Should be good - I bought the Doogee X5 3G for £32 for my daughter when her own phone was being repaired, and we were incredibly impressed with the build quality and useability -so much that she opted to keep it.

Not the greatest in terms of specs eg 720p screen but a great price. I would say that with a very large battery and low resolution screen this could be a great work phone though! Last for days and even more if gets marshmallow.

No point of cheering the big spec if it scores so low in Antututu.

Its not how big it is but what you do with it that counts.

25 Jan 16 1 #9
To be fair this isn't a phone aimed at power users! Anything around 20,000 on Antutu should be more than useable for everyday tasks. And to get 2GB RAM/16GB ROM, a 5.5" screen (granted 720p as opposed to 1080P), a 3000mAh battery and 5.1 Lollipop for less than £70 is pretty impressive in my book.

Brilliant price for a great spec phone for the money and even better if you can get this or the

It seems hardly fair to compare this to the iPhone. The iPhone in vastly superior to this, as well as much more expensive. It's apples and oranges.

Also I very much doubt this is eating into Apple's sales. Apple targets the higher end, premium market segment with stunning design, built quality devices aimed at wealthy consumers. And for good reason. They're raking in the cash in the premium segment of the market. I have a PhD in Business Economics.

I have a Doogee Y100 X that I picked up in the 11.11 sale for about £30. Didn't have a use for it until I dropped my Honor 7 and smashed the screen, sadly it's now my daily driver until the H7 screen is fixed.

I've had a few budget Chinese phones before and Doogee is definitely worth a shot, the GPS is much better than the Elephone I've had, for example.

The camera is appalling mind...

I guess none of this is relevant to this X6 Pro but the brand is decent in my book

I had a Doogee (turbo f1) a while ago - decent phone for the price but after a couple of months I started getting message notifications with 'cutesy' pictures and in Chinese. I'd removed all the pre-installed bloatware that I could and never worked out what app had been left behind to be causing them. Didn't like the idea of some software running that I didn't know about so changed the phone for a more mainstream brand.

Take from that what you will...

All Chinese vendors use the phrase 'TF card' to avoid licensing requirements around the use of 'SD'. Very clever I say.

You'll probably find that wealthy customers often don't pay for their devices - I'd suspect a very large slice of the market is driven by wannabees who think owning an Apple product will raise their perceived social status.

Apple targets the market section of people who are impressed by slick marketing and pay over the odds for admittedly well built products that tie them into the Apple eco-system. I've nothing against Apple products at all but wouldn't consider buying into the idea. Well other than being able to buy more usable products for a fraction of the price and being able to stick two fingers up to market driven consumerism

25 Jan 16 #34
Have you used an iPhone? They're amazing. I have an iPhone 5S. I've never met anyone in real life who buys an iPhone "to raise their perceived social status". People buy iPhone because quite simply nothing comes close to its minimalistic yet beautiful design, a masterpiece of engineering. There are only "poor man's" imitators. The white iPhone 5S that I have is a true marvel to behold. Also I'm not sure what you mean by "tied in to ecosystem". I've never felt tied in or locked in at all. Maybe if you bought a lot of stuff on iTunes or whatever. I hardly use it for music anyway though and watch most things on Netflix.

Yes even wealthy consumers pay for their devices - they may be given one by work but usually have another for personal use
gtd65
25 Jan 16 #36
Yes, I've used a number of Apple products (computers/tablets/phones) and can only say that I don't consider them to be worth the premium prices they are pitched at, or that they are any better than non-Apple products.

Suggesting anything else is a "poor mans imitator" is hilarious! Buy hey, you must be in the target market for the superiority kick?

From my point of view, they offer far less value for money and are far more restricted than the competition. I'm not be-dazzled by the designs personally so that doesn't offer any value at all for me.

I was given an iPad with a broken screen by a friend that didn't want to repair it, I replaced the digitizer and it all works as it should but it's nowhere near as user friendly as any of the Android devices for putting your own content onto it - I'll say one thing, it's certainly much better to use than a Windows tablet - which is awful in my opnion.

Netflix is also another well marketed product that really has very little content, once you get past the first month of use.

My company gave me a Samsung Galaxy A3 - it's very well built and designed but it's an absolute dog of a phone to use...in my opinion.
misa426
25 Jan 16 #37
Netflix isn't the only one I use, I also use other video streaming apps and sites but I say "Netflix" for brevity. Netflix has a fair bit of good content when you know how to use a VPN to get the programmes you can't normally get in the UK

Apple devices are just the best built out there and I mean inside and out, not just exterior design - the minimalist interface is beautiful. The high price is justified by both the beautiful software and hardware. Jony Ive is a genius.
An Android device...not so much. You only need to turn on an Android device to see why, at the most primary level, Android is not and never will be on the level of iOS in design - the home screen. The. Icons. Are. Not. Uniform. I'll say that again - the icons aren't uniform. So right from the get go you're given this cludge-pudge mess of inconsistent interface design. iOS cracked this without a sweat from day one. Oh but of course not to worry, Android lets you customise! Wow! So now you get to muck about with custom launchers - and then get a custom icon pack for your apps - and even then not all of your apps will be included. So to avoid this you simply hide that ugly duckling of an app you couldn't find a custom, uniform icon for, relegate it to the shameful wasteland where all unwanted apps lurk - the app drawer. Before long you've acquired a neat collection of great apps, only problem is their icons won't match the others. So now you decide to banish them all into a folder and keep your home screen, uh, empty. Oh, except widgets. Since you find no widgets that are of any real use to you, being honest, you decide to simply fill your entire home screen with, wait for it ... a clock!... And not to worry, you have those wonderful live wallpapers to distract you from how crap your Android device looks. For the rest of us though, there are better things to do in life than have to worry about customising the interface to look even half decent - and that it's best left to the designer from factory. Hence, Apple, and hence, iPhone.
Note, I've used several Android and iOS devices over past few years and have a Masters in Human Interface and Technology design.
Note 2: To settle this, show me one screenshot, just one screenshot, of an Android home screen that's filled up with stock icons (not empty/widgets) and actually looks nice. Then I'll be a true believer in the Droid God.

Well that's the price you pay to have unlimited options to great phones instead of one mediocre overpriced phone, who's services and OS blatantly tie you in future generations. I'm no developer but I guess its very easy to optimize a os for 1 measly phone per year than it is for a os well that's compatible for anything
amour3k
26 Jan 16 #41
Your halfway there with your assumptions I guess?.

But the all singing all powerful God of 'profits' will NEVER allow for for any such 'One Phone fits ALLLLLL' scenario?, EVER! (irrespective of whether such a 'Phone' could ever be viably possible?), so .....

Hence in-part (Globally), we're in the 'situation' we're at now I suppose?.
misa426
26 Jan 16 #42
Indeed, optimising for only a few phones is easier than optimising for hundreds. Another reason why iOS is superior.

I've never quite understood the "unlimited options" argument though. You're only going to buy one device. I also have the option to buy any of the "unlimited" Android devices, but I'd rather not. Because not one of them comes close to the incredible iPhone design, inside and out. Speaking of options, you've got a whole load of oversized cheap Android phones. But you know why I love the iPhone 5S? Being able to use it one handed. Over on the Android side, there is nothing that comes close to the iPhone 5S at that size display. The mini versions of flagships are always just as ugly as their big siblings but with worse specs.

Re the iphone comments . I recently was talking to a girl who worked in place a that repaired
mobile phones ; usually returned under guarantee/ contract/ insurance as not working properly.

All the phones when they arrived were put in a large box for each manufacturer as waiting to be repaired. Except for iphones , they had a separate box for just iphone5,s as there were so many duff ones !

She recommended the Samsung galaxy as the most reliable of phones .
However the Chinese phones nearly all offer more bang for the buck .

I've used Netflix regularly in the USA as well, so can't say using a VPN would help improve the content level. For those "in the know" (probably generally defined as those not using Apple products) you can get allsorts of content without needing to use a VPN.

I agree that Apple products are well made but not to the extent that commands the price premium that the Apple fans pay. I've not got a clue who Jony Ive is but if that's your opinion, that's cool with me.

I'm not sure we are on the same wavelength here, all of my icons on the home page of my Android devices simply have my most used apps. I don't sit and look at the home page in wonderment - I just use it as a start point for tasks and where I launch them if I'm being honest. Are you suggesting that the Android icons are all irregularly shaped? It's possibly a detail that mere mortals have not quite grasped? Could it be that I'm just using my phone/tablet rather than being in love with it? Perhaps I'm just too practically minded to see the wood for the trees?

Well as well all know now, with your Masters in Human Interface and Technology design, that's why you know better than the rest of us. I'm missing out in life with a miserly BSc in Engineering and not understanding a thing!

If you truly were educated - as opposed to having some collections of pieces of paper to show your worth, you'd surely understand that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and completely subjective? Showing you an Android home screen would not prove anything at all, would it?

misa426
26 Jan 16 #54
But a phone isn't just a phone nowadays is it? For many people, myself included, it's one's primary computer. I can do 90% of the things I want to do on my smart device, the other 10% on a laptop. So when the device has that much use and is something you're going to use every day, it's well worth spending more for something quality (Apple).

What do I use mine for? Almost all Web browsing tasks, photography, notes, radio, phone (rarely), text, instant messaging apps, entertainment - games, and there are some really fantastic games. Gameloft make some excellent console quality 3D FPSses which my iPhone 5S handles like a dream. And the funny thing is, all the apps that I use the most I've not paid a penny for. So this "locked in" business just doesn't apply and I'd say for most users it won't apply. It's just a typical ignorant argument a Droid defender has to turn to. I actually paid about £180 for the iPhone 5S, used but in mint condition. Well worth every penny.

Hi all, Just wondering if anyone can help as I am deciding whether to go with this phone or not.

Is it the successor to the X5? I can see it has a larger screen 5.5 vs 5 inch but the rest of the specs look the same?

Also has anyone considered the non pro version?

Lastly will this phone work on 02 or Vodafone as I can see that these networks support 900MHZ/2100MHZ yet this phone only supports 2100 MHZ on 3g?

gtd65
26 Jan 16 #57
You do all of those tasks on a 4" screen? FPS gaming on a screen that size must be a miserable experience surely?

I can't imagine you do much that is productive on your phone, if you do, then think how productive you could be on something more suitable!

I use my android devices mainly for communication and media consumption purposes, they have not disappointed at all in that regard. I've not had a 4" screen for many years now and consider 4.5" to be the bare minimum size acceptable these days for something like a smartphone.

On your locked in device, can you save your local files to a micro sdhc card?

From my understanding "most user" don't use Apple products by quite a large margine these days. I think last time I looked, Android had about 60% of the market? In the computer market, it's obviously much more significant.

I'm not anti-Apple products by any stretch of the imagination but I do believe that savvy tech users get much better value and "bang for the buck" with Android devices. If that's conforming to your "Droid defender" comment then fair enough
misa426
26 Jan 16 #59
Hence my still having a laptop for productive tasks. But yes, I love the small screen and no I don't find it miserable at all. FPS gaming is fantastic. Back around the 2000s we would pride ourselves on the miniaturization of mobile devices, now it seems the bigger the phone in the deal the "more phone for your money"! Madness. Can I save things to a micro SD card? No, and I wouldn't bother. Everything I need is online. Apple is a forward thinking company and realises this. Yes Android has most of the market share, but Apple was wise and focused on the premium market which is where all the profits lie. Which is why Apple still makes the most profit of any manufacturer. I have a PhD in Business Economics, and Apple are in the position most companies only wish they were in.

Would it handle Blitz Brigade and Modern Combat 5 at buttery smooth 60FPS without lowering graphics settings? No. Would I be able to use it comfortably with one hand? No. Would the design be anywhere near as nice? No. Would I have the peace of mind of having a physical store presence like the Apple Store not far from me in case I get problems? No. Would it have a nice sharp screen? No. It would do all the things I need to do, yes, it would just do them poorly.

Many are the days I have spent with tears of desperation at the icons not matching in my Android phones and tablets. Why, God, why? I cry? How could you make a world so cruel?

Oh wait, I never noticed. But every time I pick up an Apple device, I DO notice the lack of a standard back button.

Anyway, to each his own.
