"Talking of wireless, Chromecast is supported along with cast screen. The Honor 6 has an infra red blaster that is not documented nor does it come with any software installed for it. Yet a quick search on XDA Developers revealed a bespoke app made by Huawei that works a treat. I had tried a few other Infra Red remote apps but none of them worked apart from Huawei’s own app."

I know, I've got one.And a Xiaomi Redmi Note 2.

But a lot of folk won't know or trust the brand or want to risk importing from China. Although I got mine in 8 days from order at £125 delivered and dodged all VAT and import charges. This is just £40 more and is fulfilled by Amazon.

The Ulefone is also quite a bit bigger in screen size (5.5" is the sweet spot for me, not for everyone though) and a lot thicker and weightier due to the 6Amp battery. The audio output from the 3.5mm jack is also a bit quiet even with 15Ohm impedance earbuds.

Horses for courses m8.

I have the uleFone and the build quality and ROM exceeds anything I've had from HTC and Samsung in the past, and for a Chinese maker that's saying something.

To be fair uleFone is well regarded/established in the East, it's just in the West people don't trust the brand if it's not Apple/Samsung/LG/HTC/Sony etc. :stuck_out_tongue:

PS EngineerMode lets you tweak mic levels, I had to boost normal as people said I sounded quiet.

It's also totally vanilla android which some folk just love.

I fully agree with you fella. I think it's an extraordinary bit of kit for £125 and superbly built on a metal chassis. Over the coming year UK folk will get accustomed to the idea that Chinese phones are the same as Apple or Samsung or HTC, just without the expensive ad campaigns and silly margins that make the equivalent phone £300-£600.

I got away with no VAT and no import duties by asking them to mark it as worth £79. This MAY attract some charges if it gets inspected but IME, you really get done for charges if you go silly by asking it to be marked as a gift with a stupid low value. £79 for a Chinese phone is very feasible and they won't bother checking the actual model and cost.

Hope you enjoy the Ulefone Power! Glad to be of help!

Yes, it should work fine on all UK networks. It has the 800Mhz 4G band that many Chinese phones are missing. 2G: GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz
3G: WCDMA 900/2100MHz
4G: FDD-LTE 800/900/1800/2100/2600MHz

I'm after a 5 inch phone or less as my current 5.5" Oneplus is just too big. I just don't know which phone would be the best. I'm not fussed about it being Chinese, but I'd like to be able to put cyanogen mod on it.
RiverDragon8
19 Feb 16 #14
Gearbest and other chinese sellers state the value to be $20 or less so there is no import tax. They do this because your liable to pay tax on anything over £15. $20 at the moment = £14.01.

19 Feb 16 #21
I think well regarded/established is a bit of a stretch. To the best of my knowledge they are a small player in China and with a history of lying about the specs and altering the software to hide the changes but with a very good reputation for build quality.

Lots of people on the forums I frequent have been stung and Ulefone themselves are hilarious if you ever spend any time on Gizchina comments. They come on with false disqus accounts bigging up the company and slagging off others. Very funny at first but just a little bit depressing now.

However, I'm waiting to see how the Power and Paris do over time as both look promising initially.

Plus Honor 6 probably has a decidedly better camera than the Power which might be important to some.

19 Feb 16 #22
I bought the Honor 6 as a backup phone when my LG G2 was away for a warranty repair - ended up keeping the Honor 6 as I found it much better to use than the G2.

I gave the Honor 6 to my wife as I wanted to try a 5.5" Chinese phone - I've had the Elephone P7000 since June last year and still like it a lot.
Big advantage of the Honor 6 is the reasonable price for a 5" screen, plus the 2 day battery life.
RiverDragon8
19 Feb 16 #23
You didn't need to ask them to mark it down to any value they would of done it anyway to the value of $20 or below. Why risk getting stung and paying extra? Seems silly to me.
barbiegirl
19 Feb 16 2 #24
No, I disagree. The Ulefone Power uses a f1.8 Sony 13MP IMX214. This is the best 13MP that Sony make and the f stop is better than most phones giving much better results in lower light.

The power claims are backed up with an independent test which you can find on YouTube - well close - it came in at 5950mAh instead of the claimed 6050. My teenager has this phone and even he can't kill the battery in a day. Usually has 30-50% left and if you've seen how teenagers use mobiles, you'll realise that's truly impressive.

Because customs aren't stupid. IF they open a package to inspect the contents and test the veracity of the value claim, they are far more likely to do that with a weighty package marked as being worth only $20. Maybe it's worked for you, sometimes it's luck of the draw. I decided I was happy to pay a bit of VAT and import duty if I had to, and I've always done it this way and never paid anything. YMMV. Cheers
RiverDragon8
19 Feb 16 #26
Fair enough mate. To the other hukd members on here i would advise them not to do what you have done because it's an unnecessary risk and you will pay nothing extra on the items you buy from China.
Rarnik
19 Feb 16 #27
Well, feel free to disagree but the Gizchina review says that inspite of the sensor they've put in the pics aren't great and that he hopes it is just a problem of software optimisation. Apparently Ulefone are working on it.

http://www.gizchina.com/2016/02/01/ulefone-power-review/

I don't doubt the battery. They've lied before and people are watching, plus I do get the impression they are trying to do better.
barbiegirl
19 Feb 16 #28
I think it's reasonable to say that when you import something from overseas, you take a risk. You may get it through without charges, you may not. The law is there to allow Customs to charge you and they clearly do, so it's a bit of a lottery really. How many items have you managed to import charge free out of interest?

Everything i have ever bought from China (over 20+ items) i have never paid anything extra because on the outside postage label the value stated has been $5,$10, $20 max or 'Gift' with no invoice inside (for obvious reasons).

Roger_Irrelevant
19 Feb 16 #32
It's got the exact same primary camera, the Sony IMX-214, this is one of the main reasons I got it. Less megapixels but certainly no worse (arguably better most shots, see comparisons on gsmarena) than the IMX-230 or 300 found in the Xperia 5.

The gizchina is just one blokes opinion with no comparison to back it up, I've looked closely at the pics mine produces and they're tack sharp, ever so slight softening towards the edges/corners but all lenses except the most expensive DSLR primes will exhibit this.

You can also tweak loads of settings in the MTK EngineerMode (including Camera) but this is very, very undocumented.

http://i67.tinypic.com/2jfgeag.png

E.g. the Power can produce RAW files with no processing applied.

this may sound a stupid question but this ore the honor 7?. I'm after a Chinese phone as have a HTC one m7 now that's playing up and want something better but not UK prices. would this be faster and better and what about a honor, quite like the sound of them too.

19 Feb 16 #34
Mate it's all rather subjective and down to your choice. The Ulefone is a very very impressive piece of kit and I have first hand experience of it. The Honor 6 I've never held or used, I just saw its price had dropped a lot.

If you're nervous about importing, get the Honor 6. If you tear through battery, get the Ulefone Power. If you feel you need or want fingerprint security, get the Ulefone. If you're on a super tight budget get the Ulefone.

I can't recommend any Huawei phones except Nexus 6P i'm afraid. I have the Honor 7 and EMUI is horrible. No it's not just a launcher, the lock screen changes and the notification panel is not to my taste. The framework (the settings page/layout is actually quite nice and I have got to appreciate the power management firewall. But the heavy skin especially on 16gb model leaves hardly any space for apps etc and no an SD card is not the solution. Coupled with what i said before can't recommend.

Hit and miss with who's quickest sending out newly released phones. I had a p7000 ordered at both gearbest and aliexpress and aliexpress were quick to despatch and I gave up on gearbest and got a refund. But I think gearbest were quick with the p8000.

I was planning the p9000, but they've only fitted the 13mp camera rather than the 21mp that they originally planned (as on the M3). But I'll see if I can pick up a discount voucher from the 2nd round of the crowdfunding.

For me this deal is very solid because 5in is my preferred size. 5.5 is already big - and usually heavy - in the pocket. Currently I'm on a Sony Z3C so I don't need to upgrade, but it costed more than double this price free-unlocked.

Their website is hilarious, tries to come across as professional but absolutely is nowhere near it. Look at this bit of genius >

http://ulefone.com/products/parisgolden/features.html

Extreme balance at the golden point - nonsense, doesn't mean anything, the phone is golden the rest of the sentence is useless.

Bes audio - lol do you get that bloke with the maracas from the Happy Mondays.

2.5D Arc screen - I bet if Noah was here he'd be laughing as well. Come on God resurrect the old sucker I want a laugh.

Enough is perfect - Oh shaddup I've had enough of you, cheers that's well perfect now.

Performance above benchmarks - ahh this must be what they mean by floating performance.

Controlled to be natural - no fake tan here

http://ulefone.com/products/power/features.html

The 6050mAh power source allows you to do whatever your heart tells you and be free your self - Now I know what went wrong on Valentine's Day.

Pump Express PLus Quick Charger - Sounds like something they use to make supermarket chicken look tastier than it really is.

Smart Key for Artist - This makes you clever when you're drunk, very useful.

Final Solution to Remote Control - Ah looks like they have a Hitler complex. I knew all the good things couldn't last

Android 5.1 going on 6.0 - I think this means you get a free bra with your phone.

I manually upgraded Android using the ROM available on Huawei's site.
Battery is good, screen is lovely and imo perfect size.
Comes with a screen protector and protector to stick on the back too. The screen does get micro scratches pretry easily I've found so I would advise to definetly use the protector

'Chinese phones are the same as Apple'. Will stop you right there as I'm yet to see anyone other than Apple release a phone running iOS. Also, it may look nice on the outside, that I don't disagree with but even HTC's, once you crack them open the difference in build quality is evident. Nevertheless I know my iPhone is overpriced and this is a good phone for the price!

GearBest took 8 days order to delivery for me on the Ulefone Power. Works fine with 3, you can use an SD card but it doesn't come with one. It does have a screen protector and clear silicon case in the box along with hi speed charger and cable.

You may wish to boost the headphone volume. Use MTK engineering app to increase value.

Thanks for quick detailed reply, just few more questions, I just bought Honor 5x really impressed with the looks but its lag too much although I have installed nova launcher which really make a difference but still I am not satisfied, just recently sold my s5 so at least looking for similar speed smart phone, how would you compare ulefone power to s5 or redmi 3, thanks
barbiegirl
25 Feb 16 2 #75
If you are talking about lag, there is none. Not a hint of it. I also have Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 Prime which is also a good phone. Can't comment on Redmi 3. Don't like Samsung phones - TouchWizz is poor IMO. There's 3GB of RAM in the Ulefone which combined with the 4/4 processor set up and a vanilla android gives you all the power you need.

so - from personal experience, would you say xiaomi note 2 prime or ulefone power is better? in every way including camera, wifi connections, etc
Roger_Irrelevant to HotDealAlert
26 Feb 16 #78
As barbiegirl said there is no lag anywhere. Check out the YouTube videos of actual use. If something runs slow it's because it's badly coded. I installed Firefox thinking I could browse without annoying ads but it was slow and clunky sadly. :disappointed: The stock browser is fast but you have you put up with ads, there may be an alternative out there though.
barbiegirl to HotDealAlert
26 Feb 16 #79
Ulefone is a better phone IMO
Roger_Irrelevant
26 Feb 16 #77
Takes about 10-14 days or so, I'd go for gearbest.com, ask for tracking, you can see a photo of your actual envelope before it leaves then track it's progress (Belgium airmail?) As far as I know it supports all the bands in the UK, but check on http://www.devicespecifications.com/en/model/f52e390e for full specs.

Another thing, the wireless is fantastic; Right now I'm downloading all UK O.S. maps for Back Country Navigator as I type this, probably 20+ GB, it's been going for about 5 hours and not missed a beat.

Comes with a tray at the side where you put either (2xmicroSIM) or (1 microSIM + 1 microSD). I just cut my old mini SIM down using a template I printed off.

Honestly an amazing phone, £120 for basically something as good as a £3/4/500 mainstream one.
