efficient - it's just 550+ quid is alot!

950M is mid range 128 bit graphic card + full hd screen on HP and you won't be able to play most of the modern games in high settings i'm afraid...
