Just a heads up that Halifax are increasing their current account signup bonus to £125 from Tuesday. The bonus is paid within three workings days of a successful transfer using the bank switching service.

For their basic current account - no major conditions e.g. no direct debits needed and no minimum paying in amount per month.

If you want to earn an additional £5 per month (on top of the £125 one off bonus) opt for the Reward Current Account. The conditions to get the additional £5 per month is paying in £750 a month into the account + 2 Direct Debits + staying in credit for that month.

Ta OP.

Easiest switch incentive to complete IMO. Easy and quick online application, a simple online switch form and payment typically a day or 2 after the completion date.

Space out current account applications and don't apply for overdrafts where possible, this should minimise the impact (if any) on your credit score.

There is no credit interest on their current accounts, although I'm sure they offer unbeatable debit interest rates.

They do offer 4% on their HTB ISA.

5 Feb 16 #48
it does affect your credit rating as they keep track how old your average current accounts are
It might not affect it too much but it will affect it negatively to an extent

I switched to Halifax in Sept15 when it was still 125 on offer. So far experience is very good. Switching happened on time and they paid 125 on first day. Another good thing they don't give you the offline card-reader like Hsbc/NatWest. Also most of their branches have cash counting machines which makes your depositing task easier.I would certainly recommend them.

Bad idea to switch an account you've had for 12 years. Being with a bank for a while is looked on favourably by creidtors if you've been maintaining that account well. Close the account and it will record anything bad that happened on that account in the last six years, keep it open and only three years show.

As Martin Lewis says you shop around for the best insurance and the best credit card and you should do the same with your bank account. Staying with the same bank is stupid if another has a better account for you.

I switched to Santander 123 for a while then back to Halifax just before Christmas when it was also £125 incentive. It's an ok account as you get £5 per month pretty easily (think its 2x direct debits and put in something like £500 or £600 a month from memory). I plan to switch again in 12 months or so as not advisible to switch too often. It's not an interest on the balance so if you wanted to comply with the terms and then move the money elsewhere you could.

You've nothing to lose slipd, if your credit rating is good and your payments are regular and not overdrawn, you're in a good position to switch...and I don't just mean this one, there's lots of banks out there desperate for your money and willing to pay you for it

5 Feb 16 2 #34
Yes but you can only put £300 in a month and over the year that doesn't amount to much at all, by switching banks you can earn well over and above this amount in a blink of an eye.

Yes their mortgages are good rates, but if you're not after a mortgage or up for changing your mortgage to them, you're not gaining anything by staying with them, all I'm saying is it's good to look around.

Set up your DDs on the *OLD* account (i.e. the one you are switching from). Initiate your switch from the old account, to the new account.

Your DD's will then transfer to your new account as part of the switch process (fulfilling the criteria!)

PS: Make sure once you initiate the DD creation that you wait 5ish days for it to set up. Check your online banking (on old account of course) where they should appear - once they're there, you're good to go!

That's great, free money!!! And yes, I do want to make the most of my money at uni.
Could I switch to a Reward Current Account later on, deposit £750 and then move the 750 into my other account, and still get the reward, or does the £750 need to be spent on their system?

If I switch to these accounts now, do enough of these banks to make some money, and then I move from a current account to a Santander student account, is that OK, or will they reject me because I have opened many different bank accounts.

Alternatively, is it better to wait until I get to uni, get a student account with a larger overdraft, THEN create a donor with another bank, and then use the switch incentives?

Also which account should be my donor account, I have a main one at Barclays, so should I setup a donor on a Natwest account? Any idea which bank doesn't have good incentives so that I should setup a donor there?

Noob question here but I was just reading and it says the following : "To qualify for the £100, use the Current Account Switch Service to transfer and close your old account held elsewhere. Excludes anyone who's had a cash back for switching to Halifax since January 2012. You’re still eligible to use the switch service if you don’t qualify for the switching offer".

Is the "Current Account Switch Service " a service provided by Halifax or is it a external company/website you have to do the transfer through?

Thanks in advance.

CASS is a Coalition government introduced scheme to help people switch banks more easily and quickly. You will only have to deal with your NEW bank (ie who are you switching to). Phone your new bank and ask to switch: give them your old sort code, account number, debit card number and expiry date. They will do everything else.

It is backed by a switch guarantee. Perfectly safe and legitimate. Very easy!

It may be worth while opening a few bank accounts ready to switch in the future.
I'm looking at Santander through imutual.
£31 cashback tto and they are suposed to guarantee your cashback.

Strange it's not on TCB or Quidco?

Any views on this?

My credit of £125 was showing as of yesterday, so within 4 days the account was set up, bank card came today, online banking was activated yesterday and a credit of £125! Very smooth apart from the hiccup.

Thanks Chanchi!

Hi,

Can any1 tell me how long after you've opened your account and received the £125 bonus, can you then leave and switch to say Clydesdale bank to take advantage of their switching bonus offer?

Don't want to lose my £125 from Halifax if I switch too soon!

Thanks

Stuart.

i want to know what a donor account is too. i have 2 accounts with lloyds one i never use and have 1p in (im presuming this is a donor account), so i have switched this account, and received my £125 and got card today and pin code.

Just wondering how this works with regard to salary payment. I've missed the cut off date for February with regards to giving my employer new bank details. If the whole process takes 7 days and your banck account is closed what happens to the salary payment at the end of the month?

Thanks
karlie88 to Gambler
19 Feb 16 2 #156
It will automatically get transferred over to your new account for 36 months.
thewolf8u
20 Feb 16 #157
Please note when you open the account in your name you'll need to upgrade it to a joint account (which is all I have) before you can compete the switch. To upgrade to a joint account I need to visit my local branch for a 30 minute appointment (wouldn't work online). Not very convenient plus the only appointment I could get is 15 days away. So it's more become a lot of faffing about for £125.
karlie88 to thewolf8u
20 Feb 16 #158
Why not switch 2 sole accounts instead? A branch visit is less likely, it's all done online in 30 minutes and you'll get £125 each.
homsey851
20 Feb 16 #159
Do you need to have held the account that you are switching to Halifax for a minimum amount of time or can you just open an new account elsewhere and switch straightaway?
marineville
20 Feb 16 #160
that really is nonsense... noone favours you for loyalty, beyond realising that they don't have to sweeten the pot and yet you'll still stay... the same logic as all old pensioners use for still being with 'the gas board' and abused partners use for staying... a fraction of time spent sorting out your bank COULD net you up to a grand by switching what i'd call 'ghost' accounts. if you want more info, happy to talk you through it... or not. but don't believe you get preferential service to sticking with anyone...

20 Feb 16 #162
Hi guys. I was just looking at the application form and filling it in but there is no page on the application asking for the details of my current bank? So how do they do the switch if they don't have the details of my current bank. Or do they ask but its after the initial questions they ask in the application online?
morgie to mighty mugger
20 Feb 16 2 #163
It's a two step process. You apply for an account first, then they ask if you want to switch your existing bank account over.

im sure i read somewhere if you switch after 6 months (but before 12 months), you receive another £100 from halifax- can anyone else confirm this- or how long you have to wait without switching, so not to lose the £125

Anyone knows this? I thought once you've got the money you could run?

Halifax might be playing the card, assuming people who takes advantage of £125, would also be after the monthly £5 reward (upto £60 after 12 month)?

have opened a new account with halifax, got my email confirmation today, went online to set up the switch from norwich and peterborough and i'm told it can't be done with this bank online, it seems nothing can ever be done with N&P i have no credit, so a poor rating and went to set up vanquis card to create a credit rating and only got refused because N&P don't accept DD's with them, can't wait to be rid of this bank =(

I don't think they'll try to get it back? Does it say anywhere how long you've got to keep the account?

e.g. do you have to transfer in 750 quid just to be safe?

It could only happen to me...smh..Started the application almost got to Confirm when they offered me overdraft, somehow didn't take a decision and I was timed out telling me I should restart. When I restart the application I get an error telling me I already applied. What to do now?

Can anyone confirm if after having paid in £750 and two direct debit payments coming out, if you then withdraw any remaining cash to take your account to a £0 balance, will you get the £5 'bonus' for the month? I'm wondering about their definition of a positive balance, if it's more about not having gone into an overdraft.
