TIPS:
If you are planning on using these, as in multiple CCA's connected to different sets of speakers
around your property/properties, you *will* need a decent Wifi setup.. a lot of the reported reviews
over the last few months on this device have been made negative just from that issue alone.. so
if your wifi signal is naff/slow/old a/b/g and even some n [150mbps] speed, you might want to spend
£20 on a dual band or 5GHz wifi setup or if you have a newish router, a virtual wifi node..just for your
Audio pleasure..

The CCA runs 24bit, full metal jacket audio over 5GHz perfectly and as an early adopter of it, can
confirm that have never had one single audio buff or drop due to wifi speed/naffness.. other than
the normal, you are stuck out in the sticks windy power cuts!

Audio for Chromecast is a fantastic way to *re-purpose* any old or even new speakers that you
thought were just going to gather dust or be chucked in the tip! Match it up with a 2K amp and it
just makes you want to get up and Boogie!

I dont know about Samsung - but on my Sony Z3 I actually use the Cast Screen option to 'Cast my screen' to the ChromeCase Audio. Yes, I know this is an audio only device - but it connects just fine.
Then I just use PowerAmp (or any other MP3 player) to play the music on my phone and I can hear it on the Hifi (into which the CA is plugged in via a 3.5mm to Phono converter cable - something like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002IRRISK/ref=pe_385721_37986871_TE_item).

Nope it doesn't, unless you are using Apple Music in Android with mirroring option.

Alternatively you can use Plex, if you do have Plex server set up at home, which Plex server & app are both FREE.

For Spotify you need to have premium subscription

andrewgrumpmeister to pa248
25 Feb 16 #41
Not a speaker. l connects to a speaker. I have mine connected to my Hi-Fi. So I have far superior sound to a "speaker" I will get another one and connect it to an old powered speaker in the kitchen. I will then have multi room. Its not Bluetooth. So you play your music from your phone, but once it connects it hands it off. So now you can use your phone without getting notifications through your chosen speaker. Make a phone call, get texts, play games.
splender to pa248
25 Feb 16 #318
It makes speakers connected to your wifi using speaker cables or if you have powered speakers (amp inside speaker) effectively wireless. Another way of think of this thing, is it allows your smartphone/tablet, without phono (RCA) cables, becomes an audio input source to your hi fi amp, as for a tuner, record player, casette deck, CD player etc.. Another way to think of it is, it adds wifi to an amp with no wifi capability but all music passes through this CCA.
For advanced hi-fi users, they may have a DAC connected to an amp, then this CCA can enable DAC to get its digital input wirelessly.

don't know if you've had a reply to this yet mate.
I've got a chromecast audio. Bought it on launch as a pre-cursor to perhaps shelling out on a Sonos.
Not bought the Sonos yet as this is a decent bit of kit to breathe new life into an existing hi-fi set up. I've got it currently plugged into a 2.1 speaker set with 3.5mm input. The audio output is only as good as the speakers it's plugged into.

It does have optical out, as well as 3.5mm and the red/white cable. You just need the right leads (3.5mm included in pack though, as well as usb/charger adaptor).

I use Deezer on it, and it's brilliant. Can also use Google Play (no need for subscription - you can upload up to 50,000 of your own songs to your account). Also various other online streams (podcasts, pandora, spotify, etc). I'm firmly in the "android-sphere" just now, so don't know how it works with Apple music.

The only real gripe I had with it was that it reset overnight to maximum volume so if you weren't careful putting music on you rocked your house. That bug has since been fixed with a firmware upgrade though.

Seeing as you've got decent existing kit, I'd say buying this for £15 is a decent cheap investment. I've got both this and the normal TV Chromecast and I rarely use the latter but always use the audio one. For a house party at New Year I just had Deezer running on a cheap tablet and that was the "juke box" for the night.

Doesnt work with AirPlay and Apple Music. But will work with Chromecast App and third party apps like Squeezebox. Hoping a hack turns up for Airplay (audio) as then thats my system 100% sorted for £15/zone plus the Amp

Anyone found a good way to turn the Amp on/off? Currently have a squeezebox setup with single multiroom Amp for the 4 zones. As you can imagine the Amp can be power hungry. So I use WoL to wake the Squeezebox server and that in turn is connected to an EoN USB controlled plug which switches the Amp on. The server is set to auto sleep after 5 mins of inactivity, which then turns the Amp off. For now I'll leave the server in place purely to control the Amp, but would be great to find a better solution so I can retask the server. Also I'm going to switch the big multiroom Amp for small discrete T-Amps when I find a decent deal, so again would be great to trigger them via the Chromecast they are connected to.
johnthehuman
25 Feb 16 3 #83
one thing worth mentioning about Google Play Music, you don't actually need to 'upload' everything you own either, it does a quick scrobble, and you are given access to anything you put in the folder, which is already on their servers.

It only does actual file uploading if it's not present already, or if your copy is of a better quality than theirs.

David23
25 Feb 16 #87
Thanks, ordered.

But I have a few questions hopefully someone technically minded can answer.

I only want to cast my locally stored phone music, I don't want to use any cloud stuff. If you use the cast icon in many music apps does it send the LOCAL music via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi? My aim is to get better sound quality then you average Bluetooth receiver dongle on eBay.

My current Andriod phone is lower than 4.4.2 (yes I know that's old) so it does not have the inbuilt 'cast audio' feature in settings. Will I still be able to cast phone audio using the independent Chromecast app? Unfortunately Poweramp still doesn't have a cast button!!

Not my first question on whether is sends from the phone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, all Bluetooth codecs frankly suck in audio quality, even APTX. If this sends it over Bluetooth it's rather useless for local music.

Does that local cast app still allow you to use your own audio app while casting?

I actually won a Sonos in a competition last year but was frustrated that there were things I could not play - in particular I could not play music from iPlayer (live stuff is OK, but you can't play non-live stuff). The Sonos itself sounds great, but that's no good if I can't listen to the music I want to.
So I gave the Sonos to my woman & bought a £17 amp from Amazon and a set of £20 bookshelf speakers from Richer Sounds. Together with this £15 Chromecast audio, I have a similar setup to the Sonos for a fraction of the price. Oh, and the speakers are stereo (unlike the mono Sonos).
And if I wanted a higher quality setup, I could always replace the cheap speakers with some Diamonds and it would still be a ton cheaper than a Sonos.
Thanks for the deal. Heated.

https://support.google.com/chromecast/answer/3046409?hl=en-GB

See no mention of it having bluetooth. So I think thats pretty conclusive

My understanding is, where the service supports casting, the audio/video stream is sent directly to the chromecast. Spotify for example supports this.

Where it doesnt, i.e. the media is local to the device, the chromecast App streams directly to the chromecast over wifi.

The issue is with services like AirPlay/Apple Music which don't support casting or streaming directly to chromecast. So check any service/app you use either allows you to use the chromecast App on the device, can stream directly to chromecast or best of all supports chromecast and can cast directly (for cloud based services).

It doesn't send it over Bluetooth. It uses WiFi and sends the audio uncompressed.

"For Chromecast Audio (or Chromecast), there is no compression in transmitting. Audio quality is only limited by the music source and the quality of your speaker. The 802.11ac WiFi connection is far more than sufficient for lossless audios.

If you use analog output in Chromecast Audio, the DAC (Digital-to-analog converter) in Chromecast Audio is also a decent one, although not a high-end one.

So, if you compare Chromecast Audio vs Bluetooth, Chromecast Audio is a definitely a winner in audio quality."

Thanks for the reply, I thought it might be one of those devices which has Bluetooth but doesn't tell you specifically! (lots of chips just throw it in these days). So if it is Wi-Fi my next awkward local music question is...

Is it sending the analogue output over Wi-Fi or actually the digital file? It's not clear if it's taking the audio that's coming from the phones heaphone jack already decoded by the phones DAC.

Yes but that article did not expressly state whether they were talking about cloud or local music, if it's cloud music then it's obviously digital.

There is NO Bluetooth chip in the CCA.

My understanding for local music is the audio stream is sent directly to the Chromecast via WiFi, i.e. no decoding happens on the source. Simply output high bitrate or FLAC files to something like BubbleUPNP which then routes it to the Chromecast. The CCA has a decent DAC but the optical out allows you to output directly to a DAC of your choice. I've seen nothing to suggest local encoding needs to take place before reaching the CCA.

This video shows how this process works with FLAC streams via Tidal and BubbleUPNP - not local files, but the process is similar. The FLAC stream is being processed by the CCA, not the "Local Rederer" in the software:

https://youtu.be/UfygXym0Ypw

(Note also the "High Dynamic Range" setting in the Chromecast app. This is specifically for connecting to decent HiFi setups.)
Mentos
25 Feb 16 1 #124
The supported audio codecs are listed here:

https://developers.google.com/cast/docs/media

Audio codecs

HE-AAC
LC-AAC
MP3
Vorbis
WAV (LPCM)
FLAC

Doesn't mention encapsulated analogue audio over wifi and to be honest would be very surprising if they did use such a method given the specs of the chromecast. That's usually used where the receiver is very light weight and has minimal power/codec support.

If its pulling from a Dumb NAS its obviously just pulling the file. If its being fed by an App (like the chromecast iOS App) it would send the encoded audio, no reason for it to decode when the chromecast can do that anyway. The only question would be what happens when the file is encoded in a format not compatible. The source App either needs to transcode or it just won't work. From the list looks like WAV (LPCM) would be the cheapest (in terms of encoding cost) format for the source App to transcode to.

Although Squeezebox was quite a bit cheaper then Sonos and that died a death. Halloway to ratsdomino
25 Feb 16 #136
You almost certainly would NOT get a very good sound from that. Guitar amps are designed to make guitars sound good, not general music and audio and as such, are not hi-fi devices. You would be better looking for a cheapish powered speaker(s) or boombox/radio/CD player with aux in

I linked mine to a cheap powered set of PC speakers (2.1 - two little speakers and the amp/subwoofer that hides away) that I paid about fifteen quid for at least ten years ago, so I've got a "sonos type" set up for the grand total of thirty quid.

I would imagine that, with most things, the better (and more expensive) the hardware the better the sound.

I've been wondering how I could link this into my existing Sonos network. I have one decent hifi in my house, a playbar, and two standalone Sonos speakers where a normal hifi would be overkill.,

The playbar can take sounds from the TV and stream to all the other Sonos devices.

Am I right in thinking I could play one chromecast into my hifi, and one into my TV, and from the TV into the playbar and the rest of the sonos network? Has anyone tried this, and what kind of audio delay might you get between the chromecast and the sonos network?

25 Feb 16 1 #143
It slightly makes me regret dropping the money I have on Sonos, but the thing Sonos does better than Chromecast by far is the integration with the TV. I can cast the TV audio around the house which is great for when there's football on etc, and there really is zero delay. I've played around with CCA and have just ordered another 2 for my work where we have decent existing speakers, but at home it just wasn't quite good enough.

To give some plus points to Sonos - the playbar is by far the best sounding soundbar I have ever heard irrespective of price (although NAIM have one that looks better and sounds just as good), but more than that, the play:1 is the best small speaker I've heard too. Whilst CCA is clearly a fantastic bit of kit, £130 for a play:1 is justifiable when you have to add on the speakers also. The ease of use with Sonos is fantastic too - we have it set up so one click of any speaker (when not already in use, obvs) starts playing our Deezer flow, so it's pretty good for that.

Still the best way mate. When I bought my current house it required a complete refurb. Laid speaker cabling to every room for ceiling speakers and HDMI/multiple Cat6 as well for Video. Everything co-located in comms cupboard.

I don't use CCA in my own home - I tried it out and really wanted to like it as I would've just turned the kit I had at the time into the home theatre (Playbar and 2 Play:1s) - so wanted to experiment. I returned the CCA's I had as I realised that because of how easy it was to adopt speakers into the sonos system I was better to just buy 2 extra power cables and another Play:1 so that the bedroom, office and kitchen could all have their own speakers, with 2 power cables permanently in the lounge to allow for quick and easy 5.1. I did however like CCA enough to remember it, and now it's basically buy one get one free, I was happy to grab 2 for the church I work at. This means that the main church and the office can both have "Smart Audio" in their existing systems. I'll try one out at home first though if you want and can report back. I have enough other speakers lying around to test the audio out, although my PC speakers are USB audio so I can't test it with amazing speakers.

I see you've edited your comment - yes there's a delay option, but the Sonos kit is seamless at doing that. I'm sure CCA will catch up, but at the moment, if you have more than one "zone" I think Sonos is still king. That was what swung me - the fact that there was a noticeable lag even when CCA thought it was synced (due to the speakers presumably having different processing along with wifi related delay) - which in a small property like ours is not pleasant to listen to.
Mentos
25 Feb 16 #155
Thanks, I had considered that although I have a couple of issues :/

- I need multiroom sync, which I don't think it does?
- I need analogue out for the Amp (although on the Chromecast side I'd need ethernet adapter).
- We currently use Spotify which we get free from Vodafone with our mobile accounts. With Chromecast that supports casting. With Airplay I guess Id need to install the App? And then switch accounts (we each have our own account) or Airplay from our phones directly?

Advantage would be we're predominantly Apple household these days, so should be seamless with our devices (although locks us down further to Apple). Don't really need the video capability, everything is co-located and video is distributed via a HDMI matrix anyway.

Thanks Tom. Sonos will be my main network "master" and covers most of the house - we just had a very occasional need for wanting to hook up another couple of speakers, say if we're having a party or entertaining outside. But you could have one CCA playing internet radio, another streaming from spotify, etc
Mentos
25 Feb 16 #172
A bit of loss is better then choppy audio :/

I guess the best solution would be wired CCA (or equivalent) co-located with each set of speakers. But thats a bit difficult when the speakers are in the ceiling or buried in a wall :/ Hence for convenience of maintenance etc co-located in a cupboard seemed best.

The playbar can send sound from the TV to other sonos speakers around the house - either in surround mode, or in "copy" mode. I've definitely had TV all around the house before now.

I don't think Google cares much about out-of-the-box multiroom functionality. All they want is your data on their servers. They have made multiroom possible. It's a sort of enabling device. But you have to be prepared to do the minimal tinkering ie follow a youtube video guide to set it all up.

No, in the chromecast app you setup groups (named whatever you want) then you add speakers to that and cast to the group. You can have as many groups as you wish and speakers in multiple groups. And you can control volume of each one in a group separately if needed (or all together as master volume as well). If you have more than 2 and want, say, to have option of A+B or A+C or B+C rather than A+B+ C then you will need to set more than one group but that's easily done. I did have multi room using AirPlay devices but either had to use the PC (with Airfoil) if wanted to use Spotify as iPad or could use Whaale app on iPad but only with Deezer as no Spotify support. These are much easier, have access to many more providers and local music through Google Play Music and multi room can be controlled from iPad, Android phone, tablet so no need for PC to be on (plus much easier for non-techy (eg my wife) to utilise multi room). Highly recommended especially at this price.

FYI this works with squeezebox which is what we use it with, just set ours up. Squeezebox internet radio is higher quality than TuneIn etc. So we have Squeezebox Duet in one room and CCA's in the others, controllable with the squeezebox remote/apps.

Does your phone have a Screen Cast function built in? i.e. running Android Lollipop onwards? If so, you can watch a Youtube video on your phone and Cast Screen to the CCA.
It definitely works, last night my son and I were watching various YouTube videos on my Sony Z3 - with the sound coming out of my Hifi Speakers (to which the CCA is connected).

For those with Squeezebox server / player setups, there is a plugin available for the Squeezbox server which allows a Chromecast Audio to be used as a squeezebox player.
The plugin is 'Castbridge' and for more details see http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?104614-Announce-CastBridge-integrate-Chromecast-players-with-LMS-(squeeze2cast)

How do I set it up? We've got a proper physical squeezebox remote and we use squeezer, I've never tried synced playback before though, it will work to multiple chromecasts as it can cast squeezebox to the group, if you let me know how I do it to multiple squeezebox players I'll give it a go, we use a RPi2 as well with max2play, the CCA is much more user friendly though.

From reading the Castbridge thread on the slimdevices forum, it seems syncing a CCA with a native Squeezebox does not work too well. With regard to controllers, I believe any control app will work as the CCA is just seen as a squeezebox player by the squeezebox server software. I have used iPeng, which is a popular control app (and player) for iphones, ipod touches and ipads). On android I have used Squeezer and the Orange squeeze app.

David23 to duckative

Yes, it makes old audio equipment 'smart' so cloud music and wireless local music. As for your soundbar by plugging this into it you would in theory get a better quality of audio as the music is going over Wi-Fi not Bluetooth.

Much better quality audio. You can carry on using your phone without having notifications come through the speakers. listen to your music while playing a game on your phone. If you are streaming non locally stored music you can even turn your phone off. So as it hands all the hard work from your phone to the CCA it is better on your battery.

Just picked one up.

Been a bit of a nightmare to set up. I already have a 2nd Gen normal Chromecast in the same room, connected at 5ghz and this one won't also connect to my router at 5ghz. I have to set it to 2.4ghz. However, once I do that, no other devices in the house can connect at 2.4 - it's as if the Chromecast Audio is killing/saturating the band it's connected to. (the same happens in reverse, ie I set the Chromecast Audio to 5ghz and have to set the normal Chromecast to 2.4, and then no other devices can connect at 5ghz, eg my mobile).

Probably down to my router (Western Digital N750) as it's now discontinued and was cheap. I'll have to do some more googling as there must be a fix/workaround!

(edit - sorted it myself. I had to unplug my normal Chromecast, then do a factory reset and reinstall. Now they're both running at 5ghz)

Great price though, and I'll keep it regardless...

I have bought both the TV chromecast & the Audio chromecast. I regularly use the TV chromecast, excellent for all4 app (Walter Presents) & BBC & other visuals. BUT the Audio remains hardly used due to volume issues. This is well known and has been posted on Chromecast forums. I have commented several times as have other people. Basically all volumes are basically nearly off & audio is BOOMING out - renders it useless. https://productforums.google.com/forum/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=footer#!msg/chromecast/JC4CQkmYlhk/KQEEDbH7AQAJ You may use something that is not a problem, but for now I cast radio to my TV & have full control!

Bluetooth you tie up the devices audio and you are restricted to range, if you have a microwave you may also experience bad disruption when it is on and you can't multiroom.

These devices, you can link them together and they have a very tidy solution for this. Once started you don't actually need to be in the vicinity - you can leave your house. The quality should be better and they are uneffected by external devices. Bought 3 of them on the back of the op and they are worth the money - great device

Over on /r/chromecast, someone reported that drop-offs can be caused by DHCP lease issues. Setting up a DHCP reservation on the router DHCP settings solved the issue.

Something I've not seen mentioned yet, but the CCA also supports the Chromecast Ethernet adapter. It's a replacement power supply with a built-in Ethernet socket. If your wifi is rubbish but you have Ethernet around, it's an option. You can build your own DIY adapter, or you can buy them for £15 on the Google Play store.

Yeah, multi-room audio is something that is primarily targeted at, and certainly portrayed in adverts as, a house party age group type thing when you want to create a mini club with 'rooms'. The reality for the rest of us who don't host wild parties is to use it to play songs in one room... the room we are currently in!

so its like a Bluetooth bassicly, I know it's trough Wi-Fi . So what does this do that I cannot do on a cheap Bluetooth?
Ergates to grovero
26 Feb 16 #351
Not sure what you mean by a cheap Bluetooth. Do you mean a Bluetooth speaker? This isn't a speaker. It connects to your amp or powered speakers and receives an audio stream over wifi (or ethernet, with the adapter). You control it from your phone but the Chromecast does all the work. Bluetooth will use your phone's battery but with Chromecast, your phone does minimal work.
tals to grovero
26 Feb 16 2 #352
Bluetooth connects you devices audio to the speaker. It has a limited range, can only have one connection and is effected by other devices such as microwaves.

With these you tell the chromecast what you would like to listen to and then it plays the audio, it has no need to then remain connected to your device. So for instance if you were listening to music and then watched a video on your phone the video audio would still come out of the phone. you can leave the vicinity and the chromecast will continue streaming. Even better you can connect the chromecasts up so they all play the same audio so the comparison is better said that it's like a cheap sonos  in addition to the chromecast you need a speaker with a 3 1/2' jack or a cable to convert between them.
M_z to grovero
26 Feb 16 1 #358
The main thing for me is the optical output into my separate DAC, it is CD quality. I previously had a decent Sony aptx bluetooth device, if you hear them side, the sound quality is horrible next to the Chromecast played through the same amp and speakers. There are other advantages to wifi - none of which make much difference to me, the sound quality is the overwhelming benefit. For £15, I doubt you could buy a bluetooth device with aptx, so it would sound really awful - for £15 its a complete no-brainer.

To Multiroom, you just go into the chromecast app and select device (right hand corner) and create a group of devices. Then any app that has the ability to chromecast will show the group - selecting that multirooms, selecting a device just plays on the device. It is a very tidy solution.

Google Play is one of the only apps (or is it the only app) which Sonos permits to control their speakers and "cast" to them. Detail is at

https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/6000306?hl=en-GB

" On your Android device
Use the Google Play Music app

Make sure your device and Sonos system are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
Open the Google Play Music app Google Play Music Icon.
Touch the cast icon Cast.
Select your Sonos speaker or group of speakers from your device list.
Select music to play.
To stop playing music on your Sonos speakers, touch the cast icon again and select Disconnect.

Use the Sonos Controller app

Open the Sonos Controller app.
Near the top right of your "Now Playing" screen, touch Music.
Select Google Play Music and choose what you want to play.
Note: Make sure you have downloaded the Sonos Controller app and are using an updated version of the Google Play Music app. "

When using Spotify and various other apps, you cannot cast to Sonos speakers, HOWEVER you can access Spotify Premium from the Sonos app. Many regard the Sonos app as less user friendly than the Spotify app.

I'm interested in how Sony have got high rest audio quality out of Bluetooth using their new proprietary LDAC format. I wonder how it compares to CCA's Wi-Fi route.

26 Feb 16 #368
You shouldn't need to play 2 songs simultaneously on one device, just play one song, then disconnect from that CCA. Your phone is no longer involved. Then connect to a second and play a song. If google isn't restricting the account across devices it shouldn't restrict the same device.

The amp was a LEPY 2024A Plus Amplifier from Amazon (£17.99) and the speakers were Tibo Edge Mini from Richer Sounds (£19.95). Both are great but, if you wanted to achieve the highest quality, you could get some Wharfdale Diamond 9 (or something similar for around £60).
I run the Tibos with the front covers off as they look nicer that way:

Assuming your speakers have an Aux in. Better sound (if the speakers are capable), being able to use your phone without notifications coming through the speakers, better battery on your phone/tablet, different sources in different rooms at the same time from the one device. But apart from that, don't buy, no point.

OK, having a play. I get music going in the kitchen. I close Google Play Music. Music still going on in the kitchen. Reopen Google Play Music. Go to cast and it will play the new track in the kitchen or give me the option to stop casting in the kitchen. It won't let me play a different track while it is castng the other. However. If I get it going in the kitchen. Turn my phone off and on again, I still have my music going in the kitchen, but can then open Google Play Music and cast a new song to the lounge. So I now have two different songs going in the two rooms from one device on one Google Play Music account. Bit of a faf, but possible, oh, and I can't control the kitchen as I have handed it off from my phone. As the only time I am likely to play different tracks at the same time is when two people want to do their own thing. It would just be easier to use a second device on the same account. But technically, yes, it can be done.

You either leave it powered on all the time connected to wifi, or you turn it on when you want to use it and it will connect to wifi on its own and appear as a device you can cast to. Supposed to be cd quality over wifi. I like to turn everthing off when not in use.

Anyone using one of these with Linux? I was wondering if it was possible to cast local content on a Linux laptop (Mint 17.2). I guess that casting a Chrome tab would allow one track at a time to be played, but was wondering if something more sophisticated was possible for content stored on the laptop (e.g. album playback, playlists, etc)???

Yeah, although I've not tried it: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2205898

harry66 to forcedv
26 Feb 16 2 #406
If you have Android 5 Lollipop and above phone then you can cast the audio from YouTube app to ChromeCast Audio.
Just use the phone's built in Screen Cast function and then play the video on the YouTube app - the sound will come out of your CCA attached hifi/speakers etc. and you can watch the video on the phone.

I've got some chargable speakers spare. So charge the speakers, then attach the CC to the speakers and the CC I'd attached to a mobile battery pack.
4242bruce
26 Feb 16 #412
So you would be happy with a cable from the power block in to the CCA and then a cable from the CCA to the speakers. I make that two cables. But not happy with a cable from the wall to the CCA and from the CCA to the speakers. I make that two cables. But without having to get a third cable to charge the power pack. I guess I am over thinking this. But I see it as a hard wired wireless system. Forget portability. That is not what it was designed for.
EN1GMA
26 Feb 16 #415
erm no, the battery pack would be fully charged and then connected up to the CC,which would be connected to the speakers. if the CC sucks the power when switched on only then the pack would have sufficient battery for quite a few days of play back. and if it consumes less power then probably more than a few days worth.

i think you've over thunk it..

It's free to set up a Gmail account. This then get you access the suite of Google apps. And you can then cast stuff to CC and CCA. You can download 50'000 tracks to Google Music for free, and unlimited tracks you buy from them. If all your music is on iTunes you can link it to your Gmail and it's just there for you to cast/play. 26 Feb 16 2 #433
It'll go on the tags/metadata and some fingerprinting. It's quite clever - if the uploader finds that the track is already somewhere in Google Play's library - it won't even bother uploading it, just (in effect) drop a copy from Play into your library - so uploading a lot of music is very fast... Once online Play can offer suggestions to badly tagged files to correct the tags and drop on artwork etc.

Uploads can be done via Chrome, or a standalone program (Music Manager) https://play.google.com/music/listen#/manager Both options can be set to monitor a folder or set of folders and upload anything new found.
vidl
26 Feb 16 #434
When you rip the data has to go somewhere, so, yes, rip to your PC, then - if you're clever - you set Google's Music Manager software to monitor the folder that you rip into and have it automatically upload anything new it finds. Very simple easy process. Note that the file won't actually be uploaded if Google already has it - a copy of what Google already has (normally at 320kbps) gets dropped into your personal library - means it's very fast and saves on uploading bandwidth.

4242bruce to derekben1
27 Feb 16 #450
You will have to get a 3.5 mini jack to 2 RCA phono lead to go from the CCA to your amp.
As the amp has an optical output, not input, you can not connect optically.
4242bruce to derekben1
27 Feb 16 #457
Just a thought. Do you know if the input is named? Does it say Aux, Tape or Phono? This matters as if it is a turntable input you will need to know if it is at line level. I will try to explain. If you plug a turntable in to an input named CD the volume coming out will be as loud as an ant tap dancing on a sponge. Unless the the turntable has its own amp inbuilt to boost the signal to line level before it gets to the amp. This is called a Phono stage. If the input on the amp is for a turntable, it will most likely have the Phono stage built in. This means that if you plug something that is already at line level in to it, the signal will be getting a double boost. This could cause problems.

If this is gobbledygook let me know the make and model of the amp, and I will see what I can find out.

£14 delivered is unbelievable deal.
If you upload your music to google play as above posts, this will open up old hifi's to internet music and radio via tunein. google play has its own "radio stations", which are basically playlists created of similar artists, so this is great to introduce new music to your tastes.
Obviously google wants you to sign up to monthly payments, so they could even give these away free!! to get you on the hook.
But this won't cost you any more than £14 to work, and play your ripped music or mp3 files.

How does CCA purchase get you free music play?
Have you got a link?
cicobuff to paulw123
27 Feb 16 #462
For premium account of Google Play Music it is £9.99 each month, but you get the first 3 months free = £29.97. CCA purchase has no effect on this, just useful for streaming any songs in the premium version of Google Play Music to devices that are not network capable.
4242bruce
27 Feb 16 1 #463
You plug the CCA in. Download the CC app and open it. Tap the 3 lines in the top left corner. Click offers. Currently the 90 offer is there. This won't work if you have subscribed to play music or had a free offer before. If that is the case. Get a new Gmail account. Link the CCA to that account. This is what I have just done. You do need to put payment details in. Just set yourself a reminder to cancel the payment for when the 90 days is up. In fact, I think you can get the offer and then cancel the subscription straight away.

Get yourself the Google rewards app, save the money, spend it on another month. If you have several devices kicking about. Load Google rewards on them with different Gmail accounts. Save the money. Then you can send the gift of a month to you CCA account. Keep an eye on the offers to boost your spend. I realise the Google rewards is the long game. But if you are prepared to play it.
4242bruce
27 Feb 16 #464
I didn't realise that. So I could just open a new account every 90 days and never pay again?
K777
27 Feb 16 #465
trying to justify buying it but not sure if its worth it for me. I only have some Hifi speakers, would obviously need to buy an amp (or active speakers). I do however use a Raspberry Pi.
A better solution would be HiFiBerry Amp, which plugs directly into the Pi and speakers plug into that. Very neat solution, size of a deck of cards. Pi runs as a music server, with controls/client on smartphone.

Chromecast Audio would be great for other rooms (kitchen etc). Anyone know of cheap (half decent) active speakers to pair with ?
cicobuff
27 Feb 16 #466
I guess if you use differing emails...would not be convenient for the cloud storage although I am sure you could use one as your 'main account' as you can still get 50,000 songs stored in the cloud without premium, then keep changing emails for free 3 month trials of Google Play Music.

Not tried it personally, but in theory (and I am sure someone sooner or later in here will pipe up whether it works) it should.

Remember that the Chromecast audio setup I describe allows you to control the system from your phone.
The quality of the Lepy LP-2024A+ amp I used is - according to the reviews I have read online - very high. And you can choose your own speakers at a variety of price points.
Ah, decisions, decisions!

I'd love some help here guys. What I want is to hook the CCA up to my stereo amp and be able to cast local MP3's from my PC? I have used the CC video with my android phone (before I blasted it into a million pieces) and local cast worked via my NAS drive great. I presume the CCA will be exactly the same but I cannot for the life of me figure out a way to easily cast MP3s from a non android device? I have tried to use the chrome browser and another extension called videostream and they work but only allow you to play one track? I'd prefer to not upload my tunes to Microsoft Groove or Google Play as I really need to sit down and then them organised first. Any help would be great. Cheers.

This is the best I have found, it will cast your pc sound to the chromecast audio - great until you get an notification sound!
