I have this and the black and decker mouse and believe this one is definitely better. Grips the sanding sheets much better than the b&d as well as less vibration to your hands.

Anyone know how/if this would cope with shifting gloss paint off a bannister?
The heatgun & scrape method is taking me ages and Nitromors is not an option...

It should do the job except for the fiddly little bits (internal corners, etc.) but if it's an intricate bannister and/or has round profiles you risk changing their shape. Probably not the best on anything but those very simple 1970s bannisters with all flat sections. There will still be little bits that only paint stripper will reach. Not an easy job if you don't plan to repaint.

I've had a few Challenge Xtreme items from Argos via deals on here. I'm no tool snob - I'm always grateful for cheap and spare tools, but this brand has been a real letdown.
Sure, you don't expect them to compare to DeWalt, Ryobi or Bosch, but the last Challenge tool I had fell to bits within a few uses.

Say I bought a big bit of tree section to make a table. This is what you'd use to smooth it down?
Total DIY noob, but have a project on at the moment..

If it's a big bit of wood, a belt sander to start with, and then move down to this for the finer sanding, or pref a random orbit sander so you don't get swirl marks.
